Abstract
The first total synthesis of cadinane sesquiterpenoid alanense A, in which an intramolecular dehydrative Friedel-Crafts alkylation of 2,5-diaryl-2-pentanol is incorporated as a key step, has been achieved. The combinatorial use of p-TsOH·H2O as a catalyst and 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoro-2-propanol (HFIP) as a solvent provides 1,1-disubstituted tetrahydronaphthalene in 97% yield. It was also found that the combination of p-TsOH and HFIP is effective for the removal of phenolic MOM ether.

Abstract

In this work, we
demonstrate how allylative dearomatization of
benzyl chlorides can provide direct access to a variety of semibenzenes.
These scaffolds behave as highly reactive nucleophiles in the presence
of carbocations. In addition, semibenzenes are susceptible to intramolecular
rearrangements rendering a broad scope of functionalized arenes. An
analysis of this new reactivity is reported, as well as the rationale
behind the observed intramolecular reorganizations.

Abstract
A strategy for the synthesis of spirocarbocycles by using chloromethyl arenes as starting materials is described in this paper. The palladium-catalyzed allylative dearomatization and the subsequent ruthenium-catalyzed ring closure metathesis proceeded smoothly under mild conditions to produce the corresponding spirocarbocycle products with moderate to high yields. Benzene-ring-, naphthalene-ring-, and anthracene-ring-containing substrates can be easily transformed into spirocarbocycles by using the proposed method.

Abstract
The asymmetric construction of chiral spiroenones bearing both axial and spiro-central chirality has been established for the first time by a central-to-spiro chirality transfer and a central-to-axial chirality conversion from chiral 2,3-diarylbenzoindolines. Mechanistic studies indicate the hydrogen bonds play important roles in this process, providing an efficient strategy for enantioselective construction of spirocyclic backbones via simultaneously controlling spiro-central and axial chirality in one operation.

Abstract
Treatment of aryl-fused bicyclo[4.2.0]octanols with an oxidant such as phenyliodine diacetate (PIDA) or hypochlorous acid gave dihydrofuran-containing polycyclic aromatic compounds by selective β-cleavage of the cyclobutanol moiety. Mechanistic studies suggest that the oxygen atom of the hydrofuran ring is incorporated from the hydroxy group of the substrate via intramolecular addition. The oxidative transformation should serve as a new method to prepare functionalized polycyclic aromatic compounds.

Abstract
A chemoselective dearomatization of the less reactive benzenoid unit in β-naphthol was developed. Spirocyclization with a reductant constructs a pivotal structure for drug candidates. One-pot oxidative conversion enabled the tandem dearomatization of β-naphthol, producing conjugated tetraenone variants. The potential utility of the product as an F--selective anion sensor was also demonstrated. Theoretical studies revealed the intermediacy of silver-carbenoid species leading to chemoselective spirocyclization over arene cyclopropanation.
