Abstract
Concerns about food safety have consistently driven the exploration of potent antimicrobials with probiotic origins. Identification of probiotic-derived bacteriocins as robust alternatives to antibiotics has gained traction following the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, the global market is witnessing an increasing preference for minimally processed food products free from chemical additives. Another contributing factor to the search for potent antimicrobials is the escalating number of infections caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria and the need to mitigate the significant damage inflicted on the commensal human microbiota by broad-spectrum antibiotics. As an alternative bio-preservation strategy, there is substantial enthusiasm for the use of bacteriocins or starter cultures producing bacteriocins in preserving a variety of food items. This review specifically focuses on bacteriocins originating from lactic acid bacteria associated with fermented foods and explores their technological applications as nanobiotics. The food-grade antibiotic alternatives, whether utilized independently or in combination with other antimicrobials and administered directly or encapsulated, are anticipated to possess qualities of safety, stability and non-toxicity suitable for application in the food sector. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
The pesticidal activity of the rhizome and aerial parts of Cautleya spicata (Sm.) Baker was investigated, revealing significant findings. The GC-MS analysis revealed significant compositional variability among the extracts. β-Sitosterol was identified as the dominant compound in all extracts prepared with hexane, acetone, and methanol, while α-humulene was prominently present in the rhizome extracts. The methanolic extracts of C. spicata demonstrated substantial nematicidal activity against Meloidogyne incognita and herbicidal activity against seeds of Raphanus raphanistrum subsp. Sativus (L.) (Radish) and Cichorium intybus L. (Chicory). Additionally, the extracts exhibited effective antibacterial activities against four bacterial strains, including Salmonella enterica serotype typhi, Escherichia coli, Listeria monocytogenes, and Staphylococcus aureus. In-silico molecular docking studies identified stigmasterol as exhibiting the best binding affinities with the studied proteins. These results highlight the potential of C. spicata extracts as promising candidates for the development of botanical pesticides and antibacterial agents.

Abstract
The practice of preserving and adding value to food dates back to over 10,000 BCE, when unintentional microbial-driven chemical reactions imparted flavor and extended the shelf life of fermented foods. The process evolved, and with the urbanization of society, significant shifts in dietary habits emerged, accompanied by sporadic food poisoning incidents. The repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic have intensified the search for antibiotic alternatives owing to the rise in antibiotic-resistant pathogens, emphasizing the exploration of probiotic-origin antimicrobial peptides to alleviate human microbiome collateral damage. Often termed 'molecular knives', these peptides outstand as potent antimicrobials due to their compatibility with innate microflora, amenability to bioengineering, target specificity, versatility and rapidity in molecular level mode of action. This review centres on bacteriocins sourced from lactic acid bacteria found in ethnic fermented foods, accentuating their desirable attributes, technological applications as nanobiotics and potential future applications in the modern context of ensuring food safety.

Abstract
Owing to the increase in multidrug-resistant bacterial isolates in hospitals globally and the lack of truly effective antimicrobial agents, antibiotic resistant bacterial infections have increased substantially. There is thus an urgent need to develop new antimicrobial drugs and their related formulations. In recent years, natural antimicrobial peptides (AMPs), AMP optimization, self-assembled AMPs, AMP hydrogels, and biomaterial-assisted delivery of AMPs have shown great potential in the treatment of bacterial infections. In this review, it is focused on the development prospects and shortcomings of various AMP-based biomaterials for treating animal model infections, such as abdominal, skin, and eye infections. It is hoped that this review will inspire further innovations in the design of AMP-based biomaterials for the treatment of bacterial infections and accelerate their commercialization.

Abstract
A class of piperazine hybridized coumarin indolylcyanoenones was exploited as new structural antibacterial frameworks to combat intractable bacterial resistance. Bioactive assessment discovered that 4-chlorobenzyl derivative 11f showed a prominent inhibition on Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853 with a low MIC of 1 μg/mL, which was four-fold more effective than norfloxacin. Importantly, the highly active 11f with inconspicuous hemolysis towards human red blood cells displayed quite low proneness to trigger bacterial resistance. Preliminary explorations on its antibacterial behavior disclosed that 11f possessed the ability to destroy bacterial cell membrane, leading to increased permeability of inner and outer membranes, the depolarization and fracture of membrane, and the effusion of intracellular components. Furthermore, bacterial oxidative stress and metabolic turbulence aroused by 11f also accelerated bacterial apoptosis. In particular, 11f could not only effectively inset into DNA, but also bind with DNA gyrase through forming supramolecular complex, thereby affecting the biological function of DNA. The above findings of new piperazine hybridized coumarin indolylcyanoenones provided an inspired possibility for the treatment of resistant bacterial infections.

Abstract
With the aid of a facile and green aqueous solution approach, a variety of copper oxide (CuO) with different shapes and polyacrylic-acid (PAA)-regulated silver-carried CuO (CuO@Ag) nanosheet composites have been successfully produced. The point of this article was to propose a common synergy using Ag-carried CuO nanosheet composites for their potential antibacterial efficiency against three types of bacteria such as E. coli, P. aeruginosa, and S. aureus. By using various technical means such as XRD, SEM, and TEM, the morphology and composition of CuO and CuO@Ag were characterized. It was shown that both CuO and CuO@Ag have a laminar structure and exhibit good crystallization, and that the copper source and reaction duration have a sizable impact on the morphology and size distribution of the product. In the process of synthesizing CuO@Ag, the appropriate amount of polyacrylic acid (PAA) can inhibit the agglomeration of Ag NPs and regulate the size of Ag at about ten nanometers. In addition, broth dilution, optical density (OD 600), and electron microscopy analysis were used to assess the antimicrobial activity of CuO@Ag against the above three types of bacteria. CuO@Ag exhibits excellent synergistic and antibacterial action, particularly against S. aureus. The antimicrobial mechanism of the CuO@Ag nanosheet composites can be attributed to the destruction of the bacterial cell membrane and the consequent leakage of the cytoplasm by the release of Ag+ and Cu2+. The breakdown of the bacterial cell membrane and subsequent leakage of cytoplasm caused by Ag+ and Cu2+ released from antimicrobial agents may be the cause of the CuO@Ag nanosheet composites' antibacterial action. This study shows that CuO@Ag nanosheet composites have good antibacterial properties, which also provides the basis and ideas for the application research of other silver nanocomposites.
