Patchy Templated Synthesis of Macroporous Colloidal Hollow Spheres and Their Application as Catalytic Microreactors

One-step fabrication of millimeter-scale hollow vesicles with chitosan /DADMAC/ sodium alginate graft copolymer for enhanced anionic dye adsorption

Hollow vesicles are promising in water treatment due to their unique structure of the membrane and inner cavity. However, the adsorption capacity needs to be improved for targeted pollutants. Herein, millimeter-scale hollow vesicles were prepared with a one-step process of sequential stirring and grafting using chitosan, diallyldimethylammonium chloride, and sodium alginate as raw materials with the purpose of efficient removal of anionic dyes from wastewater. The composite vesicles were characterized using scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction. The hollow vesicles showed the structure of the cationic membrane and the inner cavity, facilitating the dye adsorption. The adsorption capacity for the anionic dye Reactive Black 5 reached 698.1 mg/g, more than twice that of the binary composite vesicles without graft. The adsorption kinetics and isotherm data coincided with the pseudo-second-order and Langmuir models, respectively, and the adsorption mechanism was monolayer chemisorption. Moreover, the vesicles worked well in wide ranges of environment pH, temperature, and co-existing pollutants. They also possessed excellent cyclic regeneration performance, in which 93 % of the initial adsorption capacity was maintained after four cycles. These results indicate that the millimeter-scale hollow vesicles exhibit broad application prospects for wastewater purification.

Porous Self-Assemblies Mediated by Dumbbell Particles as Cross-Linking Agents

Self-assembly of colloidal particles is emerging as a promising approach for producing novel materials. These colloidal particles can be synthesized with protrusions (lobes) on their surfaces that allow the formation of porous structures with a wide range of applications. Using Langevin dynamics simulations, we studied self-assembly in the binary mixtures of lobed colloidal particles with variations in their lobe sizes to investigate the feasibility of using dumbbell particles (with two lobes) as cross-linkers to increase the porosity in self-assembled morphologies. Each binary system was formed by mixing the dumbbell particles with one of the following types of particles: trigonal planar (three lobes), tetrahedral (four lobes), trigonal bipyramidal (five lobes), and octahedral (six lobes). We observed that the lobe size on each particle can be tuned to favor the formation of random aggregates and spherical aggregates when the lobes are larger and well-ordered crystalline structures when the lobes are smaller. We also observed that these polydisperse systems form self-assembled structures characterized by porosities higher than those of the structures formed by the monodisperse systems. These results indicate that the lobe size is an important design feature that can be optimized to achieve desired structures with distinct morphologies and porosities, and the dumbbell particles are effective cross-linking agents to enhance the porosity in self-assembled structures.

Complex Polymeric Microstructures with Programmable Architecture via Pickering Emulsion-Templated In Situ Polymerization

Aside from smooth and spherical microcapsules, the concept of tailoring complex polymeric microstructures is being taken a step ahead due to their great demand in various applications and fundamental studies in the subjects of microfluidics and nanotechnology. Size, shape, and morphology are of paramount importance for their functional performance and various applications. However, simple, inexpensive, versatile, and high-throughput techniques for fabricating microcapsules with controlled morphology remain a bottleneck for discoveries in the subject of polymer colloids. In this paper, we directly fulfill this need by reporting a novel approach of Pickering emulsion-templated in situ polymerization for tailoring complex polymeric microstructures comprised of a composite shell of titanium dioxide nanoparticle (TiO₂ NP)-embedded poly(melamine-urea-formaldehyde) (polyMUF) and a core of hexadecane (HD, soft template). At first, we hydrophobize TiO₂ NPs by chemisorbing long-chain biobased myristic acid via a bidentate chelating complex and precisely tune their wettability by varying the grafting density of myristic acid to obtain highly stable oil-in-water (O/W) Pickering emulsion. Thereafter, we employ the optimized TiO₂ NPs in the intended encapsulation strategy that enables various microstructures and morphologies with the particle diameter ranging from 5 to 20 μm. Careful manipulation of reaction parameters and copolymer components leads to novel complex microstructures: smooth, raspberry-like, partially budded, hollow, filled, single-holed, and closed-cell-like microstructures. Particle properties such as morphology, size, shell thickness, and core content are governed by the TiO₂ NP content, core-to-shell ratio, copolymer component, conversion, and pH value. Based on the results of a series of control experiments, novel mechanisms for the formation of various such microstructures are proposed.

A Brief Overview of Recent Progress in Porous Silica as Catalyst Supports

Porous silica particles have shown applications in various technological fields including their use as catalyst supports in heterogeneous catalysis. The mesoporous silica particles have ordered porosity, high surface area, and good chemical stability. These interesting structural or textural properties make porous silica an attractive material for use as catalyst supports in various heterogeneous catalysis reactions. The colloidal nature of the porous silica particles is highly useful in catalytic applications as it guarantees better mass transfer properties and uniform distribution of the various metal or metal oxide nanocatalysts in solution. The catalysts show high activity, low degree of metal leaching, and ease in recycling when supported or immobilized on porous silica-based materials. In this overview, we have pointed out the importance of porous silica as catalyst supports. A variety of chemical reactions catalyzed by different catalysts loaded or embedded in porous silica supports are studied. The latest reports from the literature about the use of porous silica-based materials as catalyst supports are listed and analyzed. The new and continued trends are discussed with examples.

Mesoporous Nanostructures Encapsulated with Metallic Nanodots for Smart SERS Sensing

In virtue of uniform mesopores and core-shell nanoarchitectures, metallic nanodot-encapsulated hollow mesoporous nanostructures have shown promising potential in various applications. However, their fabrication with versatile tunability of the encapsulated metallic content has been a challenge. Herein, we have prepared metallic nanodot-encapsulated hollow mesoporous silica nanoparticles (M-HMSNPs) with adjustable inner metallic components. The sacrificial template of polystyrene (PS) nanoparticles precoated with metals (Au/Ag/Pt) is fully wrapped with mesoporous silica (mSiO₂). The metallic nanodots are formed during the template removal process by calcination. The type and content of the encapsulated nanodots can be readily and precisely controlled by the initially deposited metallic layers. We demonstrate the application of the gold (Au) nanodot-loaded HMSNPs (denoted Au-HMSNPs) as smart surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) probes, which can screen between big molecules and small analytes. With the aid of a Raman reporter, the SERS probe can successfully quantify H₂O₂, which is used to distinguish cancer cells in vitro. Further integrated with enzymes, the SERS chips of specificity are prepared and used to detect corresponding substrates of glucose and uric acid, responsively. Besides SERS sensing, the current strategy can inspire future development of many other M-HMSNPs for various applications such as catalysis, energy storage, theranostics, etc.

Inkjet Printing of a Micro/Nanopatterned Surface to Serve as Microreactor Arrays

Microreactors are of great importance for chemical reaction screening, nanoparticle synthesis, protein crystallization, DNA detection, organic synthesis, etc. Here, we reported an effective, flexible, and low-cost method for fabricating microreactor arrays by inkjet printing technology. This strategy utilizes the controllable sliding behavior of the three-phase contact line to form hydrophilic-hydrophobic micropatterns for microreactors with sizes low to several hundreds of nanometers. Reactions in the order of 1 × 10^-21 mol molecules can be realized in these microreactors, and crystallization processes can also be conducted to synthesize single crystals.
