Programming Orientation in Liquid Crystalline Elastomers Prepared with Intra-Mesogenic Supramolecular Bonds

Hydrogen-bonded multi-mode liquid crystal elastomer actuators

As biomimicry advances, liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) are gaining attention for their (multi-)stimuli-responsiveness and reversible shape morphing. Introduction of dynamic bonds into the LCEs provides versatile means towards programmable shape morphing and adaptation to environmental cues, and new designs for dynamic LCEs are actively sought for. Here, we present a supramolecular LCE that integrates shape memory programming, humidity sensitivity, and photochemical actuation. By utilizing hydrogen bonding crosslinks, the LCE gains shape memory functionality, enabling arbitrary shape programming and photochemical actuation. By breaking the supramolecular crosslinks via base treatment, the LCE becomes hygroscopic and humidity sensitive, yet maintains photochemical deformability. These two states enable different types of soft actuator demonstrations both in air and under water, adding to the versatility and programmability of light-driven shape-changing LCEs.

Fast and Slow-Twitch Actuation via Twisted Liquid Crystal Elastomer Fibers

The performance of robotic systems can benefit from low-density material actuators that emulate muscle typology (e.g., fast and slow twitch) of natural systems. Recent reports detail the thermomechanical, chemical, electrical, and pneumatic response of twisted and coiled fibers. The geometrical constraints imparted on typically commodity materials realize distinguished stimuli-induced actuation including low density, high force, and moderate stroke. Here, actuators are prepared by twisting fibers composed of liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs). The actuators combine the inherent stimuli-response of LCEs with the geometrical constraints of twisted fiber actuators to dramatically increase the deformation rate, specific work, and achievable force output. In some geometries, the thermomechanical response of the LCE exhibits a pseudo-first-order transition.

Shape programming of liquid crystal elastomers

Liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) are shape-morphing materials that demonstrate reversible actuation when exposed to external stimuli, such as light or heat. The actuation's complexity depends heavily on the instilled liquid crystal alignment, programmed into the material using various shape-programming processes. As an unavoidable part of LCE synthesis, these also introduce geometrical and output restrictions that dictate the final applicability. Considering LCE's future implementation in real-life applications, it is reasonable to explore these limiting factors. This review offers a brief overview of current shape-programming methods in relation to the challenges of employing LCEs as soft, shape-memory components in future devices.

Defect-Engineered Charge Transfer in a PtCu/PrxCe1-xO2 Carbon-Free Catalyst for Promoting the Methanol Oxidation and Oxygen Reduction Reactions

Platinum (Pt) and Pt-based alloys have been extensively studied as efficient catalysts for both the anode and cathode of direct methanol fuel cells (DMFC). Defect engineering has been revealed to be practicable in tuning the charge transfer between Pt and transition metals/supports, which leads to the charge density rearrangement and facilitates the electrocatalytic performance. Herein, Pr-doped CeO2 nanocubes were used as the noncarbon support of a PtCu catalyst. The concentration and structure of oxygen vacancy (Vo) defects were engineered by Pr doping. Besides the Vo monomer, the oxygen vacancy with a linear structure is also observed, leading to the one-dimensional PtCu. The Vo concentration shows the volcanic scenario as Pr increased. Accordingly, the activities of PtCu/PrxCe1-xO2 toward methanol oxidation and oxygen reduction reactions exhibit the volcanic scenario. PtCu/Pr0.15Ce0.85O2 exhibits the optimal catalytic performance with the specific activity 3.57 times higher than that of Pt/C toward MOR and 1.34 times higher toward ORR. The MOR and ORR mass activities of PtCu/Pr0.15Ce0.85O2 reached 1.05 and 0.12 A·mg-1, which are 3.09 and 0.92 times the values of Pt/C, respectively. The abundant Vo afforded surplus electrons, which tailored the electron transfer between PtCu and PrxCe1-xO2, leading to enhanced catalytic performance of PtCu/PrxCe1-xO2. DFT calculations on PtCu/Pr0.15Ce0.85O2 revealed that Pr doping reduced the band gap of CeO2 and lowered the overpotential.

A dimensionally-reduced nonlinear elasticity model for liquid crystal elastomer strips with transverse curvature

Liquid crystalline elastomers (LCEs) are active materials that are of interest due to their programmable response to various external stimuli such as light and heat. When exposed to these stimuli, the anisotropy in the response of the material is governed by the nematic director, which is a continuum parameter that is defined as the average local orientation of the mesogens in the liquid crystal phase. This nematic director can be programmed to be heterogeneous in space, creating a vast design space that is useful for applications ranging from artificial ligaments to deployable structures to self-assembling mechanisms. Even when specialized to long and thin strips of LCEs - the focus of this work - the vast design space has required the use of numerical simulations to aid in experimental discovery. To mitigate the computational expense of full 3-d numerical simulations, several dimensionally-reduced rod and ribbon models have been developed for LCE strips, but these have not accounted for the possibility of initial transverse curvature, like carpenter's tape spring. Motivated by recent experiments showing that transversely-curved LCE strips display a rich variety of configurations, this work derives a dimensionally-reduced 1-d model for pre-curved LCE strips. The 1-d model is validated against full 3-d finite element calculations, and it is also shown to capture experimental observations, including tape-spring-like localizations, in activated LCE strips.
