Application of metal-organic frameworks and their derivates for thermal-catalytic C1 molecules conversion

One-carbon (C1) catalysis refers to the conversion of compounds with a single carbon atom, especially carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), and methane (CH4), into clean fuels and valuable chemicals via catalytic strategy is crucial for sustainable and green development. Among various catalytic strategies, thermal-driven process seems to be one of the most promising pathways for C1 catalysis due to the high efficiency and practical application prospect. Notably, the rational design of thermal-driven C1 catalysts plays a vital role in boosting the targeted products synthesis of C1 catalysis, which relies heavily on the choice of ideal active site support, catalyst fabrication precursor, and catalytic reaction field. As a novel crystalline porous material, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has made significant progress in the design and synthesis of various functional nanomaterials. However, the application of MOFs in C1 catalysis faces numerous challenges, such as thermal stability, mechanical strength, yield of MOFs, and so on. To overcome these limitations and harness the advantages of MOFs in thermal-driven C1 catalysis, researchers have developed various catalyst/carrier preparation strategies. In this review, we provide a concise overview of the recent advancements in the conversion of CO, CO2, and CH4 into clean fuels and valuable chemicals via thermal-catalytic strategy using MOFs-based catalysts. Furthermore, we discuss the main challenges and opportunities associated with MOFs-based catalysts for thermal-driven C1 catalysis in the future.

Fe Nanoparticle Size Control of the Fe-MOF-Derived Catalyst Using a Solvothermal Method: Effect on FTS Activity and Olefin Production

The design of a highly active Fe-supported catalyst with the optimum particle and pore size, dispersion, loading, and stability is essential for obtaining the desired product selectivity. This study employed a solvothermal method to prepare two Fe-MIL-88B metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived catalysts using triethylamine (TEA) or NaOH as deprotonation catalysts. The catalysts were analyzed using X-ray diffraction, N₂-physisorption, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, H₂ temperature-programed reduction, and thermogravimetric analysis and were evaluated for the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis performance. It was evident that the catalyst preparation in the presence of TEA produces a higher MOF yield and smaller crystal size than those produced using NaOH. The pyrolysis of MOFs yielded catalysts with different Fe particle sizes of 6 and 35 nm for the preparation in the presence of TEA and NaOH, respectively. Also, both types of catalysts exhibited a high Fe loading (50%) and good stability after 100 h reaction time. The smaller particle size TEA catalyst showed higher activity and higher olefin yield, with 94% CO conversion and a higher olefin yield of 24% at a lower reaction temperature of 280 °C and 20 bar at H₂/CO = 1. Moreover, the smaller particle size TEA catalyst exhibited higher Fe time yield and CH₄ selectivity but with lower chain growth probability (α) and C₅₊ selectivity.

Reversible Photo-, Thermal-, and pH-Responsive Functionalized Wood with Fluorescence Emission

A reversible photo-, thermal-, and pH-responsive high-performance functional wood with fluorescence has been prepared. The properties, structure, multi-response, fluorescence, water resistance, and corrosion resistance of original wood (ORW) and functional wood (FUW) were investigated with an X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) spectrometer, a Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometer, a N₂ adsorption–desorption analyzer, an atomic force microscope (AFM), tensile tests, a scanning electron microscope (SEM), an ultraviolet–visible (UV–Vis) spectrophotometer, a fluorescence spectrometer, the equilibrium swelling ratio (ESR), and corrosion tests. The results of XPS, FTIR, N₂ adsorption–desorption, and AFM exhibited that FUW was successfully prepared. Additionally, the results of the tensile test and SEM revealed that FUW had better mechanical properties than ORW, due to the filling of epoxy resin in the pores of the wood. Moreover, the UV–Vis and fluorescence spectra demonstrated that the introduction of epoxy resin induced multi-response and fluorescence functions to FUW. Furthermore, the data of ESR and corrosion test showed that the introduction of epoxy resin greatly improved the water and corrosion resistance of wood. This study provides ideas and methods for preparing novel high-performance multi-response FUW.

Micro/macrostructure and multicomponent design of catalysts by MOF-derived strategy: Opportunities for the application of nanomaterials-based advanced oxidation processes in wastewater treatment

Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have demonstrated an effective wastewater treatment method. But the application of AOPs using nanomaterials as catalysts is challenged with a series of problems, including limited mass transfer, surface fouling, poor stability, and difficult recycling. Recently, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with high tunability and ultrahigh porosity are emerging as excellent precursors for the delicate design of the structure/composition of catalysts and many MOF-derived catalysts with distinct physicochemical characteristics have shown optimized performance in various AOPs. Herein, to elucidate the structure-composition-performance relationship, a review on the performance optimization of MOF-derived catalysts to overcome the existing problems in AOPs by micro/macrostructure and multicomponent design is given. Impressively, MOF-derived strategy for the design of catalyst materials from the aspects of microstructure, macrostructure, and multicomponent (polymetallic, heteroatom doping, M/C hybrids, etc.) is firstly presented. Moreover, important advances of MOF-derived catalysts in the application of various AOPs (Fenton, persulfate-based AOPs, photocatalysis, electrochemical processes, hybrid AOPs) are summarized. The relationship between the unique micro/macrostructure and/or multicomponent features and performance optimization in mass transfer, catalytic efficiency, stability, and recyclability is clarified. Furthermore, the challenges and future work directions for the practical application of MOF-derived catalysts in AOPs for wastewater treatment are provided.

Strong Foam-like Composites from Highly Mesoporous Wood and Metal-Organic Frameworks for Efficient CO2 Capture

Mechanical stability and multicycle durability are essential for emerging solid sorbents to maintain an efficient CO2 adsorption capacity and reduce cost. In this work, a strong foam-like composite is developed as a CO2 sorbent by the in situ growth of thermally stable and microporous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) in a mesoporous cellulose template derived from balsa wood, which is delignified by using sodium chlorite and further functionalized by 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO)-mediated oxidation. The surface carboxyl groups in the TEMPO-oxidized wood template (TO-wood) facilitate the coordination of the cellulose network with multivalent metal ions and thus enable the nucleation and in situ growth of MOFs including copper benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate [Cu3(BTC)2], zinc 2-methylimidazolate, and aluminum benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate. The TO-wood/Cu3(BTC)2 composite shows a high specific surface area of 471 m2 g-1 and a high CO2 adsorption capacity of 1.46 mmol g-1 at 25 °C and atmospheric pressure. It also demonstrates high durability during the temperature swing cyclic CO2 adsorption/desorption test. In addition, the TO-wood/Cu3(BTC)2 composite is lightweight but exceptionally strong with a specific elastic modulus of 3034 kN m kg-1 and a specific yield strength of 68 kN m kg-1 under the compression test. The strong and durable TO-wood/MOF composites can potentially be used as a solid sorbent for CO2 capture, and their application can possibly be extended to environmental remediation, gas separation and purification, insulation, and catalysis.
