Membrane-based technology in water and resources recovery from the perspective of water social circulation: A review

In this review, the application of membrane-based technology in water social circulation was summarized. Water social circulation encompassed the entire process from the acquirement to discharge of water from natural environment for human living and development. The focus of this review was primarily on the membrane-based technology in recovery of water and other valuable resources such as mineral ions, nitrogen and phosphorus. The main text was divided into four main sections according to water flow in the social circulation: drinking water treatment, agricultural utilization, industrial waste recycling, and urban wastewater reuse. In drinking water treatment, the acquirement of water resources was of the most importance. Pressure-driven membranes, such as ultrafiltration (UF), nanofiltration (NF) and reverse osmosis (RO) were considered suitable in natural surface water treatment. Additionally, electrodialysis (ED) and membrane capacitive deionization (MCDI) were also effective in brackish water desalination. Agriculture required abundant water with relative low quality for irrigation. Therefore, the recovery of water from other stages of the social circulation has become a reasonable solution. Membrane bioreactor (MBR) was a typical technique attributed to low-toxicity effluent. In industrial waste reuse, the osmosis membranes (FO and PRO) were utilized due to the complex physical and chemical properties of industrial wastewater. Especially, membrane distillation (MD) might be promising when the wastewater was preheated. Resources recovery in urban wastewater was mainly divided into recovery of bioenergy (via anaerobic membrane bioreactors, AnMBR), nitrogen (utilizing MD and gas-permeable membrane), and phosphorus (through MBR with chemical precipitation). Furthermore, hybrid/integrated systems with membranes as the core component enhanced their performance and long-term working ability in utilization. Generally, concentrate management and energy consumption control might be the key areas for future advancements of membrane-based technology.

Basket anode filled with CaCO3 particles: A membrane-free electrochemical system for boosting phosphate recovery and product purity

Phosphorus (P) is often regarded as the primary stimulant for eutrophication, while its importance as a crucial life element is also well acknowledged. Given its future scarcity, P recycling from waste streams is suggested and practiced. Electrochemically mediated precipitation (EMP) is a robust and chemical-free process for P removal and recovery, yet it requires further developments. The first generation of the CaCO₃-packed electrochemical precipitation column successfully solved the problem of H⁺-OH^- recombination, achieving enhanced P removal efficiency with less energy consumption but suffering from low Ca-phosphate purity in recovered products. Herein, a new concept of a basket-anode electrochemical system is proposed and validated to prevent direct H⁺-OH^- recombination and enhance product purity. The CaCO₃ pellets packed basket anode alleviates the OH^- depletion by CaCO₃-H⁺ interaction and provides extra Ca²⁺ for enhanced P removal. The novel structure of the basket anode, by its derived acidic anode region and alkaline cathode region, completely avoids the precipitation of Ca-phosphate on the packed CaCO₃ and greatly facilitates the collection of high-quality Ca-phosphate product. Our results suggest that almost 100% of the removed P was in high-purity, highly crystalline Ca-phosphate on the cathode. The recovered products contained significantly more P (13.5 wt%) than in the previous study (0.1 wt%) at similar energy consumptions (29.8 kWh/kg P). The applied current density, pellets size, and influent P concentration were critical for P removal performance, product purity, and power consumption. We further demonstrated the long-term stability of this novel system and its technical and economic feasibility in treating real stored urine. Our study provides new cell architectural designs to enhance the performance of EMP systems and may inspire innovations and developments in other electrochemical water treatment processes.

Efficient Phosphorus Recovery from Municipal Wastewater Using Enhanced Biological Phosphorus Removal in an Anaerobic/Anoxic/Aerobic Membrane Bioreactor and Magnesium-Based Pellets

Municipal wastewater has been identified as a potential source of natural phosphorus (P) that is projected to become depleted in a few decades based on current exploitation rates. This paper focuses on combining a bench-scale anaerobic/anoxic/aerobic membrane bioreactor (MBR) and magnesium carbonate (MgCO₃)-based pellets to effectively recover P from municipal wastewater. Ethanol was introduced into the anoxic zone of the MBR system as an external carbon source to improve P release via the enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) mechanism, making it available for adsorption by the continuous-flow MgCO₃ pellet column. An increase in the concentration of P in the MBR effluent led to an increase in the P adsorption capacity of the MgCO₃ pellets. As a result, the anaerobic/anoxic/aerobic MBR system, combined with a MgCO₃ pellet column and ethanol, achieved 91.6% P recovery from municipal wastewater, resulting in a maximum P adsorption capacity of 12.8 mg P/g MgCO₃ through the continuous-flow MgCO₃ pellet column. Although the introduction of ethanol into the anoxic zone was instrumental in releasing P through the EBPR, it could potentially increase membrane fouling by increasing the concentration of extracellular polymeric substances (EPSs) in the anoxic zone.
