Cooperation between Dual Metal Atoms and Nanoclusters Enhances Activity and Stability for Oxygen Reduction and Evolution

The Accurate Synthesis of a Multiscale Metallic Interface on Graphdiyne

The accurate construction of composite material systems containing graphdiyne (GDY) and other metallic materials has promoted the formation of innovative structures and practical applications in the fields of energy, catalysis, optoelectronics, and biomedicine. To fulfill the practical requirements, the precise formation of multiscale interfaces over a wide range, from single atoms to nanostructures, plays an important role in the optimization of the structural design and properties. The intrinsic correlations between the structure, synthesis process, characteristic properties, and device performance are systematically investigated. This review outlines the current research achievements regarding the controlled formation of multiscale metallic interfaces on GDY. Synthetic strategies for interface regulation, as well as the correlation between the structure and performance, are presented. Furthermore, innovative research ideas for the design and synthesis of functional metal-based materials loaded onto GDY-based substances are also provided, demonstrating the promising application potential of GDY-based materials.

Sharply expanding single-atomically dispersed Fe-N active sites through bidirectional coordination for oxygen reduction

For Fe-NC systems, high-density Fe-N sites are the basis for high-efficiency oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), and P doping can further lower the reaction energy barrier, especially in the form of metal-P bonding. However, limited to the irregular agglomeration of metal atoms at high temperatures, Fe-P bonds and high-density Fe-N cannot be guaranteed simultaneously. Here, to escape the random and violent agglomeration of Fe species during high-temperature carbonization, triphenylphosphine and 2-methylimidazole with a strong metal coordination capability are introduced together to confine Fe growth. With the aid of such bidirectional coordination, the high-density Fe-N site with Fe-P bonds is realized by in situ phosphorylation of Fe in an Fe-NC system (Fe-P-NC) at high temperatures. Impressively, the content of single-atomically dispersed Fe sites for Fe-P-NC dramatically increases from 2.8% to 65.3% compared with that of pure Fe-NC, greatly improving the ORR activity in acidic and alkaline electrolytes. The theoretical calculation results show that the generated Fe2P can simultaneously facilitate the adsorption of intermediates to Fe-N4 sites and the electron transfer, thereby reducing the reaction energy barrier and obtaining superior ORR activity.

CuCl2/FeCl3 Bimetallic Photocatalyst for Sustainable Ethylene Production from Ethanol via Recoverable Redox Cycles

Photocatalytic conversions of ethanol to valuable chemicals are significant organic synthesis reactions. Herein, we developed a CuCl2/FeCl3 bimetallic photocatalyst for sustainable dehydration of ethanol to ethylene by recoverable redox cycles. The selectivity of ethylene was 98.3% for CuCl2/FeCl3, which is much higher than that of CuCl2 (34.5%) and FeCl3 (86.5%). Due to the ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) process involved in generating the liquid products, the CuCl2/FeCl3 catalyst will be reduced to CuCl/FeCl2. Oxygen (O2) is required for the recovery of CuCl2/FeCl3 to avoid exhaustion. The soluble Fe3+/Fe2+ redox species deliver catalyst regeneration properties more efficiently than single metal couples, making a series of redox reactions (Cu2+/Cu+, Fe3+/Fe2+, and O2/ethanol couples) recyclable with synergistic effects. A flow reactor was designed to facilitate the continuous production of ethylene. The understanding of bimetallic synergism and consecutive reactions promotes the industrial application process of photocatalytic organic reactions.

π-Conjugated Macrocycles Confined Dual Single-Atom Catalysts on Graphitized Bubbles for Oxygen Reduction, Evolution, and Batteries

It is a great demand to develop high-performance electrodes for metal-air batteries to boost cathodic oxygen reduction/evolution dynamics and avoid anodic dendrites. The optimization of catalysis at electrode can be conducted by increasing effective surface exposure, active site density, and unsaturated coordination, via using metal clusters or atomic catalysts, along with conductive or defective supports. Herein, the polarized and synergistic cooperation between dual single atom sites (Fe-N4/Co-N4) are developed through electrolytical exfoliation of defect-enriched π-conjugated macrocyclic polyphthalocyanines to expose more active sites on hollow carbonized shells (HCS). Such FeCo-N4/HCS exhibits outstanding performance in oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), to achieve high-performance in an aqueous zinc battery (AZB) with a high discharge capacity (763.6 mAhg-1) after 750 cycles at 10 mA cm-2, showing stable discharge voltage and excellent durability. It also possesses high performance in a lithium-O2 battery owing to abundant defects, synergistic Fe-N4/Co-N4 active sites, reduced energy barriers, and boosted charge and mass transfer and reaction kinetics. This study provides novel perspectives to expand dual single-metal catalysts on macrocycles in the exploration of efficient, durable, and eco-friendly energy devices.

Coupling Ni Single Atomic Sites with Metallic Aggregates at Adjacent Geometry on Carbon Support for Efficient Hydrogen Peroxide Electrosynthesis

Single atomic catalysts have shown great potential in efficiently electro-converting O2 to H2O2 with high selectivity. However, the impact of coordination environment and introduction of extra metallic aggregates on catalytic performance still remains unclear. Herein, first a series of carbon-based catalysts with embedded coupling Ni single atomic sites and corresponding metallic nanoparticles at adjacent geometry is synthesized. Careful performance evaluation reveals NiSA/NiNP-NSCNT catalyst with precisely controlled active centers of synergetic adjacent Ni-N4S single sites and crystalline Ni nanoparticles exhibits a high H2O2 selectivity over 92.7% within a wide potential range (maximum selectivity can reach 98.4%). Theoretical studies uncover that spatially coupling single atomic NiN4S sites with metallic Ni aggregates in close proximity can optimize the adsorption behavior of key intermediates *OOH to achieve a nearly ideal binding strength, which thus affording a kinetically favorable pathway for H2O2 production. This strategy of manipulating the interaction between single atoms and metallic aggregates offers a promising direction to design new high-performance catalysts for practical H2O2 electrosynthesis.

Tailoring Oxygen Reduction Reaction Kinetics of Fe-N-C Catalyst via Spin Manipulation for Efficient Zinc-Air Batteries

The interaction between oxygen species and metal sites of various orbitals exhibits intimate correlation with the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) kinetics. Herein, a new approach for boosting the inherent ORR activity of atomically dispersed Fe-N-C matrix is represented by implanting Fe atomic clusters nearby. The as-prepared catalyst delivers excellent ORR activity with half-wave potentials of 0.78 and 0.90 V in acidic and alkaline solutions, respectively. The decent ORR activity can also be validated from the high-performance rechargeable Zn-air battery. The experiments and density functional theory calculations reveal that the electron spin-state of monodispersed Fe active sites is transferred from the low spin (LS, t2g 6 eg 0) to the medium spin (MS, t2g 5 eg 1) due to the involvement of Fe atomic clusters, leading to the spin electron filling in σ∗ orbit, by which it favors OH- desorption and in turn boosts the reaction kinetics of the rate-determining step. This work paves a solid way for rational design of high-performance Fe-based single atom catalysts through spin manipulation.

Surface Engineered Single-atom Systems for Energy Conversion

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) are demonstrated to show exceptional reactivity and selectivity in catalytic reactions by effectively utilizing metal species, making them a favorable choice among the different active materials for energy conversion. However, SACs are still in the early stages of energy conversion, and problems like agglomeration and low energy conversion efficiency are hampering their practical applications. Substantial research focus on support modifications, which are vital for SAC reactivity and stability due to the intimate relationship between metal atoms and support. In this review, a category of supports and a variety of surface engineering strategies employed in SA systems are summarized, including surface site engineering (heteroatom doping, vacancy introducing, surface groups grafting, and coordination tunning) and surface structure engineering (size/morphology control, cocatalyst deposition, facet engineering, and crystallinity control). Also, the merits of support surface engineering in single-atom systems are systematically introduced. Highlights are the comprehensive summary and discussions on the utilization of surface-engineered SACs in diversified energy conversion applications including photocatalysis, electrocatalysis, thermocatalysis, and energy conversion devices. At the end of this review, the potential and obstacles of using surface-engineered SACs in the field of energy conversion are discussed. This review aims to guide the rational design and manipulation of SACs for target-specific applications by capitalizing on the characteristic benefits of support surface engineering.

Engineering Symmetry-Breaking Centers and d-Orbital Modulation in Triatomic Catalysts for Zinc-Air Batteries

Unraveling the configuration-activity relationship and synergistic enhancement mechanism (such as real active center, electron spin-state, and d-orbital energy level) for triatomic catalysts, as well as their intrinsically bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysis, is a great challenge. Here we present a triatomic catalyst (TAC) with a trinuclear active structure that displays extraordinary oxygen electrocatalysis for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), greatly outperforming the counterpart of single-atom and diatomic catalysts. The aqueous Zn-air battery (ZAB) equipped with a TAC-based cathode exhibits extraordinary rechargeable stability and ultrarobust cycling performance (1970 h/3940 cycles at 2 mA cm-2, 125 h/250 cycles at 10 mA cm-2 with negligible voltage decay), and the quasi-solid-state ZAB displays outstanding rechargeability and low-temperature adaptability (300 h/1800 cycles at 2 mA cm-2 at -60 °C), outperforming other state-of-the-art ZABs. The experimental and theoretical analyses reveal the symmetry-breaking CoN4 configuration under incorporation of neighboring metal atoms (Fe and Cu), which leads to d-orbital modulation, a low-shift d band center, weakened binding strength to the oxygen intermediates, and decreased energy barrier for bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysis. This rational tricoordination design as well as an in-depth mechanism analysis indicate that hetero-TACs can be promisingly applied in various electrocatalysis applications.

Stable Mg Single-Atom Solid Base Catalysts Anchored on Metal-Organic Framework-Derived Nitrogen-Doped Carbon

Solid base catalysts are widely used in the chemical industry owing to their advantages of environmental friendliness and easy separation. However, their application is limited by basic site aggregation and poor stability. In this study, we report the preparation of magnesium (Mg) single-atom catalysts with high activity and stability by a sublimation-trapping strategy. The Mg net was sublimated as Mg vapor at 620 °C, subsequently transported through argon, and finally trapped on the defects of nitrogen-doped carbon derived from metal-organic framework ZIF-8, producing Mg1/NC. Because of the atomically dispersed Mg sites, the obtained Mg1/NC exhibits high catalytic activity and stability for Knoevenagel condensation of benzaldehyde with malononitrile, which is a typical base-catalyzed reaction. The Mg1/NC catalyst achieves a high efficiency with a turnover frequency of 49.6 h-1, which is much better than that of the traditional counterpart MgO/NC (7.7 h-1). In particular, the activity of Mg1/NC shows no decrease after five catalytic cycles, while that of MgO/NC declines due to the instability of basic sites.

Diatomic catalysts for Fenton and Fenton-like reactions: a promising platform for designing/regulating reaction pathways

The optimization of the single-atom catalyst (SAC) performance has been the hot spot for years. It is widely acknowledged that the incorporation of adjacent single-atom sites (diatomic catalysts (DACs)) can enable synergistic effects, which can be used in cascade catalysis, dual-function catalysis, and performance regulation of intrinsic active sites. DACs have been widely applied in the CO₂ reduction reaction (CO₂RR), oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), etc.; however, their application is limited in Fenton or Fenton-like reactions. This perspective summarizes the most advanced achievements in this field, followed by the proposed opportunities in further research, including regulation of the magnetic moment, inter-atomic distance effect, strain engineering, atomic cluster (AC)/nanoparticle (NP) modification, etc. It is demonstrated that this perspective can contribute to the DAC application in Fenton or Fenton-like reactions with innovative design and mechanisms being put forward.
