Ni@CNTs/Al2O3 Ceramic Composites with Interfacial Solder Strengthen the Segregated Network for High Toughness and Excellent Electromagnetic Interference Shielding

Enhancing the Properties of Yttria-Stabilized Zirconia Composites with Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-Derived Nanocarbons

Ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) reinforced with nanocarbon have attracted significant interest due to their potential to enhance mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties. Although the investigation of carbon-based materials such as graphene and carbon nanotubes as additives for advanced ceramics has been widespread, the utilization of metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived nanocarbons in CMCs remains largely unexplored. We extended our previous proof-of-concept investigations by demonstrating the effectiveness of a different type of MOF-derived carbon as a reinforcing phase in an alternative ceramic matrix. We employed spark plasma sintering (SPS) to consolidate yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) and zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-67) powder blends at 1300 °C and a uniaxial pressure of 50 MPa. YSZ serves as the ceramic matrix, whereas ZIF-67 serves as the nanocarbon source. The composite exhibits a highly significant improvement in fracture toughness with an increase of up to 13% compared to that of the YSZ monolith. The formation of ZIF-derived nanocarbon interlayers is responsible for the observed enhancement in ductility, which can be attributed to their ability to facilitate energy dissipation during crack propagation and inhibit grain growth. Furthermore, the room-temperature electrical conductivity of the sintered samples demonstrates a substantial improvement, primarily due to the in situ formation of nanocarbon-based fillers, reaching an impressive 27 S/m with 10 wt % ZIF-67 content. Based on the results, it can be inferred that the incorporation of in situ MOF-derived nanocarbons into CMCs leads to a substantial improvement in both the mechanical and electrical properties.

High-performance EMI shielding effectiveness of Fe3O4-3D rPC nanocomposites: a systematic optimization in the X-band region

In this work, the microwave absorption (MWA) performance of a Fe3O4-3D reduced porous carbon nanocomposite (3D rPC NC) in the X-band region is reported. Three different shields are fabricated by altering the ratio of Fe3O4 nanoparticles (NPs) and 3D rPC and evaluating their microwave (MW) shielding performance with appropriate in-wearing instruments due to their minimum thickness. The chemical interaction between Fe3O4 NPs and 3D rPC is examined from chemical composition analysis of Fe3O4-3D rPC (1 : 2 ratio), which is confirmed by the presence of the Fe-O-C bond in the O 1s spectrum obtained from XPS analysis and subsequent analysis using FESEM images. Furthermore, it is found from N2 adsorption/desorption analysis that 3D rPC possesses a huge surface area of 787.312 m2 g-1 and showcases a type-V isotherm (mesoporous and/or microporous) behavior. The dielectric and magnetic losses of Fe3O4-3D rPC with a 1 : 2 ratio (tan δεr = 1.27 and tan δμr = 5.03) are higher than those of Fe3O4 NPs, 3D rPC and their NCs due to its magnetic and electrical conducting pathways modifying the material's polarization and dipole moment. The lightweight, polymer-free Fe3O4-3D rPC (1 : 2) NCs with minimum thickness on the order of 0.5 mm exhibited a higher total shielding effectiveness (SET = 41.285 dB), and it effectively blocked 99.9963% of the transmittance due to electric and magnetic polarization resulting from the presence of a heterogeneous interface surface.

Carbonized Syndiotactic Polystyrene/Carbon Nanotube/MXene Hybrid Aerogels with Egg-Box Structure: A Platform for Electromagnetic Interference Shielding and Solar Thermal Energy Management

Functional materials for electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding are a consistently hot topic in the booming communication engineering, proceeding the development that tends to the multifunctional EMI shielding materials. Herein, a series of carbonized syndiotactic polystyrene/carbon nanotube/MXene (CsPS/CNT/MXene) hybrid aerogels were fabricated for EMI shielding and solar thermal energy conversion purposes. To fabricate the hybrid aerogels, a porous CNT/MXene framework was initially prepared using freeze-casting. Subsequently, sPS was infused into the porous structure, followed by hyper-cross-linking and carbonization of sPS under an inert atmosphere. The resulting aerogels exhibited a distinctive egg-box structure, comprising numerous nanofibrous carbon microspheres embedded within the lamellar framework. The mass ratio between CNT and MXene was regulated to identify an optimum aerogel, that is, the CCM-4-6, which exhibited impressive properties including Young's compression modulus of 0.67 MPa, a water contact angle of 137.6 ± 4.1°, a specific surface area of 110 m2 g-1, an electrical conductivity of 43.0 S m-1, and an EMI SE value of 40 dB. Meanwhile, phase-change composites were fabricated through encapsulating paraffin wax within the hybrid aerogels. For the CCM-4-6 aerogel, a noteworthy encapsulation ratio was achieved at about 76.7%, along with remarkable latent heat, good thermal reliability, and commendable solar thermal energy conversion capacity. This study presents a facile route to prepare multifunctional EMI shielding materials.

Multifunctional CoFe2O4@MXene-AgNWs/Cellulose Nanofiber Composite Films with Asymmetric Layered Architecture for High-Efficiency Electromagnetic Interference Shielding and Remarkable Thermal Management Capability

Developing high-efficiency electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding composite films with outstanding flexibility and excellent thermal management capability is vital but challenging for modern integrated electronic devices. Herein, a facile two-step vacuum filtration method was used to fabricate ultrathin, flexible, and multifunctional cellulose nanofiber (CNF)-based composite films with an asymmetric layered architecture. The asymmetric layered structure is composed of a low-conductivity CoFe₂O₄@MXene/CNF layer and a highly conductive silver nanowires (AgNWs)/CNF layer. Benefiting from the rational placement of the impedance matching layer and shielding layer, as well as the synergistic effect of electric and magnetic losses, the resultant composite film exhibits an extremely high EMI shielding effectiveness (SE) of 73.3 dB and an average EMI SE of 70.9 dB with low reflected efficiency of 4.9 dB at only 0.1 mm thickness. Sufficiently reliable EMI SE (over 95% reservation) is attained even after suffering from continuous physical deformations and long-term chemical attacks. Moreover, the prepared films exhibit extraordinary flexibility, strong mechanical properties, and satisfactory thermal management capability. This work offers a viable strategy for exploiting high performance EMI shielding films with attractive thermal management capacity, and the resultant films present extensive application potential in aerospace, artificial intelligence, advanced electronics, stealth technology, and the national defense industry, even under harsh environments.
