Abstract
Tautomerism has an impact on many of the processes in chemical information management systems including novelty checking during registration into chemical structure databases; storage of structures; exact and substructure searching in chemical structure databases; and depiction of structures retrieved by a search. The approaches taken by 27 different software vendors and database producers are compared. It is hoped that this comparison will act as a discussion document that could ultimately improve databases and software for researchers in the future.

Abstract
An NMR study of the diaxial/diequatorial chair equilibrium in a range of silylated derivatives of trans-1,4- and trans-1,2-dihydroxycyclohexane is reported and discussed with a view to explaining unusually large populations of chair conformations with axial substituents, noted previously for some monosilyloxycyclohexanes and in some silylated sugars. X-ray diffraction studies of three bis-triphenylsilyloxycyclohexanes are reported and show both axial and equatorial silyloxy groups with the exocyclic bonds eclipsed. Eclipsing is also suggested by molecular mechanics (MM3) calculations on such derivatives. Both axial and equatorial tertiary silyl groups have 1,3-repulsive interactions with whatever substituents or hydrogen atoms are at the two adjacent equatorial positions, and these are relieved by rotation toward the eclipsed conformation of the exocyclic C-O bond. The three substituents on silicon interact attractively with the nine atoms at the 3, 4, and 5-positions of the cyclohexane ring and calculations suggest that these stabilizing interactions are significantly greater in the axial than in the equatorial conformation. An equatorial C-OSiR(3) bond with one or two equatorial neighbors has a restricted potential energy well that becomes much broader when the bond is axial without any equatorial neighbors in the alternative chair. Adjacent silyl groups in the 1,2-disubstituted series interact in a stabilizing way overall in all conformations, this being particularly marked in the diaxial conformation of the more complex ethers. These factors lead to unusually large axial populations.

Abstract
The stereochemistry of the dimers (3 and 4) of camphorketene (2) have been determined. The crystal structures of 3, 20 and of related compounds show ground-state distortions that are interpreted as prefiguring planar, pseudopericyclic transition states for retro-cycloadditions to form alpha-oxoketenes. The B3LYP/6-31G* optimized geometry for the transition structure (10) for the dimerization of s-Z-formylketene (8) is consistent with this mechanism. Trapping of 2 with alcohols shows selectivity comparable to other alpha-oxoketenes. The lack of reaction of 2 with benzaldehyde and the lack of enol tautomers in camphoric acid derivatives is attributed to angle strain in the bicyclic camphor moiety.

Abstract
Methods for precise yet usable descriptions of virtually any topic are essential, especially for identification of chemical compounds and materials. Systematic nomenclature and precise chemical structures, if known, are the ultimate in description of chemical compounds. However, there has always been a pervasive need for brief, yet precise methods to register chemical compounds for use in both indexing and retrieval of additional information. The most predominant chemical registration system is the Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) Registry System, begun in 1965. The history and use of this system will be described, and its importance to a number of disciplines, not just chemistry, will be described.

Abstract
Treatment of complex V(N-2,6-(i)Pr(2)C(6)H(3))Cl(3) with 1,2-dimethoxyethane (dme) gives in quasi-quantitative yield the adduct V(N-2,6-(i)Pr(2)C(6)H(3))Cl(3)(dme) (1). Interaction of 1 with bidentate phosphines gives V(N-2,6-(i)Pr(2)C(6)H(3))Cl(3)(P-P) (P-P = depe, 2a; dppe, 2b) compounds. An X-ray analysis (monoclinic, space group P2(1)/c, a = 14.7387(14) Å, b = 10.6738(10) Å, c = 16.999(3) Å, beta = 90.954(2) degrees, Z = 4, R = 0.0544), carried out on complex 2a, shows a mer arrangement of the chloride ligands and a nonsymmetrical coordination of the diphosphine ligand. One of the phosphorus atoms occupies the trans position with respect to the organoimido ligand. MO calculations on the models V(NR)Cl(3)(H(2)PCH(2)CH(2)PH(2)) (R = H, C(6)H(5)) of complex 2a were performed. The mer isomer, which is more stable than the fac isomer, shows good agreement with the experimental data.
