Crucial Role of Oxidation Debris of Carbon Nanotubes in Subsequent End-Use Applications of Carbon Nanotubes

Environmentally Induced Changes of Commercial Carbon Nanotubes in Aqueous Suspensions. Adaptive Behavior of Bacteria in Biofilms

The effects of environmental factors such as sunlight irradiation and the presence of humic acid (HA) on the physicochemical properties of commercial multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) suspended in a simulated inorganic matrix (SIM) and their impacts on bacteria growing in biofilms were evaluated. Both solar irradiation and the presence of HA lead to the dissolution of adsorbed metals on the MWCNT, which are residues of synthesis catalysts. Also, preferential adsorption of certain HA components on the MWCNT induces important modifications in the aliphatic/aromatic relationship of HA components in solution and the generation and release of new moieties. Results demonstrated that the variation of such physicochemical parameters strongly affects the interactions of MWCNT with Pseudomonas aeruginosa sessile bacteria. Thus, the number of attached bacteria increased, and stress responses such as decrease in bacterial size were found in the presence of sunlight-irradiated MWCNT with a particular distribution of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) strands. A shielding effect was observed when HA was added. It was concluded that physicochemical alterations caused by environmental conditions (with/without irradiation, presence/absence of HA) on MWCNT-containing SIM trigger distinctive adaptive behavior of bacteria in biofilms. This information must be taken into account in the development of biologically assisted treatments for organic metal co-contamination of MWCNT-containing media since MWCNT discharge alters the physicochemical properties and composition of the aqueous environment and the response of the biofilms that interact with it.

Opening the internal structure for transport of ions: improvement of the structural and chemical properties of single-walled carbon nanohorns for supercapacitor electrodes

We investigated the electrochemical performance of single-walled carbon nanohorns (SWCNHs) for use as supercapacitor electrodes. For the first time, we used acid-treatment for oxidation of SWCNHs and hole creation in their structure. A detailed study was performed on the correlation between the oxidation of SWCNHs via acid treatment and variable acid treatment times, the structural properties of the oxidized carbon nanostructures, and the specific capacitance of the SWCNH electrodes. We showed that simple functionalization of carbon nanostructures under controlled conditions leads to an almost 3-fold increase in their specific capacitance (from 65 to 180 F g⁻¹ in 0.1 M H₂SO₄). This phenomenon indicates higher accessibility of the surface area of the electrodes by electrolyte ions as a result of gradual opening of the SWCNH internal channels.

Surface Characterization of Carbonaceous Materials Using Inverse Gas Chromatography: A Review

It is essential to understand the adsorption of guest molecules on carbon-based materials for both theoretical and practical reasons. It is crucial to analyze the surface properties of carbon-based materials with a wide range of applications (e.g., catalyst supports, hydrogen storage, sensors, adsorbents, separation media, etc.). Inverse gas chromatography (IGC) as a powerful and sensitive technique can be used to characterize the surface physicochemical properties (i.e., Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area, surface energy heterogeneity, heat of adsorption, specific interaction of adsorption, work of cohesion, glass transition temperatures, solubility, and so forth) of various types of materials such as powders, films, and fibers. In this review, the principles, common methods, and application of IGC are discussed. In addition, the examples of various experiments developed for the IGC to characterize the carbonaceous materials (such as carbon nanotubes, graphite, and activated carbon) are discussed.
