Abstract
Herein, we report a Pd-catalyzed β-C(sp3)-H biarylation of native amides using diaryliodonium salts. A pyridine-3-sulfonic acid ligand that might stabilize the substrate-bound palladium species was found to be essential for high catalytic activity. The reaction displayed a broad scope and showed excellent compatibility with diverse cyclic diaryliodonium salts and amide substrates. The retained iodo functionality on the product provides a versatile handle for further increasing molecular complexity.

Abstract
For the first time, a photoredox-catalyzed alkoxycarbonylation/tricyclization reaction was developed by employing readily accessible enediynes and alkyloxalyl chlorides as starting materials, enabling the synthesis of ester-substituted polycyclic N-heteroaromatics under mild conditions through a radical-mediated mechanism. This photocatalytic strategy is notable for its exceptional compatibility with diverse functional groups, scalability, and efficiency in the formation of rings and chemical bonds. Notably, continuous flow photocatalysis technology markedly improved these reactions compared to the equivalent batch reactions, efficiently decreasing the reaction times to merely 40 min.

Abstract
Biaryl motifs are essential structural features in several drugs and functional molecules. Cyclic diaryliodonium has been scarcely explored as a bifunctional agent compared to ring opening and annulation reactions. Herein, a three-component cascade approach is developed to synthesize bifunctionalized biaryls employing cyclic diaryliodoniums as a biarylating agent. The mild conditions enabled a vast array of biarylated products in good yields in a single step. Furthermore, preliminary mechanistic details and photophysical properties have been investigated.

Abstract
A photocatalyzed radical-initiated tricyclization of enediynes was developed to synthesize a range of hitherto unknown sulfonated chromenoquinolines with moderate to excellent yields under continuous operational conditions. The reaction mechanism involves a complex series of steps including alkyl radical capture by sulfur dioxide (SO2), radical addition, 6-exo-dig/6-exo-dig/6-endo-trig tricyclization, and single electron transfer (SET). This cascade of reactions results in the direct formation of a pentacyclic framework structure, along with the creation of up to three new rings and five chemical bonds in a single step. This photocatalytic protocol exhibits a diverse substrate scope, remarkable tolerance to functional groups, and scalable adaptability.

Abstract
A straightforward preparation of diversified fluorinated indol-3-yl ketones was developed by the direct decarboxylative fluoroacylation of indole carboxylic acids. The reaction could be performed on a gram scale under net conditions. Neither a metal catalyst nor an additive was employed. This methodology featured simple reaction conditions, high efficiency, exclusive selectivity, a broad substrate scope, and easy operation, which allowed it to meet the green chemistry requirement of the modern pharmaceutical industry. Control experiments confirmed that a radical process might be involved in the tandem decarboxylative fluoroacylation sequence.

Abstract
This review summarizes the structural and synthetic aspects of heterocyclic molecules incorporating an atom of a hypervalent main-group element. The term "hypervalent" has been suggested for derivatives of main-group elements with more than eight valence electrons, and the concept of hypervalency is commonly used despite some criticism from theoretical chemists. The significantly higher thermal stability of hypervalent heterocycles compared to their acyclic analogs adds special features to their chemistry, particularly for bromine and iodine. Heterocyclic compounds of elements with double bonds are not categorized as hypervalent molecules owing to the zwitterionic nature of these bonds, resulting in the conventional 8-electron species. This review is focused on hypervalent heterocyclic derivatives of nonmetal main-group elements, such as boron, silicon, nitrogen, carbon, phosphorus, sulfur, selenium, bromine, chlorine, iodine(III) and iodine(V).

Abstract
Herein, metal- and oxidant-free synthesis of 7-bromobenzo[c]chromeno[4,3,2-gh]phenanthridines is reported using N-bromosuccinimide. Sequential regioselective bromination, intramolecular ring cyclization, and aromatization reactions occur in a single step through a successive radical-catalyzed pathway. The mechanistic pathway for the cyclization is supported by a DFT study. Selective bromination in the fully aromatic skeleton is accomplished without involving additional aromatic electrophilic ring bromination. As a synthetic application, the Suzuki coupling reaction of compound 5a with boronic acid is reported to get compound 8a. Aggregation-induced emission of one of the synthesized compounds (5h) is also investigated in THF/hexane solvent along with concentration-dependent emission spectroscopy.

Abstract
A microwave-promoted, one-pot, three-component synthesis of N-arylindoles has been developed, utilising sequential Fischer indolisation then copper(i)-catalysed indole N-arylation. Novel arylation conditions were identified that use a simple and cheap catalyst/base system (Cu2O/K3PO4) in an environmentally benign solvent (ethanol), with no requirement for ligands, additives or exclusion of air or water, and microwave irradiation enabled significant acceleration of this commonly sluggish process. These conditions were designed to dovetail with Fischer indolisation, and the resulting one-pot, two-step sequence is rapid (total reaction time = 40 minutes), operationally straightforward, generally high yielding and it draws upon readily available hydrazine, ketone/aldehyde and aryl iodide building blocks. This process shows broad substrate tolerance and we have demonstrated its utility in the synthesis of 18 N-arylindoles bearing varied and useful functionality.

Abstract
Owing to the recent renewed interest and groundbreaking advances in hypervalent chemistry, cyclic diaryliodonium salts have had a myriad of unique applications in the past decade. Their numerous properties, such as an efficient dual arylation mechanism, straightforward one-pot synthesis compatibility, wide substrate scope, and functionalization tolerance, have made them appropriate starting materials for many bioactive compounds. Fluorenes, thiophenes, carbazoles, phenanthrenes, and many other useful cyclic bioactive molecules that are essential for pharmaceutical synthesis can be readily accessed from cyclic diaryliodonium salts. Particular focus has been given to the high optical activity and good enantiomeric excess of the products that facilitate the easy formation of many difficult-to-obtain optical isomers, such as atropisomers. This review aims to compile and summarize all the recent advances in synthesizing methodologies to prepare the important compounds where cyclic diaryliodonium salt is an integral part of the methodologies and would hopefully provide a good foundation for further research on this topic.

Abstract
Hypervalent aryliodoumiums are intensively investigated as arylating agents. They are excellent surrogates to aryl halides, and moreover they exhibit better reactivity, which allows the corresponding arylation reactions to be performed under mild conditions. In the past decades, acyclic aryliodoniums are widely explored as arylation agents. However, the unmet need for acyclic aryliodoniums is the improvement of their notoriously low reaction economy because the coproduced aryl iodides during the arylation are often wasted. Cyclic aryliodoniums have their intrinsic advantage in terms of reaction economy, and they have started to receive considerable attention due to their valuable synthetic applications to initiate cascade reactions, which can enable the construction of complex structures, including polycycles with potential pharmaceutical and functional properties. Here, we are summarizing the recent advances made in the research field of cyclic aryliodoniums, including the nascent design of aryliodonium species and their synthetic applications. First, the general preparation of typical diphenyl iodoniums is described, followed by the construction of heterocyclic iodoniums and monoaryl iodoniums. Then, the initiated arylations coupled with subsequent domino reactions are summarized to construct polycycles. Meanwhile, the advances in cyclic aryliodoniums for building biaryls including axial atropisomers are discussed in a systematic manner. Finally, a very recent advance of cyclic aryliodoniums employed as halogen-bonding organocatalysts is described.

Abstract
Highly selective and switchable [4+2] annulations of 2-arylindoles with iodonium ylides were achieved by performing solvent-controlled Rh(III)-catalyzed C-H activations. When using DCM as a solvent, the C-H functionalization of 2-arylindoles with iodonium ylides selectively delivered indolo[2,1-a]isoquinoline derivatives. In contrast, the same catalytic system with a polar HFIP solvent predominately provided benzo[a]carbazole moieties.

Rapid access to polycyclic N-heteroarenes from unactivated, simple azines via a base-promoted Minisci-type annulation. Nat Commun 2022; 13:2421. Abstract
Conventional synthetic methods to yield polycyclic heteroarenes have largely relied on metal-mediated arylation reactions requiring pre-functionalised substrates. However, the functionalisation of unactivated azines has been restricted because of their intrinsic low reactivity. Herein, we report a transition-metal-free, radical relay π-extension approach to produce N-doped polycyclic aromatic compounds directly from simple azines and cyclic iodonium salts. Mechanistic and electron paramagnetic resonance studies provide evidence for the in situ generation of organic electron donors, while chemical trapping and electrochemical experiments implicate an iodanyl radical intermediate serving as a formal biaryl radical equivalent. This intermediate, formed by one-electron reduction of the cyclic iodonium salt, acts as the key intermediate driving the Minisci-type arylation reaction. The synthetic utility of this radical-based annulative π-extension method is highlighted by the preparation of an N-doped heptacyclic nanographene fragment through fourfold C–H arylation. The functionalisation of unactivated azines has been restricted because of their intrinsic low reactivity. Here the authors show a transition-metal-free, radical relay π-extension approach to produce N-doped polycyclic aromatic compounds directly from simple azines and cyclic iodonium salts.

Abstract
Amine-functionalized covalent organic frameworks (COFs) hold great potential in diversified applications. However, the synthesis is dominated by postsynthetic modification, while the de novo synthesis allowing for direct installation of amine groups remains a formidable challenge. Herein, we develop a site-selective synthetic strategy for the facile preparation of amine-functionalized hydrazone-linked COF for the first time. A new monomer 2-aminoterephthalohydrazide (NH2-Th) bearing both amine and hydrazide functionalities is designed to react with benzene-1,3,5-tricarbaldehyde (Bta). Remarkably, the different activity of amine and hydrazide groups toward aldehyde underpin the highly site-selective synthesis of an unprecedented NH2-Th-Bta COF with abundant free amine groups anchored in the well-defined pore channels. Interestingly, NH2-Th-Bta COF exhibits dramatically enhanced iodine uptake capacity (3.58 g g-1) in comparison to that of the nonfunctionalized Th-Bta COF counterpart (0.68 g g-1), and many reported porous adsorbents, despite its low specific surface area. Moreover, NH2-Th-Bta COF possesses exceptional cycling capability and retained high iodine uptake, even after six cycles. This work not only provides a simple and straightforward route for the de novo synthesis of amine-functionalized COFs but also uncovers the great potential of amine-functionalized COFs as adsorbents in the efficient removal of radioiodine and beyond.

Abstract
A general and efficient rhodium-catalyzed redox-neutral annulation of N-acetoxyacetanilides, readily accessible from nitroarenes, with alkynes has been accomplished for the synthesis of substituted indole derivatives. A wide range of substituted 2,3-diarylindoles were achieved from various substituted N-acetoxyacetanilides and symmetrical/unsymmetrical alkynes in good to excellent yields. The developed method was successfully integrated with the synthesis of N-acetoxyacetanilides for the efficient one-pot synthesis of indoles from nitroarenes. The important features are the introduction of N-acetoxyacetamide as a new directing group, redox-neutral annulation, an additive-free approach, wide functional group tolerance, an intramolecular version, and a one-pot reaction of nitroarenes. The method was further extended to the synthesis of potent higher analogues of indole, viz., pyrrolo[3,2-f]indoles and dibenzo[a,c]carbazoles. In addition, a plausible mechanism was proposed based on the isolation and stoichiometric study of a potential aryl-Rh intermediate.

Abstract
A novel approach to the preparation of imidazole-substituted cyclic iodonium salts has been developed via the oxidative cyclization of 1-phenyl-5-iodoimidazole using a cheap and available Oxone/H2SO4 oxidative system. The structure of the new polycyclic heteroarenes has been confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffractometry, revealing the characteristic structure features for cyclic iodonium salts. The newly produced imidazole-flanked cyclic iodonium compounds were found to readily engage in a heterocyclization reaction with elemental sulfur, affording benzo[5,1-b]imidazothiazoles in good yields.

Abstract
Developments in synthetic chemistry are increasingly driven by improvements in the selectivity and sustainability of transformations. Bifunctional reagents, either as dual coupling partners or as a coupling partner in combination with an activating species, offer an atom-economic approach to chemical complexity, while suppressing the formation of waste. These reagents are employed in organic synthesis thanks to their ability to form complex organic architectures and empower novel reaction pathways. This Review describes several key bifunctional reagents by showcasing selected cornerstone research areas and examples, including radical reactions, C-H functionalization, cross-coupling, organocatalysis and cyclization reactions.

Abstract
An efficient asymmetric halogenation of cyclic diaryliodonium salts is demonstrated, which gives access to a wide range of axially chiral 2,2'-dihalobiaryls in good to excellent yields and with excellent enantioselectivities. The use of CuX with chiral bisoxazoline ligand and tetrabutylammonium halides in the unique solvent of hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP) led to the best results in the process. The axially chiral 2,2'-dihalobiaryls can be transformed into a number of enantiopure chiral ligands that could be potentially useful in asymmetric catalysis.

Abstract
The annulative π-extension (APEX) reactions through C-H bond activation has
tremendous potential to access fused aromatic systems from relatively simple aromatic
compounds in a single step. This state-of-the-art technique has the ability to streamline the
synthesis of functionalized materials useful in material science, biomedical research, agroand
pharmaceutical industries. Furthermore, C-H activation strategy does not require prefunctionalization
steps, which allows for the late-stage modification of the functional
molecule with requisite molecular properties. Owing to their unique photophysical properties,
carbazoles are widely used in photovoltaic cells, biomedical imaging, fluorescent
polymer, etc. It is also ubiquitously found in many natural products, agrochemicals and
privileged medicinal scaffolds. Hence, direct conversion of easily accessible indole to carbazole
remains an active research area. In the last decades, significant advancement has
been made to access carbazole moiety directly from indole through cascade C-H activation. The underlying
mechanism behind this cascade π-extension strategy is the facile electrophilic metalation at the C-3 position of
the indole moiety, 1,2- migration and electro cyclization. In this review, we will discuss recent literature reports
for the palladium-catalyzed π-extension of indole to carbazole moiety through C-H bond activation.

Abstract
Dual activation of both C-I and vicinal C-H bonds of diaryliodonium salts allowing for diarylation is a subject of rapid construction of π-extended frameworks. Here, we report palladium-catalyzed cascade of C8-arylation/intramolecular Friedel-Crafts acylation of α-naphthoic acids in the synthesis of benzanthrone derivatives. The step-economical protocol tolerates various substrates, which resulted in a potential molecular library for developing functional polycyclic scaffolds. The approach relies on the synergistic action of strong acid with palladium catalysts to form two bonds in a one-pot procedure.

Abstract
Here, we describe a highly selective Pd-catalyzed C(sp3)-H biarylation of 2-methylbenzaldehydes using cyclic diaryliodonium salts as arylation reagents. The key strategy is the employment of tert-leucine as a bidentate transient directing group for the proximity-driven metalation to achieve reactivity and selectivity in C-H activation. Various functionalized biaryls bearing both aldehyde and iodine functional groups were prepared successfully, which could be further transformed into a wide range of compounds with potential applications in pharmaceutical chemistry and materials science.
