Two-Phase Synthesis of Colloidal Annular-Shaped CexLa1−xCO3OH Nanoarchitectures Assemblied from Small Particles and Their Thermal Conversion to Derived Mixed Oxides

Expanding the Coordination of f-Block Metals with Tris[2-(2-methoxyethoxy)ethyl]amine: From Molecular Complexes to Cage-like Structures

Low-valent f-block metals have intrinsic luminescence, electrochemical, and magnetic properties that are modulated with ligands, causing the coordination chemistry of these metals to be imperative to generating critical insights needed to impact modern applications. To this end, we synthesized and characterized a series of twenty-seven complexes of f-metal ions including EuII, YbII, SmII, and UIII and hexanuclear clusters of LaIII and CeIII to study the impact of tris[2-(2-methoxyethoxy)ethyl]amine, a flexible acyclic analogue of the extensively studied 2.2.2-cryptand, on the coordination chemistry and photophysical properties of low-valent f-block metals. We demonstrate that the flexibility of the ligand enables luminescence tunability over a greater range than analogous cryptates of EuII in solution. Furthermore, the ligand also displays a variety of binding modes to f-block metals in the solid state that are inaccessible to cryptates of low-valent f-block metals. In addition to serving as a ligand for f-block metals of various sizes and oxidation states, tris[2-(2-methoxyethoxy)ethyl]amine also deprotonates water molecules coordinated to trivalent triflate salts of f-block metal ions, enabling the isolation of hexanuclear clusters containing either LaIII or CeIII. The ligand was also found to bind more tightly to YbII and UIII in the solid state compared to 2.2.2-cryptand, suggesting that it can play a role in the isolation of other low-valent f-block metals such CfII, NpIII, and PuIII. We expect that our findings will inspire applications of tris[2-(2-methoxyethoxy)ethyl]amine in the design of light-emitting diodes and the synthesis of extremely reducing divalent f-block metal complexes that are of interest for a wide range of applications.

Multicomponent hydroxides supported Cu/Cu2O nanoparticles for high efficient photocatalytic ammonia synthesis

Environmentally friendly photocatalytic N₂ fixation process has attracted considerable attention. Developing efficient photocatalysts with high electron-hole separation rates and gas adsorption capacities remains quite challenging. Herein, a facile fabrication strategy of Cu-Cu₂O and multicomponent hydroxide S-scheme heterojunctions with carbon dot charge mediators is reported. The rational heterostructurebrings excellent N₂ absorption ability and high photoinduced electron/hole separation efficiency, and the ammonia produced yield reach above 210 µmol·g_cal^-1·h^-1 during the nitrogen photofixation process. More superoxide and hydroxyl radicals are generated simultaneously in the as-prepared samples under light illumination. This work offers a reasonable construction method to further develop suitable photocatalysts for ammonia synthesis.

Synthesis and adsorption of FeMnLa-impregnated biochar composite as an adsorbent for As(III) removal from aqueous solutions

Groundwater with elevated As concentrations is a global concern, and low-cost, high-efficiency removal technologies are necessary. Therefore, we have prepared three adsorbent FeMnLa-impregnated biochar composites (FMLBCs) for the efficient removal of As(III) from aqueous solutions and characterized them using a variety of techniques. We found that the efficiency of As(III) removal increased with increasing La content and that the removal mainly occurred via adsorption and oxidation. Moreover, the removal of As(III) by FMLBCs was rapid and was best fitted to a pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The adsorption isotherms were well described by the Langmuir equation, and the maximum As(III) adsorption capacity was 15.34 mg g^-1. These results highlight the significant potential of FMLBCs as adsorbents for As(III) removal from aqueous solutions.

Robust biomimetic-structural superhydrophobic surface on aluminum alloy

The following facile approach has been developed to prepare a biomimetic-structural superhydrophobic surface with high stabilities and strong resistances on 2024 Al alloy that are robust to harsh environments. First, a simple hydrothermal treatment in a La(NO3)3 aqueous solution was used to fabricate ginkgo-leaf like nanostructures, resulting in a superhydrophilic surface on 2024 Al. Then a low-surface-energy compound, dodecafluoroheptyl-propyl-trimethoxylsilane (Actyflon-G502), was used to modify the superhydrophilic 2024 Al, changing the surface character from superhydrophilicity to superhydrophobicity. The water contact angle (WCA) of such a superhydrophobic surface reaches up to 160°, demonstrating excellent superhydrophobicity. Moreover, the as-prepared superhydrophobic surface shows high stabilities in air-storage, chemical and thermal environments, and has strong resistances to UV irradiation, corrosion, and abrasion. The WCAs of such a surface almost remain unchanged (160°) after storage in air for 80 days, exposure in 250 °C atmosphere for 24 h, and being exposed under UV irradiation for 24 h, are more than 144° whether in acidic or alkali medium, and are more than 150° after 48 h corrosion and after abrasion under 0.98 kPa for 1000 mm length. The remarkable durability of the as-prepared superhydrophobic surface can be attributed to its stable structure and composition, which are due to the existence of lanthanum (hydr)oxides in surface layer. The robustness of the as-prepared superhydrophobic surface to harsh environments will open their much wider applications. The fabricating approach for such robust superhydrophobic surface can be easily extended to other metals and alloys.

From formation mechanisms to synthetic methods toward shape-controlled oxide nanoparticles

Metal oxide nanomaterials have been intensively pursued for modern science and nanotechnology. Control over the size and shape of the oxide nanoparticles enables tunability of their unique properties sought for many useful applications. This review presents a comprehensive overview of the recent advances in the shape-controlled synthesis of colloidal oxide nanoparticles. We introduce the size- and shape-dependent properties of the oxide nanoparticles along with their potential applications and subsequent descriptions of the kinetic regime concepts of the formation of the monodisperse nanocolloids. Variations of the experimental conditions including capping molecules, precursor monomer concentration, and reaction temperature/aging have been explored to control the shape of the oxide nanoparticles in wet-chemistry syntheses. The different capping molecule-assisted synthetic methods of the hydro-solvothermal route, the two-phase route, heating-up thermolysis, and reverse micelle are presented as a collection of clear examples of the regular oxide nanoparticles. We also discuss the advantages and obstacles of the synthetic methods that have proven to be controllable and reproducible. The author concludes this review with valuable portraits on working hypotheses for the shape-controlled oxide nanoparticle synthesis.

A general procedure to synthesize highly crystalline metal oxide and mixed oxide nanocrystals in aqueous medium and photocatalytic activity of metal/oxide nanohybrids

A conventional and general route has been exploited to the high yield synthesis of many kinds of highly crystalline metal oxide and mixed oxide nanocrystals with different morphologies including belt, rod, truncated-octahedron, cubic, sphere, sheet via the hydrothermal reaction of inorganic precursors in aqueous solution in the presence of bifunctional 6-aminohexanoic acid (AHA) molecules as a capping agent. This method is a simple, reproducible and general route for the preparation of a variety of high-crystalline inorganic nanocrystals in scale-up. The shape of inorganic nanocrystals such as CoWO(4), La(2)(MoO(4))(3) can be controlled by simply adjusting the synthesis conditions including pH solution and reaction temperature. Further, by tuning precursor monomer concentration, the mesocrystal hierarchical aggregated microspheres (e.g., MnWO(4), La(2)(MoO(4))(3)) can be achieved, due to the spontaneous assembly of individual AHA-capped nanoparticles. These obtained AHA-capped nanocrystals are excellent supports for the synthesis of a variety of hybrid metal/oxide nanocrystals in which noble metal particles are uniformly deposited on the surface of each individual nanosupport. The photocatalytic activity of Ag/TiO(2) nanobelts as a typical hybrid photocatalyst sample for Methylene Blue degradation was also studied.
