Abstract
The crystal structure and magnetic properties of two mononuclear iron(iii) Schiff base complexes, [FeL1(NCS)2] (1), HL1 = 2-[1-[[2-[(2-aminoethyl)amino]ethyl]imino]ethyl]phenol and [FeL2(N3)Cl] (2), HL2 = 2-(-1-(2-(2-aminoethylamino)ethylimino)ethyl)-4-methylphenol are reported. Each complex contains a Fe(iii) ion surrounded by a N3O Schiff base ligand and two NCS− ligands (in 1) or one N3− and one Cl− ligands (in 2). The magnetic properties can be well reproduced with zero field splittings in the high spin S = 5/2 Fe(iii) ions and weak intermolecular Fe–Fe interactions mediated by hydrogen bonds. This intermolecular antiferromagnetic interaction has been validated by using DFT calculations in complex 2. Moreover, the interaction energies of the H-bonded dimers in both complexes have been estimated using DFT calculations and characterized using a combination of QTAIM and NCI plot computational tools. Complexes 1 and 2 constitute two rare examples of Fe(iii) complexes with magnetic interactions through H-bonds. H-Bond mediated magnetic interactions in mononuclear iron(iii) Schiff base complexes were studied experimentally and validated by using DFT calculations. ![]()

Abstract
A novel heterometallic 1D coordination polymer [{Ni(en)2}2(micro-NCS)4Cd(NCS)2](n) x nCH3CN (en = ethylenediamine) has been prepared using the self-assembly process in a one-pot reaction of cadmium oxide, nickel and ammonium thiocyanates with an acetonitrile solution of ethylenediamine. The complex consists of an uncommon cis-Cd(SCN)4(NCS)2(4-) fragment and a rare combination of cis-Ni(en)2(2+) and trans-Ni(en)2(2+) building blocks linked by micro(1,3)-NCS bridges into a double-stranded zigzag chain structure. Each chain is comprised of [Ni2Cd2(micro-NCS-N,S)4)] macrocycles with chair-like and rectangular-like shapes arrayed alternately. The shortest intrachain CdCd separations are 9.535(1) and 10.868(2) A, while the nearest NiNi distances are 5.418(1) and 6.612(2) A. A network of weak N-HS hydrogen bonds, involving the terminal NCS ligands and NH2-groups of en, links the infinite chains and results in the formation of an extended supramolecular three-dimensional framework. Variable-temperature (1.8-300 K) magnetic susceptibilities show a slight change of the micro(B) value at low temperature, indicative of weak antiferromagnetic interactions (J = 1.55 cm-1) between magnetic canters. High-field, high-frequency (100-400 GHz) EPR spectra were simulated using S = 1 ground state for separate Ni2+ ions with the spin Hamiltonian parameters g = 2.165, D = 0.45 cm-1 and E = 0.03 cm(-1). According to DFT calculations, the D and E parameters are -0.35 cm(-1) and 0.049 cm-1 for the cis arrangement of Ni2+ and 0.58 cm(-1) and 0.012 cm(-1) for trans.

Abstract
Sterically hindered nickel- tripyrrins [Ni(trpy)X] with different di-, tri- and tetradentate anions X have been prepared with the aim of finding coordination polymers formed by self-association. The syntheses were performed by simple ligand-exchange reactions and proceeded successfully with the pseudohalides CN(-), OCN(-), SCN(-), SeCN(-), N(CN)(2) (-) (dicyanoamido, dca) and C(CN)(3) (-) (tricyanomethanido, tcm), the cyanidometallates [Ag(CN)(2)](-) and [Ni(CN)(4)](2-) and the salicylate anion (sal(-)). X-ray crystallographic analyses revealed that the complexes with cyanido and isocyanato ligands, as well as the compound with a salicylato ligand, are prototypes for structurally distinct monomeric species in the solid state, whereas one-dimensional coordination polymers or supramolecular three-dimensional networks are formed from all other combinations. The polymeric compounds display a variety of individual pillar and network architectures with functionalised pores and clefts and with the Ni(trpy) fragments in different relative orientations. Hydrogen bonding and pi stacking were found to be additional structure-directing effects, which increased the structural complexity of the system. The Ni(trpy) subunit has thus been proven to be a versatile building block for the construction of supramolecular assemblies and metal organic frameworks (MOFs) from pentacoordinate Ni(II) ions.

Abstract
Reaction of R-styreneoxide with glycine-tert-butylester yielded amino alcohols of the general formula NR1R2R3, where R1 = CH2COOtBu and R2 = R3 = 2-phenyl-2-hydroxyethyl (H2LA); R2 = 2-phenyl-2-hydroxyethyl and R3 = 1-phenyl-2-hydroxyethyl (H2LB); R2 = H and R3 = 2-phenyl-2-hydroxyethyl (HLC); and R2 = H and R3 = 1-phenyl-2-hydroxyethyl (HLD). The corresponding reaction with sarcosine-tert-butylester and subsequent hydrolysis provided the zwitterion +NH(CH3){CH2CHPh(OH)}(CH2CO2-), HLE* (asterisk refers to unprotected carboxylate). Reaction of these ligands with VO(OiPr)3 in CH2Cl2 gave the oxovanadium(V) complexes [VOL(OiPr)2] and [VOL2(OiPr)] (for LC and LD) or, when reacted in the presence of MeOH, [VOL'(OMe)], where L' represents the methyl ester of LA, LB, and LE. The crystal and molecular structures of R-HLC, S-HLD, R,S-HLE* x H2O, and lambda-[VO(R,S-LB')OMe] have been determined. The complex [VOLB'(OMe)] contains vanadium in a distorted trigonal-bipyramidal array (tau = 0.72), the oxo group in the equatorial plane, and methoxide and N in the apical positions, and thus, it structurally models the active center of vanadate-dependent haloperoxidases. The structure and the bonding parameters, including a particularly long d(V-N) of 2.562 A, are backed up by DFT calculations. The isolated oxovanadium(V) complexes and the in situ systems L + VO(OiPr)3 catalyze the oxidation, by cumylhydroperoxide HO2R', of prochiral sulfides (MeSPh, MeSp-Tol, PhSBn) to chiral sulfoxides plus some sulfone. The best results with respect to enantioselectivity (enantiomeric excess (ee) = 38%) were obtained with the system VO(OiPr)3/LA, and the best selectivity with respect to sulfoxide (100%) was obtained with [VOLA(OiPr)]. The reaction with the hexacoordinated [VO(OMe)(HOMe)LD*] was very slow. Oxidation of PhSBn is faster than that of MeSPh and MeSpTol. Turn-over numbers are up to 60 mol of sulfoxide mol-1 of catalyst h-1 (-20 degrees C). The unspectacular ee apparently is a consequence of flexibility of the active catalyst in solution, as shown by the 51V NMR of the catalysts [VOL(OR)] and the oxo-peroxo intermediates [VOL(O2R')]. As shown by DFT calculations, the peroxo ligand coordinates in the tilted end-on fashion in the axial or equatorial position (energy difference = 17.6 kJ/mol).

Abstract
A series of 2D and one 3D transition-metal-azido coordination polymers with pyridine carboxylate N-oxide, isonicotinate N-oxide (INO), and nicotinate N-oxide (NNO) as the coligands were synthesized by a hydrothermal method and structurally and magnetically characterized. These complexes have the formulas [M(L)(N3)(H2O)]n (L = INO and M = Mn, 1.Mn; Co, 2.Co; Ni, 3.Ni and L = NNO and M = Mn, 4.Mn; Co, 5.Co; Ni, 6.Ni) and [Cu(L)(N3)(H2O)(0.5)]n (L = INO, 7.Cu; NNO, 8.Cu). All complexes consist of end-on azido and syn-syn carboxylato mixed-bridged M-N(3)/COO chains that are further linked by the pyridine N-oxide group of the INO or NNO to give rise to 2D layered structures for 1.Mn, 2.Co, 3.Ni, 4.Mn, 5.Co, 6.Ni, and 8.Cu and a 3D framework for 7.Cu. The high-temperature magnetic susceptibilities are dominated by low-dimensional behavior while long-range ordering sets in at low temperatures. The Mn complexes are antiferromagnets, and the others are metamagnets. In addition, 5.Co exhibits slow magnetic relaxation behavior at low temperatures. The metamagnetism in each case is due to strong intrachain ferromagnetic interactions and weak interchain antiferromagnetic ones.

Abstract
Three new basal-apical, mu(2)-1,1-azide bridged complexes, [CuL(1)(N(3))](2) (1), [CuL(2)(N(3))](2) (2) and [CuL(3)(N(3))](2) (3) with very similar tridentate Schiff base blocking ligands [L(1) = N-(3-aminopropyl)salicylaldimine, L(2) = 7-amino-4-methyl-5-azahept-3-en-2-one and L(3) = 8-amino-4-methyl-5-azaoct-3-en-2-one) have been synthesised and their molecular structures determined by X-ray crystallography. In complex 1, there is no inter-dimer H-bonding. However, complexes 2 and 3 form two different supramolecular structures in which the dinuclear entities are linked by strong H-bonds giving one-dimensional systems. Variable-temperature (300-2 K) magnetic susceptibility measurements and magnetization measurements at 2 K reveal that complexes and have antiferromagnetic coupling while has ferromagnetic coupling which is also confirmed by EPR spectra at 4-300 K. Magnetostructural correlations have been made taking into consideration both the azido bridging ligands and the existence of intermolecular hydrogen bonds in complexes 2 and 3.
