Stimulated leaching of metalloids along 3D-printed fractured rock vadose zone

Fractured rock aquifers are susceptible to contamination, with metal(loid)s rapidly migrating from poorly developed overburden to the fractured rock vadose zone and thus into groundwater. Compared to typical porous aquifers, retention effects within the rock matrix are small, and rapid advection along fractures leads to a higher risk of groundwater contamination. However, the highly complex anisotropic pathways of natural fractures hinder research in this field. To construct reproducible fractures, this study used 3D printing following Computed X-ray Microtomography (μCT) scans of a fractured rock collected in a natural limestone aquifer. Stimulated metalloid release was observed in the fractured rock during column leaching, and the leachate concentrations of arsenic (As) and antimony (Sb) increased by up to 17.5 and 36.4 times, respectively, compared with the porous vadose zone. Fluctuations in fracture metalloid release patterns in dissolved and adsorbed phases were attributed to retention and filtration effects induced by soil particles within fractures. Geophysical properties of the porous overburden, especially the aggregation characteristics, greatly affected the non-equilibrium leaching behavior of As, but had a limited effect on the near-equilibrium leaching of Sb, which was explored by modifying the surficial soil layer with either montmorillonite clay or charcoal. The results of this study provide a novel method and useful information for modeling and risk assessment of fractured rock aquifers.

Draft Genome Sequence of Bacillus sp. GZT, a 2,4,6-Tribromophenol-Degrading Strain Isolated from the River Sludge of an Electronic Waste-Dismantling Region

Here, we report the draft genome sequence of Bacillus sp. strain GZT, a 2,4,6-tribromophenol (TBP)-degrading bacterium previously isolated from an electronic waste-dismantling region. The draft genome sequence is 5.18 Mb and has a G+C content of 35.1%. This is the first genome report of a brominated flame retardant-degrading strain.

High-pressure injection of dissolved oxygen for hydrocarbon remediation in a fractured dolostone aquifer

A field experiment was completed at a fractured dolomite aquifer in southwestern Ontario, Canada, to assess the delivery of supersaturated dissolved oxygen (supersaturated with respect to ambient conditions) for enhanced bioremediation of petroleum hydrocarbons in groundwater. The injection lasted for 1.5h using iTi's gPro® oxygen injection technology at pressures of up to 450 kPa and at concentrations of up to 34 mg O₂/L. A three-dimensional numerical model for advective-dispersive transport of dissolved oxygen within a discretely-fractured porous medium was calibrated to the observed field conditions under a conservative (no-consumption) scenario. The simulation demonstrated that oxygen rapidly filled the local intersecting fractures as well as the porous matrix surrounding the injection well. Following injection, the local fractures were rapidly flushed by the natural groundwater flow system but slow back-diffusion ensured a relatively longer residence time in the matrix. A sensitivity analysis showed significant changes in behaviour with varying fracture apertures and hydraulic gradients. Applying the calibrated model to a 7-day continuous injection scenario showed oxygen residence times (at the 3mg/L limit), within a radius of 2-4m from the injection well, of up to 100 days. This study has demonstrated that supersaturated dissolved oxygen can be effectively delivered to this type of a fractured and porous bedrock system at concentrations and residence times potentially sufficient for enhanced aerobic biodegradation.

Environmental impact of flame retardants (persistence and biodegradability)

Flame-retardants (FR) are a group of anthropogenic environmental contaminants used at relatively high concentrations in many applications. Currently, the largest market group of FRs is the brominated flame retardants (BFRs). Many of the BFRs are considered toxic, persistent and bioaccumulative. Bioremediation of contaminated water, soil and sediments is a possible solution for the problem. However, the main problem with this approach is the lack of knowledge concerning appropriate microorganisms, biochemical pathways and operational conditions facilitating degradation of these chemicals at an acceptable rate. This paper reviews and discusses current knowledge and recent developments related to the environmental fate and impact of FRs in natural systems and in engineered treatment processes.

Retardation of organo-bromides in a fractured chalk aquitard

This study investigates the mechanisms controlling the distribution of 3-bromo-2,2-bis(bromomethyl)propanol (TBNPA) and 2,2-bis(bromomethyl)propan-1,3-diol (DBNPG) in a fractured chalk aquitard. An extensive monitoring program showed a systematic decrease in the TBNPA/DBNPG ratio with distance from the contamination source. Sorption of TBNPA on the white and/or gray chalks comprising the aquitard is approximately one order of magnitude greater than that of DBNPG. This results in more efficient removal of TBNPA from the fracture into the porous matrix and thus decreases the TBNPA/DBNPG ratio in the fracture water. Mathematical modeling of solute transport in the fracture domain illustrates the probable importance of sorption in controlling the spatial variation in TBNPA and DBNPG ratio.

Two-dimensional distribution of microbial activity and flow patterns within naturally fractured chalk

The two-dimensional distribution of flow patterns and their dynamic change due to microbial activity were investigated in naturally fractured chalk cores. Long-term biodegradation experiments were conducted in two cores ( approximately 20 cm diameter, 31 and 44 cm long), intersected by a natural fracture. 2,4,6-tribromophenol (TBP) was used as a model contaminant and as the sole carbon source for aerobic microbial activity. The transmissivity of the fractures was continuously reduced due to biomass accumulation in the fracture concurrent with TBP biodegradation. From multi-tracer experiments conducted prior to and following the microbial activity, it was found that biomass accumulation causes redistribution of the preferential flow channels. Zones of slow flow near the fracture inlet were clogged, thus further diverting the flow through zones of fast flow, which were also partially clogged. Quantitative evaluation of biodegradation and bacterial counts supported the results of the multi-tracer tests, indicating that most of the bacterial activity occurs close to the inlet. The changing flow patterns, which control the nutrient supply, resulted in variations in the concentrations of the chemical constituents (TBP, bromide and oxygen), used as indicators of biodegradation.
