Abstract
The acid-controlled single-component retro-aldol/Michael addition cascade reaction and [4 + 2] cycloaddition of benzofuran-derived azadienes (BDAs) are reported for the first time. Under the conditions of trifluoromethanesulfonic acid as the catalyst and with the addition of water, BDAs initiate the retro-aldol reaction, followed by a 1,4-Michael addition, yielding (arylmethylene)bis(dibenzofuran) products with excellent yields and broad substrate applicability. This represents the first application of BDAs in a retro-aldol reaction. In contrast, in the absence of water and with boron trifluoride etherate as the catalyst, BDAs undergo a [4 + 2] cycloaddition reaction, constructing the spiro[benzofuran-2,3'-benzofuro[3,2-b]pyridine] framework with high yields and diastereoselectivity. The method features mild conditions and high atom economy, and provides a new approach for constructing benzofuran scaffold derivatives.

Abstract
Here we disclose a CuB-catalyzed reaction between aurone-derived α,β-unsaturated imines and styrenes to produce 2-substituted benzofuran derivatives bearing both the γ-boryl functionality and α,β-unsymmetric stereogenic centers. The reaction represents the first transition-metal-catalyzed unsymmetric 1,4-Michael additions of azadienes, which would enrich the arsenal of CuB catalysis in organic synthesis. In addition, the synthetically versatile boron-alkylated products can be elaborated by chemical transformations to useful optically active benzofuran heterocycles.

Abstract
In recent years, visible light-induced reactions of diazo compounds have attracted increasing attention in organic synthesis, leading to improvement of existing reactions, as well as to the discovery of unprecedented transformations. Thus, photochemical or photocatalytic generation of both carbenes and radicals provide milder tools toward these key intermediates for many valuable transformations. However, the vast majority of the transformations represent new reactivity modes of diazo compounds, which are achieved by the photochemical decomposition of diazo compounds and photoredox catalysis. In particular, the use of a redox-active photocatalysts opens the avenue to a plethora of radical reactions. The application of these methods to diazo compounds led to discovery of transformations inaccessible by the classical reactivity associated with carbenes and metal carbenes. In most cases, diazo compounds act as radical sources but can also serve as radical acceptors. Importantly, the described processes operate under mild, practical conditions. This Review describes this subfield of diazo compound chemistry, particularly focusing on recent advancements.

Abstract
In recent decades, the traceless nature of visible photons has been exploited for the development of efficient synthetic strategies for the photoconversion of colourless compounds, namely, photocatalysis, chromophore activation, and the formation of an electron donor/acceptor (EDA) complex. However, the use of photoreactive coloured organic compounds is the optimal strategy to boost visible photons as ideal reagents in synthetic protocols. In view of such premises, the present review aims to provide its readership with a collection of recent photochemical strategies facilitated via direct light absorption by coloured molecules. The protocols have been classified and presented according to the nature of the intermediate/excited state achieved during the transformation.

Abstract
Heterocyclic skeletons are commonly found in various bioactive molecules and pharmaceutical compounds, making them crucial in areas such as medicinal chemistry, materials science, and the realm of natural product synthesis. In recent years, the rapid advancements of visible light methodologies in organic synthesis have shown promising potential for the development of light-induced carbene transfer reactions. This is particularly significant as most organic molecules do not absorb visible light. Free carbene, known for its high activity, is frequently utilized for insertion reactions or cyclopropanation reactions. This review focuses on the photochemical strategy for the construction of heterocyclic skeletons, specifically highlighting the methods that employ visible light-promoted carbene transfer reactions.

Abstract
We report herein an unprecedented enantioselective (4+4) cycloaddition of simple 1,3-dienes with azadienes for the construction of fused eight-membered N-heterocycles. In this transformation, the π-Lewis basic Pd(0) catalyst achieves activation of 1,3-dienes to induce nucleophilic addition to azadienes followed by ring cyclization via a selective terminal allylic substitution. Furthermore, highly efficient and diastereoselective derivatizations of the eight-membered rings provide a facile access to diverse enantiopure fused tetra- to hexacyclic compounds with potential application in medicinal chemistry.

Abstract
The enantioselective synthesis of α-chlorinated carboxylic acid esters with er up to 99:1 and yields up to 82% was achieved via a one-pot multistep protocol starting from α-diazoketones. This process proceeds via a photochemical Wolff rearrangement, trapping of the generated ketene with a chiral Lewis base catalyst, subsequent enantioselective α-chlorination, and a final nucleophilic displacement of the bound catalyst. The obtained products were successfully utilized for stereospecific nucleophilic displacement reactions with N- and S-nucleophiles.

Abstract
By virtue of a fundamentally new reaction model of benzofuran-derived azadienes (BDAs), an unprecedented synthesis of biologically important pyrazoles has been achieved through a tandem [3 + 2] cycloaddition/ring-opening rearrangement reaction of BDAs with nitrile imines. The nature and type of substrates are found to act as a chemical switch to trigger two distinct reaction pathways. A minor modification to the substrates allows the access to spiro-pyrazolines.

Abstract
A protocol for the chemically divergent synthesis of β-lactams and α-amino acid derivatives with isothiourea (ITU) catalysis by switching solvents was developed. The stereospecific Mannich reaction occurring between imine and C(1)-ammonium enolate generated zwitterionic intermediates, which underwent intramolecular lactamization and afforded β-lactam derivatives when DCM and CH3CN were used as solvents. However, when EtOH was used as the solvent, the intermediates underwent an intermolecular esterification reaction, and α-amino acid derivatives were produced. Detailed mechanistic experiments were conducted to prove that these two kinds of products came from the same intermediates. Furthermore, chemically diversified transformations of β-lactam and α-amino acid derivatives were achieved. A protocol for the solvent directed chemically divergent synthesis of β-lactam and α-amino acid derivatives with chiral isothiourea was reported.![]()

Abstract
In the presence of a chiral spiro phosphoric acid catalyst, the asymmetric reaction of disubstituted ketenes with N-H pyrroles occurred to afford enantioenriched C-acylated pyrroles bearing α-stereogenic carbon centres. The described reaction constitutes a rare example of a catalytic asymmetric reaction of ketenes with carbon-based nucleophiles.

Abstract
The regio- and stereoselective addition of C(1)-ammonium enolates - generated in situ from aryl esters and the isothiourea catalyst (R)-BTM - to pyridinium salts bearing an electron withdrawing substituent in the 3-position allows the synthesis of a range of enantioenriched 1,4-dihydropyridines. This represents the first organocatalytic approach to pyridine dearomatisation using pronucleophiles at the carboxylic acid oxidation level. Optimisation studies revealed a significant solvent dependency upon product enantioselectivity, with only toluene providing significant asymmetric induction. Using DABCO as a base also proved beneficial for product enantioselectivity, while investigations into the nature of the counterion showed that co-ordinating bromide or chloride substrates led to higher product er than the corresponding tetrafluoroborate or hexafluorophosphate. The scope and limitations of this process are developed, with enantioselective addition to 3-cyano- or 3-sulfonylpyridinium salts giving the corresponding 1,4-dihydropyridines (15 examples, up to 95 : 5 dr and 98 : 2 er).

Abstract
N-(2,2-Diphenylvinyl)-β-oxoamides are both the structural moiety of biologically active compounds and important synthetic intermediates. Structurally diverse N-(2,2-diphenylvinyl)-β-oxoamides are prepared efficiently from 2-diazo-1,3-dicarbonyl compounds and N-alkyl-2,2-diphenylaziridines via an electrophilic ring opening reaction under two different reaction conditions of reflux and microwave irradiation. 2-Diazo-1,3-dicarbonyl compounds undergo the Wolff rearrangement under heating to generate α-oxoketenes, which electrophilically react with N-alkylaziridines to directly produce structurally diverse N-(2,2-diphenylvinyl)-β-oxoamides in good to excellent yields under microwave irradiation. Microwave irradiation accelerates the reaction obviously and efficiently. Both 2-diazo-1,3-diketones and alkyl 2-diazo-3-oxoalkanoates work well. The reaction is catalyst-free and highly atom economical, involves only loss of nitrogen and does not require additives. The products are useful synthons for the convenient preparation of multisubstituted β-lactam derivatives.

Abstract
An efficient annulation reaction of aurone-derived α,β-unsaturated imines and activated terminal alkynes mediated by triethylamine is described, which enables the facile synthesis of 1,4-dihydrobenzofuro[3,2-b]pyridines in high yields. When the nucleophile of triethylamine was replaced with triphenylphosphine, another class of 1,4-dihydrobenzofuro[3,2-b]pyridines tethered with an additional acrylate motif were obtained instead. These two types of 1,4-dihydrobenzofuro[3,2-b]pyridines could be aromatized in the presence of DBU to afford benzofuro[3,2-b]pyridines, which could also be accessed via a one-pot procedure.

Abstract
A DBU-catalyzed desymmetric [3+2] cycloaddition between para-quinamines and photogenerated ketenes was developed for the first time. Under the irradiation of low-energy blue LEDs, a variety of hydroindoles bearing all-carbon quaternary centers were produced with good reaction efficiency and complete diastereoselectivity (34 examples, 45-99% yields and >95 : 5 dr). This protocol represents a new approach to synthetically significant hydroindoles, and features broad substrate scope, high functional group compatibility and mild reaction conditions.

Abstract
1,4,8-Triazaocta-1,3,5,7-tetraenes, generated in situ by Rh2(Piv)4-catalyzed denitrogenative coupling of pyrazoles with 1-sulfonyl-1,2,3-triazoles, smoothly form 2,6,8-triazabicyclo[3.2.1]octa-3,6-dienes via intramolecular aza-Diels-Alder cycloaddition. This domino reaction, combined with the subsequent thermal or acid-catalyzed rearrangement of the cycloadducts, provides direct and flexible access to N-sulfonylated (Z)-2-(2-aminovinyl)imidazoles.

Abstract
Aurone-derived azadienes are well-known four-atom synthons for direct [4 + n] cycloadditions owing to their s-cis conformation as well as the thermodynamically favored aromatization nature of these processes. However, distinct from this common reactivity, herein we report an unusual formal migrative annulation with siloxy alkynes initiated by [2 + 2] cycloaddition. Unexpectedly, this process generates benzofuran-fused nitrogen heterocyclic products with formal substituent migration. This observation is rationalized by less common [2 + 2] cycloaddition followed by 4π and 6π electrocyclic events. DFT calculations provided support to the proposed mechanism.

Abstract
We present herein a highly diastereo- and enantioselective Pd-catalyzed [4 + 2] cycloaddition of benzofuran-derived azadienes with vinyl benzoxazinanones, which represents a rare highly stereoselective cycloaddition of this class of fused azadienes as a two-atom synthon. The use of a phosphoramidite ligand bearing a chiral secondary amine with a simple biphenyl backbone proved to be the key to construct the novel spirocyclic tetrahydroquinoline scaffold containing three contiguous stereocenters as a single diastereomer in high enantioselectivity.

Abstract
![]()
For the first time,
a detailed study on the photophysical properties
of variously substituted diazoketones and on their photoreactivity
under blue LED irradiation was carried out. Despite very limited absorbance
in the visible region, we have demonstrated that, independently from
their structure, α-diazoketones all undergo a very efficient
Wolff rearrangement. Contrarily to the same UV-mediated reaction,
where photons can give rise to side processes, in this case, almost
all absorbed photons are selective and effective, and the quantum
yield is close to 100%. If the rearrangement is carried out in the
presence of isocyanides and carboxylic acids/silanols, the photoreactivity
is not affected, and the resulting ketenes can afford α-acyloxy-
and α-silyloxyacrylamides through two distinct multicomponent
reactions, performed both in batch and under continuous flow, with
improved selectivity and broader scope. These photoinduced multicomponent
reactions can be coupled with other visible-light-mediated transformations,
thus increasing the diversity of the molecules obtainable by this
approach.

Abstract
The direct regio- and enantioselective C6 functionalization of 2,3-disubstituted indoles with azadienes has been developed using chiral phosphoric acid as catalyst, providing a convenient approach to synthesize the optically active heterotriarylmethanes with excellent yields, broad substrate scope, and up to 98% ee. Mechanistic studies revealed that N-alkylation of 2,3-disubstituted indoles with azadienes would be reversible, and enantioselective C6 functionalization could be enabled.

Abstract
A new Lewis acid-catalyzed [2 + 2] cycloaddition/retroelectrocyclization (CA-RE)/1,6-addition relay of aurone-derived 1-azadienes and 1-alkynylnaphthalen-2-ols has been reported, leading to the regio- and diastereoselective synthesis of 1,2-dihydrobenzofuro[3,2-b]pyridine with a chiral carbon center and an axial chirality in good yields. This protocol enables the C-C double-bond scission/recombination to rapidly construct aza-heterocyclic architectures and features 100% atom utilization, a wide substrate scope, good compatibility with substituents, and excellent diastereoselectivity.

Abstract
Highly enantiopure and bioactive δ-valerolactones and pyrazolones, bearing α-all-carbon quaternary stereocentres, were successfully and sequentially prepared via a one-pot procedure starting from readily available, inexpensive materials, catalysed by a new chiral squaramide under mild reaction conditions. An organocatalytic Michael reaction afforded the valerolactones, while a one-pot Michael-hydrazinolysis-imidization cascade yielded the pyrazolones. This procedure is economically efficient and environmentally benign.

Abstract
N-Heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) are efficient Lewis basic catalysts for the umpolung of various polarized unsaturated compounds usually including aldehydes, imines, acyl chlorides and activated esters. NHC catalysis involving electron pair transfer steps has been extensively studied; however, NHC catalysis through single-electron transfer (SET) processes, despite having the potential to achieve chemical transformations of inert chemical bonds and using green reagents, has long been a challenging task in organic synthesis. In parallel, visible-light-induced photocatalysis and photoexcitation have been established as powerful tools to facilitate sustainable organic synthesis, as they enable the generation of various reactive radical intermediates under extremely mild conditions. Recently, a number of elegant visible-light-induced, NHC-catalyzed transformations were developed for accessing valuable organic compounds. As a result, this minireview will highlight the recent advances in this field.

Abstract
An isothiourea-catalysed enantioselective synthesis of novel tetrahydroindolizine derivatives is reported through a one-pot tandem sequential process. The application of 2-(pyrrol-1-yl)acetic acid in combination with either a trifluoromethyl enone or an α-keto-β,γ-unsaturated ester in an enantioselective Michael addition–lactonisation process, followed by in situ ring-opening and cyclisation, led to a range of 24 tetrahydroindolizine derivatives containing three stereocentres in up to >95 : 5 dr and >99 : 1 er. The isothiourea-catalysed enantioselective synthesis of tetrahydroindolizine derivatives containing three stereocentres is reported through a one-pot tandem sequential process.![]()
