Abstract
A new Zn(II)-based coordination polymer (1) comprising the Schiff base ligand obtained by the condensation of 5-aminosalicylic acid and salicylaldehyde has been synthesized. This newly synthesized compound has been characterized by analytical and spectroscopic methods, and finally, by single-crystal X-ray diffraction technique in this study. The X-ray analysis reveals a distorted tetrahedral environment around the central Zn(II) center. This compound has been used as a sensitive and selective fluorescent sensor for acetone and Ag+ cations. The photoluminescence measurements indicate that in the presence of acetone, the emission intensity of 1 displays quenching at room temperature. However, other organic solvents caused meagre changes in the emission intensity of 1. Additionally, the fluorescence intensity of 1 has been examined in the presence of different ketones viz. cyclohexanone, 4-heptanone, and 5-nonanone, to assess the interaction between the C=O group of the ketones and the molecular framework of 1. Moreover, 1 displays a selective recognition of Ag+ in the aqueous medium by an enhancement in its fluorescence intensity, representing its high sensitivity for the detection of Ag+ ions in a water sample. Additionally, 1 displays the selective adsorption of cationic dyes (methylene blue and rhodamine B). Hence, 1 showcases its potential as an excellent luminescent probe to detect acetone, other ketones, and Ag+ with an exceptional selectivity, and displaying a selective adsorption of cationic dye molecules.

Abstract
Treatment of N,N'-bis(2-aminophenyl)oxalamide (bapoxH6, 1) with ethyl oxalyl chloride in THF afforded oxamide-N,N'-bis(o-phenylene oxamic acid ethyl ester) (L1H4Et2, 2), which was converted to 3 (oxamide-(o-phenylene oxamic acid ethyl ester)(o-phenylene-N1-methyloxalamide); L2H5EtMe) and 4 (oxamide-N,N'-bis(o-phenylene-N1-methyloxalamide); L3H6Me2) by the addition of appropriate equivalents of MeNH2. Successive treatment of 2-4 with six equivalents of [nBu4N]OH and two equivalents of CuII salt resulted in the formation of the binuclear complexes [nBu4N]2[Cu2(L1)] (5), [nBu4N]2[Cu2(L2Me)] (6) and [nBu4N]2[Cu2(L3Me2)] (7). Upon addition of one equivalent of [Cu(pmdta)(NO3)2] (pmdta = N,N,N',N'',N''-pentamethyldiethylenetriamine) to 5-7, the trinuclear complexes [Cu3(L1)(pmdta)] (8), [Cu3(L2Me)(pmdta)] (9) and [Cu3(L3Me2)(pmdta)] (10) were obtained, while the addition of two equivalents of [Cu(pmdta)(NO3)2] gave rise to the tetranuclear complexes [Cu4(L1)(pmdta)2](NO3)2 (11), [Cu4(L2Me)(pmdta)2](NO3)2 (12) and [Cu4(L3Me2)(pmdta)2](NO3)2 (13). The identities of compounds 2-4 were established by elemental analyses, NMR and IR spectroscopy, and ESI-MS measurements. For the multinuclear complexes 5-13, elemental analysis and IR spectroscopy were applied to confirm their identities. Furthermore, the solid-state structures of 5-8 and 11-13 were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction studies. The magnetic behavior of 5-8 and 11-13 was studied by direct current susceptibility measurements as a function of temperature. For the binuclear complexes 5-7, exceptionally large antiferromagnetic exchange interactions with J1,2 values of -378, -397 and -419 cm-1 were determined. Astonishingly, the tendency of these series of magnetic exchange interactions can be smoothly associated with the d-d transitions of 5-7 measured through UV-Vis spectroscopy. The J1,2 value of 8 amounts to -507 cm-1, while for the tetranuclear complexes 11-13, this value is significantly smaller and amounts to -294, -292 and -370 cm-1. The second antiferromagnetic exchange interactions J2,3 and J1,4 are equal due to inversion symmetry and are -100, -135, -80 and -108 cm-1 for 8 and 11-13, respectively, in the expected range. Magneto-structural correlations are used to discuss the variable magnetic exchange interactions of all here reported multinuclear complexes.

Abstract
The synthesis, crystal structure and magnetic properties of the coordination polymers of formula [EDAP{Li6(H2O)8[(Cu2(μ-mpba)2)2(H2O)2]}]n (1) and [(EDAP)2{K(H2O)4[Cu2(μ-mpba)2(H2O)2]}Cl·2H2O]n (2), in which mpba = N,N′-1,3-phenylenebis(oxamate) and EDAP2+ = 1,1′-ethylenebis(4-aminopyridinium) are described. Both compounds have in common the presence of the [Cu2(mpba)2]4− tetraanionic unit which is a [3,3] metallacyclophane motif in which the copper(II) ions are five-coordinate in a distorted square pyramidal surrounding. The complex anion in 1 is dimerized through double out-of-plane copper to outer carboxylate-oxygen atoms resulting in the centrosymmetric tetracopper(II) fragment [Cu4(μ-mpba)4(H2O)2]8− which act as a ligand toward six hydrated lithium(I) cations leading to anionic ladder-like double chains whose charge is neutralized by the EDAP2+ cations. In the case of 2, each dicopper(II) entity acts as a ligand towards tetraquapotassium(I) units to afford anionic zig zag single chains of formula {K(H2O)4[Cu2(μ-mpba)2(H2O)2]}n3n− plus EDAP2+ cations and non-coordinate chloride anions. Cryomagnetic measurements on polycrystalline samples 1 and 2 show the occurrence of ferromagnetic interactions between the copper(II) ions across the –Namidate–(C–C–C)phenyl–Namidate– exchange pathway [J = +10.6 (1) and +8.22 cm−1 (2)] and antiferromagnetic ones through the double out-of-plane carboxylate-oxygen atoms [j = −0.68 cm−1 (1), the spin Hamiltonian being defined as H = − J ( S C u 1 · S C u 2 + S C u 2 i · S C u 1 i ) − j ( S C u 2 · S C u 2 i ) ].

Abstract
The complexing ability of copper(II) in solution by the ligand N,N'-2,6-pyridinebis(oxamic acid) (H4mpyba, H4L) was determined through potentiometric and UV-vis spectroscopy at 25 °C and 0.15 M NaCl. The logarithms of the equilibrium constants for its copper(II) complexes according to the eqs 2H2L + 2Cu ⇆ [Cu2(H2L)2], 2H2L + 2Cu ⇆ [Cu2(H2L) (HL)] + H, 2H2L + 2Cu ⇆ [Cu2(HL)2] + 2H, 2H2L + 2Cu ⇆ [Cu2(HL)(L)] + 3H, and 2H2L + 2Cu ⇆ [Cu2L2] + 4H were 12.02(7), 8.04(5), 1.26(6), -7.51(6), and -16.36(6), respectively. The knowledge of the solution behavior has supported the synthesis of three new compounds bearing the common building block Cu2L2(4-). Their formulas are (Me4N)4[Cu2(mpyba)2(H2O)2]·H2O (1), (Me4N)4[K2Na2Cu4(mpyba)4(H2O)6.8]·1.6H2O (2), and [Na6Cu2(mpyba)2Cl2(H2O)8]·7H2O (3) (Me4N(+) = tetramethylammonium cation). The [Cu2(mpyba)2(H2O)2](4-) tetraanionic unit, which is present in 1, has a [3,3] metallacyclophane-type motif connected by two N-Cu-N bonds. In 2, a heterotrimetallic decanuclear nanocage is formed through front-to-front assembly of two [Cu2(mpyba)2](4-) units, which also coordinate to potassium(I) and sodium(I) cations by means of carboxylate oxygens from oxamate. The structure of 3 consists of heterobimetallic layers of formula [Na6Cu2(mpyba)2Cl2(H2O)8] and crystallization water molecules, which are interlinked by hydrogen bonds leading to a supramolecular three-dimensional network. The investigation of the magnetic properties of 1-3 in the temperature range 1.9-300 K shows the occurrence of ferromagnetic interactions between the dicopper(II) metallacyclophane unit [J = +6.85 (1), +7.40 (2), and +7.90 cm(-1) (3); H = -JSCu1·SCu2, where SCu1 = SCu2 = 1/2]. Theoretical calculations on 1-3 were carried to substantiate the nature and magnitude of the involved magnetic interactions and to support the occurrence of a spin polarization mechanism accounting for them.

Abstract
The double stranded Cu(II)2-metallacyclic complex of formula [Cu2(mbpb)2].2H2O (1) and the triple stranded Ni(II)2-metallacyclic complexes of formula [Ni2(Hmbpb)3]PF6.21H2O (2), [Co(H2O)6][Ni2(mbpb)3)]THF.10H2O (3) and {Ag2(H2O)[Ni2(mbpb)3]}.11H2O (4) (where H2mbpb is the bisbidentate dinucleating bridging ligand 1,3-bis(pyridine-2-carboxamide) benzene) have been synthesised and characterised by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Within the dinuclear molecules, metal ions are bridged by either fully or semideprotonated bisbidentate ligands, which are coordinated through the pyridine and amidato nitrogen donor atoms. In complex 4 the triple stranded dinuclear Ni2 units are connected to the Ag+ cations through O-amidato bridges and Ag-pi(benzene) interactions to afford a 1D bimetallic chain. Cu2 (1) and Ni2 (2-4) complexes exhibit ferromagnetic coupling between the metal ions through the bridging ligand with J(Cu-Cu) = 21.1 cm(-1) and J(Ni-Ni) in the range of 2.9-3.6 cm(-1), respectively. Amongst copper(II) dinuclear complexes bearing m-phenylenediamidato bridges, complex 1 exhibits the stronger ferromagnetic exchange coupling reported so far. DFT calculations firstly confirm that the spin polarisation mechanism is responsible for the ferromagnetic coupling, and secondly allows us to predict stronger ferromagnetic couplings in Cu(II)(2) complexes with larger tetrahedral distortions of the CuN4 coordination environment.

Abstract
New homo- and heterobimetallic tetranuclear complexes of formula [Cu(4)(mpba)(Me(4)en)(4)(H(2)O)(4)](ClO(4))(4).3H(2)O (1), [Cu(4)(mpba)(Me(4)en)(4)(H(2)O)(4)](PF(6))(4).2H(2)O (2), [Cu(4)(ppba)(Me(4)en)(4)(H(2)O)(4)](ClO(4))(4).2H(2)O (3), [Cu(4)(mpba)(dipn)(4)](ClO(4))(4).3H(2)O (4), [Cu(4)(ppba)(dipn)(4)](ClO(4))(4).2H(2)O (5), and [Cu(2)Ni(2)(ppba)(dipn)(4)(H(2)O)(2)](PF(6))(4) (6) [mpba = N,N'-1,3-phenylenebis(oxamate), ppba = N,N'-1,4-phenylenebis(oxamate), Me(4)en = N,N,N',N'-tetramethylethylenediamine, and dipn = dipropylenetriamine] have been synthesized and structurally and magnetically characterized. Complexes 1-6 have been prepared following a molecular-programmed self-assembly method, where a heteropolytopic tetranucleating phenylenedioxamato bridging ligand (L = mpba or ppba) is bound to four metal ions of identical or different natures (M = Cu(II) and/or Ni(II)) with partially blocked coordination sites by bi- or tridentate polyamine terminal ligands (L' = Me(4)en or dipn). The structures of 1-6 consist of cationic tetranuclear Cu(II)(2)M(II)(2) entities with an overall (4)R rack-type architecture, which is made up of two oxamato-bridged homo- (1-5) or heterodinuclear (6) Cu(II)M(II) units (M = Cu and Ni) connected through either a meta- (1, 2, and 4) or a para-substituted (3, 5, and 6) phenylene spacer between the Cu(II) ions. The magnetic properties of 1-6 have been interpreted according to their "dimer-of-dimers" structure [H = -J(S(1).S(2) + S(3).S(4)) - J'(S(1).S(3)) with S(1) = S(3) = S(Cu) = 1/2 and S(2) = S(4) = S(M) = 1/2 (M = Cu) or 1 (M = Ni)]. The homometallic Cu(II)(4) complexes exhibit either strong (-J = 330-350 cm(-1)) or weak-to-moderate (-J = 4.8-87.1 cm(-1)) antiferromagnetic intradimer couplings through the oxamato bridge, depending on the bi- (1-3) or tridentate (4 and 5) nature of the terminal ligand, respectively. The heterometallic Cu(II)(2)Ni(II)(2) complex with a tridentate terminal ligand (6) shows instead a moderate antiferromagnetic intradimer coupling (-J = 50 cm(-1)). Otherwise, the nature and magnitude of the interdimer coupling cannot be unambiguously determined except for the pair of homo- and heterometallic Cu(II)(2)M(II)(2) complexes [M = Cu (5) and Ni (6)] with the p-phenylenedioxamato bridging ligand and a tridentate terminal ligand, which show a weak antiferromagnetic interdimer coupling (-J' = 14 and 23 cm(-1)) across the para-substituted phenylene spacer.
