Abstract
In this work, through the introduction of different lengths of alkoxy chains to the dinuclear cyclometalated platinum(II) complexes, the apparent color, solubility, luminescence properties, and self-assembly behaviors have been remarkably modulated. In the solid state, the luminescence properties have been found to arise from emission origins that switch between the 3MMLCT excited state in the red solids and the 3IL excited state in the yellow state, depending on the alkoxy chain lengths. The luminescence of the yellow solids is found to show obvious bathochromic shifts under mechanical grinding and decreased intensity under controllable hydrostatic pressure. However, the emission of the red solids exhibits both a bathochromic shift and reduced intensity due to the isotropic compression-induced shortening of the Pt···Pt and π-π distances. By combining the data obtained from X-ray diffraction (XRD), infrared (IR), and X-ray single crystal structure, a better understanding of the relationship between molecular aggregation and photophysical properties has been realized, suggesting that the length of the alkoxy chains plays an important role in governing the supramolecular assemblies.

Abstract
A series of platinum(ii) pincer complexes of the formula Pt(mbzimpy)X+, 1(a-d), (mbzimpy = 2,6-bis(N-methylbenzimidazol-2-yl)pyridine; X = Cl; (a), CCPh; (b), Ph; (c), or CH3; (d), CCPh = phenylacetylide, and Ph = Phenyl) have been synthesized and characterized. Electronic absorption and emission, as well as electrochemical properties of these compounds, have been investigated. Pt(tpy)X+ analogs (tpy = 2,2';6'2''-terpyridine), 2(a-d), have also been investigated and compared. Electrochemistry shows that 1 and 2 analogs undergo two chemically reversible one-electron reduction processes that are shifted cathodically along the a < b < c < d series. Notably, these reductions occur at slightly higher negative potentials in the case of 1. The absorption spectra of 1 and 2 in acetonitrile exhibit ligand-centered (1LC) transitions (ε ≈ 104 M-1 cm-1) in the UV region and metal-to-ligand-charge transfer (1MLCT) transitions (ε ≈ 103 M-1 cm-1) in the visible region. The corresponding visible bands of 1b and 2b have been assigned to 1(LLCT/MLCT) mixed state (LLCT: ligand-to-ligand-charge transfer). The preceding 1LC and 1MLCT transitions of 1 occur at lower energies than that of 2. These 1LC transitions have distinctly been blue-shifted along a < c < d in 2, but occur at nearly identical energies in 1. Conversely, 1MLCT transitions are red-shifted along a < c < d in both the analogs. The 77 K glassy solutions of 1 and 2 exhibit an intense vibronically-structured emission band at λmax(0-0) in the 470-560 nm range. This band is red-shifted along b < a ≤ c < d in 1 and along a ≤ d ≈ c ≪ b in 2. The main character of these emissions is assigned to 3LLCT emissive state in 1b and 2b, whereas to 3LC in the rest of the compounds. Relative stabilization of these spin-forbidden emissive states is discussed by invoking configuration mixing with the higher-lying 3MLCT state.

Abstract
A new class of platinum(ii) terpyridine complexes with a phosphole-derived bridging alkynyl ligand have been prepared. The X-ray crystal structure of complex 2 has been determined, and reveals a polymeric zig-zag chain structure with the existence of π-π stacking interactions. The photophysical properties have also been studied, with 3MLCT/3LLCT phosphorescence exhibited in degassed CH2Cl2; the energy of which is varied by the π-conjugation of the terpyridine ligands. The solvent-induced assembly of complex 1 has been studied. The incorporation of hydrophobic hydrocarbon chains has been shown to play an important role in assisting the formation of self-assembled nanostructures via Pt···Pt, π-π stacking and hydrophobic-hydrophobic interactions. It has been established that an isodesmic growth mechanism operates in polar media to give nanospheres, while fibrous networks originate from the self-assembly of the complexes in non-polar media, predominantly driven by π-π stacking interactions.

Abstract
Square-planar polypyridyl platinum(II) complexes possess a rich range of structural and spectroscopic properties that are ideal for designing artificial photosynthetic centers. Taking advantage of the directionality in the charge-transfer excitation from the metal to the polypyridyl ligand, we describe here diplatinum(II)-ferrocene dyads, open-butterfly-like dyad 1 and closed-butterfly-like dyad 2, which were designed to understand the conformation and orientation effects to prolong the lifetime of charge-separated state. In contrast to the open-butterfly-like dyad 1, the closed-butterfly-like dyad 2 shows three-times long lifetime of charge separated state upon photoexcitation, demonstrating that the orientation in the rigid structure of dyad 2 is a very important issue to achieve long-lived charge separated state.

Abstract
Encouraging efforts on the design of high-performance organic materials and smart architecture during the past two decades have made organic light-emitting device (OLED) technology an important competitor for the existing liquid crystal displays. Particularly, the development of phosphorescent materials based on transition metals plays a crucial role for this success. Apart from the extensively studied iridium(III) complexes with d(6) electronic configuration and octahedral geometry, the coordination-unsaturated nature of d(8) transition metal complexes with square-planar structures has been found to provide intriguing spectroscopic and luminescence properties. This article briefly summarizes the development of d(8) platinum(II) and gold(III) complexes and their application studies in the fabrication of phosphorescent OLEDs. An in-depth understanding of the nature of the excited states has offered a great opportunity to fine-tune the emission colors covering the entire visible spectrum as well as to improve their photophysical properties. With good device engineering, high performance vacuum-deposited OLEDs with external quantum efficiencies (EQEs) of up to 30 % and solution-processable OLEDs with EQEs of up to 10 % have been realized by modifying the cyclometalated or pincer ligands of these metal complexes. These impressive demonstrations reveal that d(8) metal complexes are promising candidates as phosphorescent materials for OLED applications in displays as well as in solid-state lighting in the future.

Abstract
A series of mono- and dinuclear alkynylplatinum(II) terpyridine complexes containing the hydrophilic oligo(para-phenylene ethynylene) with two 3,6,9-trioxadec-1-yloxy chains was designed and synthesized. The mononuclear alkynylplatinum(II) terpyridine complex was found to display a very strong tendency toward the formation of supramolecular structures. Interestingly, additional end-capping with another platinum(II) terpyridine moiety of various steric bulk at the terminal alkyne would lead to the formation of nanotubes or helical ribbons. These desirable nanostructures were found to be governed by the steric bulk on the platinum(II) terpyridine moieties, which modulates the directional metal-metal interactions and controls the formation of nanotubes or helical ribbons. Detailed analysis of temperature-dependent UV-visible absorption spectra of the nanostructured tubular aggregates also provided insights into the assembly mechanism and showed the role of metal-metal interactions in the cooperative supramolecular polymerization of the amphiphilic platinum(II) complexes.

Abstract
Photofunctional molecules and assemblies lie at the heart of many important fundamental processes in nature, and researchers have generated multitudes of artificial chromophores intended to mimic these naturally occurring systems. As dynamic spectroscopic techniques are becoming more widely available, ultrafast techniques in particular, substantial insight continues to be gleaned from the initial photon stimulation event through internal conversion, structural rearrangements, intersystem crossing, energy migration, electron transfer events, and ultimately regeneration of the ground state chromophores in both naturally occurring and inspired chromophores. This Account details research endeavors motivated by the concept that merging organic and inorganic chromophores can lead to new molecules exhibiting novel excited state properties. Moreover, these excited state properties can be fundamentally understood using combinations of static and dynamic spectroscopic tools, yielding systematic improvements to molecules poised for application in diverse research areas including light-harvesting, lifetime engineering, photocatalysis, and photochemical upconversion. Initial explorations focused on utilizing Förster energy transfer processes in Ru(II)-based metal-organic chromophores for solar light-harvesting while maintaining long excited state lifetimes. This eventually led to molecules exhibiting triplet-triplet energy transfer between energetically proximate triplet states featuring thermally activated photoluminescence from the upper charge transfer excited state with markedly extended lifetimes. Interest in systematically producing long-lived excited states with concomitant large Stokes shifts inspired the development of numerous Pt(II) bipyridyl and terpyridyl acetylide charge transfer chromophores featuring ultrafast intramolecular energy migration, high quantum yield ligand-localized phosphorescence at room temperature, and synthetically tunable excited state absorption properties. This structural motif also made it possible to access the triplet excited states of perylenediimide chromophores, permitting quantitative examination of internal conversion and intersystem crossing processes in these complex molecules. The generation of new metal-organic structures featuring unique photophysics appears limitless and simply requires the continued ingenuity of researchers.

Abstract
The exploration of phosphorescent materials based on transition metal-ligand chromophoric complexes represents an important area of research in molecular materials. The knowledge and fundamental understanding of their photophysical properties offer a possible fine-tuning of their electronic absorption and luminescence properties. The strong propensity of d(8) transition metal compounds to form non-covalent metal···metal interactions facilitates supramolecular assembly and the formation of supramolecular nanostructures with interesting photophysical properties. The introduction of supramolecular assembly with hierarchical complexity involving non-covalent interactions could lead to research dimensions of unlimited possibilities and opportunities. This article briefly summarizes the latest progress on the use of d(8) metal-ligand chromophores as chemosensors, as exemplified by alkynylplatinum(II) complexes with emphasis on supramolecular assembly involving non-covalent interactions, and the recent advances in the utilization of d(8) metal-ligand phosphors, as exemplified by alkynylgold(III) system, for the exploration and development of phosphorescent OLEDs.

Abstract
Platinum(II)-containing complexes with inherently chiral binaphthol derivatives display a versatile scaffold between random coils and single-turn helical strands, in which the conformational transition is controlled by the Pt···Pt and π-π interactions of alkynylplatinum(II) terpyridine moiety upon solvent and temperature modulation. The bisignate Cotton effect in the circular dichroism spectra is indicative of the cooperative transformation from random coil state to a compact single-turn M- or P-helix. More importantly, as revealed by the appearance of new UV-vis absorption and emission bands during conformational change, the self-assembly of the platinum(II)-containing complex into a helical structure is assisted by the metal···metal and π-π interactions of the alkynylplatinum(II) terpyridine moieties. The folded structure with stabilization via metal···metal and π-π interactions has been supported by density functional theory calculations, which provide insights into the folded geometry of these kind of metallo-foldamers.
