Thieno[3,2-b]pyrrole and Benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole Donor-Acceptor Semiconductors for Organic Field-Effect Transistors

Two p-type donor-acceptor (D-A) semiconducting small molecules were synthesized to investigate the effect of the backbone curvature on the organic field-effect transistor performance. The backbone curvature of the donor-acceptor small molecules was modified by changing the spacer group from bithiophene to thienothiophene. Bithiophene to thienothiophene spacer groups were placed between 4H-thieno[3,2-b]pyrrole (donor) and benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole (acceptor) to generate TP-BT4T-TP and TP-BT2TT-TP donor-acceptor molecules. A good charge carrier mobility of 2.59 × 10-2 cm2 V-1 s-1 was measured for the curved molecule (TP-BT4T-TP), while the linear molecule analog (TP-BT2TT-TP) only gave a low mobility of 5.41 × 10-5 cm2 V-1 s-1 after annealing at 120 °C in bottom-contact bottom-gate devices. Out-of-plane grazing-incidence X-ray diffraction analysis revealed more drastic thermally induced crystallinity for TP-BT4T-TP as compared to TP-BT2TT-TP, explaining the difference observed in the performance of devices fabricated from each molecule.

Intrinsically distinct hole and electron transport in conjugated polymers controlled by intra and intermolecular interactions

It is still a matter of controversy whether the relative difference in hole and electron transport in solution-processed organic semiconductors is either due to intrinsic properties linked to chemical and solid-state structure or to extrinsic factors, as device architecture. We here isolate the intrinsic factors affecting either electron or hole transport within the same film microstructure of a model copolymer semiconductor. Relatively, holes predominantly bleach inter-chain interactions with H-type electronic coupling character, while electrons' relaxation more strongly involves intra-chain interactions with J-type character. Holes and electrons mobility correlates with the presence of a charge transfer state, while their ratio is a function of the relative content of intra- and inter-molecular interactions. Such fundamental observation, revealing the specific role of the ground-state intra- and inter-molecular coupling in selectively assisting charge transport, allows predicting a more favorable hole or electron transport already from screening the polymer film ground state optical properties.

Regioregularity and Electron Deficiency Control of Unsymmetric Diketopyrrolopyrrole Copolymers for Organic Photovoltaics

Manipulating the electron deficiency and controlling the regioregularity of π-conjugated polymers are important for the fine-tuning of their electronic and electrochemical properties to make them suitable for an organic solar cell. Here, we report such a molecular design of unsymmetric diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) based copolymers with different aromatic side units of either thiophene (Th), pyridine (Py), or fluorobenzene (FBz). The unsymmetric electron acceptors of Th-DPP-Py and Th-DPP-FBz were polymerized with the electron donor of two-dimensional benzobisthiophene (BDT-Th), affording two regiorandom DPP copolymers. They exhibited contrasting molecular orbital levels and bulk heterojunction morphology in methanofullerene-blended films, leading to power conversion efficiencies of 3.75 and 0.18%, respectively. We further synthesized a regioregular DPP copolymer via sandwiching the centrosymmetric BDT-Th unit by two Th-DPP-Py units in an axisymmetric manner. The extensive characterization through morphology observation, X-ray diffraction, and space-charge-limited current mobilities highlight the case-dependent positive/negative effects of regioregularity and electron deficiency control.

Exploring Alkyl Chains in Benzobisthiazole-Naphthobisthiadiazole Polymers: Impact on Solar-Cell Performance, Crystalline Structures, and Optoelectronics

The shapes and lengths of the alkyl chains of conjugated polymers greatly affect the efficiencies of organic photovoltaic devices. This often results in a trade-off between solubility and self-organizing behavior; however, each material has specific optimal chains. Here we report on the effect of alkyl side chains on the film morphologies, crystallinities, and optoelectronic properties of new benzobisthiazole-naphthobisthiadiazole (PBBT-NTz) polymers. The power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of linear-branched and all-branched polymers range from 2.5% to 6.6%; the variations in these PCEs are investigated by atomic force microscopy, two-dimensional X-ray diffraction (2D-GIXRD), and transient photoconductivity techniques. The best-performing linear-branched polymer, bearing dodecyl and decyltetradecyl chains (C12-DT), exhibits nanometer-scale fibers along with the highest crystallinity, comprising predominant edge-on and partial face-on orientations. This morphology leads to the highest photoconductivity and the longest carrier lifetime. These results highlight the importance of long alkyl chains for inducing intermolecular stacking, which is in contrast to observations made for analogous previously reported polymers.

Recent Advances in Wide-Bandgap Photovoltaic Polymers

The past decade has witnessed significant advances in the field of organic solar cells (OSCs). Ongoing improvements in the power conversion efficiency of OSCs have been achieved, which were mainly attributed to the design and synthesis of novel conjugated polymers with different architectures and functional moieties. Among various conjugated polymers, the development of wide-bandgap (WBG) polymers has received less attention than that of low-bandgap and medium-bandgap polymers. Here, we briefly summarize recent advances in WBG polymers and their applications in organic photovoltaic (PV) devices, such as tandem, ternary, and non-fullerene solar cells. Addtionally, we also dissuss the application of high open-circuit voltage tandem solar cells in PV-driven electrochemical water dissociation. We mainly focus on the molecular design strategies, the structure-property correlations, and the photovoltaic performance of these WBG polymers. Finally, we extract empirical regularities and provide invigorating perspectives on the future development of WBG photovoltaic materials.

Regioisomer effects of [70]PCBM on film structures and photovoltaic properties of composite films with a crystalline conjugated polymer P3HT

The β-isomer of [70]PCBM induced a face-on P3HT packing, resulting in the superior hole mobility and photovoltaic properties.

Homo-Tandem Polymer Solar Cells with VOC >1.8 V for Efficient PV-Driven Water Splitting

Efficient homo-tandem and triple-junction polymer solar cells are constructed by stacking identical subcells composed of the wide-bandgap polymer PBDTTPD, achieving power conversion efficiencies >8% paralleled by open-circuit voltages >1.8 V. The high-voltage homo-tandem is used to demonstrate PV-driven electrochemical water splitting with an estimated solar-to-hydrogen conversion efficiency of ≈6%.
