Abstract
The present work aimed to obtain discrete heavier metal complexes of unperturbed deprotonated bis-lawsone (hinge-like H2L = 2,2'-bis(3-hydroxy-1,4-napthoquinone). This is primarily due to its limited examples with lighter metal ions (Co, Zn, and Ga) and the fact that our earlier approach with the osmium ion facilitated its functionalisation. Herein, we demonstrated the successful synthesis and structural characterisation of L2--derived diruthenium [(bpy)2RuII(μ-L2-)RuII(bpy)2](ClO4)2 [1](ClO4)2 (S = 0), (acac)2RuIII(μ-L2-)RuIII(acac)22 (S = 1) and monoruthenium (pap)2Ru(L2-) 3 (S = 0) derivatives (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine, acac = acetylacetonate, and pap = 2-phenylazopyridine). The crystal structures established that (i) O,O-/O,O- donating five-membered bis-bidentate and O-,O- donating seven-membered bidentate chelating modes of deprotonated L2- in rac (ΔΔ/ΛΛ) diastereomeric [1](ClO4)2, 2 and 3, respectively. (ii) The L2- bridging unit in [1](ClO4)2, 2 and 3 underwent twisting its two naphthoquinone rings with respect to the ring connecting C-C bond by 73.01°, 62.15° and 59.12°, respectively. (iii) Intermolecular π-π interactions (∼3.5 Å) between the neighbouring molecules. The paramagnetic complex 2 (S = 1) with two non-interacting Ru(III) (S = 1/2) ions exhibited weak antiferromagnetic coupling only at very low temperatures. In agreement with the magnetic results, 2 displayed typical RuIII-based anisotropic EPR in CH3CN (<g>/Δg: 2.314/0.564) but without any forbidden g1/2 signal at 120 K. The complexes exhibited multiple redox processes in CH3CN in the experimental potential window of ± 2.0 V versus SCE. The analysis of the redox steps via a combined experimental and theoretical (DFT/TD-DFT) approach revealed the involvement of L2- to varying extents in both the oxidative and reductive processes as a consequence of its bidirectional redox non-innocent feature. The mixing of the frontier orbitals of the metal ion and L2- due to their closeness in energy indeed led to the resonating electronic form in certain redox states instead of any precise electronic structural state.

Abstract
The four-electron oxygen reduction reaction (4e--ORR) is the mainstay in chemical energy conversion. Elucidation of factors influencing the catalyst's reaction rate and selectivity is important in the development of more active catalysts of 4e--ORR. In this study, we investigated chemical and electrochemical 4e--ORR catalyzed by Co2(μ-O2) complexes bridged by xanthene (1) and anthracene (3) and by a Co2(OH)2 complex bridged by anthraquinone (2). In the chemical ORR using Fe(CpMe)2 as a reductant in acidic PhCN, we found that 1 showed the highest initial turnover frequency (TOFinit = 6.8 × 102 s-1) and selectivity for 4e--ORR (96%) in three complexes. The detailed kinetic analyses have revealed that the rate-determining steps (RDSs) in the catalytic cycles of 1-3 have the O2 addition to [CoII2(OH2)2]4+ as an intermediate in common. In the only case that complex 1 was used as a catalyst, kcat depended on proton concentration because the reaction rate of the O2 addition to [CoII2(OH2)2]4+ was so fast as compared to that of the concerted PCET process of 1. Through X-ray, Raman, and electrochemical analyses and stoichiometric reactions, we found the face-to-face structure of 1 characterized by a slightly flexible xanthene was advantageous in capturing O2 and stabilizing the Co2(μ-O2) structure, thus increasing both the reaction rate and selectivity for 4e--ORR.

Abstract
Introducing metal ion coordination as bonding motive into polymer architectures provides new structures and properties for polymeric materials. The metal ions can be part of the backbone or of the side-chains. In the case of linear metallo-polymers the repeat unit bears at least two metal ion receptors in order to facilitate metal-ion induced self-assembly. If the binding constants are sufficiently high, macromolecular assemblies will form in a solution. Likewise, polymeric networks can be formed by metal ion induced crosslinking. The metal ion coordination sites introduce dynamic features, e.g. for self-healing or responsive materials, as well as additional functional properties including spin-crossover, electro-chromism, and reactivity. Terpyridines have attracted attention as receptors in metallo-polymers due to their favorable properties. It is well suited to assemble linear rigid-rod like metallo-polymers in case of rigid ditopic ligands. Terpyridine binds a large number of metal ions and are readily functionalized giving rise to a plethora of available ligands as components in metallo-polymers. By the judicious choice of the metal ions, the design of the ligands, the counter ions and the boundary conditions of self-assembly, the final structure and properties of the resulting metallo-polymers can be tailored at all length scales. Here, we review recent activities in the area of metallo-polymers based on terpyridines as central metal ion receptors.

Abstract
A series of ruthenium complexes [Ru(OAc)(dioxolene)(terpy)] having various substituents on the dioxolene ligand (dioxolene = 3,5-t-Bu2C6H2O2 (1), 4-t-BuC6H3O2 (2), 4-ClC6H3O2 (3), 3,5-Cl2C6H2O2 (4), Cl4C6O2 (5); terpy = 2,2':6'2' '-terpyridine) were prepared. EPR spectra of these complexes in glassy frozen solutions (CH2Cl2:MeOH = 95:5, v/v) at 20 K showed anisotropic signals with g tensor components 2.242 > g1 > 2.104, 2.097 > g2 > 2.042, and 1.951 > g3 > 1.846. An anisotropic value, Deltag = g1 - g3, and an isotropic g value, g = [(g1(2) + g2(2) + g3(2))/3]1/2, increase in the order 1 < 2 < 3 < 4 < 5. The resonance between the Ru(II)(sq) (sq = semiquinone) and Ru(III)(cat) (cat = catecholato) frameworks shifts to the latter with an increase of the number of electron-withdrawing substituents on the dioxolene ligand. DFT calculations of 1, 2, 3, and 5 also support the increase of the Ru spin density (Ru(III) character) with an increase of the number of Cl atoms on the dioxolene ligand. The singly occupied molecular orbitals (SOMOs) of 1 and 5 are very similar to each other and stretch out the Ru-dioxolene frameworks, whereas the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) of 5 is localized on Ru and two oxygen atoms of dioxolene in comparison with that of 1. Electron-withdrawing groups decrease the energy levels of both the SOMO and LUMO. In other words, an increase in the number of Cl atoms in the dioxolene ligand results in an increase of the positive charge on Ru. Successive shifts in the electronic structure between the Ru(II)(sq) and Ru(III)(cat) frameworks caused by the variation of the substituents are compatible with the experimental data.

Abstract
A palladium-catalyzed Stille coupling reaction was employed as a versatile method for the synthesis of a novel terpyridine-pincer (3, TPBr) bridging ligand, 4'-{4-BrC6H2(CH2NMe2)2-3,5}-2,2':6',2' '-terpyridine. Mononuclear species [PdX(TP)] (X = Br, Cl), [Ru(TPBr)(tpy)](PF6)2, and [Ru(TPBr)2](PF6)2, synthesized by selective metalation of the NCNBr-pincer moiety or complexation of the terpyridine of the bifunctional ligand TPBr, were used as building blocks for the preparation of heterodi- and trimetallic complexes [Ru(TPPdCl)(tpy)](PF6)2 (7) and [Ru(TPPdCl)2](PF6)2 (8). The molecular structures in the solid state of [PdBr(TP)] (4a) and [Ru(TPBr)2](PF6)2 (6) have been determined by single-crystal X-ray analysis. Electrochemical behavior and photophysical properties of the mono- and heterometallic complexes are described. All the above di- and trimetallic Ru complexes exhibit absorption bands attributable to (1)MLCT (Ru --> tpy) transitions. For the heteroleptic complexes, the transitions involving the unsubstituted tpy ligand are at a lower energy than the tpy moiety of the TPBr ligand. The absorption bands observed in the electronic spectra for TPBr and [PdCl(TP)] have been assigned with the aid of TD-DFT calculations. All complexes display weak emission both at room temperature and in a butyronitrile glass at 77 K. The considerable red shift of the emission maxima relative to the signal of the reference compound [Ru(tpy)2]2+ indicates stabilization of the luminescent 3MLCT state. For the mono- and heterometallic complexes, electrochemical and spectroscopic studies (electronic absorption and emission spectra and luminescence lifetimes recorded at room temperature and 77 K in nitrile solvents), together with the information gained from IR spectroelectrochemical studies of the dimetallic complex [Ru(TPPdSCN)(tpy)](PF6)2, are indicative of charge redistribution through the bridging ligand TPBr. The results are in line with a weak coupling between the {Ru(tpy)2} chromophoric unit and the (non)metalated NCN-pincer moiety.

Abstract
A new terpyridyl-containing Pt triad [Pt(pytpy)(p-CC-C6H4-NH-CO-C6H2(OMe)3)](PF6)2 (4), where pytpy = 4'-(4-pyridin-1-ylmethylphenyl)-[2,2';6',2' ']terpyridine and p-CC-C6H4-NH-CO-C6H2(OMe)3 = N-(4-ethynylphenyl)-3,4,5-trimethoxybenzamide, has been synthesized and structurally characterized. The related donor-chromophore dyad [Pt(ttpy)(p-CC-C6H4-NH-CO-C6H2(OMe)3)]PF6 2, where ttpy = 4'-p-tolyl-[2,2';6',2' ']terpyridine, and the chromophore-acceptor dyad [Pt(pytpy)(CCC6H5)](PF6)2 (3), where CCC6H5 = ethynylbenzene, have also been studied. The multistep syntheses culminate with a CuI-catalyzed coupling reaction of the respective acetylene with either [Pt(ttpy)Cl]PF6 or [Pt(pytpy)Cl](PF6)2. X-ray and spectroscopic studies support assignment of a distorted square planar environment around the Pt(II) ion with three of its coordination sites occupied by the terpyridyl N-donors and the fourth coordination site occupied by the acetylenic carbon. Although the parent compound [Pt(ttpy)(CCC6H5)]PF6 (1) is brightly luminescent in fluid solution at 298 K, dyad 2 as well as triad 4 exhibit complete quenching of the emission. The chromophore-acceptor (C-A) dyad 3 displays weak solution luminescence at room temperature with a phi(rel)(em) of 0.011 (using Ru(bpy)3(2+) as a standard with phi(rel)(em) = 0.062). Electrochemically, the donor-chromophore (D-C) dyad and the donor-chromophore-acceptor (D-C-A) triad exhibit both metal-based and donor ligand-based oxidations, whereas the triad and the C-A dyad show the expected pyridinium- and terpyridine-based reductions. Transient absorption studies of the dyad and triad systems indicate that although the trimethoxybenzene group acts as a reductive donor, in the present system, the pyridinium group fails to act as an acceptor.

Abstract
The complexes [M(bpy)(2)(Q)](PF(6)) (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridyl; M = Ru, Os; Q = 3,5-di-tert-butyl-N-phenyl-1,2-benzoquinonemonoimine) were isolated and studied by X and W band EPR in a dichloromethane solution at ambient temperatures and at 4 K. For M = Ru, the (14)N hyperfine splitting confirms the Ru(II)/semiquinone formulation, although at a > 1 mT, the (99,101)Ru satellite coupling is unusually high. W band EPR allowed us to determine the relatively small g anisotropy Delta g = g(1) - g(3) = 0.0665 for the ruthenium complex. The osmium analogue exhibits a much higher difference Delta g = 0.370, which is attributed not only to the larger spin-orbit coupling constant of Os versus that of Ru but also to a higher extent of metal contribution to the singly occupied molecular orbital. The difference Delta E between the oxidation and reduction potentials of the radical complexes is larger for the ruthenium compound (Delta E = 0.87 V) than for the osmium analogue (Delta E = 0.72), confirming the difference in metal/ligand interaction. The electrochemically generated states [M(bpy)(2)(Q)](n+), n = 0, 1, 2, and 3, were also characterized using UV-vis-near-infrared spectroelectrochemistry.

Abstract
A binuclear complex has been synthesized having ruthenium(ii) bis(2,2':6',2''-terpyridine) terminals attached to a central 2,2'-bipyrimidine unit via ethynylene groups. Cyclic voltammetry indicates that the substituted terpyridine is the most easily reduced subunit and the main chromophore involves charge transfer from the metal centre to this ligand. The resultant metal-to-ligand, charge-transfer (MLCT) triplet state is weakly emissive and has a lifetime of 60 ns in deoxygenated solution at room temperature. The luminescence yield and lifetime increase with decreasing temperature in a manner that indicates the lowest-energy MLCT triplet couples to at least two higher-energy triplets. Cations can bind to the central bipyrimidine unit, forming both 1:1 and 1:2 (ligand:metal) complexes as confirmed by electrospray MS analysis. The photophysical properties depend on the number of bound cations and on the nature of the cation. In the specific case of binding zinc(ii) cations, the 1:1 complex has a triplet lifetime of 8.0 ns while that of the 1:2 complex is 1.8 ns. The 1:1 complexes formed with Ba(2+) and Mg(2+) are more luminescent than is the parent compound while the 1:2 complexes are much less luminescent. It is shown that the coordinated cations raise the reduction potential of the central bipyrimidine unit and thereby increase the activation energy for coupling with the metal-centred state. Complexation also introduces a non-emissive intramolecular charge-transfer (ICT) state that couples to the lowest-energy MLCT triplet and provides an additional non-radiative decay route. The triplet state of the 1:2 complex formed with added Zn(2+) cations decays preferentially via this ICT state.
