Abstract
An efficient method to construct 4-aryl-substituted β-carbolines from indole-2-methyl-α-aminoketones via a TMSOTf-promoted annulation reaction was reported. High yield along with wide substrate scope and functional group tolerance make this reaction applicable to build various highly potential bioactive β-carboline derivatives.

Abstract
A highly efficient heterogeneous gold(I)-catalyzed heterocyclization of ynamides with benzyl or indolyl azides has been achieved in 1,2-dichloroethane under mild conditions via a heterogenized α-imino gold carbene intermediate using 5 mol% of SBA-15-anchored strongly hindered NHC-gold(I) complex [IPr-SBA-15-AuNTf2] as the catalyst, delivering a wide range of valuable 2-aminoindoles or 3-amino-β-carbolines in mostly good to excellent yields with high regioselectivity. Furthermore, the new heterogenized NHC-gold(I) complex displays the same catalytic activity as IPrAuNTf2 and is facile to recover by centrifugation of the reaction mixture and can be reused at least seven times without any appreciable drop in its catalytic activity.

Abstract
One-pot synthesis of 3,4-benzo[c]-β-carbolines was achieved from 2-aryl(tosylamino)methyl-3-bromoindoles via 10 mol % Pd(OAc)2/PPh3-mediated intramolecular Heck coupling using K2CO3 as a base in DMF at 110 °C with concomitant aromatization through an elimination of tosylsulfinic acid. Under identical conditions, the isomeric 3-aryl(tosylamino)methyl-2-bromoindoles upon intramolecular Heck reaction furnished benzo[4,5]isothiazolo[2,3-a]indole 5,5-dioxides instead of the expected γ-carbolines. However, synthesis of the expected γ-carboline framework, 3-tosyl-6,9-dihydro-1,2-benzo[a]-γ-carbolines, could be achieved from 3-aryl(tosylamino)methyl-2-bromoindoles containing a mesitylene sulfonyl unit as a protecting group on the indole nitrogen.

Abstract
The synthesis of annulated 2-aryl-α-carboline heterocycles is described using transition metal catalysis. A linear strategy is described that uses Rh(I) catalysis to form the α-carboline scaffold by [2+2+2] cyclotrimerization. Alternatively, a tandem catalytic approach using a Pd(II) precatalyst afforded the same target molecules by mediating a Sonogashira reaction and a [2+2+2] cyclotrimerization in the same reaction flask. In each case, nine different 2-aryl-α-carbolines have been prepared in high to modest isolated yields.

Abstract
An efficient acid-catalyzed propargylation/aza-annulation sequence was developed under metal-free reaction conditions, thus leading to a one-pot synthesis of a variety of substituted β-carbolines starting from propargylic alcohols and indole 2-carbonyls. This versatile strategy was further extended to the synthesis of 5-azaindoles and 5-azabenzothiazoles. Optical properties suggested that manipulation of electron donor and acceptor moieties on β-carbolines has an impact on their ground and excited state electronic behavior. This leads to blue or green emission and should facilitate the development of organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs). Electrochemical and stability studies revealed that 4a-6 shows ease of redox activity and photostability during illumination.

Abstract
Two different pathways for the synthesis of annulated pyrido[3,4-b]indoles are reported using metal-catalyzed cyclotrimerization reactions. A stepwise process using Rh(I)-catalysis in the final step of the synthesis and a multicomponent, tandem catalytic approach using Pd(0)-catalysis both lead to complex nitrogen-containing heterocycles in good yields. Substituent effects are investigated for both pathways, demonstrating that the Pd(0)-catalyzed approach is more sensitive to electron- withdrawing groups.

Abstract
An efficient, unified approach for the synthesis of β-carbolines, γ-carbolines, and other fused azaheteroaromatics has been realized under metal-free conditions, from propargylic amines and (hetero)aromatic aldehydes. This unified strategy provides β- and γ-carbolines as well as a range of fused azaheteroaromatics with a broad substrate scope and excellent functional group compatibility. The formal synthesis of oxopropalines D and G has been achieved on gram scale (3a), in a one-pot reaction from commercially available materials (previous shortest reported route to 3a was 5 steps). NMR studies of the conversion of imine intermediate 3aa to β-carboline 3a were conducted and revealed that the reaction proceeded through an allene intermediate.

Abstract
A new series of 7-trifluoromethyl-2-pyridylquinazolin-4(3 H)-one-based acyl thiourea derivatives has been generated and tested for their cytotoxicity towards human ovarian cancer (SK-OV-3), cervical cancer (HeLa), renal cancer (Caki-2) cell lines, as well as noncancerous a human umbilical vein endothelial cell (HUVEC) line. The new thiourea derivatives were found to be promisingly cytotoxic towards the cancerous cell lines. Changing the substituent at the thiourea linkage led to variations in the cytotoxic potential of the resultant derivatives towards specific cell lines. Molecules with fluorine functionality and multiple pyridyl moieties showed encouraging anticancer effects and could be used as a platform for the design of further chemotherapeutic agents. The proposed structures of the products were ascertained through FTIR, mass, 1H NMR and 13C NMR spectra and elemental analyses.
