Flexible Magnetic Micropartners for Micromanipulation at Interfaces

Fish-like magnetic microrobots for microparts transporting at liquid surfaces

Magnetic microrobots have tremendous potential applications due to their wireless actuation and fast response in confined spaces. Herein, inspired by fish, a magnetic microrobot working at liquid surfaces was proposed in order to transport microparts effectively. Different from other fish-like robots propelled by flexible caudal fins, the microrobot is designed as a simple sheet structure with a streamlined shape. It is fabricated monolithically utilizing polydimethylsiloxane doped with magnetic particles. The unequal thicknesses of different parts of the fish shape enable the microrobot to move faster via a liquid level difference around the body under an oscillating magnetic field. The propulsion mechanism is investigated through theoretical analysis and simulations. The motion performance characteristics are further characterized through experiments. It is interesting to find that the microrobot moves in a head-forward mode when the vertical magnetic field component is upward, whereas it moves in a tail-forward mode when the component is downward. Relying on the modulation of capillary forces, the microrobot is able to capture and deliver microballs along a given path. The maximum transporting speed can reach 1.2 mm s^-1, which is about three times the microball diameter per second. It is also found that the transporting speed with the microball is much higher than that of the microrobot alone. The reason for this is that when the micropart and microrobot combine, the increased asymmetry of the liquid surfaces caused by the forward movement of the gravity center can increase the forward driving force. The proposed microrobot and the transporting method are expected to have more applications in micromanipulation fields.

Dynamically reversible cooperation and interaction of multiple rotating micromotors

Micromotors have been shown to have great potential in various fields (e.g., targeted therapeutics, self-organizing systems), and research on the cooperative and interactive behaviours of multiple micromotors could potentially revolutionize many fields in terms of performing multiple or complex tasks to compensate for the limitations of individual micromotors; however, dynamically reversible transitions among diverse behaviours remain much less explored, and such dynamic transformations are advantageous for achieving complex tasks. Here, we present a microsystem consisting of multiple disk-like micromotors capable of performing reversible transformations between cooperative and interactive behaviours at the liquid surface. The micromotors with aligned magnetic particles in our system have great magnet properties, which provides a strong magnetic interaction with each other and is vital for the whole microsystem. We offer and analyse the physical models among multiple micromotors concerning the cooperative and interactive modes in the lower and higher frequency ranges, respectively, between which the state transformation can reversibly occur. Furthermore, based on the proposed reversible microsystem, the feasibility of the application of self-organization is verified by demonstrating three different dynamic self-organizing behaviours. Our proposed dynamically reversible system has great potential to serve as a paradigm for studying cooperative and interactive behaviours among multiple micromotors in the future.

Inkjet-Assisted Electroformation of Magnetically Guidable Water Striders for Interfacial Microfluidic Manipulation

Gerridae, colloquially called water striders, are a peculiar class of insects characterized by the extraordinary ability to walk on the surface of water bodies. Owing to this capacity, they constitute an ideal source of inspiration for designing untethered microdevices capable of navigating the interface between two fluids. Such steerable micrometric objects can be of great interest for various applications, ranging from the handling of floating objects to the remote control of microreactions and the manipulation of self-assembled monolayers. This paper describes the realization of artificial water striders via an inkjet-assisted electroforming approach. Inkjet deposition patterns the negative mask, which is subsequently filled with different layers of metals through electroforming. One of such layers is the magnetic alloy NiFe, which allows wireless propulsion of the striders by means of externally applied magnetic fields. The magnetic actuation tests prove good maneuverability at the water-air and silicone oil-air interfaces, with superior control over the speed and position of the devices. The surface of the devices is modified to tune its superficial energy in order to maximize buoyancy on these different combinations of fluids. A magnetic field-controlled strider manipulates a droplet and demonstrates collecting oil microdroplets and synthesizing platinum nanoparticles by chemical microreactions. Finally, the remotely operated microrobot could be employed in laboratories as a real avatar of chemists.

Molecular Machines and Microrobots: Nanoarchitectonics Developments and On-Water Performances

This review will focus on micromachines and microrobots, which are objects at the micro-level with similar machine functions, as well as nano-level objects such as molecular machines and nanomachines. The paper will initially review recent examples of molecular machines and microrobots that are not limited to interfaces, noting the diversity of their functions. Next, examples of molecular machines and micromachines/micro-robots functioning at the air-water interface will be discussed. The behaviors of molecular machines are influenced significantly by the specific characteristics of the air-water interface. By placing molecular machines at the air-water interface, the scientific horizon and depth of molecular machine research will increase dramatically. On the other hand, for microrobotics, more practical and advanced systems have been reported, such as the development of microrobots and microswimmers for environmental remediations and biomedical applications. The research currently being conducted on the surface of water may provide significant basic knowledge for future practical uses of molecular machines and microrobots.
