Nanoscale Titanium Surface Engineering via Low-Temperature Hydrothermal Etching for Enhanced Antimicrobial Properties

Bioinspired nanotopography artificially fabricated on titanium surfaces offers a solution for the rising issue of postoperative infections within orthopedics. On a small scale, hydrothermal etching has proven to deliver an effective antimicrobial nanospike surface. However, translation to an industrial setting is limited by the elevated synthesis temperature (150 °C) and associated equipment requirements. Here, for the first time, we fabricate surface nanostructures using comparatively milder synthesis temperatures (75 °C), which deliver physicochemical properties and antimicrobial capability comparable to the high-temperature surface. Using a KOH etchant, the simultaneous formation of titania and titanate crystals at both temperatures produces a one-dimensional nanostructure array. Analysis indicated that the formation mechanism comprises dissolution and reprecipitation processes, identifying the deposited titanates as hydrated layered tetra-titanates (K2Ti4O9·nH2O). A proposed nanospike formation mechanism was confirmed through the identification of a core and outer shell for individual nanostructures, primarily comprised of titanates and titania, respectively. Etching conditions dictated crystalline formation, favoring a thicker titanate core for nanorods under higher synthesis temperatures and etchant concentrations. A bactericidal investigation showed the efficacy against Gram-negative bacteria for a representative low-temperature nanosurface (34.4 ± 14.4%) was comparable to the higher temperature nanosurface (34.0 ± 17.0%), illustrating the potential of low-temperature hydrothermal synthesis. Our results provide valuable insight into the applicability of low-temperature etching protocols that are more favorable in large-scale manufacturing settings.

Controllable Synthesis of ZnO Nanoparticles with Improved Photocatalytic Performance for the Degradation of Rhodamine B under Ultraviolet Light Irradiation

In this work, two-dimensional (2D) Zn-HMT (Zn(NO₃)₂(HMT)₂(H₂O)₂]_n) nanosheets were synthesized using a facile one-step chemical precipitation in the presence of Zn(NO₃)₂, hexamine (HMT), and anhydrous ethanol at room temperature. Subsequently, hexagonal Tx-ZnO (Tx-ZnO refers to the zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles) were synthesized by a high-temperature solid-phase method at different temperatures (x = 500, 550, 600, 650, 700, 750, and 800 °C) nanoparticles with different morphologies were synthesized by a high-temperature calcination approach using 2D Zn-HMT nanosheets as precursor. The crystal structure, morphology, specific surface areas, surface and interface properties, optical properties, and charge migration behaviors of the as-synthesized Tx-ZnO nanoparticles were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution TEM (HRTEM), automatic specific surface and aperture analyzer, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), UV-visible spectrophotometer, photoluminescence (PL) spectra, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The photocatalytic performances and stabilities of the as-synthesized typical Tx-ZnO nanoparticles with various morphologies were evaluated and compared with the commercial ZnO (CM-ZnO) nanoparticle. The T700-ZnO nanoparticle with spherical and irregular morphology exhibited the highest photocatalytic activity (99.12%) for the degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB), compared to T500-ZnO (92.32%), T600-ZnO (90.65%), T800-ZnO (44.04%), and the CM-ZnO (88.38%) nanoparticle, which can be attributed to the cooperative effects of higher crystallinity, bigger crystal size, the strongest separation efficiency, the lowest recombination rate, the fastest charge carrier transfer path, and the highest charge-transfer efficiency. The superior photocatalytic activity illustrated by the T700-ZnO nanoparticle makes it have potential application prospects for the treatment of organic wastewater.

Photocatalytic Carbon Dioxide Conversion by Structurally and Materially Modified Titanium Dioxide Nanostructures

TiO₂ has aroused considerable attentions as a promising photocatalytic material for decades due to its superior material properties in several fields such as energy and environment. However, the main dilemmas are its wide bandgap (3–3.2 eV), that restricts the light absorption in limited light wavelength region, and the comparatively high charge carrier recombination rate of TiO₂, is a hurdle for efficient photocatalytic CO₂ conversion. To tackle these problems, lots of researches have been implemented relating to structural and material modification to improve their material, optical, and electrical properties for more efficient photocatalytic CO₂ conversion. Recent studies illustrate that crystal facet engineering could broaden the performance of the photocatalysts. As same as for nanostructures which have advantages such as improved light absorption, high surface area, directional charge transport, and efficient charge separation. Moreover, strategies such as doping, junction formation, and hydrogenation have resulted in a promoted photocatalytic performance. Such strategies can markedly change the electronic structure that lies behind the enhancement of the solar spectrum harnessing. In this review, we summarize the works that have been carried out for the enhancement of photocatalytic CO₂ conversion by material and structural modification of TiO₂ and TiO₂-based photocatalytic system. Moreover, we discuss several strategies for synthesis and design of TiO₂ photocatalysts for efficient CO₂ conversion by nanostructure, structure design of photocatalysts, and material modification.

Microflowery, Microspherical, and Fan-Shaped TiO2 Crystals via Hierarchical Self-Assembly of Nanorods with Exposed Specific Crystal Facets and Enhanced Photocatalytic Performance

In this paper, khaki titanium dioxide (TiO2) crystals via hierarchical self-assembly of nanorods with different morphologies and specific exposed crystal facets were prepared for the first time by using a TiCl3 treatment process in the presence and absence of morphology-controlling agents. The crystal structure, morphology, microstructure, specific surface area, and separation efficiency of photogenerated electron-hole pairs of the synthesized TiO2 crystals were characterized. The photocatalytic and recycled performances of the synthesized TiO2 crystals in the presence of shape-controlling agents, such as ammonium sulfate (AS), ammonium carbonate (AC), and urea, and the absence of shape-controlling agents (the obtained TiO2 crystals were expressed as AS-TiO2, AC-TiO2, urea-TiO2, and No-TiO2, respectively) were evaluated and compared with the commercial TiO2 (CM-TiO2) crystals. The AS-TiO2 microspheres with exposed uncertain facets exhibited enhanced photocatalytic activity for the degradation of methylene blue solution, which can be attributed to the combined effect of the anatase phase structure, relatively larger specific surface area, and the effective separation of the photogenerated electron-holes.

An overview on non-spherical semiconductors for heterogeneous photocatalytic degradation of organic water contaminants

Because of their carcinogenicity and mutagenicity, the elimination of organic contaminants from surface and subsurface water is a subject of environmental significance. Conventional water decontamination approaches such as membrane separation, ultrafiltration, adsorption, reverse osmosis, coagulation, etc., have relatively higher operating costs and can generate highly toxic secondary contaminants. On the other hand, heterogeneous photocatalysis, an advanced oxidation process (AOP), is considered a clean and cost-effective process for organic pollutants degradation. Owing to their distinctive structure and physicochemical properties non-spherical semiconductors have gained considerable limelight in the photocatalytic degradation of organic contaminants. The current review briefly introduces a wide range of organic water contaminants. Recent advances in non-spherical semiconductor assembly and their photocatalytic degradation applications are highlighted. The underlying mechanism, fundamentals of photocatalytic reactions, and the factors affecting the degradation performance are also alluded including the current challenges and future research perspectives.

Highly crystalline anatase TiO2 nanocuboids as an efficient photocatalyst for hydrogen generation

Highly crystalline anatase titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanocuboids were synthesized via a hydrothermal method using ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid as a capping agent. The structural study revealed the nanocrystalline nature of anatase TiO2 nanocuboids. Morphological study indicates the formation of cuboid shaped particles with thickness of ∼5 nm and size in the range of 10-40 nm. The UV-visible absorbance spectra of TiO2 nanocuboids showed a broad absorption with a tail in the visible-light region which is attributed to the incorporation of nitrogen atoms into the interstitial positions of the TiO2 lattice as well as the formation of carbonaceous and carbonate species on the surface of TiO2 nanocuboids. The specific surface areas of prepared TiO2 nanocuboids were found to be in the range of 85.7-122.9 m2 g-1. The formation mechanism of the TiO2 nanocuboids has also been investigated. Furthermore, the photocatalytic activities of the as-prepared TiO2 nanocuboids were evaluated for H2 generation via water splitting under UV-vis light irradiation and compared with the commercial anatase TiO2. TiO2 nanocuboids obtained at 200 °C after 48 h exhibited higher photocatalytic activity (3866.44 μmol h-1 g-1) than that of commercial anatase TiO2 (831.30 μmol h-1 g-1). The enhanced photoactivity of TiO2 nanocuboids may be due to the high specific surface area, good crystallinity, extended light absorption in the visible region and efficient charge separation.
