Abstract
Herein, we report an unprecedented dual photoexcited palladium and photoredox-catalyzed remote C(sp3)-H acylation of amides free of external acylating reagents through sequential N-O/C-H/C-O bond cleavage and chemoselective C-C bond formation. This dual catalytic system shows high efficiency, good atom economy by deletion of oxygen, and diverse functional group tolerance. Experimental investigation of the reaction mechanism revealed that O-acyl hydroxamides enabled by photoexcited palladium generated the alkyl radicals via a 1,5-HAT process mediated by amidyl radicals and a palladium carboxylate complex, which, undergoing photoredox-catalyzed phosphoranyl radical-mediated C-O bond cleavage, leads to coupling with alkyl radicals to deliver the final products.

Abstract
A general and efficient method for the direct alkynylation and oxidation of remote C(sp3)-H bonds under photoirradiation is described. In this reaction, the Pd catalyst acts as both a photocatalyst to generate the nitrogen radical and a cross-coupling catalyst with a terminal alkyne. Attractive features of this system include good functional group tolerance, scalability, convenient reagents, and an operating system. The utility of this protocol is highlighted by its application for derivatization of several valuable aza-heterocycles such as caspase-3 inhibitor and azepinone derivatives.

Abstract
Photoredox-catalyzed 1,5-hydrogen atom transfer has rapidly developed, which has made remarkable achievements in the activation of remote C(sp3)-H bonds and successfully addressed the selectivity issues faced by transition metal catalysis. In recent years, the discovery of hybrid Pd radical intermediates and their application in photoredox-catalyzed 1,5-hydrogen atom transfer has gained considerable importance, which obviated the necessity of an additional photosensitizer. In light of the significant role of alkenes in organic synthesis and hybrid Pd radical intermediates, this review aims to summarize efforts on photoinduced Pd-catalyzed radical relay Heck and desaturation reactions via 1,5-hydrogen atom transfer, briefly discussing the design, selectivity, reaction mechanisms and future research prospects.

Abstract
ConspectusThe past decade has witnessed significant advancements of visible-light-induced photocatalysis, establishing it as a powerful and versatile tool in organic synthesis. The major focus of this field has centered on the development of methodologies that either rely solely on photocatalysts or combine photocatalysis with other catalytic methods, such as transition metal catalysis, to address a broader and more diverse array of transformations. Within this rapidly evolving area, a subfield that we refer to as transition metal photocatalysis has garnered significant attention due to its growing impact and mechanistic uniqueness. A distinguishing feature of this subfield is the dual functionality of a single transition metal complex, which not only acts as a photocatalyst to initiate photochemical processes but also functions as a traditional catalyst, facilitating key bond-breaking and bond-forming events. As such, an exogenous photocatalyst is not required in transition metal photocatalysis. However, the implications of harnessing both the excited- and ground-state reactivities of the transition metal complex can extend beyond this simplification. One of the most compelling aspects of this area is that photoexcited transition metal complexes can exhibit unique reactivities inaccessible through conventional thermal or dual photocatalytic approaches. These distinct reactivities can be leveraged to accomplish novel transformations either by engaging an entirely different substrate pool or by unlocking new reactivities of known substrates. In 2016, our group pioneered the use of phosphine-ligated palladium catalysts that can be photoexcited upon visible-light irradiation to engage diverse substrates in radical reactions. In our initial discovery, we showed that photoexcitation can redirect the well-established oxidative addition of a Pd(0) complex into aryl iodides toward an unprecedented radical process, generating hybrid aryl Pd(I) radical species. We subsequently extended this novel strategy to the formation of alkyl radicals from alkyl halides. These reactive radical intermediates have been harnessed in a wide variety of transformations, including desaturation, alkyl Heck reactions, and alkene difunctionalization cascades, among others.Seeking to further expand this new avenue, we achieved the first example of asymmetric palladium photocatalysis in the context of allylic C-H amination, where the palladium catalyst now plays triple duty by additionally controlling the stereochemical outcome of the reaction. In parallel to reaction discovery, we have also established that diazo compounds, strained molecules, and electron-deficient alkenes can serve as alkyl radical precursors beyond organic halides and redox-active esters. Notably, the engagement of electron-deficient alkenes has been made possible by the photoinduced hydricity enhancement of Pd-H species, representing a new mode of photoexcited reactivity. This Account presents our discovery and development of visible-light-induced palladium catalysis, organized by the type of transformations explored. Given the rapid progress in the field, we anticipate that this Account will provide readers with guiding principles and inspiration for designing and developing more efficient and novel transformations.

Abstract
Cytochrome P450 enzymes are known to catalyse bimodal oxidation of aliphatic acids via radical intermediates, which partition between pathways of hydroxylation and desaturation1,2. Developing analogous catalytic systems for remote C-H functionalization remains a significant challenge3-5. Here, we report the development of Cu(I)-catalysed bimodal dehydrogenation/lactonization reactions of synthetically common N-methoxyamides through radical abstractions of the γ-aliphatic C-H bonds. The feasibility of switching from dehydrogenation to lactonization is also demonstrated by altering reaction conditions. The use of a readily available amide as both radical precursor and internal oxidant allows for the development of redox-neutral C-H functionalization reactions with methanol as the sole side product. These C-H functionalization reactions using a Cu(I) catalyst with loading as low as 0.5 mol.% is applied to the diversification of a wide range of aliphatic acids including drug molecules and natural products. The exceptional compatibility of this catalytic system with a wide range of oxidatively sensitive functionality demonstrates the unique advantage of using a simple amide substrate as a mild internal oxidant.

Abstract
Three-component diene carboaminations offer a potent means to access synthetically valuable allylic amines with rapid molecular complexity escalation. The existing literature primarily discloses racemic examples, necessitating the use of halides/pseudohalides as substrates. This paper introduces a photoinduced Pd-catalyzed enantioselective three-component carboamination of aryl-substituted 1,3-dienes, leveraging aliphatic C-H bonds for rapid synthesis. The reaction employs 10 mol % of chiral palladium catalyst and an excess aryl bromide as the HAT reagent. This approach yields diverse chiral allylamines with moderate to excellent enantioselectivities. Notably, it stands as the first instance of an asymmetric three-component diene carboamination reaction, directly utilizing abundant C(sp3)-H bearing partners, such as toluene-type substrates, ethers, amines, esters, and ketones. The protocol exhibits versatility across amines, encompassing aliphatic, aromatic, primary, and secondary derivatives. This method could serve as a versatile platform for stereoselective incorporation of various nucleophiles, dienes, and C(sp3)-H bearing partners.

Abstract
Unsaturated amides represent common functional groups found in natural products and bioactive molecules and serve as versatile synthetic building blocks. Here, we report an iron(II)/cobalt(II) dual catalytic system for the syntheses of distally unsaturated amide derivatives. The transformation proceeds through an iron nitrenoid-mediated 1,5-hydrogen atom transfer (1,5-HAT) mechanism. Subsequently, the radical intermediate undergoes hydrogen atom abstraction from vicinal methylene by a cobaloxime catalyst, efficiently yielding β,γ- or γ,δ-unsaturated amide derivatives under mild conditions. The efficiency of Co-mediated HAT can be tuned by varying different auxiliaries, highlighting the generality of this protocol. Remarkably, this desaturation protocol is also amenable to practical scalability, enabling the synthesis of unsaturated carbamates and ureas, which can be readily converted into various valuable molecules.

Abstract
Harnessing the key intermediates in metal-catalyzed reactions is one of the most essential strategies in the development of selective organic transformations. The nitrogen group transfer reactivity of metal-nitrenoids to ubiquitous C-H bonds allows for diverse C-N bond formation to furnish synthetically valuable aminated products. In this study, we present an unprecedented reactivity of iridium and ruthenium nitrenoids to generate remote carbocation intermediates, which subsequently undergo nucleophile incorporation, thus developing a formal γ-C-H functionalization of carboxylic acids. Mechanistic investigations elucidated a unique singlet metal-nitrenoid reactivity to initiate an abstraction of γ-hydride to form the carbocation intermediate that eventually reacts with a broad range of carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen nucleophiles, as well as biorelevant molecules. Alternatively, the same intermediate can lead to deprotonation to afford β,γ-unsaturated amides in a less nucleophilic solvent.

Abstract
Here, we describe a protocol for the metal-free, photo-induced borylation of unactivated C(sp3)-H bonds distal to an O-oxalate hydroxamic ester functionality. The methodology requires only substrate and bis(catecholato)diboron under light irradiation to effect the desired transformation. A range of linear and cyclic tertiary and secondary borylation products are obtained in good yields and high site-selectivity enabling the late-stage C(sp3)-H borylation of natural product derivatives and drug-like compounds.

Abstract
The borylation of unreactive carbon-hydrogen bonds is a valuable method for transforming feedstock chemicals into versatile building blocks. Here, we describe a transition metal-free method for the photoredox-catalyzed borylation of unactivated C(sp3)-H bond, initiated by 1,5-hydrogen atom transfer (HAT). The remote borylation was directed by 1,5-HAT of the amidyl radical, which was generated by photocatalytic reduction of hydroxamic acid derivatives. The method accommodates substrates with primary, secondary and tertiary C(sp3)-H bonds, yielding moderate to good product yields (up to 92%) with tolerance for various functional groups. Mechanistic studies, including radical clock experiments and DFT calculations, provided detailed insight into the 1,5-HAT borylation process.

Abstract
Here, a palladium-catalyzed photoinduced N-to-alkyl radical relay Heck reaction of o-alkylbenzamides at benzylic sites with vinyl arenes is described. The reaction employs neither exogeneous photosensitizers nor external oxidants. It is proposed to proceed via a N-to-alkyl hybrid palladium-radical mechanism which occurs under mild conditions that are compatible with a wide range of functional groups. The products are easily transformed to azepinone derivatives, which are prevalent in pharmaceuticals and natural products.

Abstract
1,5-Hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) is an effective strategy to achieve remote desaturation of nonfunctionalized alkanes. Herein, we report a photoinduced remote desaturation reaction of N-alkoxypyridinium salts, which serve as alkoxyl radical precursors. Mechanistic studies show that a single electron transfer between the excited palladium complex and a N-alkoxypyridinium salt initiates a radical chain process leading to desaturation of N-alkoxypyridinium salts. This chain mechanism is supported by the measurement of the quantum yield of this reaction (Φ = 82). This reaction is applicable to a range of N-alkoxypyridinium salts, including some complex molecule-derived ones.

Abstract
A Pd-catalyzed and photoinduced benzylic cascade benzylic C-H carbonylation/annulation reaction is realized under mild conditions (35 °C, 2 bar CO). The use of a catalytic amount of base is crucial for the reaction to achieve high yields. The reaction consists of a Pd-catalyzed generation of amidyl radical from O-benzyl hydroxylamide substrates and 1,5-HAT to give a benzylic radical, followed by carbonylation and annulation. Various homophthalimides, which could be readily converted to a number of bioactive compounds, could be obtained with up to 96% yield.

Abstract
Iminodirhodium reactive intermediates generated in situ from O-tosyloximes using Rh2(esp)2 in CH2Cl2 at rt were exploited for an agile trichotomy of challenging transformations: (1) remote C-H functionalizations using an exceptionally broad diversity of inorganic and organic nucleophiles including several unconventional examples, for example, ethers and acyl silanes; (2) desaturative annulation, a biomimetic 1,3-methylene C-C ring-closure with an overall loss of two hydrogens; and (3) directed desaturation for the acceptor-less, regioselective creation of γ,δ- or γ,δ,ε,ζ-olefins. Compared with typical iminyl transition-metal-mediated and 1,5-hydrogen atom-transfer (1,5-HAT) processes, iminodirhodium intermediates are largely underexplored, especially with respect to C(sp3)-H centers and, yet, have the potential to be transformative by virtue of their substrate breadth, regiocontrol, and elusive reaction modality. A substrate scope includes benzylic, allylic, propargylic, tertiary, and α-alkyloxy centers.

Abstract
A photoinduced palladium-catalyzed desaturation method that is suitable for converting the linear amides to their α,β-unsaturated counterparts is reported. The reaction does not require strong base/acid or sulfur/selenium and oxidant reagents and can be carried out at room temperature through a simple one-step operation. The protocol exhibits great scalability and functional group tolerance. The reaction mechanism has been investigated through deuterium labeling experiments, radical clock, radical capture, and kinetic studies. Mechanistic studies suggested a radical pathway involving aryl/alkyl Pd-radical intermediates.

Abstract
A selective, remote desaturation has been developed to rapidly access homoallyl amines from their aliphatic precursors. The strategy employs a triple H-atom transfer (HAT) cascade, entailing (i) cobalt-catalyzed metal-HAT (MHAT), (ii) carbon-to-carbon 1,6-HAT, and (iii) Co-H regeneration via MHAT. A new class of sulfonyl radical chaperone (to rapidly access and direct remote, radical reactivity) enables remote desaturation of diverse amines, amino acids, and peptides with excellent site-, chemo-, and regioselectivity. The key, enabling C-to-C HAT step in this cascade was computationally designed to satisfy both thermodynamic (bond strength) and kinetic (polarity) requirements, and it has been probed via regioselectivity, isomerization, and competition experiments. We have also interrupted this radical transfer dehydrogenation to achieve γ-selective C-Cl, C-CN, and C-N bond formations.

Abstract
The majority of medicines contain a nitrogen atom within a five- or six- membered ring. To rapidly access both such aza-heterocycles, we sought to develop a remote C-H desaturation of amines. Inspired by the Hofmann-Löffler-Freytag synthesis of five-membered pyrrolidines, we tackled the century-old challenge of synthesizing six-membered piperidines by H-atom transfer. We present herein a double, vicinal C-H oxidation by dual catalysis, entailing Ir photocatalytic initiation of 1,5-HAT by an N-centered radical and Cu-catalyzed interception of the C-centered radical to facilitate desaturation. By this mechanism, two C-H bonds (δ and ε to N) are regioselectively removed from unbiased, remote positions of an alkyl chain. Over 50 examples illustrate efficiency, selectivity, functional group tolerance, and medicinal utility of this synthesis of both internal and terminal δ vinylic amines and aza-heterocycles. Mechanistic experiments probe the alkylcopper intermediate, as well as kinetics and regioselectivity of the HAT and elimination steps.

Abstract
Desaturation of inert aliphatic C-H bonds in alkanes to form the corresponding alkenes is challenging. In this communication, a new and practical strategy for remote site-selective desaturation of amides via radical chemistry is reported. The readily installed N-allylsulfonylamide moiety serves as an N radical precursor. Intramolecular 1,5-hydrogen atom transfer from an inert C-H bond to the N-radical generates a translocated C-radical which is subsequently oxidized and deprotonated to give the corresponding alkene. The commercially available methanesulfonyl chloride is used as reagent and a Cu/Ag-couple as oxidant. The remote desaturation is realized on different types of unactivated sp3 -C-H bonds. The potential synthetic utility of this method is further demonstrated by the dehydrogenation of natural product derivatives and drugs.
