Abstract
The (3 + 2) cycloaddition of arynes with allylic ylides remains a formidable challenge because both intermediates are highly reactive and prone to spontaneous quenching. Here, we report a (3 + 2) cycloaddition of pyrazolone MBH carbonates with arynes, enabling the efficient synthesis of diverse indene-fused spiropyrazolones. The key is employing a new bifunctional Lewis base catalyst to facilitate the cycloaddition of in situ generated allylic pyridinium ylides with arynes.

Abstract
Spiroannulation of oxindole-3-oxy acrylates with ynones involving two overlapping, base differentiated cascades has been observed. Initial exposure of ynones and oxindole 3-oxy acrylates to K2CO3 triggered a tandem Michael-Michael cascade to deliver a pair of spiroannulated diastereomers. Further exposure to LiHMDS led to deep restructuring through a second multistep cascade involving stereoselective recreation of the C3 quaternary center to furnish 3H-spiro[furan-2,3'-indolin]-2'-ones with functional amplification and scrambling. This new scaffold can be directly accessed in a one-flask operation from ynones and oxindole-3-oxy acrylates.

Abstract
Isatin and its derivatives are important heterocycles found in nature and present in numerous bioactive compounds which possess various biological activities. Moreover, it is an essential building block in organic synthesis. The discovery of novel compounds active against human pathogenic bacteria and fungi is an urgent need, and the isatin may represent the suitable scaffold in the design of biologically relevant antimicrobials. A small library of 18 isatin hybrids was synthetized and evaluated for their antimicrobial potential on three reference strains: S. aureus, E. coli, both important human pathogens infamous for causing community- and hospital-acquired severe systemic infections; and C. albicans, responsible for devastating invasive infections, mainly in immunocompromised individuals. The study highlighted two lead compounds, 6k and 6m, endowed with inhibitory activity against S. aureus at very low concentrations (39.12 and 24.83 µg/mL, respectively).

Abstract
Recursive anion-mediated activation of o-bis-ynones sets off a Michael addition-aldol reaction-dehydrative rearrangement cascade, leading to the one-pot synthesis of 1-indenones via orthogonal interplay between the two ortho-ynone moieties. Repeating the recursive anion engagement with the 1-indenones unfolded access to a functionally embellished cyclopenta[a]inden-8(2H)-one core and its spiroannulated analogues either directly or stepwise through tandem 1,6-Michael-type addition-6π electrocyclization and an in situ oxidation sequence.

Abstract
A convenient one-pot benzannulation of regioisomeric 2- or 3-substituted furan and thiophene ynones with a range of nitromethanes has been discovered to directly access densely and diversely functionalized benzofurans and benzothiophenes. In this protocol, the nitro group in nitromethanes functions as recursive carbanion activator to setup tandem Michael addition-6π-electrocyclization, and its eventual sacrificial elimination facilitates aromatization and overall benzannulation. This benzannulation was also explored with furan/thiophene based o-halo ynones wherein a Michael addition-SNAr process operates and nitromethanes leave their imprint to deliver nitro substituted benzo-furans and -thiophenes.

Abstract
A new class of spiroannulated pyrazolone scaffolds have been assembled from diverse o-haloaryl ynones and β-bromoalkenyl ynones via base mediated, one-pot, metal free, orthogonal strapping (tethering) mediated by the recursive anion(s) derived from pyrazolones. These convenient, preparatively useful transformations proceed through either a tandem Michael addition-intramolecular SNAr reaction or a tandem Michael addition-intramolecular AdNE process to furnish a range of pharmacophoric, diverse, spiroannulated pyrazolones from readily accessible precursors.

Abstract
A palladium-catalysed intramolecular allylic (hetero)arylation strategy for the synthesis of fused cyclopentenes incorporated with all-carbon quaternary and spiro centres is described. The method is straightforward, shows broad scope, proceeds in synthetically useful yields, and provides a rare means to construct complex cyclopentanoids. The reaction is believed to involve a kinetically unfavourable 5-endo-trig carbocyclisation of the tethered (π-allyl)palladium system. Further, this method was successfully applied as the key step in the total synthesis of diterpene natural products taiwaniaquinone H and dichroanone.

The substrate scope of this convenient protocol, wherein ammonium carbonate acts as both an in situ ammonia source and a base toward diverse 2-substituted 4-(1H)-quinolones, has been mapped and its efficacy validated through concise total synthesis of bioactive natural products pseudanes (IV, VII, VIII, and XII), graveoline, graveolinine, and waltherione F.

Abstract
An effective phosphine-catalyzed protocol has been established for the syntheses of 1,3-diketones and nitriles from alkynones with oximes as hydroxide surrogates. This method features the use of a phosphine catalyst, compatibility with various functional groups and ambient temperature, which makes this approach very practical. A plausible mechanism was proposed.

Abstract
A thermally induced, substrate-dependent reaction of alkynyl diazo compounds has been developed. This transformation produces spiro-4H-pyrazole-oxindoles and fused 1H-pyrazoles in good to high yields from the corresponding alpha-cyano and alpha-sulfonyl diazo compounds. The salient features of this reaction include excellent chemoselectivity and atom-economy, mild reaction conditions, simple purification and potential for large scale production.

Abstract
An interesting σ-bond insertion/benzannulation reaction for the synthesis of polysubstituted naphthalene derivatives has been developed from readily accessible ketones, arynes, and alkynoates. This practical and transition-metal-free method provides a novel route to diverse naphthalenes through a substrate-controlled rearrangement reaction with the cleavage of C-C bonds.

Abstract
The synthesis of spiro[indoline-3,2'-pyrrole]-2,5'(1'H)-diones and spiro[indoline-3,2'-pyrrolidine]-2,5'-diones, via a post-Ugi-domino transamidation/cyclization sequential process, has been achieved in three sequential steps utilizing a one-pot reaction protocol. The variation in carboxylic acid substrates allows for the generation of new chiral racemic quaternary carbon centers under basic conditions providing molecular diversity and a small library of spirocyclic oxindoles.
