Electrochemically Exfoliated Graphene for High-Durability Cement Composites

Relevance of Specific Surface of Mixed Oxide Derived from Layered Double Hydroxides on the Rheological Properties and Porosity of Cement Pastes

Cement-based products are the synthetic materials most used by humans, with consequent environmental impacts. One strategy that can assist in mitigating the adverse environmental effects of these materials involves the incorporation of multifunctional nanostructured additives. The objective of this work was to demonstrate the efficacy of incorporating mixed oxides (MO) derived from layered double hydroxides (LDH) to control the rheology and porosity of cement-based matrices. Thermal aging of LDH enabled the preparation of MO with different specific surface areas (SSA) for incorporation in different amounts in Portland cement. A low proportion of MO and low SSA increased workability by 22%. In contrast, a high proportion of MO and high SSA led to a 2.4-fold acceleration of cement consolidation and a 36.9% decrease of the porosity of the composite. These features could be attributed to additive-matrix interactions, with the LDH memory effect playing key roles in the cement crystal seed process and in competition for the absorption of free water within the cement paste. Therefore, the unprecedent results obtained suggest that the quantity and SSA of MO are key parameters to fine-tune the paste rheology and structure of hidrated cement. The MO materials showed easy adaptability and excellent potential for use as multifunctional additives in the production of eco-friendly, high-performance cement paste formulations with controllable properties according to the desired application.

Tailoring electrochemically exfoliated graphene electroactive pathways in cementitious composites for structural health monitoring of constructions

Manipulating and exerting a nanoscale control over the structure of multicomponent materials represents a powerful strategy for tailoring multifunctional composites for structural health monitoring applications. The use of self-sensing, electroactive cementitious composites in large-scale applications is severely hindered by the absence of clear directives and a thorough understanding of the electrical conduction mechanisms taking place within the cement matrix. Here we report on a nanoscale approach towards this goal which is accomplished via the development of a novel, multifunctional cementitious composite incorporating electrochemically exfoliated graphene (EEG). The use of commercially available poly(carboxylate ether)-based superplasticizer allowed us to embed in the cement mortar up to 0.8 wt% of EEG which is fully dispersed in the matrix. The multiscale investigation made it possible to assess the effect of such high dosages of EEG on the mechanical performance and hydration degree of cementitious composites. We used electrochemical impedance spectroscopy to monitor the formation of electroactive EEG-based percolation paths for charge transfer within cement mortar, the latter displaying resistivities of 2.67 kΩ cm as well as EEG-cement-EEG capacitive paths with capacitance of 2.20 × 10-10 F cm-1 for composites incorporating 0.6 wt% of EEG. Noteworthy, we have proposed here for the first time an electrical equivalent circuit for the impedance spectroscopy analysis of cementitious composites with high loadings of graphene, exceeding the percolation threshold. These findings underscore the potential of nanoscale structures for civil engineering applications and more specifically may open new avenues for the technological application of graphene-based cementitious composites in self-sensing structures.

Recent Progress of Cement-Based Materials Modified by Graphene and Its Derivatives

Graphene, with its excellent properties and unique structure, has been extensively studied in the context of modifiable cement-based materials. However, a systematic summary of the status of numerous experimental results and applications is lacking. Therefore, this paper reviews the graphene materials that improve the properties of cement-based materials, including workability, mechanical properties, and durability. The influence of graphene material properties, mass ratio, and curing time on the mechanical properties and durability of concrete is discussed. Furthermore, graphene's applications in improving interfacial adhesion, enhancing electrical and thermal conductivity of concrete, absorbing heavy metal ions, and collecting building energy are introduced. Finally, the existing issues in current study are analyzed, and the future development trends are foreseen.
