Abstract
A simple route was applied to obtain Bi nanodiscs embedded into tannic acid (TA) derived carbon (Bi@TAC) by calcining Bi2O3@TA precursors. As a result, the Bi@TAC electrode showed an impressive rate capability (a current density ranging from 0.2 to 10 A g-1 with 95% capacity retention) and a long-term cycling performance (414.8 mA h g-1 after 10 000 cycles at 5 A g-1).

Abstract
Battery-type faradaic materials are considered a class of promising electrodes for capacitive deionization (CDI) due to their superior ability to store ions through redox reactions. However, the desalination potential of such electrode materials has not been fully explored subject to the accessibility, conductivity, stability, etc. Herein, embedded battery material Ag nanoparticles is designed in capsule-structural units composed of graphene and constructed freestanding composite electrodes for CDI. Particularly, these Ag nanoparticles confined in interconnected graphene capsules can be both efficiently accessed by the electrolyte and rationally protected by the capsule networks, significantly unlocking their potential as desalination materials. Impressively, the optimized Ag-involved anodes can achieve an ultrahigh NaCl desalination capacity of ≈360 mg g-1 (≈218 mg g-1 for Cl-) at 1.4 V and exhibit good cycling stability. Moreover, the as-designed anodes also have very competitive desalination capacities for other anions, such as SO2- 4 (≈90 mg g-1) and CrO2- 4 (≈77 mg g-1), suggesting the broad applicability of such Ag-involved electrodes. This work shows that the ingenious introduction of space-confined structures is an effective means of unlocking the desalination potential of Ag-based materials, opening up alternative avenues for the development of other high-performance battery-type desalination electrodes.

Interlayer Structure Manipulation of FeOCl/MXene with Soft/Hard Interface Design for Safe Water Production Using Dechlorination Battery Deionization. Angew Chem Int Ed Engl 2024; 63:e202401972. Abstract
Suffering from the susceptibility to decomposition, the potential electrochemical application of FeOCl has greatly been hindered. The rational design of the soft-hard material interface can effectively address the challenge of stress concentration and thus decomposition that may occur in the electrodes during charging and discharging. Herein, interlayer structure manipulation of FeOCl/MXene using soft-hard interface design method were conducted for electrochemical dechlorination. FeOCl was encapsulated in Ti3C2Tx MXene nanosheets by electrostatic self-assembly layer by layer to form a soft-hard mechanical hierarchical structure, in which Ti3C2Tx was used as flexible buffer layers to relieve the huge volume change of FeOCl during Cl- intercalation/deintercalation and constructed a conductive network for fast charge transfer. The CDI dechlorination system of FeOCl/Ti3C2Tx delivered outstanding Cl- adsorption capacity (158.47 ± 6.98 mg g-1), rate (6.07 ± 0.35 mg g-1 min-1), and stability (over 94.49 % in 30 cycles), and achieved considerable energy recovery (21.14 ± 0.25 %). The superior dechlorination performance was proved to originate from the Fe2+/Fe3+ topochemical transformation and the deformation constraint effect of Ti3C2Tx on FeOCl. Our interfacial design strategy enables a hard-to-soft integration capacity, which can serve as a universal technology for solving the traditional problem of electrode volume expansion.

Abstract
Silver (Ag) is deemed a promising anode material for capacitive deionization (CDI) due to its high theoretical capacity and efficient selectivity to Cl-. However, the strong volume change during the conversion reaction significantly undermines the cycling performance of the Ag electrode. Additionally, achieving well-dispersed Ag in the active matrix is challenging, as Ag electrodes prepared by conventional thermal reduction tend to agglomerate. Herein, the organic linker confinement strategy is proposed, applying metal-organic framework (MOF) chemistry between Ag nodes and organic ligands to construct Ag-based MOF. The uniform dispersion of Ag at the molecular level, confined in the organic matrix, efficiently enhances the utilization of active sites, and strengthens the interfacial stability of Ag. Consequently, the Ag-MOF for the CDI anode exhibits an excellent Cl- removal capacity of 121.52 mg g-1 at 20 mA g-1 in 500 mg L-1 NaCl solution, and a high Ag utilization rate of 60.54%. After 100 cycles, a capacity retention of 96.93% is achieved. Furthermore, the Cl- capture mechanism of Ag-MOF is elucidated through density functional theory (DFT) calculations, ex situ XRD, ex situ Raman and XPS. This ingenious electrode design can offer valuable insights for the development of high-performance conversion electrodes for CDI applications.

Abstract
In the process of photocatalytic ammonia synthesis, efficient activation of nitrogen molecules constitutes a fundamental challenge. During the N2 activation, the close interdependence between the acceptance and donation of electron results in their mutual limitation, leading to high energy barrier for N2 activation and unsatisfactory photocatalytic performance. This work decoupled the electron acceptance and donation processes by constructing Fe-Bi dual active sites, resulting in enhancing N2 activation through the high electron trapping ability of Fe3+ and strong electron donating ability of Bi2+. The photocatalytic nitrogen reduction efficiency of 3%Fe/Bi2O2.33 (118.71 μmol gcat-1h-1) is 5.3 times that of Bi2O2.33 (22.41 μmol gcat-1h-1). In-situ Fourier transform infrared (In situ FTIR) spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT) calculations manifest that Fe3+-Bi2+ dual active sites work together to promote nitrogen adsorption and activation, and the reaction path is more inclined toward alternate hydrogenation path. N2 adsorption and activation properties are optimized by heteronuclear bimetallic active sites, which offers a new way for the rational design of nitrogen-fixing photocatalysts.

Abstract
The electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 to produce formic acid is gaining prominence as a critical technology in the pursuit of carbon neutrality. Nonetheless, it remains challenging to attain both substantial formic acid production and high stability across a wide voltage range, particularly when utilizing bismuth-based catalysts. Herein, we present a novel graphene quantum dot-mediated synthetic strategy to achieve the uniform deposition of highly dispersed bismuth nanoparticles on porous graphene. This innovative design achieves an elevated faradaic efficiency for formate of 87.0% at -1.11 V vs. RHE with high current density and long-term stability. When employing a flow cell, a maximum FEformate of 80.0% was attained with a total current density of 156.5 mA cm-2. The exceptional catalytic properties can be primarily attributed to the use of porous graphene as the support and the auxiliary contribution of graphene quantum dots, which enhance the dispersion of bismuth nanoparticles. This improved dispersion, in turn, has a significantly positive impact on CO2 activation and the generation of *HCOO intermediates to facilitate the formation of formate. This work presents a straightforward technique to create uniform metal nanoparticles on carbon materials for advancing various electrolytic applications.

Abstract
The practical application of carbon anode in capacitive deionization (CDI) is greatly hindered by their poor adsorption capacity and co-ion effect. Herein, an N-doped graphene-like carbon (NC) decorated with Fe/Fe3C nanoparticles composite (Fe/Fe3C@NC) with large specific surface area and plentiful porosity is fabricated via a facile and scalable method, namely sol-gel method combined with Fe-catalyzed carbonization. As expected, it exhibits superior CDI performance as a Cl-storage electrode, with Cl- adsorption capacity as high as 102.3 mg g-1 at 1000 mg L-1 Cl- concentration and 1.4 V voltage, and a stable capacity of 68.5 mg g-1 for 60 cycles in 500 mg L-1 Cl- concentration and 100 mA g-1 current density. More importantly, on the basis of electrochemical tests, ex-situ X-ray diffraction, ex-situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and XPS analysis with argon ion depth etching, it is revealed that the chlorine storage mechanism of the Fe/Fe3C@NC electrode is dominated by the surface-related redox pseudocapacitance behavior of Fe2+/Fe3+ couple occurring on or near the surface, enabling fast and reversible ion storage. This work proposes an economical and environmentally friendly general method for the design and development of high-performance Cl-storage electrodes for CDI, and offers an in-depth insight into the Cl- storage mechanism of Fe decorated carbon electrodes, further promoting the development of CDI technology.

Abstract
Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) are perceived as a hopeful capacitive deionization (CDI) faradic electrode for Cl- insertion due to its tunable composition, excellent anion exchange capacity, and fast redox activity. Nevertheless, the self-stacking and inferior electrical conductivity of the two-dimensional structure of LDH lead to unsatisfactory CDI performance. Herein, the three-dimensional (3D) hollow nanocage structure of CoNi-layered double hydroxide/carbon composites is well designed as a CDI anode by cation etching of the pre-carbonized ZIF-67 template. C/CoNi-LDH has a unique 3D hollow nanocage structure and abundant pore features, which can effectively suppress the self-stacking of LDH sheets and facilitate the transport of ions. Moreover, the introduced amorphous carbon layer can act as a conductive network. When employed as the CDI anode, C/CoNi-LDH exhibited a high Cl- removal capacity of 60.88 mg g-1 and a fast Cl- removal rate of 18.09 mg g-1 min-1 at 1.4 V in 1000 mg L-1 NaCl solution. The mechanism of the Cl- intercalation pseudo-capacitance reaction of C/CoNi-LDH is revealed by electrochemical kinetic analysis and ex situ characterization. This study provides vital guidance for the design of high-performance electrodes for CDI.

Abstract
Bismuth metal is regarded as a promising magnesium storage anode material for magnesium-ion batteries due to its high theoretical volumetric capacity and a low alloying potential versus magnesium metal. However, the design of highly dispersed bismuth-based composite nanoparticles is always used to achieve efficient magnesium storage, which is adverse to the development of high-density storage. Herein, a bismuth nanoparticle-embedded carbon microrod (Bi⊂CM), which is prepared via annealing of the bismuth metal-organic framework (Bi-MOF), is developed for high-rate magnesium storage. The use of the Bi-MOF precursor synthesized at an optimized solvothermal temperature of 120 °C benefits the formation of the Bi⊂CM-120 composite with a robust structure and a high carbon content. As a result, the as-prepared Bi⊂CM-120 anode compared to pure Bi and other Bi⊂CM anodes exhibits the best rate performance of magnesium storage at various current densities from 0.05 to 3 A g-1. For example, the reversible capacity of the Bi⊂CM-120 anode at 3 A g-1 is ∼17 times higher than that of the pure Bi anode. This performance is also competitive among those of the previously reported Bi-based anodes. Importantly, the microrod structure of the Bi⊂CM-120 anode material remained upon cycling, indicative of good cycling stability.
