The effect of treatment temperature on corrosion resistance and hydrophilicity of an ionic liquid coating for Mg-based stents

Exploring the Effect Mechanism of Alkyl Chain Lengths on the Tribological Performance of Ionic Liquids

In this work, four kinds of imidazole phosphate ionic liquids (ILs) with different anionic and cationic alkyl chain lengths were synthesized. The physicochemical properties and tribological performance of ILs were evaluated. The experimental results revealed that the tribological properties of ILs were positively correlated with the cationic chain length and negatively correlated with the anionic chain length. The effect mechanism can be summarized in two aspects: on the one hand, anions with shorter alkyl chain lengths possess stronger adsorption performance and better film forming ability on the friction pair surfaces, which makes the ILs form more robust and stable lubricating film; on the other hand, ILs with longer cationic alkyl chain lengths possess milder tribo-chemical reactions, which can effectively enhance the tribological performance and decrease the corrosion wear.

Design and Fabrication of a Sandwichlike Zn/Cu/Al-Zr Coating for Superior Anticorrosive Protection Performance of ZM5 Mg Alloy

A new three-layered film was fabricated on magnesium (Mg) alloy via electroplating to guard against corrosion in a chloride aqueous environment, which consisted of an underlying double-layered zinc/copper (Zn/Cu) and a top aluminum-zirconium (Al-Zr) layer. The Zn/Cu underlayers not only impeded the galvanic corrosion between the Al-Zr coating and Mg alloy but also improved the adhesive ability between the substrate and the upper Al-Zr layer. Herein, we discussed the nucleus sizes of Al-Zr coatings at the stage of nucleation carried out with different contents of ZrCl₄ in AlCl₃-1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ionic liquid. The sandwichlike three-layered Zn/Cu/Al-Zr coatings were systematically investigated by surface morphology, phase structure, hardness, anticorrosion performances, and first-principles calculations. The corrosion current density declined from 1.461 × 10^-3 A·cm^-2 of bare Mg to 4.140 × 10^-7 A·cm^-2 of the Zn/Cu/Al-Zr3 sample. Neutral salt spray testing demonstrated that the Zn/Cu/Al-Zr3 sample showed no evident signs of corrosion after 6 days of exposure. The enhancement of the corrosion protection property was related to the fact that the application of the Cu layer changed the corrosion direction from initial longitudinal corrosion to extended lateral corrosion and the top Al-Zr coating hindered the transmission of aggressive ions. In addition, upon increasing the Zr content in the alloy films, the Fermi energy reduced initially and then increased. The Al-Zr3 alloy with 8.3 atom % Zr showed the lowest Fermi energy (-3.0823 eV), which exhibited the most efficient corrosion protection. These results showed that the prepared three-layered coating provided reliable corrosion protection to Mg alloy and may thus promote its practical applications.

Formation and In Vitro Evaluation of a Deep Eutectic Solvent Conversion Film on Biodegradable Magnesium Alloy

The chemical conversion films from deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have recently been shown to reduce the corrosion rate of magnesium alloys, which are recognized as a kind of promising materials applied in the human body. However, the biocompatibility of the conversion films has not been investigated. This study proposes an uncommon DES system composed of lithium chloride and urea to fabricate the chemical conversion films on Mg and its alloy. The fabrication process of the conversion film is facile, which is performed by the heat treatment of the substrate in the DES at about 200 °C for 30 min. It is found that the thermal decomposition of the DES can release hydrogen, which diffuses into the Mg substrate to form MgH₂-based conversion films. The DES conversion film possesses a porous structure on pure Mg, whereas it becomes dense on the alloy with some cracks. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy shows that MgCO₃ and oxides also exist in the DES conversion films, which depends on the substrate. Electrochemical corrosion test and in vitro biocompatibility tests, including hemolysis, cytotoxicity, antibacterial, and cytoskeleton staining experiments, are performed in a simulated body environment, which shows that the corrosion resistance and biocompatibility of the substrates have been improved significantly. We expect that the DES heat treatment method will be applied to the fabrication of corrosion-resistant and biocompatible surfaces for biodegradable Mg alloys.

Mg-MOF-74/MgF₂ Composite Coating for Improving the Properties of Magnesium Alloy Implants: Hydrophilicity and Corrosion Resistance

Surface modification on Mg alloys is highly promising for their application in the field of bone repair. In this study, a new metal–organic framework/MgF₂ (Mg-MOF-74/MgF₂) composite coating was prepared on the surface of AZ31B Mg alloy via pre-treatment of hydrofluoric acid and in situ hydrothermal synthesis methods. The surface topography of the composite coating is compact and homogeneous, and Mg-MOF-74 has good crystallinity. The corrosion resistance of this composite coating was investigated through Tafel polarization test and immersion test in simulated body fluid at 37 °C. It was found that Mg-MOF-74/MgF₂ composite coating significantly slowed down the corrosion rate of Mg alloy. Additionally, Mg-MOF-74/MgF₂ composite coating expresses super-hydrophilicity with the water contact angle of nearly 0°. In conclusion, on the basis of MgF₂ anticorrosive coating, the introduction of Mg-MOF-74 further improves the biological property of Mg alloys. At last, we propose that the hydrophilicity of the composite coating is mainly owing to the large number of hydroxyl groups, the high specific surface area of Mg-MOF-74, and the rough coating produced by Mg-MOF-74 particles. Hence, Mg-MOF-74 has a great advantage in enhancing the hydrophilicity of Mg alloy surface.

Bio-Functional Design, Application and Trends in Metallic Biomaterials

Introduction of metals as biomaterials has been known for a long time. In the early development, sufficient strength and suitable mechanical properties were the main considerations for metal implants. With the development of new generations of biomaterials, the concepts of bioactive and biodegradable materials were proposed. Biological function design is very import for metal implants in biomedical applications. Three crucial design criteria are summarized for developing metal implants: (1) mechanical properties that mimic the host tissues; (2) sufficient bioactivities to form bio-bonding between implants and surrounding tissues; and (3) a degradation rate that matches tissue regeneration and biodegradability. This article reviews the development of metal implants and their applications in biomedical engineering. Development trends and future perspectives of metallic biomaterials are also discussed.
