Water on Graphene-Coated TiO2: Role of Atomic Vacancies

Removal of Organic Pollutants with Polylactic Acid-Based Nanofiber Composites

In the process of using nano-titanium dioxide (TiO2) photocatalytic treatment of organic polluted liquid, the easy aggregation and recycling difficulty of nano-TiO2 particles are important problems that cannot be avoided. Anchoring nano-TiO2 to the substrate not only limits the aggregation of nano-TiO2, but also facilitates the easy removal and reuse of nano-TiO2 after processing. Herein, coaxial electrospun nanofibrous (NFs) made of L-polylactic acid (PLLA) and chitosan (CS) are coated with graphene oxide (GO) and TiO2 for the enhanced oxidation of organic pollutants. The adsorption and photocatalysis experiment results show that, for methyl orange (MO) dye solution, the saturated removal of MO by PLLA/CS, PLLA/CS-GO and PLLA/CS-GO/TiO2 nanofibers are 60.09 mg/g, 78.25 mg/g and 153.22 mg/g, respectively; for the Congo red (CR) dye solution, the saturated removal of CR by PLLA/CS, PLLA/CS-GO and PLLA/CS-GO/TiO2 nanofiber materials were 138.01 mg/g, 150.22 mg/g and 795.44 mg/g, respectively. These three composite nanofiber membrane materials can maintain more than 80% of their adsorption capacity after four repeated cycles. They are environmentally friendly and efficient organic pollution remediation materials with promising application.

Synthesis, modification and application of titanium dioxide nanoparticles: a review

Titanium dioxide (TiO₂) has been heavily investigated owing to its low cost, benign nature and strong photocatalytic ability. Thus, TiO₂ has broad applications including photocatalysts, Li-ion batteries, solar cells, medical research and so on. However, the performance of TiO₂ is not satisfactory due to many factors such as the broad band gap (3.01 to 3.2 eV) and fast recombination of electron-hole pairs (10^-12 to 10^-11 s). Plenty of work has been undertaken to improve the properties, such as structural and dopant modifications, which broaden the applications of TiO₂. This review mainly discusses the aspects of TiO₂-modified nanoparticles including synthetic methods, modifications and applications.

Influence of Defects and Heteroatoms on the Chemical Properties of Supported Graphene Layers

A large and growing number of theoretical papers report the possible role of defects and heteroatoms on the chemical properties of single-layer graphene. Indeed, they are expected to modify the electronic structure of the graphene film, allow for chemisorption of different species, and enable more effective functionalisation. Therefore, from theoretical studies, we get the suggestion that single and double vacancies, Stone–Wales defects and heteroatoms are suitable candidates to turn nearly chemically inert graphene into an active player in chemistry, catalysis, and sensoristics. Despite these encouraging premises, experimental proofs of an enhanced reactivity of defected/doped graphene are limited because experimental studies addressing adsorption on well-defined defects and heteroatoms in graphene layers are much less abundant than theoretical ones. In this paper, we review the state of the art of experimental findings on adsorption on graphene defects and heteroatoms, covering different topics such as the role of vacancies on adsorption of oxygen and carbon monoxide, the effect of the presence of N heteroatoms on adsorption and intercalation underneath graphene monolayers, and the role of defects in covalent functionalisation and defect-induced gas adsorption on graphene transistors.

Role of Undercoordinated Sites for the Catalysis in Confined Spaces Formed by Two-Dimensional Material Overlayers

Adding a two-dimensional (2D) overlayer on a metal surface is a promising route for activating reactants confined in the interfacial space. However, an atomistic understanding of the role played by undercoordinated sites of the 2D overlayer in the activation of molecules in this nanoscaled confined space is yet to be developed. In this paper, we study CO dissociation as a prototypical reaction to investigate CO activation in the confined space enclosed by Rh(111) and a monolayer of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN). The effect of the space size (i.e., the distance between h-BN and the metal surface), the type of undercoordinated sites, and the size of the defect are explicitly studied by density functional theory with dispersion correction. The following temperature-programmed X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurement suggests that a small portion of the CO dissociated during the desorption, leaving the residual atomic oxygen incorporated into the h-BN lattice, which validates the theoretical prediction. The combination of theory and experiment calls for further attention to be paid to the role of undercoordinated sites in the 2D overlayers in confined systems forming potential new catalytic environments.

On the stability of hydroxyl groups on substituted titania

The present study reports the stability of hydroxyl groups involving the surface coordinated oxygens of Pd,C,N-doped, and Pd/C and Pd/N-codoped anatase TiO₂, probed using DFT calculations.

Origin of Charge Trapping in TiO2/Reduced Graphene Oxide Photocatalytic Composites: Insights from Theory

Composites of titanium dioxide (TiO₂) and reduced graphene oxide (RGO) have proven to be much more effective photocatalysts than TiO₂ alone. However, little attention has been paid so far to the chemical structure of TiO₂/RGO interfaces and to the role that the unavoidable residual oxygen functional groups of RGO play in the photocatalytic mechanism. In this work, we develop models of TiO₂ rutile (110)/RGO interfaces by including a variety of oxygen functional groups known to be present in RGO. Using hybrid density functional theory calculations, we demonstrate that the presence of oxygen functional groups and the formation of interfacial cross-links (Ti-O-C covalent bonds and strong hydrogen bonds between TiO₂ and RGO) have a major effect on the electronic properties of RGO and RGO-based composites. The electronic structure changes from semimetallic to semiconducting with an indirect band gap, with the lowest unoccupied band positioned below the TiO₂ conduction band and largely localized on RGO oxygen and carbon orbitals, with some contributions of RGO-bonded Ti atoms. We suggest that this RGO-based lowest unoccupied band acts as a photoelectron trap and the indirect nature of the band gap hinders electron-hole recombination. These results can explain the experimentally observed extended lifetimes of photoexcited charge carriers in TiO₂/RGO composites and the enhancement of photocatalytic efficiency of these composites.
