Review on Interfacial Bonding Mechanism of Functional Polymer Coating on Glass in Atomistic Modeling Perspective

Atomistic modeling methods are successfully applied to understand interfacial interaction in nanoscale size and analyze adhesion mechanism in the organic-inorganic interface. In this paper, we review recent representative atomistic simulation works, focusing on the interfacial bonding, adhesion strength, and failure behavior between polymer film and silicate glass. The simulation works are described under two categories, namely non-bonded and bonded interaction. In the works for non-bonded interaction, three main interactions, namely van der Waals interaction, polar interaction, and hydrogen bonds, are investigated, and the contributions to interfacial adhesion energy are analyzed. It is revealed that the most dominant interaction for adhesion is hydrogen bonding, but flexibility of the polymer film and modes of adhesion measurement test do affect adhesion and failure behavior. In the case of bonded interactions, the mechanism of covalent silane bond formation through condensation and hydrolysis process is reviewed, and surface reactivity, molecular density, and adhesion properties are calculated with an example of silane functionalized polymer. Besides interfacial interactions, effects of external conditions, such as surface morphology of the glass substrate and relative humidity on the adhesion and failure behavior, are presented, and modeling techniques developed for building interfacial system and calculating adhesion strengths are briefly introduced.

Preparation and Antitumoral Activity of Au-Based Inorganic-Organometallic Nanocomposites

The synergy between gelator molecules and nanostructured materials is currently a novel matter of study. The possibility to carefully design the skeleton of the molecular entity as well as the nanostructure's morphological and chemical features offers the possibility to prepare a huge variety of nanocomposites with properties potentially different than just the sum of those of the individual building blocks. Here we describe the synthesis and characterization of nanocomposites made by the unconventional combination of phosphine-Au(I)-alkynyl-based organometallic gelating molecules and plasmonic Au nanoparticles. Our results indicate that the interaction between the two moieties leads to a significant degree of aggregation in both hydrophilic and hydrophobic media, either when using DAPTA or PTA-based organometallic molecules, with the formation of a sponge-like hybrid powder upon solvent evaporation. The biological activity of the nanocomposites was assessed, suggesting the existence of a synergetic effect evidenced by the higher cytotoxicity of the hybrid systems with respect to that of any of their isolated counterparts. These results represent a preliminary proof-of-concept for the exploitation of these novel nanocomposites in the biomedical field.

A Mass-Producible and Versatile Sensing System: Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance Excited by Individual Waveguide Modes

A plasmonic sensing system that allows the excitation of localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) by individual waveguide modes is presented conceptually and experimentally. Any change in the local environment of the gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) alters the degree of coupling between LSPR and a polymer slab waveguide, which then modulates the transmission-output signal. In comparison to conventional LSPR sensors, this system is less susceptible to optical noise and positional variation of signals. Moreover, it enables more freedom in the exploitation of plasmonic hot spots with both transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) modes. Through real-time measurement, it is demonstrated that the current sensing system is more sensitive than comparable optical fiber plasmonic sensors. The highest normalized bulk sensitivity (7.744 RIU^-1) is found in the TM₁ mode. Biosensing with the biotin-streptavidin system shows that the detection limit is on the order of 10^-14 M of streptavidin. With further optimization, this sensing system can easily be mass-produced and incorporated into high throughput screening devices, detecting a variety of chemical and biological analytes via immobilization of the appropriate recognition sites.
