Evolution and Reconstruction of Air-Electrode Surface Composition in Reversible Protonic Ceramic Cells: Mechanisms, Impacts on Catalytic Performance, and Optimization Strategies - A Review

Reversible protonic ceramic cells (R-PCCs) are at the forefront of electrochemical conversion devices, capable of reversibly and efficiently converting chemical energy into electricity at intermediate temperatures (350-700 °C) with zero carbon emissions. However, slow surface catalytic reactions at the air-electrode often hinder their performance and durability. The electrode surface is not merely an extension of the bulk structure, equilibrium reconstruction can lead to significantly different crystal-plane terminations and morphologies, which are influenced by material's intrinsic properties and external reaction conditions. Understanding electrode surface evolution at elevated temperatures in water-containing, oxidative atmospheres presents significant importance. In this review, a comprehensive summary of recent processes in applying advanced characterization techniques for high-temperature electrode surfaces is provided, exploring the correlations between surface evolution and performance fluctuations by examining the structural evolution and reconstruction of various air-electrode surfaces associated with degradation and activation phenomena, offering insights into their impact on electrode performance. Furthermore, reported strategies and recent advances in enhancing the electrochemical performance of R-PCCs through engineering air-electrode surfaces is discussed. This review offers valuable insights into surface evolution in R-PCCs and is expected to guide future developments in high-temperature catalysis, solid-state ionics, and energy materials.

Insight of BaCe0.5Fe0.5O3- δ twin perovskite oxide composite for solid oxide electrochemical cells

One-pot synthesized twin perovskite oxide composite of BaCe0.5Fe0.5O3- δ (BCF), comprising cubic and orthorhombic perovskite phases, shows triple-conducting properties for promising solid oxide electrochemical cells. Phase composition evolution of BCF under various conditions was systematically investigated, revealing that the cubic perovskite phase could be fully/partially reduced into the orthorhombic phase under certain conditions. The reduction happened between the two phases at the interface, leading to the microstructure change. As a result, the corresponding apparent conducting properties also changed due to the difference between predominant conduction properties for each phase. Based on the revealed phase composition, microstructure, and electrochemical properties changes, a deep understanding of BCF's application in different conditions (oxidizing atmospheres, reducing/oxidizing gradients, cathodic conditions, and anodic conditions) was achieved. Triple-conducting property (H+/O2-/e-), fast open-circuit voltage response (∼16-∼470 mV) for gradients change, and improved single-cell performance (∼31% lower polarization resistance at 600°C) were comprehensively demonstrated. Besides, the performance was analyzed under anodic conditions, which showed that the microstructure and phase change significantly affected the anodic behavior.

Proton Conductive Lanthanide-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks: Synthesis Strategies, Structural Features, and Recent Progress

In the fields of proton exchange membrane fuel cells as well as impedance recognition, molecular sieve, and biochemistry, the development of proton conductive materials is essential. The design and preparation of the next generation of proton conductive materials-crystalline metal-organic framework (MOF) materials with high proton conductivity and excellent water stability-are facing great challenges. Due to the large radius and high positive charge of lanthanides, they often interact with organic ligands to exhibit high coordination numbers and flexible coordination configurations, resulting in the higher stability of lanthanide-based MOFs (Ln-MOFs) than their transition metal analogues, especially regarding water stability. Therefore, Ln-MOFs have attracted considerable attention. This review offers a view of the latest progress of proton conductive Ln-MOFs, including synthesis strategy, structural characteristics, and advantages, proton conductivity, proton conductive mechanism, and applications. More importantly, by discussing structure-property relationships, we searched for and analyzed design techniques and directions of development of Ln-MOFs in the future.
