Achieving Circularly Polarized Surface Emitting Perovskite Microlasers with All-Dielectric Metasurfaces

Spatial photoluminescence and lifetime mappings of quasi-2D perovskites coupled with a dielectric metasurface

Light-matter interaction between quantum emitters and optical cavities plays a vital role in fundamental quantum photonics and the development of optoelectronics. Resonant metasurfaces are proven to be an efficient platform for tailoring the spontaneous emission (SE) of the emitters. In this work, we study the interplay between quasi-2D perovskites and dielectric TiO2 metasurfaces. The metasurface, functioning as an open cavity, enhances electric fields near its plane, thereby influencing the emissions of the perovskite. This is verified through angle-resolved photoluminescence (PL) studies. We also conducted reflectivity measurements and numerical simulations to validate the coupling between the quasi-2D perovskites and photonic modes. Notably, our work introduces a spatial mapping approach to study Purcell enhancement. Using fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM), we directly link the PL and lifetimes of the quasi-2D perovskites in spatial distribution when positioned on the metasurface. This correlation provides unprecedented insights into emitter distribution and emitter-resonator interactions. The methodology opens a new (to the best of our knowledge) approach for studies in quantum optics, optoelectronics, and medical imaging by enabling spatial mapping of both PL intensity and lifetime, differentiating between uncoupled quantum emitters and those coupled with different types of resonators.

Advances in the Application of Perovskite Materials

Nowadays, the soar of photovoltaic performance of perovskite solar cells has set off a fever in the study of metal halide perovskite materials. The excellent optoelectronic properties and defect tolerance feature allow metal halide perovskite to be employed in a wide variety of applications. This article provides a holistic review over the current progress and future prospects of metal halide perovskite materials in representative promising applications, including traditional optoelectronic devices (solar cells, light-emitting diodes, photodetectors, lasers), and cutting-edge technologies in terms of neuromorphic devices (artificial synapses and memristors) and pressure-induced emission. This review highlights the fundamentals, the current progress and the remaining challenges for each application, aiming to provide a comprehensive overview of the development status and a navigation of future research for metal halide perovskite materials and devices.

Double-sided asymmetric metasurfaces achieving sub-microscale focusing from a GaN green laser diode

We proposed and demonstrated a highly efficient sub-microscale focusing from a GaN green laser diode (LD) integrated with double-sided asymmetric metasurfaces. The metasurfaces consist of two nanostructures in a GaN substrate: nanogratings on one side and a geometric phase based metalens on the other side. When it was integrated on the edge emission facet of a GaN green LD, linearly polarized emission was firstly converted to the circularly polarized state by the nanogratings functioning as a quarter-wave plate, the phase gradient was then controlled by the metalens on the exit side. In the end, the double-sided asymmetric metasurfaces achieve a sub micro-focusing from linearly polarized states. Experimental results show the full width at half maximum of the focused spot size is about 738 nm at the wavelength 520 nm and the focusing efficiency is about 72.8%. Our results lay a foundation for the multi-functional applications in optical tweezers, laser direct writing, visible light communication, and biological chip.

Phase-assisted Bessel-metasurface: a single-sized approach for simultaneous printing and holography

Due to the unprecedented wavefront shaping capability, the metasurface has demonstrated state-of-the-art performances in various applications, especially in printing and holography. Recently, these two functions have been combined into a single metasurface chip to achieve a capability expansion. Despite the progress, current dual-mode metasurfaces are realized at the expense of an increase in the difficulty of the fabrication, reduction of the pixel resolution, or strict limitation in the illumination conditions. Inspired by the Jacobi-Anger expansion, a phase-assisted paradigm, called Bessel metasurface, has been proposed for simultaneous printing and holography. By elaborately arranging the orientations of the single-sized nanostructures with geometric phase modulation, the Bessel metasurface can not only encode a greyscale printing image in real space but can reconstruct a holographic image in k-space. With the merits of compactness, easy fabrication, convenient observation, and liberation of the illumination conditions, the design paradigm of the Bessel metasurface would have promising prospects in practical applications, including optical information storage, 3D stereoscopic displays, multifunctional optical devices, etc.

Optical Metasurfaces for Energy Conversion

Nanostructured surfaces with designed optical functionalities, such as metasurfaces, allow efficient harvesting of light at the nanoscale, enhancing light-matter interactions for a wide variety of material combinations. Exploiting light-driven matter excitations in these artificial materials opens up a new dimension in the conversion and management of energy at the nanoscale. In this review, we outline the impact, opportunities, applications, and challenges of optical metasurfaces in converting the energy of incoming photons into frequency-shifted photons, phonons, and energetic charge carriers. A myriad of opportunities await for the utilization of the converted energy. Here we cover the most pertinent aspects from a fundamental nanoscopic viewpoint all the way to applications.

Aggregation-Induced Emission and Circularly Polarized Luminescence Duality in Tetracationic Binaphthyl-Based Cyclophanes

Here, we report an approach to the synthesis of highly charged enantiopure cyclophanes by the insertion of axially chiral enantiomeric binaphthyl fluorophores into the constitutions of pyridinium-based macrocycles. Remarkably, these fluorescent tetracationic cyclophanes exhibit a significant AIE compared to their neutral optically active binaphthyl precursors. A combination of theoretical calculations and time-resolved spectroscopy reveal that the AIE originates from limited torsional vibrations associated with the axes of chirality present in the chiral enantiomeric binaphthyl units and the fine-tuning of their electronic landscape when incorporated within the cyclophane structure. Furthermore, these highly charged enantiopure cyclophanes display CPL responses both in solution and in the aggregated state. This unique duality of AIE and CPL in these tetracationic cyclophanes is destined to be of major importance in future development of photonic devices and bio-applications.

Ultracompact Orbital Angular Momentum Sorter on a CMOS Chip

On-chip integrated orbital angular momentum (OAM) sorting is of great importance in tackling the severe challenge of exponential growth in data traffic. Despite the continuous success, current demultiplexing techniques either scarify efficiency dramatically or lose the compactness of a system. Here we experimentally demonstrate an ultracompact OAM sorter using TiO₂ metasurfaces integrated onto a complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) camera. By utilizing the propagation phases, we transfer the unitary transformation theory in bulky systems into two TiO₂ metasurfaces, responsible for the functions of log-polar transformation and fan-out beam copying and focusing as well as the functions of phase correction and Fourier transform. The flatform metasurface doublet enables one to integrate the OAM sorter onto a camera chip. Consequently, OAM beams with topological charges of m = -3 to 3 were separated by a CMOS camera with an average crosstalk of -6.43 dB. This approach shall shed light on next-generation OAM modes processing.

Helically Chiral Hybrid Cyclodextrin Metal-Organic Framework Exhibiting Circularly Polarized Luminescence

Three achiral polycyclic aromatic fluorophores─namely, 1-pyrenecarboxylic acid, 9-anthracenecarboxylic acid, and perylene-3,9-dicarboxylic acid─were chosen based on their desired properties before being incorporated into the construction of a K⁺-carrying gamma-cyclodextrin (γ-CD)-based metal-organic framework (CD-MOF-1) and γ-CD-containing hybrid frameworks (CD-HFs). Among these fluorophores, only the pyrene-carrying one shows significant noncovalent bonding interactions with γ-CD in solution. This fluorophore is encapsulated in a CD-HF with a trigonal superstructure instead of the common cubic CD-MOF-1 found in the case of the other two fluorophores. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis of the trigonal CD-HF reveals a π-stacked chiral positioning of the pyrene-carrying fluorophore inside the (γ-CD)₂ tunnels and held uniformly around an enantiomorphous 3₂ screw axis along the c direction in the solid-state structure. This helix-like structure demonstrates an additional level of chirality over and above the point-chiral stereogenic centers of γ-CD and the axial chirality associated with the self-assembled π-stacked fluorophores. These arrangements result in specifically generated photophysical and chiroptical properties, such as the controlled emergence of circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) emission. In this manner, a complete understanding of the mechanism of chirality transfer from a chiral host (CD-HF) to an encapsulated achiral fluorophore has been achieved, an attribute which is often missing in the development of materials with CPL.

All-Dielectric Metasurface-Enabled Multiple Vortex Emissions

On-chip integrated micro- and nanoscale vortex lasers are key elements for addressing the exponentially growing demand for information capacity. Although tunable vortex microlasers have been reported, each laser pulse still possesses one particular topological charge and requires additional multiplexing. In this study, the simultaneous generation of coherent laser arrays with different topological charges by combining metalenses with semiconductor microlasers is demonstrated. A TiO₂ vortex metalens converts two orbital angular momentum beams into the same diffraction-limit spot with opposite circular polarizations through spin-to-orbital conversion. Consequently, the microlaser emission at the focal spot, which can be decomposed into two circularly polarized beams, is collimated into vortex microlaser beams with two different topological charges through a time-reversal process. This concept is extended to a 2 × 2 metalens array by introducing off-axis terms, and eight topological charges are produced simultaneously. This research is a significant step toward the on-chip integration of micro- and nanolasers.

Generating ultraviolet perfect vortex beams using a high-efficiency broadband dielectric metasurface

Due to the topological charge-independent doughnut spatial structure as well as the association of orbital angular momentums, perfect vortex beams promise significant advances in fiber communication, optical manipulation and quantum optics. Inspired by the development of planar photonics, several plasmonic and dielectric metasurfaces have been constructed to generate perfect vortex beams, instead of conventional bulky configuration. However, owing to the intrinsic Ohmic losses and interband electron transitions in materials, these metasurface-based vortex beam generators only work at optical frequencies up to the visible range. Herein, using silicon nitride nanopillars as high-efficiency half-wave plates, broadband and high-performance metasurfaces are designed and demonstrated numerically to directly produce perfect vortex beams in the ultraviolet region, by combining the phase profiles of spiral phase plate, axicon and Fourier transformation lens based on geometric phase. The conversion efficiency of the metasurface is up to 86.6% at the design wavelength. Moreover, the influence of several control parameters on perfect vortex beam structures is discussed. We believe that this ultraviolet dielectric generator of perfect vortex beams will find many significant applications, such as high-resolution spectroscopy, optical tweezer and on-chip communication.
