Abstract
A metal-free method is developed to perform the synthesis of urea derivatives utilizing CO2 as the C1 building block at atmospheric pressure and room temperature. In addition to diverse symmetric and dissymmetric ureas, benzimidazolones and quinazolinone can also be easily prepared using this protocol. Most importantly, the gram-scale preparation of fungicide pencycuron and antipsychotic drug pimavanserin proceeded smoothly under the mild conditions.

Abstract
Ionic liquids (ILs) consisting entirely of ions exhibit many fascinating and tunable properties, making them promising functional materials for a large number of energy-related applications. For example, ILs have been employed as electrolytes for electrochemical energy storage and conversion, as heat transfer fluids and phase-change materials for thermal energy transfer and storage, as solvents and/or catalysts for CO2 capture, CO2 conversion, biomass treatment and biofuel extraction, and as high-energy propellants for aerospace applications. This paper provides an extensive overview on the various energy applications of ILs and offers some thinking and viewpoints on the current challenges and emerging opportunities in each area. The basic fundamentals (structures and properties) of ILs are first introduced. Then, motivations and successful applications of ILs in the energy field are concisely outlined. Later, a detailed review of recent representative works in each area is provided. For each application, the role of ILs and their associated benefits are elaborated. Research trends and insights into the selection of ILs to achieve improved performance are analyzed as well. Challenges and future opportunities are pointed out before the paper is concluded.

Abstract
Carbonylation of ethanol with CO2 as carbonyl source into value-added esters is of considerable significance and interest, while remains of great challenge due to the harsh conditions for activation of inert CO2 in that the harsh conditions result in undesired activation of α-C-H and even cleavage of C-C bond in ethanol to deteriorate the specific activation of O-H bond. Herein, we propose a photo-thermal cooperative strategy for carbonylation of ethanol with CO2 , in which CO2 is activated to reactive CO via photo-catalysis with the assistance of *H from thermally-catalyzed dissociation of alcoholic O-H bond. To achieve this proposal, an interfacial site and oxygen vacancy both abundant SrTiCuO3-x supported Cu2 O (Cu2 O-SrTiCuO3-x ) has been designed. A production of up to 320 μmol g-1 h-1 for ethyl formate with a selectivity of 85.6 % to targeted alcoholic O-H activation has been afforded in photo-thermal assisted gas-solid process under 3.29 W cm-1 of UV/Vis light irradiation (144 °C) and 0.2 MPa CO2 . In the photo-driven activation of CO2 and following carbonylation, CO2 activation energy decreases to 12.6 kJ mol-1 , and the cleavage of alcoholic α-C-H bond has been suppressed.

Abstract
A new approach has been successfully employed to synthesize cyclic ureas via carbonylation, utilizing Boc anhydride and employing K2CO3 as a base along with N,N-dimethylformamide as the solvent. Remarkably high yields were achieved using K2CO3 in conjunction with (Boc)2O, enabling the streamlined preparation of benzimidazolones and 2-benzoxazolones within a single reaction vessel. Significantly, this approach obviates the necessity for using any dangerous reagents, rendering it environmentally friendly, and its key benefit lies in being a metal-free system. The method stands out for its efficiency, concise pathway, optimization from readily accessible starting materials, and ease of execution. The resulting benzimidazolones and 2-benzoxazolones were thoroughly characterized using techniques including LCMS, 1H NMR, and 13C NMR.

Abstract
The polymorphic structures (I and II) of 3-phenyl-1H-1,3-benzo-diazol-2(3H)-one, C13H10N2O, acquired from pentane diffusion into the solution in THF, are reported. The structures show negligible differences in bond distances and angles, but the C-N-C-C torsion angles between the backbone and the phenyl substituent, 123.02 (15)° for I and 137.18 (11)° for II, are different. Compound I features a stronger C=O⋯H-N hydrogen bond than that in II, while the structure of II exhibits a stronger π-π inter-action than in I, as confirmed by the shorter inter-centroid distance [3.3257 (8) Å in II in comparison to 3.6862 (7) Å in I]. Overall, the supra-molecular inter-actions of I and II are distinct, presumably originating from the variation in the dihedral angle.

Abstract
Experimentally conducted reactions between CO2 and various substrates (i.e., ethylenediamine (EDA), ethanolamine (ETA), ethylene glycol (EG), mercaptoethanol (ME), and ethylene dithiol (EDT)) are considered in a computational study. The reactions were previously conducted under harsh conditions utilizing toxic metal catalysts. We computationally utilize Brønsted acidic ionic liquid (IL) [Et2NH2]HSO4 as a catalyst aiming to investigate and propose 'greener' pathways for future experimental studies. Computations show that EDA is the best to fixate CO2 among the tested substrates: the nucleophilic EDA attack on CO2 is calculated to have a very small energy barrier to overcome (TS1EDA, ΔG‡ = 1.4 kcal mol-1) and form I1EDA (carbamic acid adduct). The formed intermediate is converted to cyclic urea (PEDA, imidazolidin-2-one) via ring closure and dehydration of the concerted transition state (TS2EDA, ΔG‡ = 32.8 kcal mol-1). Solvation model analysis demonstrates that nonpolar solvents (hexane, THF) are better for fixing CO2 with EDA. Attaching electron-donating and -withdrawing groups to EDA does not reduce the energy barriers. Modifying the IL via changing the anion part (HSO4-) central S atom with 6 A and 5 A group elements (Se, P, and As) shows that a Se-based IL can be utilized for the same purpose. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations reveal that the IL ion pairs can hold substrates and CO2 molecules via noncovalent interactions to ease nucleophilic attack on CO2.

Abstract
Domperidone is a powerful peripheral dopamine receptor antagonist; however, a systematic review of the synthetic methods and processes of this drug has not been reported so far. This review summarizes the synthetic strategies, synthetic routes and reaction processes of domperidone in detail. Domperidone can be synthesized from the coupling reaction of two benzimidazolone derivatives (intermediates 1 and 2). Intermediate 1 can be prepared by two synthetic routes: the cyclization of o-phenylenediamine with carbonyl reagents followed by coupling with 1,3-dihalopropane, and the coupling reaction of o-halo or o-amino substituted nitrobenzene with 1,3-disubstituted propane followed by reduction and cyclization. The latter route avoids the production of di-substituted by-products and has higher reaction selectivity. Intermediate 2 is synthesized by coupling substituted nitrobenzene with 4-aminopiperidine followed by reduction and cyclization, which is similar to the synthetic route of intermediate 1. Understanding the advantages and drawbacks of these synthetic methodologies would provide insights for the development of new strategies to prepare domperidone. Moreover, the methods used to synthesize domperidone can provide alternative approaches in the preparation of drugs or compounds with similar structure.

Abstract
A palladium-catalyzed four-component carboxylative cyclization comprising propargylic amines, aryl iodides, CO2 and CO was developed. By selecting Et3N and 1,5,7-triazabicyclo[4.4.0]dec-5-ene (TBD) as the base, respectively, both terminal and internal propargylic amines proceeded well facilitated by Pd(PPh3)2Cl2, affording the functionalized 2-oxazolones in moderate yields. This protocol enlarges the product diversity based on CO2 conversion and simultaneously provides a cooperative transformation route for both CO2 and CO.

Abstract
CeO2 acted as an effective and reusable heterogeneous catalyst for the direct synthesis of 2-imidazolidinone from ethylenediamine carbamate (EDA-CA) without further addition of CO2 in the reaction system. 2-Propanol was the best solvent among the solvents tested from the viewpoint of selectivity to 2-imidazolidinone, and the use of an adequate amount of 2-propanol provided high conversion and selectivity for the reaction. This positive effect of 2-propanol on the catalytic reaction can be explained by the solubility of EDA-CA in 2-propanol under the reaction conditions and no formation of solvent-derived byproducts. This catalytic system using the combination of the CeO2 catalyst and the 2-propanol solvent provided 2-imidazolidinone in up to 83% yield on the EDA-CA basis at 413 K under Ar. The reaction conducted under Ar showed a higher reaction rate than that with pressured CO2, which clearly demonstrated the advantage of the catalytic system operated at low CO2 pressure or even without CO2.

Abstract
ConspectusMetal-free catalysis is a promising protocol to access chemicals without metal contamination. Ionic liquids (ILs) that are entirely composed of organic cations and inorganic/organic anions have emerged as promising alternatives to molecular solvents and metal catalysts due to their unique properties such as structural tunability, the coexistence of multiple interactions among ions (e.g., electrostatic interaction, hydrogen bonding, van de Waals forces, acid/base interactions, hydrophilic/hydrophobic interactions, etc.), unique affinity for a wide range of chemicals, good chemical and thermal stability, and quite low volatility. ILs have shown potential applications in various chemical processes. In this Account, we systematically described our most recent work on IL-catalyzed approaches under metal-free conditions. The first section presents the IL-catalyzed strategies toward the transformation of CO2 to value-added chemicals, focusing on the CO2-reactive IL-catalyzed CO2 transformation to various heterocycles and the IL-catalyzed reductive transformation of CO2 to chemicals. In these approaches, we designed task-specific ILs that are able to chemically capture and activate CO2 via forming anion-based carbonate/carbamate or cation-based carboxylate/carbamate intermediates, thus further accomplishing its transformation to a series of heterocycles including quinazoline-2,4(1H,3H)-diones, cyclic carbonates, 2-oxazolidinones, oxazolones, and benzimidazolones under metal-free conditions. For the IL-catalyzed approaches to reducing CO2 with hydrosilanes to chemicals, we employed ILs capable of activating the Si-H bond in hydrosilanes and the N-H bond in amine substrates via H-bonding, thus achieving the reductive transformation of CO2 to formamides, benzimidazoles, and benzothiazoles via cooperative catalysis. The second section describes our finding on the IL-catalyzed hydration of the C≡C bond in propargylic alcohols. Azolate anion-based ILs that can chemically capture CO2 via the formation of carbamates could serve as robust nucleophiles to attack the C≡C bond in propargylic alcohols and then efficiently catalyze the hydration of propargylic alcohols to produce α-hydroxy ketones with the assistance of atmospheric CO2 gas under metal-free conditions. The third section unveils the cooperative catalysis strategy of hydrogen bond donors and acceptors of ILs for chemical reactions. In the hydrogen-bonding catalysis protocols, cations of the ILs act as H-bond donors and anions, as acceptors, forming H-bonds with the reactant molecules, respectively, in opposite ways, which can cooperatively catalyze the ring-closing C-O/C-O bond metathesis reactions of aliphatic diethers to O-heterocycles, the dehydrative etherification of alcohols to ethers, and direct oxidative esterification of alcohols to esters. We believe that these IL-catalyzed metal-free processes and strategies display promising practical applications, and their commercialization would bring great benefits to the production of the as-afforded value-added chemicals.

Abstract
A methodology employing CO2, amines, and phenylsilane was discussed to access aryl- or alkyl-substituted urea derivatives. This procedure was characterized by adopting hydrosilane to promote the formation of ureas directly, without the need to prepare silylamines in advance. Control reactions suggested that FeCl3 was a favorable additive for the generation of ureas, and this 1,5,7-triazabicyclo[4.4.0]dec-5-ene-catalyzed reaction might proceed through nucleophilic addition, silicon migration, and the subsequent formal substitution of silylcarbamate.

Abstract
The methylenation reagent 1-methylbenzimidazol-2-yl methyl sulfone 2 reacts with various aldehydes and ketones in the presence of t-BuOK (room temperature, 1 h) in dimethylformamide to give the corresponding terminal alkenes generally in high yields. For sensitive substrates, the reaction is better carried out at low temperature using sodium hexamethyldisilazide in 1,2-dimethoxyethane. The byproduct is easily removed from the products, and the reaction conditions are mild and practical. Reagent 2 can be easily prepared from commercially available 2-mercaptobenzimidazole 5 in 95% yield without any expensive reagents.

Abstract
Efficient and green strategy for the chemical conversion and fixation of CO2 is an attractive topic. In this work, we reported an efficient catalytic system of organic base coupled ionic liquids that could catalyse the synthesis of quinazolinones via cyclization of 2-aminobenzonitriles with CO2 under mild conditions (e.g., 60 °C, 0.1 MPa). It was found that 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene coupled 1-butyl-3-methylimidazole acetate ionic liquids (DBU/[Bmim][OAc]) displayed excellent performance in catalysing the reactions of CO2 with 2-aminobenzonitriles, and a series of quinazolinones were obtained in high yields at atmospheric pressure. Moreover, the ILs had high stability and reusability, and can be reused at least five times without considerable decrease in catalytic activity. This protocol could also be conducted on a gram scale, and may have promising and practical applications in the production of quinazolinones.

Abstract
Organocatalysts promote a range of C-N bond forming reactions of amines with CO2 . Herein, we review these reactions and attempt to identify the unifying features of the catalysts that allows them to promote a multitude of seemingly unrelated reactions. Analysis of the literature shows that these reactions predominantly proceed by carbamate salt formation in the form [BaseH][RR'NCOO]. The anion of the carbamate salt acts as a nucleophile in hydrosilane reductions of CO2 , internal cyclization reactions or after dehydration as an electrophile in the synthesis of urea derivatives. The reactions are enhanced by polar aprotic solvents and can be either promoted or hindered by H-bonding interactions. The predominant role of all types of organic and salt catalysts (including ionic liquids, ILs) is the stabilization of the carbamate salt, mostly by acting as a base. Catalytic enhancement depends on the combination of the amine, the base strength, the solvent, steric factors, ion pairing and H-bonding. A linear relationship between the base strength and the reaction yield has been demonstrated with IL catalysts in the synthesis of formamides and quinazoline-2,4-diones. The role of organocatalysts in the reactions indicates that all bases of sufficient strength should be able to catalyze the reactions. However, a physical limit to the extent of a purely base catalyzed reaction mechanism should exist, which needs to be identified, understood and overcome by synergistic or alternative methods.

Abstract
The first organo-catalyzed synthesis of imidazolidin-2-ones and imidazol-2-ones via intramolecular hydroamidation of propargylic ureas is reported. The phosphazene base BEMP turned out to be the most active organo-catalyst compared with guanidine and amidine bases. Excellent chemo- and regioselectivities to five-membered cyclic ureas have been achieved under ambient conditions, with a wide substrate scope and exceptionally short reaction times (down to 1 min). A base-mediated isomerization step to an allenamide intermediate is the most feasible reaction pathway to give imidazol-2-ones, as suggested by DFT studies.

Abstract
2-Imidazolidinone and its analogues are omnipresent structural motifs of pharmaceuticals, natural products, chiral auxiliaries, and intermediates in organic syntheses. Over the years, continuous efforts have been addressed to the development of sustainable and more efficient protocols for the synthesis of these heterocycles. This review gives a summary of the catalytic strategies to access imidazolidin-2-ones and benzimidazolidin-2-ones that have appeared in the literature from 2010 to 2018. Particularly important contributions beyond the timespan will be mentioned. The review is organized in four main chapters that identify the most common approaches to imidazolidin-2-one derivatives: (1) the direct incorporation of the carbonyl group into 1,2-diamines, (2) the diamination of olefins, (3) the intramolecular hydroamination of linear urea derivatives and (4) aziridine ring expansion. Methods not included in this classification will be addressed in the miscellaneous section.
