Mechanism and Performance Analysis of Nanoparticle-Polymer Fluid for Enhanced Oil Recovery: A Review

With the increasing energy demand, oil is still an important fuel source worldwide. The chemical flooding process is used in petroleum engineering to increase the recovery of residual oil. As a promising enhanced oil-recovery technology, polymer flooding still faces some challenges in achieving this goal. The stability of a polymer solution is easily affected by the harsh reservoir conditions of high temperature and high salt, and the influence of the external environment such as high salinity, high valence cations, pH value, temperature and its own structure is highlighted. This article also involves the introduction of commonly used nanoparticles, whose unique properties are used to improve the performance of polymers under harsh conditions. The mechanism of nanoparticle improvement on polymer properties is discussed, that is, how the interaction between them improves the viscosity, shear stability, heat-resistance and salt-tolerant performance of the polymer. Nanoparticle-polymer fluids exhibit properties that they cannot exhibit by themselves. The positive effects of nanoparticle-polymer fluids on reducing interfacial tension and improving the wettability of reservoir rock in tertiary oil recovery are introduced, and the stability of nanoparticle-polymer fluid is described. While analyzing and evaluating the research on nanoparticle-polymer fluid, indicating the obstacles and challenges that still exist at this stage, future research work on nanoparticle-polymer fluid is proposed.

Hydrophobically modified silica nanolaces-armored water-in-oil pickering emulsions with enhanced interfacial attachment energy

HYPOTHESIS

Anisotropic particles with a high aspect ratio led to favorable interfacial adhesion, thus enabling Pickering emulsion stabilization. Herein, we hypothesized that pearl necklace-shaped colloid particles would play a key role in stabilizing water-in-silicone oil (W/S) emulsions by taking advantage of their enhanced interfacial attachment energy.

EXPERIMENTS

We fabricated hydrophobically modified silica nanolaces (SiNLs) by depositing silica onto bacterial cellulose nanofibril templates and subsequently grafting alkyl chains with tuned amounts and chain lengths onto the nanograins comprising the SiNLs.

FINDINGS

The SiNLs, of which nanograin has the same dimension and surface chemistry as the silica nanospheres (SiNSs), showed more favorable wettability than SiNSs at the W/S interface, which was supported by the approximately 50 times higher attachment energy theoretically calculated using the hit-and-miss Monte Carlo method. The SiNLs with longer alkyl chains from C6 to C18 more effectively assembled at the W/S interface to produce a fibrillary interfacial membrane with a 10 times higher interfacial modulus, preventing water droplets from coalescing and improving the sedimentation stability and bulk viscoelasticity. These results demonstrate that the SiNLs acted as a promising colloidal surfactant for W/S Pickering emulsion stabilization, thereby allowing the exploration of diverse pharmaceutical and cosmetic formulations.

Amphiphilic Bowl-Shaped Janus Particles Prepared via Thiol-Ene Click Reaction for Effective Oil-Water Separation

Janus particles for oil-water separation have attracted widespread attention in recent years. Herein, we prepared a bowl-shaped Janus particle that could rapidly separate oil and water through a thiol-ene click reaction and selective etching. Firstly, snowman-like composite microspheres based on silica and mercaptopropyl polysilsesquioxane (SiO₂@MPSQ) were prepared by a hydrolytic condensation reaction and phase separation, and the effects of the rotational speed and molar ratios on their microscopic morphologies were investigated. Subsequently, bowl-shaped Janus particles with convex hydrophilic and concave oleophilic surfaces were prepared via a thiol-ene click reaction followed by HF etching. Our amphiphilic bowl-shaped Janus particles could remarkably separate micro-sized oil droplets from an n-heptane-water emulsion with a separation efficiency of >98% within 300 s. Based on the experimental and theoretical results, we proposed the underlying mechanism for the coalescence of oil droplets upon the addition of the amphiphilic bowl-shaped Janus particles.

Anisotropic Janus materials: from micro-/nanostructures to applications

Janus materials have led to great achievements in recent years owing to their unique asymmetric structures and properties. In this review, recent advances of Janus materials including Janus particles and Janus membranes are summarized, and then the microstructures and applications of Janus materials are emphasized. The asymmetric wettability of Janus materials is related to their microstructures; hence, the microstructures of Janus materials were analyzed, compared and summarized. Also presented are current and potential applications in sensing, drug delivery, oil-water separation and so on. Finally, a perspective on the research prospects and development of Janus materials in more fields is given.

Facile asymmetric modification of graphene nanosheets using κ-carrageenan as a green template

The synthesis of Janus nanosheets using κ-carrageenan (κ-Ca) as a green template endows a greener and more straightforward method compared to traditional approaches of using wax template. We hypothesize that the hydrogen bonding interaction between κ-Ca and graphene oxide (GO) allows partial masking of GO's single facet, paving the way for the asymmetric modification of the exposed surface. GO is first encapsulated within the porous hydrogel matrix formed by κ-Ca to isolate one of the facets. The exposed surface was then selectively hydrophobized to produce an amphiphilic asymmetrically modified graphene oxide (AMGO). The properties of AMGO synthesized under different κ-Ca/GO ratios were studied. The κ-Ca/GO interactions and the properties of GO and AMGO were investigated and characterized. AMGO was successfully produced with a yield of 90.37 % under optimized synthesis conditions. The separation of κ-Ca and AMGO was conducted without organic solvents, and the κ-Ca could be subsequently recovered. Furthermore, the porous hydrogel matrix formed by κ-Ca and GO exhibited excellent shape-retaining properties with high thermal tolerance of up to 50 °C. Given these benefits, this newly developed method endows sustainability and open the possibility of formulating more flexible material synthesis protocols.
