Abstract
Asymmetric organocatalyzed multicomponent reactions represent an important toolbox in the field of organic synthesis to build complex scaffolds starting from simple starting materials. The Enders three-component cascade reaction was a cornerstone in the field and a plethora of organocatalyzed cascade reactions followed. However, acetaldehyde was not shown as a successful reaction partner, probably because of its high reactivity. Herein, we report the Enders-type cascade reaction using acetaldehyde dimethyl acetal, as a masked form of acetaldehyde. This strategy directly converts acetaldehyde, nitroalkenes and enals into stereochemically dense cyclohexenals in good yield and excellent enantioselectivity.

Abstract
One central challenge for XXI century chemists is the development of sustainable processes that do not represent a risk either to humanity or to the environment. In this regard, the search for more efficient and clean alternatives to achieve the chemical activation of molecules involved in chemical transformations has played a prominent role in recent years. The use of microwave or UV-Vis light irradiation, and mechanochemical activation is already widespread in many laboratories. Nevertheless, an additional condition to achieve "green" processes comes from the point of view of so-called atom economy. The removal of solvents from chemical reactions generally leads to cleaner, more efficient and more economical processes. This review presents several illustrative applications of the use of sustainable protocols in the synthesis of organic compounds under solvent-free reaction conditions.

Abstract
Multicomponent reactions (MCRs) undoubtedly correspond to one of the synthetic strategies that best fit the new demands of chemistry for presenting high atom economy and enabling molecular diversity. However, many challenges still exist when products possessing stereogenic centres are formed. The field of asymmetric catalytic reactions has achieved significant progress in recent decades; new applications for chiral ligands and catalysts have been demonstrated and new catalysts have been specifically designed for challenging chemical conversions. In this sense, highly efficient approaches for classic multicomponent reactions such as the Ugi reaction and a number of new asymmetric MCRs have been described. In this review we discuss the recent developments that enable catalytic enantioselective MCRs including the proposed mechanistic pathways.

Abstract
Benzopyran and benzodihydropyran (chromane) nuclei are the core structure of many natural products, in particular flavonoids. Many compounds possessing this structure are nutraceuticals, pharmaceutical nutrients. Therefore, benzopyran and chromane scaffolds are important building blocks in organic synthesis and many efforts have been made to set up efficient methods for their synthesis. In particular, asymmetric methods are of great importance, being natural products, and generally chiral substances. This review aims to cover literature in the range 2017–first half of 2019.

Abstract
The diastereodivergent synthesis of hexahydro-6H-benzo[c]chromen-6-one derivatives with good to high diastereoselectivities (up to 98:2 d.r.) and enantioselectivities (up to >99 % ee) has been achieved by using a domino Michael/Michael/hemiacetalization reaction between trans-2-hydroxy-β-nitrostyrenes and trans-7-oxo-5-heptenals followed by oxidation. With use of appropriate modularly designed organocatalysts (MDOs) that are self-assembled in situ from amino acid derivatives and cinchona alkaloid derivatives, two different diastereomers of the desired hexahydro-6H-benzo[c]chromen-6-ones are obtained from the same substrates.

Abstract
A one-pot squaramide-catalyzed enantioselective ring-reorganization domino sequence (Michael addition/intramolecular ring-opening/lactamization) of 3-hydroxyoxindole and methyleneindolinone, which can be readily derived from 3-oxindole, has been established in this work. As a result, novel polycyclic quinolinone-spirooxindoles bearing three contiguous chiral centers were efficiently and step-economically assembled under mild conditions in high yields (up to 97%) with excellent enantioselectivities (up to >99% ee) and moderate to good diastereoselectivities (up to >95:5 dr).

Abstract
The competing mechanisms of Ag(i)-catalyzed chemoselective addition reactions of amino alcohols and electron-deficient olefins leading to the O-adduct or N-adduct products were systematically studied with density functional theory methods. Calculations indicate that the AgHMDS/dppe versus AgOAc/dppe catalytic systems can play different roles and thereby generate two different products. The AgHMDS/dppe system works as a Brønsted base to deprotonate the amino alcohol OH to form the Ag–O bond, which leads to formation of the O-adduct. In contrast, the AgOAc/dppe system mainly acts as a Lewis acid to coordinate with O and N atoms of the amino alcohol, but it cannot act as the Brønsted base to further activate the OH group because of its weaker basicity. Therefore, the AgOAc/dppe catalyzed reaction has a mechanism that is similar to the non-catalyzed reaction, and generates the same N-adduct. The obtained insights will be important for rational design of the various kinds of cooperatively catalyzed chemoselective addition reactions, including the use of the less nucleophilic hydroxyl groups of unprotected amino alcohols. The origin of the chemoselectivities of Ag(i)-catalyzed addition reactions of amino alcohols to olefin has been predicted for the first time.![]()
