Ocean sequestration of carbon dioxide: modeling the deep ocean release of a dense emulsion of liquid Co2-in-water stabilized by pulverized limestone particles

Polarisation tuneable piezo-catalytic activity of Nb-doped PZT with low Curie temperature for efficient CO2 reduction and H2 generation

The reduction of CO₂ into useful hydrocarbon chemicals has attracted significant attention in light of the depletion in fossil resources and the global demand for sustainable sources of energy. In this paper, we demonstrate piezo-catalytic electrochemical reduction of CO₂ by exploiting low Curie temperature, T _c ∼ 38 °C, Nb-doped lead zirconate titanate (PZTN) piezoelectric particulates. The large change in spontaneous polarisation of PZTN due to the acoustic pressures from to the application of ultrasound in the vicinity of the T _c creates free charges for CO₂ reduction. The effect of applied acoustic power, particulate agglomeration and the impact of T _c on piezo-catalytic performance are explored. By optimization of the piezo-catalytic effect a promising piezo-catalytic CO₂ reduction rate of 789 μmol g^-1 h^-1 is achieved, which is much larger than the those obtained from pyro-catalytic effects. This efficient and polarisation tunable piezo-catalytic route has potential to promote the development of CO₂ reduction via the utilization of vibrational energy for environmental improvement.

Superparamagnetic nanoclusters coated with oleic acid bilayers for stabilization of emulsions of water and oil at low concentration

Emulsions of water and dodecane with drop sizes down to 1 microm were stabilized with 30-100 nm interfacially active nanoclusters of sub-15 nm iron oxide primary particles at an extremely low loading of 0.14 wt.%. The nanoclusters, coated with a bilayer of oleic acid, formed stable dispersions in water at pH 7-10. The phase behavior and droplet morphologies of the emulsions of water and dodecane were tuned with pH. The oil/water emulsions at pH 9-10 were converted to middle phase emulsions at pH 6-7 and water/oil emulsions as the pH was further lowered. The magnetization per gram of Fe is similar for the nanoclusters and the primary particles, indicating the spacing between the particles is sufficient to avoid magnetic coupling. The larger volume of nanoclusters relative to the individual primary particles is beneficial for magnetomotive sensing applications including imaging of oil reservoirs, as it increases the force on the particles for a given magnetic field.

Electrochemical splitting of calcium carbonate to increase solution alkalinity: implications for mitigation of carbon dioxide and ocean acidity

Electrochemical splitting of calcium carbonate (e.g., as contained in limestone or other minerals) is explored as a means of forming dissolve hydroxides for absorbing, neutralizing, and storing carbon dioxide, and for restoring, preserving, or enhancing ocean calcification. While essentially insoluble in water, CaCO3 can be dissolved in the presence of the highly acidic anolyte of a water electrolysis cell. The resulting charged constituents, Ca2+ and C03(2-), migrate to the cathode and anode, respectively, forming Ca(OH)2 on the one hand and H2CO3 (or H2O and CO2) on the other. By maintaining a pH between 6 and 9, subsequent hydroxide reactions with CO2 primarily produce dissolved calcium bicarbonate, Ca(HCO3)2aq. Thus, for each mole of CaCO3 split there can be a net capture of up to 1 mol of CO2. Ca(HCO3)2aq is thus the carbon sequestrant that can be diluted and stored in the ocean, in natural or artificial surface water reservoirs, or underground. The theoretical work requirement for the reaction is 266 kJe per net mole CO2 consumed. Even with inefficiencies, a realized net energy expenditure lower than the preceding quantity appears possible considering energy recovery via oxidation of the H2 produced. The net process cost is estimated to be <$100/tonne CO2 mitigated. An experimental demonstration of the concept is presented, and further implementation issues are discussed.

Magnesium hydroxide extracted from a magnesium-rich mineral for CO2 sequestration in a gas-solid system

Magnesium hydroxide extracted from magnesium-bearing minerals is considered a promising agent for binding CO2 as a carbonate mineral in a gas-solid reaction. An efficient extraction route consisting of hydrothermal treatment on serpentine in HCl followed by NaOH titration for Mg(OH)2 precipitation was demonstrated. The extracted Mg(OH)2 powder had a mean crystal domain size as small as 12 nm and an apparent surface area of 54 m2/g. Under one atmosphere of 10 vol% CO2/N2, carbonation of the serpentine-derived Mg(OH)2 to 26% of the stoichiometric limit was achieved at 325 degrees C in 2 h; while carbonation of a commercially available Mg(OH)2, with a mean crystal domain size of 33 nm and an apparent surface area of 3.5 m2/g, reached only 9% of the stoichiometric limit. The amount of CO2 fixation was found to be inversely proportional to the crystal domain size of the Mg(OH)2 specimens. The experimental data strongly suggested that only a monolayer of carbonates was formed on the crystal domain boundary in the gas-solid reaction, with little penetration of the carbonates into the crystal domain.
