Conversion of azomethine moiety to carboxamido group at cobalt(III) center in model complexes of Co-containing nitrile hydratase

Dioxygen Activation by Redox-Active Bis(aldimine) Ligand Bridged Diruthenium Complex Possessing Singlet Ground State

The unexplored 'actor' behavior of redox-active bis(aldimine) congener, p-phenylene-bis(picoline)aldimine (L1), towards dioxygen activation and subsequent functionalization of its backbone was demonstrated on coordination with {Ru(acac)₂ } (acac= acetylacetonate). Reaction under aerobic condition led to the one-pot generation of dinuclear complexes with unperturbed L1, imino-carboxamido (L2^- ), and bis(carboxamido) (L3^2- )-bridged isovalent {Ru^II (μ-L1)Ru^II }, 1/ {Ru^III (μ-L3^2- )Ru^III }, 3 and mixed-valent {Ru^II (μ-L2^- )Ru^III }, 2. Authentication of the complexes along with the redox non-innocence behavior of their bridge have been validated through structure, spectroelectrochemistry and DFT calculations. Kinetic and isotope labelling experiments together with DFT analyzed transition states justified the consideration of redox shuttling at metal/L1 interface for ³ O₂ activation despite of the closed shell configuration of 1 (S=0) to give carboxamido derived 2/3.

Photocatalytic and electrocatalytic hydrogen production using nickel complexes supported by hemilabile and non-innocent ligands

Nickel complexes with non-innocent ligands generated by one-electron reduction of octahedral Schiff base nickel(ii) complexes with hemilabile ligands exhibited excellent catalytic activities of over 5000 TONs through a metal-ligand cooperation mechanism for hydrogen evolution from water under visible light irradiation.

Redox active ligand and metal cooperation for C(sp2)-H oxidation: extension of the galactose oxidase mechanism in water-mediated amide formation

Redox interplay between a ligand and a metal can provide a profound driving force for the promotion of unprecedented reactions. This work presents an intriguing water-assisted oxidative transformation of imine to amide with no formal change in the metal oxidation state in the copper and nickel complexes of an aminophenol ligand versus a zinc analogue.

Co(III) Complexes with N2S3-Type Ligands as Structural/Functional Models for the Isocyanide Hydrolysis Reaction Catalyzed by Nitrile Hydratase

It has been before reported that, in addition to hydration of nitriles, the Fe-type nitrile hydratase (NHase) also catalyzes the hydrolysis of tert-butylisocyanide ( tBuNC). In order to investigate the unique isocyanide hydrolysis by NHase, we prepared three related Co(III) model complexes, PPh₄[Co(L)] (1), PPh₄[Co(L-O₃)] (2), and PPh₄[Co(L-O₄)] (3), where L is bis( N-(2-mercapto-2-methylpropionyl)aminopropyl)sulfide. The suffixes L-O₃ and L-O₄ indicate ligands with a sulfenate and a sulfinate and with two sulfinates, respectively, instead of the two thiolates of L. The X-ray analyses of 1 and 3 reveal trigonal bipyramidal and square pyramidal structures, respectively. Complex 2, however, has five-coordinate trigonal-bipyramidal geometry with η²-type S-O coordination by a sulfenyl group. Addition of tBuNC to 1, 2, and 3 induces an absorption spectral change as a result of formation of an octahedral Co(III) complex. This interpretation is also supported by the crystal structures of PPh₄[Co(L-O₄)( tBuNC)] (4) and (PPh₄)₂[Co(L-O₄)(CN)] (5). A water molecule interacts with 3 but cannot be activated as reported previously, as demonstrated by the lack of absorption spectral change in the pH range of 5.5-10.2. Interestingly, the coordinated tBuNC is hydrolyzed by 2 and 3 at pH 10.2 to produce tBuNH₂ and CO molecule, but 1 does not react. These findings provide strong evidence that hydrolysis of tBuNC by NHase proceeds not by activation of the coordinated water molecule but by coordination of the substrate. The mechanism of the hydrolysis reaction of tBuNC is explained with support provided by DFT calculations; a positively polarized C atom of tBuNC on the Co(III) center is nucleophilically attacked by a hydroxide anion activated through an interaction of the sulfenyl/sulfinyl oxygen with the nucleophile.

Ligand transformations and efficient proton/water reduction with cobalt catalysts based on pentadentate pyridine-rich environments

A series of cobalt complexes with pentadentate pyridine-rich ligands is studied. An initial Co(II) amine complex 1 is prone to aerial oxidation yielding a Co(III) imine complex 2 that is further converted into an amide complex 4 in presence of adventitious water. Introduction of an N-methyl protecting group to the ligand inhibits this oxidation and gives rise to the Co(II) species 5. Both the Co(III) 4 and Co(II) 5 show electrocatalytic H2 generation in weakly acidic media as well as in water. Mechanisms of catalysis seem to involve the protonation of a Co(II)-H species generated in situ.

Use of metallopeptide based mimics demonstrates that the metalloprotein nitrile hydratase requires two oxidized cysteinates for catalytic activity

Nitrile hydratases (NHases) are non-heme Fe(III) or non-corrin Co(III) containing metalloenzymes that possess an N(2)S(3) ligand environment with nitrogen donors derived from amidates and sulfur donors derived from cysteinates. A closely related enzyme is thiocyanate hydrolase (SCNase), which possesses a nearly identical active-site coordination environment as CoNHase. These enzymes are redox inactive and perform hydrolytic reactions; SCNase hydrolyzes thiocyanate anions while NHase converts nitriles into amides. Herein an active CoNHase metallopeptide mimic, [Co(III)NHase-m1] (NHase-m1 = AcNH-CCDLP-CGVYD-PA-COOH), that contains Co(III) in a similar N(2)S(3) coordination environment as CoNHase is reported. [Co(III)NHase-m1] was characterized by electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), gel-permeation chromatography (GPC), Co K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (Co-S: 2.21 Å; Co-N: 1.93 Å), vibrational, and optical spectroscopies. We find that [Co(III)NHase-m1] will perform the catalytic conversion of acrylonitrile into acrylamide with up to 58 turnovers observed after 18 h at 25 °C (pH 8.0). FTIR data used in concert with calculated vibrational data (mPWPW91/aug-cc-TZVPP) demonstrates that the active form of [Co(III)NHase-m1] has a ligated SO(2) (ν = 1091 cm(-1)) moiety and a ligated protonated SO(H) (ν = 928 cm(-1)) moiety; when only one oxygenated cysteinate ligand (i.e., a mono-SO(2) coordination motif) or the bis-SO(2) coordination motif are found within [Co(III)NHase-m1] no catalytic activity is observed. Calculations of the thermodynamics of ligand exchange (B3LYP/aug-cc-TZVPP) suggest that the reason for this is that the SO(2)/SO(H) equatorial ligand motif promotes both water dissociation from the Co(III)-center and nitrile coordination to the Co(III)-center. In contrast, the under- or overoxidized motifs will either strongly favor a five coordinate Co(III)-center or strongly favor water binding to the Co(III)-center over nitrile binding.

Fe(III) and Co(III) centers with carboxamido nitrogen and modified sulfur coordination: lessons learned from nitrile hydratase

Nitrile hydratase (NHase) is a non-heme Fe(III) or non-corrinoid Co(III) metalloenzyme with an unprecedented coordination sphere comprising deprotonated carboxamido nitrogens and modified Cys-S (-SO(-) and -SO(2)(-)) sulfurs. We have synthesized model complexes derived from designed ligands that contain these donor groups. The model complexes mimic almost all the intrinsic properties of the unique M(III) (M = Fe, Co) active site of NHase. Even a functional Co(III) model has been synthesized that hydrolyzes nitriles catalytically at pH close to the optimum pH of the enzyme. Our studies have provided insight into how the unusual donor atoms dictate the overall properties of the biological M(III) sites.

Synthesis and Oxygenation of a Nickel(II) and Zinc(II) Dithiolate: An Experimental and Theoretical Comparison

The diamino-dithiolato N2S2 ligand N,N'-bis-2-methyl-mercaptopropyl-N,N'-dimethylethylenediamine, H2bmmp-dmed), and its nickel (1) and zinc (2) complexes have been prepared and their reactivities with hydrogen peroxide investigated. Complex 1 yields a mixture of sulfenato (RSO-), 4, sulfinato (RSO2-), 3, and sulfonato (RSO3-), 5, products upon addition of H2O2. Products are separable by column chromatography. Stoichiometric addition of H2O2 to 2 yields an inseparable mixture. Excess peroxide addition results in oxygenation of the ligand to the disulfonate, 6, and decomplexation of zinc. Complexes 1, 2, and 3 and compound 6 have been investigated by X-ray crystallography, and their structures are reported. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations of 1 and 2 reveal significant sulfur p character in the HOMO of each complex. However, 1 also shows significant metal d character that is pi-antibonding with respect to the sulfur p orbitals. Complex 2 shows little metal character in the HOMO. Implications of the HOMO with respect to S-centered reactivity and metal ligand distances in S-oxygenated products are provided.

Spontaneous reduction of a low-spin Fe(III) complex of a neutral pentadentate N(5) Schiff base ligand to the corresponding Fe(II) species in acetonitrile

The iron complexes of a designed pentadentate Schiff base ligand N,N-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)amine-N-ethyl-2-pyridine-2-aldimine (SBPy(3)) have been synthesized. The low-spin mononuclear Fe(III) complex [(SBPy(3))Fe(DMF)](ClO(4))(3) (2), though stable in the solid state, is spontaneously reduced to the corresponding Fe(II) species [(SBPy(3))Fe(MeCN)](2+) in MeCN. Fe(II) complex [(SBPy(3))Fe(MeCN)](BF(4))(2) (3) has been isolated independently and characterized by crystallography. Electrochemical studies indicate that SBPy(3), like other pentadentate polypyridine ligands, stabilizes the Fe(II) center to a great extent (E(1/2) = 1.01 V vs SCE in MeCN). This fact is responsible for the ready reduction of 2. It is evident that such reactivity has brought complications in the syntheses of iron complexes of polypyridine ligands reported in previous accounts. Very low solubility of 2 in MeOH has allowed isolation of analytically pure 2 in the present work. Storage of dilute methanolic solution of 2 results in the formation of the mu-oxo Fe(III) dimer [(SBPy(3))FeOFe(SBPy(3))](ClO(4))(4) (5), the structure of which has also been determined. Fe(II) complex 3 reacts with CN(-) to afford cyanide adduct [(SBPy(3))Fe(CN)](BF(4)) (4) but does not exhibit any reactivity toward NO. The azomethine moiety (CH=N-py) of 2 is rapidly oxidized by H(2)O(2) to a pyridine-2-carboxamido (C(=O)-N-py) unit and affords [(PaPy(3))Fe(MeCN)](ClO(4))(2) (1), a complex previously reported by us.

Unusual reactivity of methylene group adjacent to pyridine-2-carboxamido moiety in iron(III) and cobalt(III) complexes

The Fe(III) and Co(III) complexes of the ligand N-(2-picolyl)picolinamide (pmpH; H represents the dissociable amide hydrogen), namely, [Fe(pmp)(2)]BF(4) (1) and [Co(pmp)(2)]ClO(4) (2), have been synthesized and structurally characterized. The [bond]CH(2)[bond] moiety of pmp(-) in [M(pmp)(2)](+) (M = Fe, Co) is very reactive and is readily converted to carbonyl (C[double bond]O) group upon exposure to dioxygen. Such conversion results in [M(bpca)(2)]ClO(4) complexes (M = Fe (3), Co (5); bpcaH = bis(2-pyridylcarbonyl)amine) which have been characterized by spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. The structure of 5 is reported here for the first time. The reactivity of the [bond]CH(2)[bond] moiety of pmp(-) has so far precluded the isolation of 1 although other metal complexes of pmp(-) have been reported years ago. The CH(2) --> C[double bond]O transformation arises from the tendency of the coordinated pmp(-) ligand to achieve further conjugation in the ligand framework and provides a better way to synthesize the metal complexes of bpcaH ligand. Reaction of 3 with NaH affords Fe(II) complex [Fe(bpca)(2)] (4) without any reduction of the ligand frame.
