Abstract
Surfaces with high aspect ratio microarray structures can implement sophisticated assignment in typical fields including microfluidics, sensor, biomedicine, et al. via regulating their deformation or the material properties. Inspired by natural materials and systems, for example sea cockroaches, water spiders, cacti, lotus leaves, rice leaves, and cedar leaves, many researchers have focused on microneedle functional surface studies. When the surface with high aspect ratio microarray structures is stimulated by the external fields, such as optical, electric, thermal, magnetic, the high aspect ratio microarray structures can undergo hydrophilic and hydrophobic switching or shape change, which may be gifted the surfaces with the ability to perform complex task, including directional liquid/air transport, targeted drug delivery, microfluidic chip sensing. In this review, the fabrication principles of various surfaces with high aspect ratio microarray structures are classified and summarized. Mechanisms of liquid manipulation on hydrophilic/hydrophobic surfaces with high aspect ratio microarray structures are clarified based on Wenzel model, Cassie model, Laplace pressure theories and so on. Then the intelligent control strategies have been demonstrated. The applications in microfluidic, drug delivery, patch sensors have been discussed. Finally, current challenges and new insights of future prospects for dynamic manipulation of liquid/air based on biomimetic surface with high aspect ratio microarray structures are also addressed.

Abstract
Adhesion is the key functionality to pick-and-place objects in wet environments. Recently, various micropillars and external stimuli have been proposed to achieve reversible wet adhesion. However, their underlying mechanisms of liquid/solid regulations have not been sufficiently revealed. Herein, two kinds of magnetically responsive micropillar arrays with different terminals (pointed and flat) are developed using a spray self-assembly method. The coupling effect of geometric structures and external stimuli on the wet adhesion performance between a solid substrate and the developed surface is discussed. In situ observation and analysis of theoretical models demonstrate that changes in adhesive forces are mainly caused by the length of the liquid bridge and the apparent contact angle of the developed surface. The adhesion conversion efficiency in the presence of an on/off magnetic field can achieve a highest value of 72% for the micropillar arrays with flat terminals, which exceeds 3 times that of the micropillar arrays with pointed terminals. In addition, wet adhesion measurements during the process of repeatedly switching the magnetic field demonstrate the durability and cyclic reversibility of the magnetically responsive surface. Furthermore, the transportation of microcomponents verifies the application potential of the magnetically responsive surface, which may provide inspiration for transfer printing systems and wet climbing robots.

Abstract
The accumulation of ice on surfaces will bring safety issues to various human activities. Researchers have been actively developing superhydrophobic surfaces (SHS) as good anti-icing materials. However, some limitations, such as high cost, complexity of preparation, and lack of sufficient durability in extreme environments, restrict their practical applications. Inspired by bronchial mucosa cilia structure and the superhydrophobic lotus leaf structure, we generated ordered magnetic microcilia arrays (MMA) surfaces within 1 min by a fast and controllable microhole assisted magnetic-induced microcilia self-growth method. Fluoride-free superhydrophobic MMA (SMMA) was prepared by impregnating MMA into hexadecyltrimethoxysilane (HDTMS) modified SiO2 solution. SMMA exhibits excellent static anti-icing performance, which can significantly delay the freezing of static droplets in supercooled environments. The SMMA surface still maintains excellent dynamic anti-icing performance at -30 °C after 100 times of supercooled droplet impact. Furthermore, SMMA shows anti-icing performance for up to 2 months at low temperatures (-18 °C). Due to the sensitive magnetic response and excellent bending properties of the cilia, the MMA and SMMA surfaces also demonstrate outstanding multifunctional droplet manipulation under a magnetic field. The MMA surface has the ability to vertically capture and release droplets. The SMMA can achieve horizontal transport of droplets, mixing and microchemical detection, antigravity droplet transport in an 8° inclined array, and even complex objects can be easily transported. More importantly, the SMMA surface exhibits outstanding mechanical durability and chemical stability. It provides insights into the preparation of integrated anti-icing and droplet manipulation surfaces by using a simple green and low-cost method.

Abstract
Droplet manipulation on superhydrophobic surfaces (DMSS) without conventional pipetting is an emerging liquid handling technology, which can be potentially used for diagnostic, analysis, and synthetic processes. Despite notable progress, controlling droplet motion on superhydrophobic surfaces by contactless acoustic waves is rarely reported. Herein, we report a contactless acoustic tweezer (CAT) for DMSS based on establishing ultrasonic standing wave between an ultrasound transducer (UST) and a superhydrophobic substrate to manipulate droplets without physical contact. The CAT utilizes acoustic radiation forces to trap and move droplets on superhydrophobic surfaces, which allows for precise and controllable movement of droplets by controlling the movement of the UST. Small droplets with volume less than 20 μL can be levitated in mid-air for out-plane manipulation, and large droplets with volume up to 500 μL can be trapped for in-plane manipulation. Experimental results demonstrate the versatility of the CAT for manipulating droplets with various compositions and volumes on various superhydrophobic substrates, offering a versatile and cross-contamination-free liquid handling approach for applications, including but not limited to high-throughput surface-enhanced Raman scattering.

Abstract
Shape memory-assisted self-healing polymers have drawn attention over the past few years owing to their interdisciplinary and wide range of applications. Self-healing and shape memory are two approaches used to improve the applicability of polymers in the biomedical field. Combining both these approaches in a polymer composite opens new possibilities for its use in biomedical applications, such as the "close then heal" concept, which uses the shape memory capabilities of polymers to bring injured sections together to promote autonomous healing. This review focuses on using shape memory-assisted self-healing approaches along with their respective affecting factors for biomedical applications such as tissue engineering, drug delivery, biomaterial-inks, and 4D printed scaffolds, soft actuators, wearable electronics, etc. In addition, quantification of self-healing and shape memory efficiency is also discussed. The challenges and prospects of these polymers for biomedical applications have been summarized.

Abstract
Bioinspired smart superwetting surfaces with special wettability have aroused great attention from fundamental research to technological applications including self-cleaning, oil-water separation, anti-icing/corrosion/fogging, drag reduction, cell engineering, liquid manipulation, and so on. However, most of the reported smart superwetting surfaces switch their wettability by reversibly changing surface chemistry rather than surface microstructure. Compared with surface chemistry, the regulation of surface microstructure is more difficult and can bring novel functions to the surfaces. As a kind of stimulus-responsive material, shape-memory polymer (SMP) has become an excellent candidate for preparing smart superwetting surfaces owing to its unique shape transformation property. This review systematically summarizes the recent progress of smart superwetting SMP surfaces including fabrication methods, smart superwetting phenomena, and related application fields. The smart superwettabilities, such as superhydrophobicity/superomniphobicity with tunable adhesion, reversible switching between superhydrophobicity and superhydrophilicity, switchable isotropic/anisotropic wetting, slippery surface with tunable wettability, and underwater superaerophobicity/superoleophobicity with tunable adhesion, can be obtained on SMP micro/nanostructures by regulating the surface morphology. Finally, the challenges and future prospects of smart superwetting SMP surfaces are discussed.

Abstract
Biomimetic structures based on the magnetic response have attracted ever-increasing attention in droplet manipulation. Till now, most methods for droplet manipulation by a magnetic response are only applicable to a single droplet. It is still a challenge to achieve on-demand and precise control of multiple droplets (≥2). In this paper, a strategy for on-demand manipulation of multiple droplets based on magnetism-responsive slanted micropillar arrays (MSMAs) is proposed. The Glaco-modified superhydrophobic surface is the basis of multiple-droplet manipulation. The droplet's motion mode (pinned, unidirectional, and bidirectional) can be readily fine-tuned by changing the volume of droplets and the speed of the magnetic field. The rapid movement of droplets (10-80 mm/s) in the horizontal direction is realized by the unidirectional waves of the micropillar array driven by a specific magnetic field. The bending angle of micropillars can be rapidly and reversibly adjusted from 0 to 90° under the action of a magnetic field. Meanwhile, the liquid-involved light, electric switch, and biomedical detection can be designed by manipulating the droplets on demand. The superiority of MSMAs in multiple-droplet programmable manipulation opens up an avenue for applications in microfluidic and biomedical engineering.

Abstract
Researches on superhydrophobicity have been overwhelming and have shown great advantages in various fields. However, the abrasion resistance of superhydrophobic structures was usually poor, and they were easily damaged by external force or harsh environment, which greatly limited the applications of superhydrophobic surfaces. Much attention has been paid to improving the abrasion resistance of superhydrophobic materials by researchers. In this review, aimed at the advances on improving the abrasion resistance of superhydrophobic surfaces, it was summarized and compared three enhancement strategies including the reasonably design of micro-nano structures, the adoption of adhesives, and the preparation of self-healing surface. Finally, the applications of typical superhydrophobic materials with abrasion resistance were reviewed in various fields. In order to broaden the application fields of superhydrophobic materials, the abarasion resistance should be further improved. Therefore, we proposed the ideas for the future development of superhydrophobic materials with higher abrasion resistance. We hope that this review will provide a new approach to the preparation and development of stable superhydrophobic surfaces with higher abrasion resistance.

Abstract
Superwetting surfaces have recently attracted extensive attention in oil-water emulsion separation and droplet manipulations, which are widely used in various situations ranging from wastewater treatment, to flexible electronics, to biochemical diagnosis. However, it still remains challenging to obtain asymmetric materials with high efficiency during oil-water separation. Meanwhile, excellent robustness of the superhydrophobic surface is of significance but retards the mobility of droplets due to increased lateral adhesion of small spacing between solid protrusions. Herein, a facile approach is demonstrated to obtain the excellent robustness of Janus fabrics with asymmetric wettability. As for one side of water-in-oil emulsion separation, mimicking the soft earthworm with periodically wrinkled skin, an adaptive superhydrophobic fabric was fabricated by wrapping soft wrinkled poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) polymer with a cross-linking structure on woven fabric fibers induced by Ar plasma treatment. In addition, inspired by the desert beetle's structure but with reversed wettability, the other side of the Janus fabric was constructed for treating emulsion of oil-in-water. In addition, the underwater superoleophobic surface consisting of magnetically responsive PDMS microcilia with slippery heads, which shows robustness against pH, improved water drop mobility and lowered the resistance of fluid friction similar to the intrinsic hydrophobic Salvinia molesta with additional slippery performance. Hence, we propose a novel and easy approach that optimizes enhanced emulsion separation and reduced fluid drag properties simultaneously, which actively broadens their widespread applications.

Abstract
Incorporating a pattern-memorizing surface into a multi-functional shape memory polymer (SMP) offers various extraordinary opportunities for their engineering applications. However, current memory-patterned approaches prepared by artificial loading are at the cost of initial balance, whose potential is greatly limited by the internal relationship between thermodynamic equilibrium and the entropy-driven pattern-memorizing cycle. Here, a robust yet effective strategy is presented for fabricating a spontaneous pattern on a poly(styrene-block-butadiene-block-styrene) (SBS)-based SMP with a gradient crosslinking network via molecular diffusion for equilibrium. Benefiting from the photo-induced diffusion of maleimide, the resulting steady-state pattern as a permanent shape ensures the recovery of morphology, and the gradient network formed by the diffusion-regulated spatial Diels-Alder (D-A) crosslinking reaction makes the pattern memory cycle from existence to elimination possible. Furthermore, taking advantage of an uneven structural network, the shape reconfigurations from 2D patterned sheets to 3D configurations with a patterned surface can be achieved conveniently through a shape memory effect, simplifying programming setups. In addition, this type of 3D shape also can shift back to a 2D patterned film via an inverse D-A decrosslinking reaction upon thermal treatment. This straightforward approach for fabricating a pattern of a single layer on an SMP surface with a spatial gradient network opens a new avenue for functional smart materials, which expands the technological perspectives in many fields of flexible electronics, smart actuators, switching sensors and soft robotics.

Abstract
Synergistic self-healing materials and inorganic particles to create self-healing superhydrophobic surfaces for improving their robustness is a common technique, but the suitability between the two is rarely mentioned. In this work, we developed a multifunctional superhydrophobic coating with room-temperature stability, mechanical stability, self-healing, and NIR stimuli response, in which self-healing polyurethane (PU) serves as the interface reinforcement layer and poly(dopamine) (PDA)-coated flower-like ZnO composite particles serve as the hydrophobic layer. A series of temperature-dependent self-healing PU materials were designed and synthesized by regulating the ratio of hard and soft chain segments in PU, and the relationship between the healing temperature of PU and the hydrophobic stability of the composite coatings was investigated. Based on dynamic hydrogen and disulfide bonds, PUs displayed excellent self-healing performance. Thanks to the self-healing and interfacial strengthening effect of PU and the photothermal properties of PDA, the composite coating exhibits not only excellent mechanical stability but also rapid self-healing ability in response to NIR stimuli. Furthermore, the smart coating demonstrated superior self-cleaning and corrosion resistance. This work provides a reference for developing strong and stable water-repellent reversible superhydrophobic coatings with great potential and promising future.

Abstract
Liquid crystalline elastomers (LCEs) are polymer networks exhibiting anisotropic liquid crystallinity while maintaining elastomeric properties. Owing to diverse polymeric forms and self-alignment molecular behaviors, LCEs have fascinated state-of-the-art efforts in various disciplines other than the traditional low-molar-mass display market. By patterning order to structures, LCEs demonstrate reversible high-speed and large-scale actuations in response to external stimuli, allowing for close integration with 4D printing and architectures of digital devices, which is scarcely observed in homogeneous soft polymer networks. In this review, we collect recent advances in 4D printing of LCEs, with emphases on synthesis and processing methods that enable microscopic changes in the molecular orientation and hence macroscopic changes in the properties of end-use objects. Promising potentials of printed complexes include fields of soft robotics, optics, and biomedical devices. Within this scope, we elucidate the relationships among external stimuli, tailorable morphologies in mesophases of liquid crystals, and programmable topological configurations of printed parts. Lastly, perspectives and potential challenges facing 4D printing of LCEs are discussed.

Abstract
Recently, slippery surfaces with controllable droplet sliding have aroused much attention in both fundamental research and realistic application. However, for almost all existing surfaces, constant stimuli such as thermal, light, magnetic fields, etc., are indispensable. Herein, by constructing pit structures on shape memory polymer and further infusing oil with low surface tension, we report a shape memory slippery surface that can overcome the above imperfection. Based on the shape memory performance, the surface can memorize diverse pit size as the surface is stretched or recovered. With the variation of pit structure, the sliding performances for both water and organic liquid droplets can be reversibly adjusted between the rolling and pinning states. This work, based on the shape memory effect, reports smart droplet sliding control through regulating surface microstructure, which not only provides a strategy for droplet sliding control, but also offers some fresh ideas for designing novel intelligent slippery surface.

Abstract
Bubbles play a crucial role in multidisciplinary industrial applications, e.g., heat transfer and mass transfer. However, existing methods to manipulate bubbles still face many challenges, such as buoyancy inhibition, hydrostatic pressure, gas dissolving, easy deformability, and so on. To circumvent these constraints, here we develop a bioinspired anisotropic slippery cilia surface to achieve an elegant bubble transport by tuning its elastic modulus, which results from the different contacts of bubbles with cilia, i.e., soft cilia will be easily bent by the bubble motion, while hard cilia will pierce into the bubble, consequently leading to the asymmetric three-phase contact line and resistance force. Moreover, a real-time and arbitrarily directional bubble manipulation is also demonstrated by applying an external magnetic field, enabling the scalable operation of bubbles in a remote manner. Our work exhibits a strategy of regulating bubble behavior smartly, which will update a wide range of gas-related sciences or technologies including gas evolution reactions, heat transfer, microfluidics, and so on.

Abstract
Microstructured surfaces with stimuli-responsive performances have aroused great attention in recent years, but it still remains a significant challenge to endow surfaces with precisely controlled morphological changes in microstructures, so as to get the precise control of regional properties (e.g., friction, adhesion). Herein, a kind of carbonyl iron particle-doped shape memory polyurethane micropillar with precisely controllable morphological changes is realized, upon remote near-infrared light (NIR) irradiation. Owing to the reversible transition of micropillars between bent and upright states, the micro-structured surface exhibits precisely controllable low-to-high friction transitions, together with the changes of friction coefficient ranging from ∼0.8 to ∼1.2. Hence, the changes of the surface friction even within an extremely small area can be precisely targeted, under local NIR laser irradiation. Moreover, the water droplet adhesion force of the surface can be reversibly switched between ∼160 and ∼760 μN, demonstrating the application potential in precisely controllable wettability. These features indicate that the smart stimuli-responsive micropillar arrays would be amenable to a variety of applications that require remote, selective, and on-demand responses, such as a refreshable Braille display system, micro-particle motion control, lab-on-a-chip, and microfluidics.

Abstract
Shape memory polymers (SMPs) are a class of smart materials that change shape when stimulated by environmental stimuli. Different from the shape memory effect at the macro level, the introduction of micro-patterning technology into SMPs strengthens the exploration of the shape memory effect at the micro/nano level. The emergence of shape memory micro/nano patterns provides a new direction for the future development of smart polymers, and their applications in the fields of biomedicine/textile/micro-optics/adhesives show huge potential. In this review, the authors introduce the types of shape memory micro/nano patterns, summarize the preparation methods, then explore the imminent and potential applications in various fields. In the end, their shortcomings and future development direction are also proposed.

Abstract
Wearable superwettable surfaces with dynamic tunable wettability and self-healability are promising for advanced wearable electronics, whereas have been rarely reported. Herein, a flexible superhydrophobic shape memory film (SSMF) with switchable surface wettability and high strain sensitivity has been conveniently fabricated. The surface topography of the SSMF can be finely adjusted by a reversible stretching (bending)/recovery way, which makes it feasible to control the surface-switchable adhesive superhydrophobicity by simple body movements, demonstrating great advantages in selective droplet manipulation and smart control of droplet movement. Moreover, benefitting from the hierarchical micro/nanostructures and outstanding sensing performance, the flexible SSMFs with good adaptivity and durability can serve as smart wearable sensors attached to human skin to achieve full-range and real-time detection of human motions and intelligent control of Internet of Things. More interestingly, the unique dynamic dewetting property enables the sensors to work in a humid environment or rainy days. Overall, this work successfully integrates dynamic tunable superwettability into design of intelligent wearable electronics with multifunctions. The obtained SSMF-based wearable surface with dynamic dewetting properties reveals great potential in versatile application fields such as liquid-repellent electronics, wearable droplet manipulators, and all-weather intelligent actuators.

Abstract
Liquid directional self-transport on the functional surface plays an important role in both industrial and academic fields. Inspired by the natural cactus spine and pitcher plant, we have successfully designed a kind of geometry-gradient slippery surface (GGSS) based on aluminum alloy materials which could actively achieve directional self-movement and also antigravity self-movement of various liquid droplets by topography gradient. The mechanism of liquid directional self-transport was theoretically explored through the mechanical analysis of the triple contact line, which was mainly related to the competition between the driven force induced by Laplace pressure and the adhesive force induced by viscous resistance. The adhesive force between the droplet and the surface was quantitatively measured using a homemade experimental apparatus and the results showed that the lateral adhesive force on the GGSS is much smaller than that on the original surface. Additionally, a series of quantitative experiments were conducted to explore the influence of droplet volume and vertex angle on the transport distance and velocity. Finally, we achieved the antigravity self-transport of the droplet on the inclined GGSS to further verify the self-transport ability of the GGSS. We believe that the proposed GGSS with liquid directional self-transport ability in the present work would provide some potential opportunities in modern tribo-systems to optimize the lubricating qualities, especially the lubrication and friction at the extreme contact interface.

Abstract
Smart control of wettability on superwetting surfaces has aroused much attention in the past few years. Compared with traditional strategies such as adjusting the surface chemistry, regulating the surface microstructure is more difficult, though it can bring lots of new functions. Recently, it was found that, based on the shape memory effect of a shape memory polymer, the surface microstructure can be controlled more easily and precisely. Here, recent developments in the smart control of wettability on superwetting shape memory microstructures and corresponding applications are summarized. The primary concern is the superhydrophobic surfaces that have demonstrated numerous attractive functions, including controllable droplet storage, transportation, bouncing, capture/release, and reprogrammable gradient wetting, under variation of the surface microstructure. Finally, some achievements in wetting control on other superwetting surfaces (such as superomniphobic surfaces and superslippery surfaces) and perspectives on future research directions are also discussed.

Abstract
Recently, smart liquid permeation has aroused much attention. However, existing strategies to achieve such a goal are often based on reversibly controlling hydrophobicity/hydrophilicity on static porous structures, which are unsuitable for oils with low surface tension, and meanwhile they cannot realize tunable permeation flux since the pore sizes are constant. Herein, we report a superlyophilic shape memory porous sponge (SSMS) that can demonstrate tunable pore size from about 28 nm to 900 μm as the material's shape is changed. Based on the controllability in pore size, not only ON/OFF penetration but also precisely tunable permeation flux can be obtained for both water and oil. Furthermore, by using the SSMS, an application in accurate release of small-molecule rhodamine B was also demonstrated. This work reports a material with tunable pore size for controllable liquid permeation, which provides some ideas for designing smart superwetting permeation materials.

Abstract
Shape memory polymers (SMPs) are macromolecules in which linear chains and crosslinking points play a key role in providing a shape memory effect. As smart polymers, SMPs have the ability to change shape, stiffness, size, and structure when exposed to external stimuli, leading to potential uses for SMPs throughout our daily lives in a diverse range of areas including the aerospace and automotive industries, robotics, biomedical engineering, smart textiles, and tactile devices. SMPs can be fabricated in many forms and sizes from the nanoscale to the macroscale, including nanofibers, nanoparticles, thin films, microfoams, and bulk devices. The introduction of nanostructure into SMPs can result in enhanced mechanical properties, unique structural color, specific surface area, and multiple functions. It is necessary to enhance the current understanding of the various nano/microstructures of SMPs and their fabrication, and to find suitable approaches for constructing SMP-based nano/microstructures for different applications. In this review, we summarize the current state of different SMP nano/microstructures, fabrication techniques, and applications, and give suggestions for their future development.
