Optimized Eco-Friendly Foam Materials: A Study on the Effects of Sodium Alginate, Cellulose, and Activated Carbon

This study focuses on optimizing the physical and mechanical properties of foam materials produced with the addition of sodium alginate as the matrix, and cellulose and activated carbon as fillers. Foam materials, valued for their lightweight and insulation properties, are typically produced from synthetic polymers that pose environmental risks. To mitigate these concerns, this study investigates the potential of natural, biodegradable polymers. Various foam formulations were tested to evaluate their density, compression modulus, and thermal conductivity. The results indicated that an increase in activated carbon content enhanced thermal stability, as indicated by higher Ti% and Tmax% values. Additionally, a higher concentration of sodium alginate and activated carbon resulted in higher foam density and compressive modulus, while cellulose exhibited a more intricate role in the material's behavior. In the optimal formula, where the sum of the component percentages totals 7.6%, the percentages (e.g., 0.5% sodium alginate, 5% cellulose, and 2.1% activated carbon) are calculated based on the weight/volume (w/v) ratio of each component in the water used to prepare the foam mixture. These results indicate that natural and biodegradable polymers can be used to develop high-performance, eco-friendly foam materials.

Nanocellulose-based porous lightweight materials with flame retardant properties: A review

This review discusses the development and application of nanocellulose (NC)-aerogels, a sustainable and biodegradable biomaterial, with enhanced flame retardant (FR) properties. NC-aerogels combine the excellent physical and mechanical properties of NC with the low density and thermal conductivity of aerogels, making them promising for thermal insulation and other fields. However, the flammability of NC-aerogels limits their use in some applications, such as electromagnetic interference shielding, oil/water separation, and flame-resistant textiles. The review covers the design, fabrication, modification, and working mechanism of NC porous materials, focusing on how advanced technologies can impart FR properties into them. The review also evaluates the FR performance of NC-aerogels by employing widely recognized tests, such as the limited oxygen index, cone calorimeter, and UL-94. The review also explores the integration of innovative and eco-friendly materials, such as MXene, metal-organic frameworks, dopamine, lignin, and alginate, into NC-aerogels, to improve their FR performance and functionality. The review concludes by outlining the potential, challenges, and limitations of future research on FR NC-aerogels, identifying the obstacles and potential solutions, and understanding the current progress and gaps in the field.

Hierarchical Incorporation of Reduced Graphene Oxide into Anisotropic Cellulose Nanofiber Foams Improves Their Thermal Insulation

Anisotropic cellulose nanofiber (CNF) foams represent the state-of-the-art in renewable insulation. These foams consist of large (diameter >10 μm) uniaxially aligned macropores with mesoporous pore-walls and aligned CNF. The foams show anisotropic thermal conduction, where heat transports more efficiently in the axial direction (along the aligned CNF and macropores) than in the radial direction (perpendicular to the aligned CNF and macropores). Here we explore the impact on axial and radial thermal conductivity upon depositing a thin film of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) on the macropore walls in anisotropic CNF foams. To obtain rGO films on the foam walls we developed liquid-phase self-assembly to deposit rGO in a layer-by-layer fashion. Using electron and ion microscopy, we thoroughly characterized the resulting rGO-CNF foams and confirmed the successful deposition of rGO. These hierarchical rGO-CNF foams show lower radial thermal conductivity (λr) across a wide range of relative humidity compared to CNF control foams. Our work therefore demonstrates a potential method for improved thermal insulation in anisotropic CNF foams and introduces versatile self-assembly for postmodification of such foams.

Anisotropic composite aerogel with thermal insulation and flame retardancy from cellulose nanofibers, calcium alginate and boric acid

With the increasing severity of energy shortages and environmental pollution, there is an urgent need for advanced thermal insulation materials with excellent comprehensive performance, including low thermal conductivity, high flame resistance, and strong compressive strength. Herein, an anisotropic composite aerogel based on cellulose nanofibers (CNF), calcium alginate (CA), and boric acid (BA) is fabricated using a directional freeze-drying strategy. The CA and BA, as double cross-linking agents, associated with oriented porous structure provide the resultant aerogel with good mechanical strength. Additionally, self-flame retardant CA and BA act as synergistic flame retardants that endow the aerogel with excellent flame retardance properties such as a limiting oxygen index value of 44.2 %, UL-94 V-0 rating, and low heat release. Furthermore, this composite aerogel exhibits outstanding thermal insulation performance with a low thermal conductivity of approximately 30 mW m-1 K-1. Therefore, the composite aerogel is expected to have a wide potential application in areas such as construction, automotive industry, batteries, petrochemical pipelines, and high-temperature reaction devices.

Harnessing the Flexibility of Lightweight Cellulose Nanofiber Composite Aerogels for Superior Thermal Insulation and Fire Protection

Thermally insulating materials from renewable and readily available resources are in high demand for ecologically beneficial applications. Cellulose aerogels made from lignocellulosic waste have various advantages. However, they are fragile and breakable when bent or compressed. In addition, cellulose aerogels are flammable and weather-sensitive. Hence, to overcome these problems, this work included the preparation of polyurethane (PU)-based cellulose nanofiber (CNF) aerogels that had flexibility, flame retardancy, and thermal insulation. Methyl trimethoxysilane (MTMS) and water-soluble ammonium polyphosphate (APP) were added to improve the cross-linking, hydrophobicity, and flame-retardant properties of aerogels. The flexibility of chemically cross-linked CNF aerogels is enhanced through the incorporation of polyurethane via the wet coagulating process. The aerogels obtained during this study have exhibited low weight (density: 35.3-91.96 kg/m3) together with enhanced hydrophobic properties, flame retardancy, and decreased thermal conductivity (26.7-36.7 mW/m K at 25 °C). Additionally, the flame-retardant properties were comprehensively examined and the underlying mechanism was deduced. The aerogels prepared in this study are considered unique in the nanocellulose aerogel category due to their integrated structural and performance benefits. The invention is considered to substantially contribute to the large-scale manufacture and use of insulation in construction, automobiles, and aerospace.

Removal of heavy metals from wastewater by aerogel derived from date palm waste

Cellulose that has been sourced from date palm leaves as a primary component was utilised. This cellulose served as the foundational material for the development of an aerogel composite. During this process, MXene (Ti3C2Tx) played a pivotal role in enhancing the overall composition of the aerogel. To ensure the stability and durability of the resulting aerogel structure, calcium ions were introduced to the mix. These ions facilitated the cross-linking process of sodium alginate molecules, ultimately leading to the formation of calcium alginate. This cross-linking step is crucial for the enhanced mechanical and chemical stability of the aerogel. Incorporating alginate and Ti3C2Tx into the cellulose aerogel enhanced its structural integrity in aqueous conditions and increased its adsorption capacity. When evaluated with synthetic wastewater, this composite exhibited remarkable adsorption capacities of 72.9, 114.4, 92.9, and 123.9 mg/g for As, Cd, Ni, and Zn ions, respectively. A systematic study was carried out to see the effect of various parameters, including contact time, MXene concentration, pH, and temperature on the adsorption of these elements. Peak adsorption was achieved at 60 min, favoring a pH range between 6 and 8 and exhibited optimal sorption efficiency at lower temperatures. The adsorption kinetics adhered closely to a pseudo-second-order, while the Freundlich model adeptly described the adsorption isotherms. An interesting result of this research was the aerogel's regenerative potential. After undergoing a basic acid treatment, the MXene/cellulose/alginate aerogel composite could be restored and reused for up to three cycles, all while maintaining its core performance capabilities even after the rigorous cross-linking processes. In three consecutive cycles, the removal percentages for As, Cd, Ni, and Zn were 48.15%, 80.38%, 56.51%, and 86.12% in cycle 1; 37.35%, 65.63%, 45.97%, and 78.42% in cycle 2; and 28.60%, 56.22%, 34.70%, and 65.83% in cycle 3, respectively. The composite was tested in conditions resembling seawater salinity. Impressively, the aerogel continued to demonstrate a significant ability to adsorb metals, reinforcing its potential utility in real-world aquatic scenarios. These findings suggest that the composite aerogel, integrating MXene, cellulose, and alginate, is an effective medium for the targeted removal of heavy metals from aquatic environments.

Low-temperature superelastic, anisotropic, silane-crosslinked sodium alginate aerogel for thermal insulation

Bio-aerogels have attracted much attention owing to their remarkable properties, but their brittle and poor elasticity has limited their further applications. Here, we propose a strategy of in-situ silanization crosslinking combined with unidirectional freeze casting (SUFC) to prepare superelastic sodium alginate (SA) aerogels. The resulting aerogel was ultra-light (0.048 g/cm3), high porosity (96.86 %), and self-extinguishing from fire. Aerogels exhibited anisotropic properties, such as low-temperature elasticity (500 g compression at -70 °C 10-cycle, 99.6 % recovery), exceptional fatigue resistance (100-cycle at 50 % strain), and excellent thermal insulation (0.0696 W·m-1·K-1). Thus, the SUFC strategy provides considerable freedom for constructing multi-material, lamellar/honeycomb structured alginate-based aerogels, which pave the way to thermal insulation development at low temperatures.

Devisable pore structures and tunable thermal management properties of aerogels composed of carbon nanotubes and cellulose nanofibers with various aspect ratios

The anisotropic cellulose nanofiber (CNF)/carbon nanotube (CNT) aerogels hold a great promise in directional applications due to their distinct xylem-like aligned penetrating pore structures. The aspect ratio of CNF plays a crucial role in the pore structures of aerogels, directly dominating the final macroscopic properties of materials. Herein, three types of CNF with different aspect ratios were extracted through the 2,2,6,6-tetrmethylpiperidine-1-oxyl radical (TEMPO) oxidation process by changing the doses of oxidant. The corresponding anisotropic CNF/CNT aerogels were prepared by the unidirectional freeze-drying method and then their pore morphologies and properties were investigated in detail. The resulting aerogel with the shortest aspect ratio of CNF exhibited the densest porous structure, thereby obtaining the highest compressive strength of 110 kPa and elastic modulus of 383 kPa, while that containing the longest CNF possessed the highest thermal conductivity coefficient of 0.17 W m-1 K-1 and the worst thermal insulation. This research explored the relationship between the properties of the CNF/CNT aerogels and devisable pore structures caused by various aspect ratios of CNF, thus providing a new insight into the development of CNF/CNT aerogels with tunable performances.

Organic and Biogenic Nanocarriers as Bio-Friendly Systems for Bioactive Compounds' Delivery: State-of-the Art and Challenges

"Green" strategies to build up novel organic nanocarriers with bioperformance are modern trends in nanotechnology. In this way, the valorization of bio-wastes and the use of living systems to develop multifunctional organic and biogenic nanocarriers (OBNs) have revolutionized the nanotechnological and biomedical fields. This paper is a comprehensive review related to OBNs for bioactives' delivery, providing an overview of the reports on the past two decades. In the first part, several classes of bioactive compounds and their therapeutic role are briefly presented. A broad section is dedicated to the main categories of organic and biogenic nanocarriers. The major challenges regarding the eco-design and the fate of OBNs are suggested to overcome some toxicity-related drawbacks. Future directions and opportunities, and finding "green" solutions for solving the problems related to nanocarriers, are outlined in the final of this paper. We believe that through this review, we will capture the attention of the readers and will open new perspectives for new solutions/ideas for the discovery of more efficient and "green" ways in developing novel bioperformant nanocarriers for transporting bioactive agents.

Emerging Trends in Nanotechnology: Aerogel-Based Materials for Biomedical Applications

At present, aerogel is one of the most interesting materials globally. The network of aerogel consists of pores with nanometer widths, which leads to a variety of functional properties and broad applications. Aerogel is categorized as inorganic, organic, carbon, and biopolymers, and can be modified by the addition of advanced materials and nanofillers. Herein, this review critically discusses the basic preparation of aerogel from the sol-gel reaction with derivation and modification of a standard method to produce various aerogels for diverse functionalities. In addition, the biocompatibility of various types of aerogels were elaborated. Then, biomedical applications of aerogel were focused on this review as a drug delivery carrier, wound healing agent, antioxidant, anti-toxicity, bone regenerative, cartilage tissue activities and in dental fields. The clinical status of aerogel in the biomedical sector is shown to be similarly far from adequate. Moreover, due to their remarkable properties, aerogels are found to be preferably used as tissue scaffolds and drug delivery systems. The advanced studies in areas including self-healing, additive manufacturing (AM) technology, toxicity, and fluorescent-based aerogel are crucially important and are further addressed.

Superinsulating nanocellulose aerogels: Effect of density and nanofiber alignment

Cellulose aerogels are potential alternatives to silica aerogels with advantages in cost, sustainability and mechanical properties. However, the density dependence of thermal conductivity (λ) for cellulose aerogels remains controversial. Cellulose aerogels were produced by gas-phase pH induced gelation of TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibers (CNF) and supercritical drying. Their properties are evaluated by varying the CNF concentration (5-33 mg·cm^-3) and by uniaxial compression (9-115 mg·cm^-3). The aerogels are transparent with specific surface areas of ~400 m²·g^-1, mesopore volumes of ~2 cm³·g^-1 and a power-law dependence of the E-modulus (α ~ 1.53, and the highest reported E of ~1 MPa). The dataset confirms that λ displays a traditional U-shaped density dependence with a minimum of 18 mW·m^-1·K^-1 at 0.065 g·cm^-3. For a given density, λ is ~5 mW·m^-1·K^-1 lower for compressed aerogels due to the alignment of nanofibers, confirmed by small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS).

Contributions of Women in Recent Research on Biopolymer Science

Nowadays, biopolymers are playing a fundamental role in our society because of the environmental issues and concerns associated with synthetic polymers. The aim of this Special Issue entitled ‘Women in Polymer Science and Technology: Biopolymers’ is highlighting the work designed and developed by women on biopolymer science and technology. In this context, this short review aims to provide an introduction to this Special Issue by highlighting some recent contributions of women around the world on the particular topic of biopolymer science and technology during the last 20 years. In the first place, it highlights a selection of important works performed on a number of well-studied natural polymers, namely, agar, chitin, chitosan, cellulose, and collagen. Secondly, it gives an insight into the discovery of new polysaccharides and enzymes that have a role in their synthesis and in their degradation. These contributions will be paving the way for the next generation of female and male scientists on this topic.
