Highly Efficient Permeation and Separation of Gases with Metal-Organic Frameworks Confined in Polymeric Nanochannels

Unveiling the Potential of Pt Nanoparticle-Decorated PEDOT:PSS Membranes for Efficient Gas Separation

In the dynamic landscape of industrial processes, membrane technology offers a paradigm shift beyond energy-intensive separation techniques, exemplifying a progressive leap toward sustainability. In this regard, highly flexible and uniform poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)polystyrenesulfonate (PEDOT:PSS)-engineered membranes at a reduced thickness have been fabricated on track-etched poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) substrates. The membranes were functionalized and embedded with platinum nanoparticles (Pt NPs) having a higher affinity toward H2 gas. The materials and fabricated membranes were characterized by using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) techniques for morphological and structural analysis. FTIR and Raman characterizations were performed to study the characteristic bonds. The uniformity and quantification of Pt nanoparticle binding were tested through inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) studies and FESEM with EDS mapping. The gas separation performance was studied using H2, N2, and CO2 gases in pure and mixed (H2/CO2 in 50:50) states. It was observed that the modified membrane showed a 116% increment in H2 permeability and 82 and 107% increment in H2/CO2 and H2/N2 selectivity values with pure gas, while a 121% increment in H2 permeability and 156% increment in H2/CO2 selectivity using mixed gas. The separation performance in pure and mixed gas states with repeated experiments conspicuously highlighted their prospective viability as prime contenders for gas separation applications.

Construction of a nanoscale metal-organic framework aptasensor for fluorescence ratiometric sensing of AFB1 in real samples

Aflatoxins B1 (AFB1) that could contaminate agricultural products has received sustained attention due to its high toxicity and wide distribution. Therefore, sensitive and facile detection method for AFB1 is significant for food safety and control. In this work, a ratiometric fluorescence NMOFs-Aptasensor was developed based on the combination of Cy3-modified aptamer and zirconium-based nanoscale metal-organic frameworks (NMOFs). NMOFs served as energy donors, and Cy3 labeled on the AFB1 aptamer was used as an acceptor. An energy donor-acceptor pair was fabricated in the NMOFs-Aptasensor. With AFB1 selectively caught by the AFB1 aptamer, the fluorescence of the NMOFs-Aptasensor changed via fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET), and the fluorescence spectra changed accordingly. The ratiometric fluorescence signal was utilized to quantitatively measure AFB1. The reported NMOFs-Aptasensor presented great detection performance from 0 to 3.33 ng mL^-1, with an LOD of 0.08 ng mL^-1. Moreover, the fluorescence sensor was successfully applied to detect AFB1 in real samples.

Switchable Ion Current Saturation Regimes Enabled via Heterostructured Nanofluidic Devices Based on Metal-Organic Frameworks

The use of track-etched membranes allows further fine-tuning of transport regimes and thus enables their use in (bio)sensing and energy-harvesting applications, among others. Recently, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been combined with such membranes to further increase their potential. Herein, the creation of a single track-etched nanochannel modified with the UiO-66 MOF is proposed. By the interfacial growth method, UiO-66-confined synthesis fills the nanochannel completely and smoothly, yet its constructional porosity renders a heterostructure along the axial coordinate of the channel. The MOF heterostructure confers notorious changes in the transport regime of the nanofluidic device. In particular, the tortuosity provided by the micro- and mesostructure of UiO-66 added to its charged state leads to iontronic outputs characterized by an asymmetric ion current saturation for transmembrane voltages exceeding 0.3 V. Remarkably, this behavior can be easily and reversibly modulated by changing the pH of the media and it can also be maintained for a wide range of KCl concentrations. In addition, it is found that the modified-nanochannel functionality cannot be explained by considering just the intrinsic microporosity of UiO-66, but rather the constructional porosity that arises during the MOF growth process plays a central and dominant role.

Recent Developments and Perspectives of Recycled Poly(ethylene terephthalate)-Based Membranes: A Review

Post-consumer poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) waste disposal is an important task of modern industry, and the development of new PET-based value added products and methods for their production is one of the ways to solve it. Membranes for various purposes, in this regard are such products. The aim of the review, on the one hand, is to systematize the known methods of processing PET and copolyesters, highlighting their advantages and disadvantages and, on the other hand, to show what valuable membrane products could be obtained, and in what areas of the economy they can be used. Among the various approaches to the processing of PET waste, we single out chemical methods as having the greatest promise. They are divided into two large categories: (1) aimed at obtaining polyethylene terephthalate, similar in properties to the primary one, and (2) aimed at obtaining copolyesters. It is shown that among the former, glycolysis has the greatest potential, and among the latter, destruction followed by copolycondensation and interchain exchange with other polyesters, have the greatest prospects. Next, the key technologies for obtaining membranes, based on polyethylene terephthalate and copolyesters are considered: (1) ion track technology, (2) electrospinning, and (3) non-solvent induced phase separation. The methods for the additional modification of membranes to impart hydrophobicity, hydrophilicity, selective transmission of various substances, and other properties are also given. In each case, examples of the use are considered, including gas purification, water filtration, medical and food industry use, analytical and others. Promising directions for further research are highlighted, both in obtaining recycled PET-based materials, and in post-processing and modification methods.

Fabrication of Redox-Controllable Bioinspired Nanochannels for Precisely Regulating Protein Transport

Redox regulation is an inherent feature of nature and plays a crucial role in the transport of ions/small molecules. However, whether redox status affects the biomolecule transport remains largely unknown. To explore the effects of redox status on biomolecule transport, herein, we constructed a glutathione/glutathione disulfide (GSH/GSSG)-driven and pillar[5]arene (P5)-modified artificial nanochannel for protein transport. The results indicate that hemoglobin (Hb) protein is selectively and effectively transported across the GSH-driven P5-modified nanochannel, which suggests that the redox status of the nanochannel could affect the process of protein transport. Therefore, this redox-driven nanochannel could provide a potential application for biomolecule detection and redox-controllable biomolecular drug release.

Recent Progress of SAPO-34 Zeolite Membranes for CO2 Separation: A Review

In the zeolite family, the silicoaluminophosphate (SAPO)-34 zeolite has a unique chemical structure, distinctive pore size, adsorption characteristics, as well as chemical and thermal stability, and recently, has attracted much research attention. Increasing global carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions pose a serious environmental threat to humans, animals, plants, and the entire environment. This mini-review summarizes the role of SAPO-34 zeolite membranes, including mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) and pure SAPO-34 membranes in CO₂ separation. Specifically, this paper summarizes significant developments in SAPO-34 membranes for CO₂ removal from air and natural gas. Consideration is given to a variety of successes in SAPO-34 membranes, and future ideas are described in detail to foresee how SAPO-34 could be employed to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. We hope that this study will serve as a detailed guide to the use of SAPO-34 membranes in industrial CO₂ separation.

A Review on SAPO-34 Zeolite Materials for CO2 Capture and Conversion

Among several known zeolites, silicoaluminophosphate (SAPO)-34 zeolite exhibits a distinct chemical structure, unique pore size distribution, and chemical, thermal, and ion exchange capabilities, which have recently attracted considerable research attention. Global carbon dioxide (CO₂ ) emissions are a serious environmental issue. Current atmospheric CO₂ level exceeds 414 parts per million (ppm), which greatly influences humans, fauna, flora, and the ecosystem as a whole. Zeolites play a vital role in CO₂ removal, recycling, and utilization. This review summarizes the properties of the SAPO-34 zeolite and its role in CO₂ capture and separation from air and natural gas. In addition, due to their high thermal stability and catalytic nature, CO₂ conversions into valuable products over single metal, bi-metallic, and tri-metallic catalysts and their oxides supported on SAPO-34 were also summarized. Considering these accomplishments, substantial problems related to SAPO-34 are discussed, and future recommendations are offered in detail to predict how SAPO-34 could be employed for greenhouse gas mitigation.

Thermal Degradation Kinetics Analysis of Ethylene-Propylene Copolymer and EP-1-Hexene Terpolymer

LLDPE is a less crystalline polymer with vast industrial and domestic applications. It is imperative to understand the synthesis, processing conditions, and thermal degradation mechanism of the co- as well as terpolymers. This paper reports the in-situ synthesis and thermal degradation studies of the ethylene-propylene copolymer and ethylene-propylene-1-hexene terpolymer and its nanocomposite with ZnAL LDH sheets. The 1-hexene dosing during the in-situ process influenced the product yield and immensely affected the thermal stability of the resultant polymer. One milliliter 1-hexene in-situ addition increased the product yield by 170 percent, while the temperature at 10 percent weight loss in TGA was dropped by about 60 °C. While only 0.3 weight percent ZnAL LDH addition in the terpolymer improved the thermal stability by 10 °C. A master plot technique and combined kinetics analysis (CKA) were deployed to access the thermal degradation mechanism of the synthesized polymers.

Preparation of Sulfur-doped Carbon for Supercapacitor Applications: A Review

Electrochemical capacitors, also known as supercapacitors (SCs), have lately played an important role in energy storage and conversion systems due to their specific characteristics such as high strength, durability, and environmental friendliness. A wide range of materials is used as electrodes for SC applications because the electrochemical efficiency is primarily determined by the electrode materials used. Carbonaceous materials with unique surface, chemical, electrochemical, and electronic characteristics have become attractive for energy storage research, but they cannot meet the rising need for high specific energy and specific power. Besides, heteroatom-doped carbon materials have shown pseudocapacitance characteristics and improved specific energy, specific power, and conductivity. This makes them more adaptable in SC application. Among different heteroatom doping of carbon, S-doped carbon has gained considerable attention in SC applications due to its unpaired electrons and easily polarizable nature. S-doped carbon materials-based SCs have demonstrated enhanced surface wettability, improved conductivity, and induced pseudocapacitance effect, thereby delivering improved specific energy and specific power. Many reports on S-doped carbon for SC applications have been published, but there is no specific Review on the preparation of S-doped carbon for SC applications. This Review focuses on recent developments in the field of SC electrodes made from S-doped carbon materials. Herein, the preparation methods and applications of S-doped carbon for SCs were summarized following a brief discussion of different electrochemical characterization techniques of SCs. Finally, the challenges of S-doped carbon materials and their potential prospects were discussed to give crucial insights into the favorable factors for future innovations of SC electrodes. This Review aims to provide insight for further research on the preparation of S-doped carbon for electrochemical energy storage applications.

A Review of Preparation Methods for Heterogeneous Catalysts

Catalysts contribute significantly to the industrial revolution in terms of reaction rates and reduction in production costs. Extensive research has been documented on various industrial catalysis in the last few decades. The performance of catalysts is influenced by many parameters, including synthesis methods. The current work overviews the most common methods applied for the synthesis of supported catalysts. This review presents the detailed background, principles, and mechanism of each preparation method. The advantages and limitations of each method have also been elaborated in detail. In addition, the applications of each method in terms of catalyst synthesis have been documented in the present review paper.

Bio-inspired Track-Etched Polymeric Nanochannels: Steady-State Biosensors for Detection of Analytes

Bio-inspired polymeric nanochannel (also referred as nanopore)-based biosensors have attracted considerable attention on account of their controllable channel size and shape, multi-functional surface chemistry, unique ionic transport properties, and good robustness for applications. There are already very informative reviews on the latest developments in solid-state artificial nanochannel-based biosensors, however, which concentrated on the resistive-pulse sensing-based sensors for practical applications. The steady-state sensing-based nanochannel biosensors, in principle, have significant advantages over their counterparts in term of high sensitivity, fast response, target analytes with no size limit, and extensive suitable range. Furthermore, among the diverse materials, nanochannels based on polymeric materials perform outstandingly, due to flexible fabrication and wide application. This compressive Review summarizes the recent advances in bio-inspired polymeric nanochannels as sensing platforms for detection of important analytes in living organisms, to meet the high demand for high-performance biosensors for analysis of target analytes, and the potential for development of smart sensing devices. In the future, research efforts can be focused on transport mechanisms in the field of steady-state or resistive-pulse nanochannel-based sensors and on developing precisely size-controlled, robust, miniature and reusable, multi-functional, and high-throughput biosensors for practical applications. Future efforts should aim at a deeper understanding of the principles at the molecular level and incorporating these diverse pore architectures into homogeneous and defect-free multi-channel membrane systems. With the rapid advancement of nanoscience and biotechnology, we believe that many more achievements in nanochannel-based biosensors could be achieved in the near future, serving people in a better way.

A Review of Supercapacitors: Materials Design, Modification, and Applications

Supercapacitors (SCs) have received much interest due to their enhanced electrochemical performance, superior cycling life, excellent specific power, and fast charging–discharging rate. The energy density of SCs is comparable to batteries; however, their power density and cyclability are higher by several orders of magnitude relative to batteries, making them a flexible and compromising energy storage alternative, provided a proper design and efficient materials are used. This review emphasizes various types of SCs, such as electrochemical double-layer capacitors, hybrid supercapacitors, and pseudo-supercapacitors. Furthermore, various synthesis strategies, including sol-gel, electro-polymerization, hydrothermal, co-precipitation, chemical vapor deposition, direct coating, vacuum filtration, de-alloying, microwave auxiliary, in situ polymerization, electro-spinning, silar, carbonization, dipping, and drying methods, are discussed. Furthermore, various functionalizations of SC electrode materials are summarized. In addition to their potential applications, brief insights into the recent advances and associated problems are provided, along with conclusions. This review is a noteworthy addition because of its simplicity and conciseness with regard to SCs, which can be helpful for researchers who are not directly involved in electrochemical energy storage.

Advanced strategies in Metal-Organic Frameworks for CO2 Capture and Separation

The continuous carbon dioxide (CO₂ ) gas emissions associated with fossil fuel production, valorization, and utilization are serious challenges to the global environment. Therefore, several developments of CO₂ capture, separation, transportation, storage, and valorization have been explored. Consequently, we documented a comprehensive review of the most advanced strategies adopted in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for CO₂ capture and separation. The enhancements in CO₂ capture and separation are generally achieved due to the chemistry of MOFs by controlling pore window, pore size, open-metal sites, acidity, chemical doping, post or pre-synthetic modifications. The chemistry of defects engineering, breathing in MOFs, functionalization in MOFs, hydrophobicity, and topology are the salient advanced strategies, recently reported in MOFs for CO₂ capture and separation. Therefore, this review summarizes MOF materials' advancement explaining different strategies and their role in the CO₂ mitigations. The study also provided useful insights into key areas for further investigations.

ZIF-95 as a filler for enhanced gas separation performance of polysulfone membrane

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are found to be promising porous crystalline materials for application in gas separation. Considering that mixed matrix membranes usually increase the gas separation performance of a polymer by increasing selectivity, permeability, or both (i.e., perm-selectivity), the zeolitic imidazole framework-95 (ZIF-95) MOF was dispersed for the first time in polysulfone (PSF) polymer to form mixed matrix membranes (MMMs), namely, ZIF-95/PSF. The fabricated ZIF-95/PSF membranes were examined for the separation of various gases. The characterization of solvothermally synthesized ZIF-95 was carried out using different analyses such as powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), porosity measurements, etc. ZIF-95 was mixed with PSF at 8%, 16%, 24%, and 32% weight percent to form different loading MMMs. SEM analysis of membranes revealed good compatibility/adhesion between the MOF and polymer. The permeability of He, H₂, O₂, CO₂, N₂, and CH₄ were measured for the pure and composite membranes. The ideal selectivity of different gas pairs were calculated and compared with reported mixed matrix membranes. The maximum increases in permeabilities were observed in 32% loaded membrane; nevertheless, these performance/permeability increases were at the expense of a slight decrease of selectivity. In the optimally loaded membrane (i.e., 24 wt% loaded membrane), the permeability of H₂, O₂, and CO₂ increased by 80.2%, 78.0%, and 67.2%, respectively, as compared to the pure membrane. Moreover, the selectivity of H₂/CH₄, O₂/N₂, and H₂/CO₂ gas pairs also increased by 16%, 15%, and 8% in the 24% loaded membrane, respectively.

Present Status and Future Prospects of Jute in Nanotechnology: A Review

Nanotechnology has transformed the world with its diverse applications, ranging from industrial developments to impacting our daily lives. It has multiple applications throughout financial sectors and enables the development of facilitating scientific endeavors with extensive commercial potentials. Nanomaterials, especially the ones which have shown biomedical and other health-related properties, have added new dimensions to the field of nanotechnology. Recently, the use of bioresources in nanotechnology has gained significant attention from the scientific community due to its 100 % eco-friendly features, availability, and low costs. In this context, jute offers a considerable potential. Globally, its plant produces the second most common natural cellulose fibers and a large amount of jute sticks as a byproduct. The main chemical compositions of jute fibers and sticks, which have a trace amount of ash content, are cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin. This makes jute as an ideal source of pure nanocellulose, nano-lignin, and nanocarbon preparation. It has also been used as a source in the evolution of nanomaterials used in various applications. In addition, hemicellulose and lignin, which are extractable from jute fibers and sticks, could be utilized as a reductant/stabilizer for preparing other nanomaterials. This review highlights the status and prospects of jute in nanotechnology. Different research areas in which jute can be applied, such as in nanocellulose preparation, as scaffolds for other nanomaterials, catalysis, carbon preparation, life sciences, coatings, polymers, energy storage, drug delivery, fertilizer delivery, electrochemistry, reductant, and stabilizer for synthesizing other nanomaterials, petroleum industry, paper industry, polymeric nanocomposites, sensors, coatings, and electronics, have been summarized in detail. We hope that these prospects will serve as a precursor of jute-based nanotechnology research in the future.

Organic molecular sieve membranes for chemical separations

Molecular separations that enable selective transport of target molecules from gas and liquid molecular mixtures, such as CO2 capture, olefin/paraffin separations, and organic solvent nanofiltration, represent the most energy sensitive and significant demands. Membranes are favored for molecular separations owing to the advantages of energy efficiency, simplicity, scalability, and small environmental footprint. A number of emerging microporous organic materials have displayed great potential as building blocks of molecular separation membranes, which not only integrate the rigid, engineered pore structures and desirable stability of inorganic molecular sieve membranes, but also exhibit a high degree of freedom to create chemically rich combinations/sequences. To gain a deep insight into the intrinsic connections and characteristics of these microporous organic material-based membranes, in this review, for the first time, we propose the concept of organic molecular sieve membranes (OMSMs) with a focus on the precise construction of membrane structures and efficient intensification of membrane processes. The platform chemistries, designing principles, and assembly methods for the precise construction of OMSMs are elaborated. Conventional mass transport mechanisms are analyzed based on the interactions between OMSMs and penetrate(s). Particularly, the 'STEM' guidelines of OMSMs are highlighted to guide the precise construction of OMSM structures and efficient intensification of OMSM processes. Emerging mass transport mechanisms are elucidated inspired by the phenomena and principles of the mass transport processes in the biological realm. The representative applications of OMSMs in gas and liquid molecular mixture separations are highlighted. The major challenges and brief perspectives for the fundamental science and practical applications of OMSMs are tentatively identified.

Bismuth-Graphene Nanohybrids: Synthesis, Reaction Mechanisms, and Photocatalytic Applications—A Review

Photocatalysis is a classical solution to energy conversion and environmental pollution control problems. In photocatalysis, the development and exploration of new visible light catalysts and their synthesis and modification strategies are crucial. It is also essential to understand the mechanism of these reactions in the various reaction media. Recently, bismuth and graphene’s unique geometrical and electronic properties have attracted considerable attention in photocatalysis. This review summarizes bismuth-graphene nanohybrids’ synthetic processes with various design considerations, fundamental mechanisms of action, heterogeneous photocatalysis, benefits, and challenges. Some key applications in energy conversion and environmental pollution control are discussed, such as CO2 reduction, water splitting, pollutant degradation, disinfection, and organic transformations. The detailed perspective of bismuth-graphene nanohybrids’ applications in various research fields presented herein should be of equal interest to academic and industrial scientists.

Structural Characteristics and Environmental Applications of Covalent Organic Frameworks

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are emerging crystalline polymeric materials with highly ordered intrinsic and uniform pores. Their synthesis involves reticular chemistry, which offers the freedom of choosing building precursors from a large bank with distinct geometries and functionalities. The pore sizes of COFs, as well as their geometry and functionalities, can be pre-designed, giving them an immense opportunity in various fields. In this mini-review, we will focus on the use of COFs in the removal of environmentally hazardous metal ions and chemicals through adsorption and separation. The review will introduce basic aspects of COFs and their advantages over other purification materials. Various fabrication strategies of COFs will be introduced in relation to the separation field. Finally, the challenges of COFs and their future perspectives in this field will be briefly outlined.

Novel Strategy for Engineering the Metal-Oxide@MOF Core@Shell Architecture and Its Applications in Cataluminescence Sensing

Cataluminescence is an attractive oxydic luminescence on the gas-solid interface, and metal-oxide@MOF core@shell architectures show great potential for cataluminescence sensing due to their integrated synergistic effect from core and shell components. However, restricting the direct nucleation and growth of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) on the topologically distinct surface of metal oxides is a great challenge, owing to the high interface energy from the topology mismatch. Herein, for the first time, a novel liquid-phase concentration-controlled nucleation strategy is exploited to induce the direct assembly of a ZIF-8 layer on the surface of CeO₂ nanospheres without any sacrificial templates or further surface modifications. The results show that the construction of the CeO₂@ZIF-8 core@shell architecture can be accomplished within 1 min under the mediation of boosted nucleation kinetics. Furthermore, the universality of this developed strategy is demonstrated by the encapsulation of other metal-oxide cores such as magnetic Fe₃O₄ and ZnCo₂O₄ core particles with a ZIF-8 shell. Notably, compared to the pure CeO₂ and ZIF-8, the obtained CeO₂@ZIF-8 nanocomposite exhibits enhanced analytical performance for the cataluminescence sensing of propanal, in which the shell acts as the major catalytic reaction center, while the core contributes to further improving the catalytic efficiency. The proposed facile synthesis strategy with excellent simplicity, rapidity, and universality brings new insights into the engineering of core@shell advanced functional materials with mismatched topologies for catering to the diverse application demands.
