Biomass burning in the Amazon: characterization of the ionic component of aerosols generated from flaming and smoldering rainforest and savannah

Water-Soluble Inorganic Ions in Fine Particulate Emission During Forest Fires in Chinese Boreal and Subtropical Forests: An Indoor Experiment

Understanding of the characteristics of water-soluble inorganic ions (WSI) in fine particulate matter (PM2.5) emitted during forest fires has paramount importance due to their potential effect on ecosystem acidification. Thus, we investigated the emission factors (EFs) of ten most common WSI from combustion of leaves and branches of ten dominant tree species in Chinese boreal and sub-tropical forests under smoldering and flaming combustion stages using a self-designed combustion unit. The results showed that EF of PM2.5 was three times higher for the boreal (6.83 ± 0.67 g/kg) than the subtropical forest (1.97 ± 0.34 g/kg), and coniferous species emitted 1.5 times more PM2.5 (5.35 ± 0.64 g/kg) than broadleaved species (3.45 ± 0.37 g/kg). EF of total WSI was 1.27 ± 0.08 g/kg for the boreal and 1.08 ± 0.07 g/kg for the subtropical forest and 1.28 ± 0.09 and 1.07 ± 0.06 g/kg for broadleaved and coniferous species, respectively. Individual ionic species also varied significantly between forest types and species within forest types, and K+ and Cl− were the dominant ionic species in PM2.5, accounting for 25% and 30% for the boreal forest and 23% and 27% for the subtropical forest, respectively. Emissions of NO2− and SO42− were the lowest, accounting for 3% and 5% for the boreal forest and 4% for each of the subtropical forests, respectively. Combustion of leaves emitted significantly more ionic species (1.29 ± 0.05g/kg) than branches (1.05 ± 0.07 g/kg), and smoldering consistently emitted more ionic species (1.49 ± 0.09 g/kg) than flaming combustion (0.88 ± 0.03 g/kg). The cation to anion ratio was ≥1.0, suggesting that the particulate matter is neutral to alkalescent. As a whole, our findings demonstrate that forest fire in these regions may not contribute to ecosystem acidification despite the emission of a considerable amount of WSI during forest fires.

Chemical composition of fine particles in fresh smoke plumes from boreal wild-land fires in Europe

A series of smoke plumes was detected in Helsinki, Finland, during a one-month-lasting period in August 2006. The smoke plumes originated from wildfires close to Finland, and they were short-term and had a high particulate matter (PM) concentration. Physical and chemical properties of fine particles in those smokes were characterised by a wide range of real-time measurements that enabled the examination of individual plume events. Concurrently PM(1) filter samples were collected and analysed off-line. Satellite observations employing MODIS sensor on board of NASA EOS Terra satellite with the dispersion model SILAM and the Fire Assimilation System were used for evaluation of the emission fluxes from wildfires. The model predicted well the timing of the plumes but the predicted PM concentrations differed from the observed. The measurements showed that the major growth in PM concentration was caused by submicrometer particles consisting mainly of particulate organic matter (POM). POM had not totally oxidised during the transport based on the low WSOC-to-OC ratio. The fresh plumes were compared to another major smoke episode that was observed in Helsinki during April-May 2006. The duration and the source areas of the two episode periods differed. The episode in April-May was a period of nearly constantly upraised level of long-range transported PM and it was composed of aged particles when arriving in Helsinki. The two episodes had differences also in the chemical composition of PM. The mass concentrations of biomass burning tracers (levoglucosan, potassium, and oxalate) increased during both the episodes but different concentration levels of elemental carbon and potassium indicated that the episodes differed in the form of burning as well as in the burning material. In spring dry crop residue and hay from the previous season were burnt whereas in August smokes from smouldering and incomplete burning of fresh vegetation were detected.

Chemical, microphysical and optical properties of primary particles from the combustion of biomass fuels

Biomass fuel combustion for residential energy significantly influences both emissions and the atmospheric burden of aerosols in world regions, i.e., east and south Asia. This study reports measurements of climate-relevant properties of particles emitted from biomass fuels widely used for cooking in south Asia, in laboratory experiments simulating actual cooking in the region. Fuel burn rates of 1-2 kg h(-1) for wood species, and 1.5-2 kg h(-1) for crop residues and dried cattle dung, influenced PM2.5 emission factors which were 1.7-2 g kg(-1) at low burn rates but 5-9 gkg(-1) at higher burn rates. Total carbon accounted for 45-55% and ions and trace elements for 2-12% of PM2.5 mass. The elemental carbon (EC) content was variable and highest (22-35%) in particles emitted from low burn rate combustion (wood and jute stalks) but significantly lower (2-4%) from high burn rate combustion (dried cattle dung and rice straw). The mass absorption cross-section (MAC, m2 g(-1)) correlated with EC content for strongly absorbing particles. Weakly absorbing particles, from straw and dung combustion, showed absorption that could not be explained by EC content alone. On average, the MAC of biofuel emission particles was significantly higher than reported measurements from forest fires but somewhat lower than those from diesel engines, indicating potential to significantly influence atmospheric absorption. Both for a given fuel and across different fuels, increased burn rates result in higher emission rates of PM2.5, larger organic carbon (OC) content, larger average particle sizes, and lower MAC. Larger mean particle size (0.42-1.31 microm MMAD) and organic carbon content, than in emissions from combustion sources like diesels, have potential implications for hygroscopic growth and cloud nucleation behavior of these aerosols. These measurements can be used to refine regional emission inventories and derive optical parametrizations, for climate modeling, representative of regions dominated by primary particles from biomass fuel combustion.

Source profiles of particulate organic matters emitted from cereal straw burnings

Cereal straw is one of the most abundant biomass burned in China but its contribution to fine particulates is not adequately understood. In this study, three main kinds of cereal straws were collected from five grain producing areas in China. Fine particulate matters (PM2.5) from the cereal straws subjected to control burnings, both under smoldering and flaming status, were sampled by using a custom made dilution chamber and sampling system in the laboratory. Element carbon (EC) and organic carbon (OC) was analyzed. 141 compounds of organic matters were measured by gas chromatography-mass spectrum (GC-MS). Source profiles of particulate organic matters emitted from cereal straw burnings were obtained. The results indicated that organic matters contribute a large fraction in fine particulate matters. Levoglucosan had the highest contributions with averagely 4.5% in mass of fine particulates and can be considered as the tracer of biomass burnings. Methyloxylated phenols from lignin degradation also had high concentrations in PM2.5, and contained approximately equal amounts of guaiacyl and syringyl compounds. beta-Sitostrol also made up relatively a large fraction of PM2.5 compared with the other sterols (0.18%-0.63% of the total fine particle mass). Normal alkanes, PAHs, fatty acids, as well as normal alkanols had relatively lower concentrations compared with the compounds mentioned above. Carbon preference index (CPI) of normal alkanes and alkanoic acids showed characteristics of biogenic fuel burnings. Burning status significantly influenced the formations of EC and PAHs. The differences between the emission profiles of straw and wood combustions were displayed by the fingerprint compounds, which may be used to identify the contributions between wood and straw burnings in source apportionment researches.
