Abstract
Novel construction methods for obtaining 3,4'-pyran spirooxindole heterocyclic skeletons have always been the focus of attention. Herein, we report a highly enantioselective inverse-electron-demand oxa-Diels-Alder cycloaddition reaction of a β,γ-unsaturated pyrazole amide and a N-diphenyl isatin-derived oxodiene using a bifunctional catalyst. In addition, large-scale experiments confirmed the reliability of the reaction. The resultant products of this study can be further transformed.

Abstract
A vinylogous addition reaction of allyl aryl ketones with good yields and excellent regioselectivity catalyzed by squaramide catalysts has been developed. A series of chiral tertiary alcohols and bicyclic pyrrolidones could be synthesized in good to excellent yields, enantioselectivities, and diaseteroselectivities. Both experimental results and DFT calculations indicate that 1,2-addition reaction is favorable when the reaction is employed at a lower temperature, while the 1,4-addition/cyclization pathway is favorable when the reaction is employed at a higher temperature. Furthermore, the formation of compound 4 can potentially arise from either the 1,4-addition/cyclization pathway or retro-aldol reaction of compound 3, followed by subsequent 1,4-addition/cyclization.

Abstract
Herein we report a catalytic asymmetric inverse-electron-demand Diels-Alder reaction between alkylidene pyrazolones and allyl ketones. Allyl ketone gets activated by a bifunctional thiourea catalyst and acts as a dienolate in this reaction. The trisubstituted tetrahydropyrano[2,3-c]pyrazoles were obtained in moderate to good yields with high diastereo- and enantioselectivities. Few applications, including a decarbonylation reaction, have been demonstrated.

Abstract
In this work, the classical "isoxazoline route" toward aldols involving the [3 + 2]-cycloaddition of nitrile oxide to alkenes and hydrogenolysis of the oxime group was revisited. To avoid regioselectivity issues, [4 + 1]-annulation of nitroalkenes with sulfonium ylides was used to construct the isoxazoline ring bearing an N-oxide moiety. Subsequent deoxygenative C-H functionalization using the Boekelheide rearrangement and hydrogenolysis of the isoxazoline ring afforded α'-acyloxy-substituted aldols, which are difficult to access both by the classical aldol reaction and the "isoxazoline route". The products are formed in good to high overall yields and as single diastereomers in most cases. The synthetic use of these aldols was showcased by their smooth transformation into diastereomerically pure triols and a 2,3-diaryl-4-hydroxy-substituted tetrahydrofuran derivative, which is structurally related to cinncassin B.

Abstract
Chiral (dihydro)furo-fused heterocycles are significant structural motifs in numerous natural products, functional materials and pharmaceuticals. Therefore, developing efficient methods for preparing compounds with these privileged scaffolds is an important endeavor in synthetic chemistry. Herein, we develop an effective, modular method by a dipeptide-phosphonium salt-catalyzed regio- and stereoselective cascade reaction of readily available linear β,γ-unsaturated ketones with aromatic alkenes, affording a wide variety of structurally fused heterocyclic molecules in high yields with excellent stereoselectivities. Moreover, mechanistic investigations revealed that the bifunctional phosphonium salt controlled the regio- and stereoselectivities of this cascade reaction, particularly proceeding through the initial ketone α-addition followed by O-participated substitution; and the multiple hydrogen-bonding interactions between Brønsted acid moieties of catalyst and nitro group of aromatic alkene were crucial in asymmetric induction. Given the generality, versatility, and high efficiency of this method, we anticipate that it will have broad synthetic utilities.

Abstract
Catalyst-controlled functionalization of unmodified carbonyl compounds is a relevant operation in organic synthesis, especially when high levels of site- and stereoselectivity can be attained. This objective is now within reach for some subsets of enolizable substrates using various types of activation mechanisms. Recent contributions to this area include enantioselective transformations that proceed via transiently generated noncovalent di(tri)enolate-catalyst coordination species. While relatively easier to form than simple enolate congeners, di(tri)enolates are ambifunctional in nature and so control of the reaction regioselectivity becomes an issue. This Minireview discusses in some detail this and other problems, and how noncovalent activation approaches based on metallic and metal free catalysts have been developed to advance the field.

Abstract
The organocatalytic α-alkylation of vinylogous carbonyl compounds to hydroxynitroolefins for the synthesis of hemiacetals was realized with excellent enantioselectivities and in high yields. High diastereoselectivity (up to >20:1) has been accomplished with the addition of Et3N. The α- and γ-alkylation of vinylogous ketone against nitroolefins displayed high but opposite facial selectivities. Transformation of the hemiacetal products to other polycyclic compounds, including the euroticin B analog, has been demonstrated.

Abstract
The generalization of related asymmetric processes in organocatalyzed reactions is an ongoing challenge due to subtle, noncovalent interactions that drive selectivity. The lack of transferability is often met with a largely empirical approach to optimizing catalyst structure and reaction conditions. This has led to the development of diverse structural catalyst motifs and inspired unique design principles in this field. Bifunctional hydrogen bond donor (HBD) catalysis exemplifies this in which a broad collection of enantioselective transformations has been successfully developed. Herein, we describe the use of data science methods to connect catalyst and substrate structural features of an array of reported enantioselective bifunctional HBD catalysis through an iterative statistical modeling process. The computational parameters used to build the correlations are mechanism-specific based on the proposed transition states, which allows for analysis into the noncovalent interactions responsible for asymmetric induction. The resulting statistical models also allow for extrapolation to out-of-sample examples to provide a prediction platform that can be used for future applications of bifunctional hydrogen bond donor catalysis. Finally, this multireaction workflow presents an opportunity to build statistical models unifying various modes of activation relevant to asymmetric organocatalysis.

Abstract
The investigation of diverse reactivity of β,γ-unsaturated carbonyl compounds is of great value in asymmetric catalytic synthesis. Numerous enantioselective transformations have been well developed with β,γ-unsaturated carbonyl compounds as nucleophiles, however, few example were realized by utilizing them as not only nucleophiles but also electrophiles under a same catalytic system. Here we report a regioselective catalytic asymmetric tandem isomerization/α-Michael addition of β,γ-unsaturated 2-acyl imidazoles in the presence of chiral N,N′-dioxide metal complexes, delivering a broad range of optically pure 1,5-dicarbonyl compounds with two vicinal tertiary carbon stereocenters in up to >99% ee under mild conditions. Meanwhile, stereodivergent synthesis is disclosed to yield all four stereoisomers of products. Control experiments suggest an isomerization process involved in the reaction and give an insight into the role of NEt3. In addition, Mannich reaction and sulfur-Michael addition of β,γ-unsaturated 2-acyl imidazoles proceed smoothly as well under the same catalytic system. The investigation of reactivity of β,γ-unsaturated carbonyl compounds is of great synthetic value, especially in asymmetric transformations. Here, the authors report a catalytic asymmetric tandem isomerization/α-Michael addition of β,γ-unsaturated 2-acyl imidazoles in presence of chiral N,N′-dioxide metal catalysts.

Abstract
Highly arylated α-alkenyl-β-diketones are synthesized via a two-step sequence consisting of (i) potassium tert-butoxide/DMSO-catalyzed (E)-stereoselective C-H functionalization of ketones with acetylenes followed by (ii) magnesium bromide etherate/DIPEA-soft enolization of the formed β,γ-unsaturated ketones and regioselective acylation with acyl chlorides. The method is compatible with a broad range of substrates and shown to be applicable as an intermediate stage in the construction of polyarylated heterocycles.

Abstract
The principle of vinylogy states that the electronic effects of a functional group in a molecule are possibly transmitted to a distal position through interposed conjugated multiple bonds. As an emblematic case, the nucleophilic character of a π-extended enolate-type chain system may be relayed from the legitimate α-site to the vinylogous γ, ε, ..., ω remote carbon sites along the chain, provided that suitable HOMO-raising strategies are adopted to transform the unsaturated pronucleophilic precursors into the reactive polyenolate species. On the other hand, when "unnatural" carbonyl ipso-sites are activated as nucleophiles (umpolung), vinylogation extends the nucleophilic character to "unnatural" β, δ, ... remote sites. Merging the principle of vinylogy with activation modalities and concepts such as iminium ion/enamine organocatalysis, NHC-organocatalysis, cooperative organo/metal catalysis, bifunctional organocatalysis, dicyanoalkylidene activation, and organocascade reactions represents an impressive step forward for all vinylogous transformations. This review article celebrates this evolutionary progress, by collecting, comparing, and critically describing the achievements made over the nine year period 2010-2018, in the generation of vinylogous enolate-type donor substrates and their use in chemical synthesis.

Abstract
Recent developments in controlled C-H functionalization transformations continue to inspire new retrosynthetic disconnections. One tactic in C-H functionalization is the intermolecular C-H insertion reaction of rhodium bound carbenes. These intermediates can undergo highly selective transformations through the modulation of the ligand framework of the rhodium catalyst. This work describes our continued efforts towards differentiating C-H bonds in the same molecule by judicious catalyst choice. Substituted cyclobutanes which exist as a mixture of interconverting conformers and possess neighboring C-H bonds within a highly strained framework are the targets herein for challenging the current suite of catalysts. While most C-H functionalization tactics focus on generating 1,2-disubstituted cyclobutanes via substrate-controlled directing group methods, the regiodivergent methods in this paper provide access to chiral 1,1-disubstituted and cis-1,3-disubstituted cyclobutanes simply by changing the catalyst identity, thus permitting entry to novel chemical space.

Abstract
New types of organocatalytic 1,2-rearrangements, which resemble the Smiles-like or semi-pinacol-like rearrangement, of Michael adducts of 1,3-dicarbonyl-2-alkyl compounds and nitroalkenes have been realized. Unlike the well-known conjugate addition, the reaction affords the 1-phenyl-1-nitroalkanes via unprecedented rearrangement and cascade reactions. Structures of the appropriate products were unambiguously characterized by X-ray crystallography.

Abstract
The formation of cyclobutane rings is a promising strategy in the development of potential drugs and/or synthetic intermediates, typically challenging to obtain due to their constrained nature. In this work, the [2 + 2] photocycloaddition reaction of S,S-dioxobenzothiophene-2-methanol was explored in microcrystalline powders and its outcome was compared to that observed in solution. It was found that the molecular constraints inherited within the crystal lattice provide an optimal environment that leads to photodimer 4 as the major product in ca. 9.6:0.4 diastereomeric ratios with conversions >95%. The photoreaction was analyzed via X-ray, displaying a crystalline-to-amorphous transformation and showing that units of monomer 2 align to generate the corresponding dimer with a syn-head-to-tail regio- and diastereoselectivity. This result contrasted with that obtained in solution, where the diastereomeric ratio varied as a function of the excited state that is generated, to yield mixtures of dimers 4 and 5 (anti-head-to-tail), or exclusively 5 in the triplet-sensitized photoreaction, in the presence of benzophenone. Density functional theory was used to elucidate a plausible detailed mechanism for the phototransformation, which aided in justifying the results that led to the corresponding dimers. X-ray crystallography allowed us to establish the stereochemical assignment of the obtained cyclobutyl rings. Thus, the use of solid-state or solution photochemistry can be used to gain control of diastereo- and regioselectivities in the formation of this important moiety.

Abstract
An efficient and one-pot method has been developed for the enantioselective synthesis of pentacyclic indole derivatives with the yohimbane skeleton via a sequence of asymmetric Michael-Michael-Mannich-reduction-amidation-Bischler-Napieralski-reduction reactions with a high diastereoselectivity and high enantioselectivities (up to >99% ee). The seven-step reaction sequence, which generates five bonds and five stereocenters, can be conducted with a pot-economic synthetic strategy and one-pot operation in good yields. The structure and absolute stereochemistry of two products were confirmed by X-ray crystallography analysis.
