Abstract
Residual small amounts of harmful substances in food or medicine are potential threats to human health. In this work, amino-functionalized UiO-66 was firstly prepared, namely UiO-66-(a), then it was further treated with phosgene to obtain UiO-66-(b) with abundant carboxyl groups. By doping, the fluorescent Rhodamine 6G (R6G) was incorporated into the structures of the two functional UiO-66s to obtain R6G@UiO-66-(a) and R6G@UiO-66-(b), respectively. These two materials can both emit fluorescence based on UiO-66s and R6G, therefore, were employed as fluorescent probes to construct two ratiometric fluorescent sensors to detect formaldehyde and amine compounds, respectively. Based on the aldehyde-amine condensation reaction between -NH2 and -CHO and the specific condensation reaction between -COOH and -NH2, formaldehyde molecules and amine compounds can react with these two materials, respectively. Causing a change in the relative fluorescence intensity of functionalized MOFs, resulting in selective detection of formaldehyde and amine compounds with the detection limit of 0.058 μM and 0.0017 μM (ethylenediamine), respectively. These two ratiometric fluorescent probes were successfully applied for quantitative detection of formaldehyde in beer and ethylenediamine in anti-inflammatory agents, demonstrating great practical potential for residual hazardous substance monitoring in food or medicine.

Abstract
Misuse of antibiotics and pesticides has led to hazardous effects on human health, livestock, agriculture, and aquaculture, which urges researchers to find simple, rapid, efficient, and cost-effective methods for quick on-site analysis of these organic pollutants with functional materials. Herein, a 2D chemically robust MOF: IITKGP-71, {[Cd(MBPz)(2,6-NDC)]·2H2O}n is strategically developed with ease in scalability and exploited as dual sensors toward the toxic antibiotic and pesticide detection via luminescence quenching in aqueous medium. The framework displays exceptional chemical robustness in water for 3 months, in an open atmosphere over 2 months, and wide range of aqueous pH solution (pH = 3-12) for a day. IITKGP-71 can selectively quench the nitrofuran antibiotics (NFZ and NFT) and organochlorine pesticide DCN while remaining unaffected by other interfering antibiotics and pesticides, respectively. An excellent trade-off between high effectivity (high Ksv) and high sensitivity (low LOD) was achieved for the targeted analytes. The easy scalability, high chemical stability, fast responsivity, multi-responsive nature, recyclability with outstanding structural stability made this framework viable in playing a crucial role in safeguarding aquatic ecosystems and public health from the hazardous effects of antibiotics and pesticides.

Abstract
Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are attractive adsorbents for heavy metal capture due to their superior stability, easy modification, and adjustable pore size. However, their inherent microporous structure poses challenges in achieving a higher adsorption capacity. Defect engineering is considered a simple method to create hierarchical MOFs with larger pores. Here, we employed l-aspartic acid as a mixed linker to bind Zr4+ clusters in competition with fumaric acid of MOF-801 to create defects, and the pore size was increased from 4.66 to 15.65 nm. Mercaptosuccinic acid was subsequently used as a postexchange ligand to graft the resultant MOF-801 by acid-ammonia condensation to further expand the pore size to 22.73 nm. Notably, the -NH2, -COOH, and -SH groups contributed by these two ligands increased the adsorption sites for Pb(II). The obtained defective MOF-801 with larger pores was thereafter loaded onto sodium alginate to form aerogel beads as adsorbents, and an adsorption capacity of 375.48 mg/g for Pb(II) was achieved, which is ∼51 times that of pristine MOF-801. The aerogel beads also exhibited outstanding reusability with a removal efficiency of ∼90.23% after 5 cycles of use. The adsorption mechanism of Pb(II) included ion-exchange interaction, as well as chelation interactions of Pb-O, Pb-NH2, and Pb-S. The versatile combination of defect engineering and composite beads provides novel inspirations for MOF modification for boosting heavy metal adsorption.

Abstract
High structural stability, dual organic-inorganic nature, and tunability in chemical functionality are promising characteristics of zirconium-based metal-organic frameworks (Zr-MOFs). These properties assist Zr-MOFs in extending their applications in various fields, especially adsorptive removal of pollutants. In this work, two well-known Zr-MOFs (UiO-66(Zr) and MIL-140(Zr) with the formula Zr6O4(OH)4(BDC)6, H2BDC is benzene 1,4-dicarboxylic acid) were synthesized and decorated with a dihydrotetrazine functional group through postsynthesis linker exchange (PSLE). Two dihydrotetrazine (DHTZ)-functionalized frameworks, UiO-66(Zr)-DHTZ and MIL-140(Zr)-DHTZ, were applied for the removal of quinoline (Qui) and indole (Ind) from the model oil. The results of adsorption experiments at room temperature display that these functionalized Zr-MOFs have significantly improved removal capacities for Qui (875% for UiO-66(Zr)-DHTZ and 303% for MIL-140(Zr)-DHTZ) and Ind (722% for UiO-66(Zr)-DHTZ and 257% for MIL-140(Zr)-DHTZ). Mechanistic studies based on X-ray photoelectron (XPS) and Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopies reveal that there is a specific kind of host-guest interaction between dihydrotetrazine and nitrogen-containing compounds (NCCs). UiO-66(Zr)-DHTZ adsorbs 1426 mg·g-1 Qui and 1176 mg·g-1 Ind, while MIL-140(Zr)-DHTZ adsorbs 619 mg·g-1 Qui and 511 mg·g-1 Ind. The lower adsorption capacities of MIL-140(Zr)-DHTZ compared to UiO-66(Zr)-DHTZ are related to its lower surface area (783 m2·g-1 versus 330 m2·g-1). The recyclability of the frameworks goes up to five cycles without any significant decrease in the removal capacity. These results indicate that dihydrotetrazine-functionalized Zr-MOFs are highly stable platforms with superior adsorption capacity compared to basic and neutral NCCs.

Abstract
Zirconium metal-organic frameworks (Zr-MOFs) are potential candidates for decontamination of water resources from harmful pollutants due to their modulable porosity and chemical stability in aqueous solutions. Linker functionalization is an approach for tuning the host-guest chemistry of Zr-MOFs and extends their applications in environmental monitoring. In this work, the structure of UiO-66(Zr) (formulated Zr6(OH)4O4(BDC)6, BDC2- = benzene-1,4-dicarboxylate) was functionalized with dihydrotetrazine group via postsynthesis linker exchange (PSLE) method. The functionalized framework, UiO-66(Zr)-DHTZ, was applied for the removal of arsenate ions from aqueous solutions. The results show that UiO-66(Zr)-DHTZ can adsorb 583 mg g-1 of As(V) at pH = 7 after 2 h, which is significantly higher than that of the UiO-66(Zr). According to X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR), the removal mechanism is based on possible hydrogen bindings between free -C-NH and -C═N- sites of dihydrotetrazine function with -O- and -OH sites of As(V) species. Removal tests in real samples show that UiO-66(Zr)-DHTZ still has a high capacity (220 mg g-1) to As(V) ions in complex matrixes and also can decrease the concentration of As(V) below the detection limit (0.05 ppm) of the inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) method. Since the dihydrotetrazine-decorated UiO-66(Zr)-DHTZ reaches one the highest adsorption capacities to As(V) species, it can be considered a potential candidate for water treatment in real-life applications.
