Abstract
A concise and efficient photo-induced rearrangement and oxidation of 2-(3-methylbenzofuran-2-yl)-3-phenyl-1H-indoles 1 for the synthesis of 5-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-5-methyl-5,7-dihydro-6H-benzocarbazol-6-ones 2 is described. Irradiation of compounds 1 in anhydrous dichloromethane solution, using 313 nm UV light in an air atmosphere, resulted in the formation of compounds 2 with yields ranging from 55% to 98%. Using the 6π-electrocyclization strategy of compounds 1 containing a methyl, a quaternary carbon stereocenter was introduced in the compounds 2. The carbonyl group of compounds 2 was formed by the photo-induced oxidation of C-H bond to C-OH and hemiketal-keto tautomerization. Additionally, the antitumor activities of compounds 2 were evaluated and found to demonstrate equivalent or superior activity compared to Cisplatin against various tumor cell lines, including leukemia HL-60, lung cancer A549, liver cancer HepG2, breast cancer MDA-MB-231 and colon cancer SW480. The anticancer activity of compound 2f was particularly significant, with IC50 values of 2.99, 9.06, 6.81, 9.29, and 14.93 μM respectively, and its IC50 value of normal cells 11.18 μM. Compound 2k had a relatively high IC50 values against cancer cells, whereas its IC50 value greater than 40μM for normal cells.

Abstract
Diversity-oriented synthesis strategy for the efficient assembly of indole-fused polycyclic scaffolds via rhodium-catalyzed NH-indole-directed C-H coupling with propargylic alcohol derivatives in a regioselective manner was developed. Five 2-phenyl-1H-indole-embedded core skeletons were synthesized. In particular, three different indole-fused exo-olefin-containing polycycles were realized, which may be manipulated for further chemistry.

Abstract
A Cu(I)-mediated cascade cyclization/annulation of unprotected o-alkynylanilines with maleimides in one pot is developed. The protocol offers sequential formation of one C-N and two C-C bonds to deliver fused benzo[a]carbazoles having free NH skeletons. The annulated products display fluorescence emission in the range of 485-502 nm with a large Stokes shift and fluorescence lifetime of ∼17 ns. The annulated 3aa displays AEE behavior in the ethanol/hexane system and possesses marigold-flower-like morphology at the aggregated state. Cell viability assays enumerate biocompatible AEEgens, while their high intracellular fluorescence depicts cell imaging applicability.

Abstract
A new method for the direct and stereoselective synthesis of 3-substituted isoindolinones via Rh(iii)-catalyzed chiral N-sulfinyl amide directed asymmetric [4 + 1] annulation of benzamides with acrylic esters has been developed. The reaction proceeded through an oxidative C-H olefination and a subsequent cyclization by intramolecular aza-Michael addition, producing a series of diastereoisomeric chiral isoindolinones (20 examples) in generally good yields with a dr value up to 5.5 : 1. The absolute configurations of the newly formed C-stereocenters in the major and minor diastereomers of the catalysis product have been determined by X-ray crystal diffraction analysis to be S and R, respectively. The separation of the major diastereoisomers from the catalysis products and subsequent removal of the N-sulfinyl chiral auxiliary afforded enantiomerically pure (S)-isoindolinones. The application of the obtained (S)-isoindolinones in the synthesis of several biologically active isoindolinones such as (S)-PD172938, (S)-pazinaclone and (S)-pagoclone is presented.

Abstract
A rhodium-catalyzed formal [4 + 5] annulation reaction of 2-arylindoles with quinone monoacetals for the selective preparation of bridged nine-membered carbocyclic and heterocyclic compounds is developed. When 2-aryl substituted indoles are employed, this annulation reaction affords bridged nine-membered carbocyclic compounds with excellent indolyl C3 selectivity. On the other hand, with 2-aryl-3-substituted indoles as the substrates, bridged nine-membered heterocyclic compounds are exclusively formed via N1 annulation. Further transformations of the obtained products into new bridged compounds showcase the synthetic potential of this protocol.

Abstract
Reported herein is the Rh(III)-catalyzed annulation of N-unprotected 2-arylindoles with quinone monoacetals for the straightforward synthesis of [4,3,1]-bridged carbocycles with exclusive C(3) selectivity. Mechanistic studies, particularly deuterium-labeling experiments, suggest that the coupling likely proceeds via two-fold C-H activation with two-fold migratory insertion into the enone moieties.

Abstract
Rhodium-catalyzed substrate-tunable oxidative annulation and spiroannulation reactions of 2-arylindoles with benzoquinone leading to 9H-dibenzo[a,c]carbazol-3-ols and new spirocyclic products are reported. Intriguingly, with 2-aryl-substituted indoles, benzoquinone could act as a C2 synthon to afford dibenzo[a,c]carbazoles. On the contrary, when 2-aryl-3-substituted indoles were used, benzoquinone switched to act as a C1 synthon to furnish spirocyclic compounds. In addition, further transformations of the obtained products demonstrate the synthetic utility of the present protocol.

Abstract
A regioselective formal [4 + 2] cycloaddition for the assembly of highly functionalized benzene rings was successfully developed. In this reaction, olefinic C-H bond functionalization/cyclization cascade reaction followed by rearomatization led to the desired molecules in one step under mild reaction conditions. This protocol also displays a broad substrate scope and good tolerance to a wide range of functional groups. Additionally, the potential utility for the synthesis of highly conjugated polybenzenes and diversification of natural products was also demonstrated.
