Abstract
We present the synthesis of two new novel tetradentate ligands based on 1,3,4-oxadiazole, 2-(2-pyridyl)-5-[N,N-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)aminomethyl]-1,3,4-oxadiazole (LTetraPy-ODA) and 2-(2-phenyl)-5-[N,N-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)aminomethyl]-1,3,4-oxadiazole (LTetraPh-ODA). The ligands were used to prepare six mononuclear complexes [FeII(LTetraPy-ODA)(NCE)] (C1-C3) and [FeII(LTetraPh-ODA)(NCE)] (C4-C6) where E = S, Se or BH3. In addition, the ligand LTetraPy-ODA was employed in the synthesis of a new di-nuclear complex [FeII2(LTetraPh)](ClO4)4·1 CH3NO2·1.5 H2O (C7). Characterization of all complexes was carried out using single-crystal X-ray crystallography, elemental analysis, and infrared spectroscopy. Magnetic susceptibility measurements, performed in the temperature range of 2-300 K using a SQUID magnetometer, revealed spin crossover behaviour exclusively in the mononuclear complexes C3 and C6, in which two monodentate NCBH3- co-ligands coordinate. The presence of the lattice solvent was found to be crucial to the spin transition property, with complex C3 exhibiting a switching temperature (T1/2) of approximately 165 K and C6 approximately 194 K. The other four mononuclear complexes C1, C2, C4, C5, as well as the dinuclear complex C7 are locked in the high spin state over the measured temperature range. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations were performed on complexes C1-C6 to rationalise the observed magnetic behaviour, demonstrating the significant effect of the NCS-, NCSe- and NCBH3- co-ligands ligands on the spin-crossover behaviour of the [FeII(L)(NCE)] complexes.

Abstract
By employing a recently proposed Hubbard U density-corrected scheme within density functional theory, we provide design principles towards the design of materials exhibiting a spin crossover-assisted gas release. Small molecular fragments are used as case study to identify two main mechanisms behind the change in binding energy upon spin transitions. The feasibility of the proposed mechanism in porous crystals is assessed by correlating the change in binding energy of CO2, CO, N2, and H2, upon spin crossover, with the adiabatic energy difference associated with the spin state change of the square-planar metal in Hofmann-type clathrates (M = Fe, Mn, Ni). A few promising cases are identified for the adsorption of intermediate ligand field strength molecules such as N2 and H2. The latter stands out as the most original result as the strong interaction in low spin, as expected from a Kubas mechanism, results in a large change in binding energy. This work provides a general perspective towards the engineering of open-metal site frameworks exhibiting local environments designed to have a spin crossover upon adsorption of specific gas molecules.

Abstract
Reliable prediction of the ground-state spin and magnetic coupling constants in transition-metal complexes is a well-known challenge for density functional theory (DFT). One popular strategy for addressing this long-standing issue involves the modification of the fraction of Fock exchange in a hybrid functional. Here we explore the viability of this approach using three polynuclear metal-organic complexes based on a Ni4O4 cubane motif, having different ground state spin values (S = 0, 2, 4) owing to the use of different ligands. We systematically search for an optimum fraction of Fock exchange, across various global, range-separated, and double hybrid functionals. We find that for all functionals tested, at best there only exists a very narrow range of Fock exchange fractions which results in a correct prediction of the ground-state spin for all three complexes. The useful range is functional dependent, but general trends can be identified. Typically, at least two similar systems must be used in order to determine both an upper and lower limit of the optimal range. This is likely owing to conflicting demands of minimizing delocalization errors, which typically requires a higher percentage of Fock exchange, and addressing static correlation, which typically requires a lower one. Furthermore, we find that within the optimal range of Fock exchange, the sign and relative magnitude of Ni-Ni magnetic coupling constants are reasonably well reproduced, but there is still room for quantitative improvement in the prediction. Thus, the prediction of spin state and magnetic coupling in polynuclear complexes remains an ongoing challenge for DFT.

Abstract
Calculation of transition temperatures T1/2 for thermally driven spin-crossover in condensed phases is challenging, even with sophisticated state-of-the-art density functional approximations. The first issue is the accuracy of the adiabatic crossover energy difference ΔEHL between the low- and high-spin states of the bistable metal-organic complexes. The other is the proper inclusion of entropic contributions to the Gibbs free energy from the electronic and vibrational degrees of freedom. We discuss the effects of treatments of both contributions upon the calculation of thermochemical properties for a set of 20 spin-crossover materials using a Hubbard-U correction obtained from a reference ensemble spin-state. The U values obtained from a simplest bimolecular representation may overcorrect, somewhat, the ΔEHL values, hence giving somewhat excessive reduction of the T1/2 results with respect to their U = 0 values in the crystalline phase. We discuss the origins of the discrepancies by analyzing different sources of uncertainties. By use of a first-coordination-sphere approximation and the assumption that vibrational contributions from the outermost atoms in a metal-organic complex are similar in both low- and high-spin states, we achieve T1/2 results with the low-cost, widely used PBE generalized gradient density functional approximation comparable to those from the more costly, more sophisticated r2SCAN meta-generalized gradient approximation. The procedure is promising for use in high-throughput materials screening, because it combines rather low computational effort requirements with freedom from user manipulation of parameters.

Abstract
Two acyclic tetradentate Schiff base ligands, HLX-OH (X = H and Br), were synthesised by 2:1 condensation of either 2-pyridinecarboxaldehyde or 5-bromo-2-pyridinecarboxaldehyde and 1,3-diamino-2-propanol and then used to prepare six mononuclear complexes, [FeII(HLX-OH)(NCE)2], with three different NCE co-ligands (E = BH3, Se, and S). The apparent solution spin crossover switching temperature, T1/2, of these 6 complexes, determined by Evans method NMR studies, is tuned by several factors: (a) substituent X present at the 5 position of the pyridine ring of the ligand, (b) E present in the NCE co-ligand, (c) solvent employed (P'), and (d) potentially also by speciation effects. In CD3CN, for the pair of NCE = NCBH3 complexes, when X = H, the complex is practically LS (extrapolated T1/2 ∼624 K), whereas when X = Br, it is far lower (373 K), which implies a higher field strength when X = H than when it is Br. The same trend, X = H results in a higher apparent T1/2 than X = Br, is seen for the other two pairs of complexes, with E = Se (429 > 351 K, ΔT1/2 = 78 K) or S (361 > 342 K, ΔT1/2 = 19 K). For the family of three X = Br complexes, the change of E from BH3 (373 K) to Se (351 K) to S (342 K) leads to an overall ΔT1/2(apparent) = 31 K, whereas the decreases are far more pronounced in the X = H family (BH3 ∼624 > Se 429 > S 361 K). Changing the solvent used from CD3CN to (CD3)2CO and CD3NO2, for [FeII(HLBr-OH)(NCE)2] with either E = BH3 or S, revealed excellent, and very similar, positive linear correlations (R2 = 0.99) of increasing solvent polarity index P' (from 5 to 7) with increasing apparent T1/2 of the complex (E = BH3 gave T1/2 300 < 373 < 451 K , ΔT1/2 = 151 K; E = S gave T1/2 288 < 342 < 427 K, ΔT1/2 = 147 K). Several other solvent parameters were also correlated with the apparent T1/2 of these complexes (R2 = 0.74-0.96). Excellent linear correlations (R2 = 0.99) are also obtained with the coordination ability (aTM) of the three NCE co-ligands with the apparent T1/2 in both families of compounds, [FeII(HLX-OH)(NCE)2] where X = H or Br. The 15N NMR chemical shifts of the nitrogen atom in the three NCE co-ligands (direct measurement) show modest correlations (R2 = 0.74 for LH-OH family and 0.80 for LBr-OH family) with the apparent T1/2 values of the corresponding complexes.

Abstract
The syntheses of valence tautomeric compounds with multistep transitions using new redox-active ligands are the long-term goal of the field of bistable materials. The redox-active tetraoxolene ligand, 2,7-di-tert-butylpyrene-4,5,9,10-tetraone (pyreneQ-Q), is now developed to synthesize a pair of dinuclear compounds {[CoL2]2(pyreneSq-Sq)}[Co(CO)4]2·xCH2Cl2·2C6H5CH3 (1, x = 2, L = 1,10-phenanthroline, phen; 2, x = 1.5, L = 2,2'-bipyridine, bpy). Variable-temperature magnetic susceptibilities and single-crystal X-ray diffraction measurements indicate a partial one-step valence tautomeric transition for 1 and a rare two-step valence tautomeric transition for 2, respectively. DFT calculation results are consistent with the experimental data, revealing the correlation between thermodynamic parameters and the one-step/two-step valence tautomeric behaviors.

Abstract
Fe(III) complexes are receiving ever-increasing attention as spin crossover (SCO) systems because they are usually air stable, as opposed to Fe(II) complexes, which are prone to oxidation. Here, we present the first systematic study exclusively devoted to assess the accuracy of several exchange-correlation functionals when it comes to predicting the energy gap between the high-spin (S = 5/2) and the low-spin (S = 1/2) states of Fe(III) complexes. Using a dataset of 24 different Fe(III) hexacoordinated complexes, it is demonstrated that the B3LYP* functional is an excellent choice not only for predicting spin-state energy gaps for Fe(III) complexes undergoing spin-transitions but also for discriminating Fe(III) complexes that are either low- or high-spin in the whole range of temperatures. Our benchmark study has led to the identification of a very versatile Fe(III) compound whose SCO properties can be engineered upon changing a single axial ligand. Overall, this work demonstrates that B3LYP* is a reliable functional for screening new spin-crossover systems with tailored properties.

Abstract
The ability to identify promising candidate switchable molecules computationally, prior to synthesis, represents a considerable advance in the development of switchable molecular materials. Even more useful would be the possibility of predicting the switching temperature. Cobalt-dioxolene complexes can exhibit thermally induced valence tautomeric switching between low-spin CoIII-catecholate and high-spin CoII-semiquinonate forms, where the half-temperature (T1/2) is the temperature at which there are equal amounts of the two tautomers. We report the first simple computational strategy for accurately predicting T1/2 values for valence tautomeric complexes. Dispersion-corrected density functional theory (DFT) methods have been applied to the [Co(dbdiox)(dbsq)(N2L)] (dbdiox/dbsq•- = 3,5-di-tert-butyldioxolene/semiquinonate; N2L = diimine) family of valence tautomeric complexes, including the newly reported [Co(dbdiox)(dbsq)(MeO-bpy)] (1) (MeO-bpy = 4,4'-dimethoxy-2,2'-bipyridine). The DFT strategy has been thoroughly benchmarked to experimental data, affording highly accurate spin-distributions and an excellent energy match between experimental and calculated spin-states. Detailed orbital analysis of the [Co(dbdiox)(dbsq)(N2L)] complexes has revealed that the diimine ligand tunes the T1/2 value primarily through π-acceptance. We have established an excellent correlation between experimental T1/2(toluene) values for [Co(dbdiox)(dbsq)(N2L)] complexes and the calculated lowest unoccupied molecular orbital energy of the corresponding diimine ligand. The model affords accurate T1/2(toluene) values for [Co(dbdiox)(dbsq)(N2L)] complexes, with an average error of only 3.7%. This quantitative and simple DFT strategy allows experimentalists to not only rapidly identify proposed VT complexes but also predict the transition temperature. This study lays the groundwork for future in silico screening of candidate switchable molecules prior to experimental investigation, with associated time, cost, and environmental benefits.

Abstract
In this work, a computational method to study the spin-crossover (SCO) behavior of the [Cr(n-Meindenyl)2] family was carried out. Using the TPSSh/Def2TZVP method with the GD3BJ dispersion correction scheme, we computed the thermochemistry and transition temperatures (T1/2) for all members of this family, which are in excellent agreement with the available experimental data. Moreover, the computed data allow us to build a model that describes the effect of functionalizing the indenyl ligand in different positions on the spin-state energy gap and transition temperature. Our results show that the C4 and C7 positions of the indenyl ligand have a greater effect on tuning the SCO properties of such complexes. The model quantitatively reproduces the DFT calculations, thus providing a powerful tool to analyze and predict the SCO properties in any member of the [Cr(n-Meindenyl)2] family.

Abstract
We recently showed that the DFT+U approach with a linear-response U yields adiabatic energy differences biased toward high spin [Mariano et al. J. Chem. Theory Comput. 2020, 16, 6755-6762]. Such bias is removed here by employing a density-corrected DFT approach where the PBE functional is evaluated on the Hubbard U-corrected density. The adiabatic energy differences of six Fe(II) molecular complexes computed using this approach, named PBE[U] here, are in excellent agreement with coupled cluster-corrected CASPT2 values for both weak- and strong-field ligands resulting in a mean absolute error (MAE) of 0.44 eV, smaller than that of the recently proposed Hartree-Fock density-corrected DFT (1.22 eV) and any other tested functional, including the best performer TPSSh (0.49 eV). We take advantage of the computational efficiency of this approach and compute the adiabatic energy differences of five molecular crystals using PBE[U] with periodic boundary conditions. The results show, again, an excellent agreement (MAE = 0.07 eV) with experimentally extracted values and a superior performance compared with the best performers M06-L (MAE = 0.08 eV) and TPSSh (MAE = 0.31 eV) computed on molecular fragments.

Abstract
Accurately predicting the spin splitting energy of chemical species is important for understanding their reactivity and magnetic properties, but it is very challenging, especially for molecules containing transition metals. One impediment to progress is the scarcity of accurate benchmark data. Here we report a set of calculations designed to yield reliable benchmarks for simple transition-metal complexes that can be used to test density functional methods that are affordable for large systems of more practical interest. Various wave function methods are tested against experiment for Fe2+, Fe3+, and Co3+, including CASSCF, CASPT2, CASPT3, MRCISD, MRCISD+Q, ACPF, AQCC, CCSD(T), and CASPT2/CCSD(T) and also a new method called CASPT2.5, which is performed by taking the average of the CASPT2 and CASPT3 energies. We find that MRCISD+Q, ACPF, and AQCC require smaller active spaces for good accuracy than are required by CASPT2 and CASPT3, and this aspect may be important for calculations on larger molecules; here we find that CASPT2.5 extrapolated to a complete basis set is the most suitable method-in terms of computational cost and in terms of accuracy on monatomic systems-and therefore we chose this method for molecular benchmarks. Then Kohn-Sham density functional calculations with 60 exchange-correlation functionals are tested for FeF2, FeCl2, and CoF2. We find that MN15-L, M06-SX, and revM06 have very good agreement with CASPT2.5 benchmarks in terms of both the spin splitting energy and the optimized geometry for each spin state. In addition, we recommend def2-TZVP as the most suitable basis set to perform density functional calculations for molecular spin splitting energies; extra polarization functions in the basis set do not help to increase the accuracy of the spin splitting energy in KS calculations.

Abstract
The strongly constrained and appropriately normed (SCAN) functional has been tested toward the calculation of spin-state energy differences in a data set of 20 spin-crossover (SCO) systems, ranging from d4 to d7. Results show that the SCAN functional is able to correctly predict the low-spin state as the ground state for all systems, and the energy window provided by the calculations falls in the approximate range of energies that will allow for SCO to occur. Moreover, the SCAN functional can be used in periodic boundary condition calculations, accounting for the effect of collective crystal vibrations and counterions in the thermochemistry of the spin transition. Our results validate this functional as a potential method for in silico screening of new SCO systems at both, molecular and crystal-packed levels.

Abstract
We have studied a Fe-based di-nuclear molecular complex having the chemical formula [{Fe(bpp)(NCS)2}2([Formula: see text]'-bipy)]·2MeOH (where bpp = [Formula: see text]-bis(pyrazol-3-yl) pyridine and [Formula: see text]'-bipy = [Formula: see text]'-bipyridine, 1) using density functional theory and model Hamiltonian approach. Our study provides insight to the pressure driven spin-crossover (SCO) phenomena observed experimentally in these systems. Upon increasing the pressure, the spin state of Fe(II) cation gradually changes from a high spin state (S =2) to a low spin (LS) state (S =0) accompanied by volume contraction. The gradual increase in pressure shrinks Fe-N bond length and also causes angular deviation of the FeN6 octahedron leading to full conversion to the LS state without global structural phase transition. We have carried out exact diagonalization study of an effective single site Hamiltonian and confirmed the importance of intramolecular interaction for SCO phenomena. We have investigated the cooperativity of the observed SCO phenomena. We have also studied the effect of Co doping on the spin state of Fe and find that the spin state of Fe has a subtle dependency on the concentration of dopant atoms. Excess Co doping pave the way towards the possibility of an intermediate spin state for Fe and can give rise to a bistable spin transition process.

Abstract
Two Fe(ii)-based coordination polymers [Fe(tpmd)2(NCS)2]·5.5H2O (1) and [Fe(tpmd)2(NCSe)2]·7H2O (2) with the framework of square-grid type have been assembled from FeSO4·7H2O, N,N,N′,N′-tetrakis(pyridin-4-yl)methanediamine (tpmd), and KNCS/KNCSe in methanol and characterized. By utilizing two pyridine groups of a tpmd ligand, 1 and 2 are formed in two-dimensional layered structures through coordination of octahedral iron(ii) ions with the tpmd to NCS−/NCSe− ligands in which they have a supramolecular isomorphous conformation. 1 shows a paramagnetic behavior between 2 and 300 K, while 2 exhibits two-step spin crossover (ca. 145 and 50 K) in the temperature range due to the coordination of NCSe− ligands. At 300 K 2 is fully high-spin state. However, at 100 K 2 becomes ca. 50% high spin and 50% low spin iron(ii) ions, which is verified by magnetic moments. In the structural analysis of 2 at 100 K, two different layers are observed with different bond distances around iron(ii) ions in which the layers are stacked alternately. Two-dimensional Fe-based coordination polymers with square-grid shapes were prepared by self-assembly and exhibited an interesting spin crossover behavior depending on the coordinated counter ions.![]()

Abstract
Magnetic photoswitching is a highly important but relatively rare phenomenon for enabling optical writing/reading of the magnetic state of a molecule. In this work, an unprecedented site-selective double photoswitching is reported from the assembly of two different "photomagnetic chromophores" into a single hexanuclear molecule: namely, a spin-crossover Fe(II) center exhibiting light-induced excited spin state trapping (LIESST) and a photochemically active octacyanometalate(IV) unit. Four different magnetization levels are accessible through the appropriate combination of violet/red light and temperature, results that highlight the potential of photomagnetic molecules as future molecular memory cells.

Abstract
A series of coordination compounds of redox-active 1,10-phenanthroline-5,6-diimine with CoII bis-diketonates and FeII dihydrobis(pyrazolyl)borates has been computationally designed by means of density functional theory (DFT UB3LYP*/6-311++G(d,p)) calculations of their electronic structure, energy characteristics, and magnetic properties. Four types of complexes differing by the nature and position of the terminal metal-centered fragments have been considered. The performed systematic calculations have revealed the systems capable of undergoing thermally initiated spin-state switching rearrangements, including those governed by the synchronized mechanisms of spin crossover and valence tautomerism. The predicted magnetic characteristics allow one to consider the dinuclear cobalt complexes and heterometallic Co/Fe compounds with 1,10-phenanthroline-5,6-diimine as building blocks for molecular and quantum electronics devices. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract
Spin crossover in transition metal complexes can be studied in great detail with computational chemistry. Over the years, the understanding has grown that the relative stability of high-spin (HS) versus low-spin (LS) states is a subtle balance of many factors that all need to be taken into account for a reliable description. Among the different contributions, the zero-point energy (ZPE) and the entropy play key roles. These quantities are usually calculated assuming a harmonic oscillator model for the molecular vibrations. We investigated the impact of including anharmonic corrections on the ZPE and the entropy and indirectly on the critical temperature of spin crossover. As test systems, we used a set of ten Fe(II) complexes and one Fe(III) complex, covering different coordination modes (mono-, bi-, and tri-dentate ligands), decreasing coordination number upon spin crossover, coordination by second- and third-row atoms, and changes in the oxidation state. The results show that the anharmonicity has a measurable effect, but it is in general rather small, and tendencies are not easily recognized. As a conclusion, we put forward that for high precision results, one should be aware of the anharmonic effects, but as long as computational chemistry is still struggling with other larger factors like the influence of the environment and the accurate determination of the electronic energy difference between HS and LS, the anharmonicity of the vibrational modes is a minor concern.

Abstract
The Fe-based spin-crossover (SCO) complexes, especially the ligand-driven light-induced spin-change (LD-LISC) systems with high spin-transition temperature, are considered as the most promising building blocks for designing molecular spintronic devices due to their bistability between the high-spin (HS) and low-spin (LS) states. Here, we explore the transport properties of Fe(stpy)4(NCS)2 LD-LISC SCO complexes with the trans and cis configurations sandwiched between Au electrodes by performing extensive density functional theory calculations combined with the non-equilibrium Green's function method. As for the trans configuration, the current through the molecular junction with the HS state is significantly larger than that of the LS state, which indicates that this Fe-based LD-LISC SCO complex with the trans configuration could act as a molecular switch when the spin transition is triggered by external stimuli. Remarkably, we observe the nearly perfect spin-filtering effect and obvious negative differential resistance feature in the Fe(stpy)4(NCX)2 junctions with the trans and cis configurations, which is attributed by the dramatically different electronic structures of two spin channels and the bias-dependent transmission spectra, respectively. These obtained theoretical findings suggest that the examined Fe-based LD-LISC SCO complexes hold great potential in molecular spintronics. The transport properties of LD-LISC Fe-based SCO complexes with the trans and cis configuration exhibit robust spin-filtering and NDR features, which highlight them for promising applications in molecular devices.![]()

Abstract
For the first time, the spin-crossover (SCO) phenomenon has been observed in an FeII -S6 system in a tris(chelate)-type iron(II) complex with a zwitterionic sulfur donor bidentate, bis(N,N-diethylamino)carbeniumdithiocarboxylate (EtL), [FeII (EtL)3 ](PF6 )2 (1), as synthesized by the reaction of a precursor complex [FeII (CH3 CN)6 ](PF6 )2 with EtL. In the solid state, the high-spin (HS) d6 state at ambient temperature and the low-spin (LS) d6 state at temperatures lower than approximately 240 K were evidenced by magnetic measurements with SQUID and Mössbauer spectra in the temperature range 4-290 K. X-ray analyses of the crystals at various temperatures disclosed that the distorted trigonal prismatic coordination environments essentially do not change; however, contraction of Fe-S distances by approximately 10 % (0.22 Å), ordering of alkyl groups in EtL and PF6 - counteranions, and formation of significant intermolecular S⋅⋅⋅S interactions between adjacent molecules (average distances of 3.59 Å) take place during the transition from the HS to the LS state. A large decrease in the volume of the formula unit (78.1 Å3 ) might be responsible for the large activation barrier, thereby resulting in a slow phase transition upon cooling.

Abstract
Two carboxyl-substituted iron(II) grids, one protonated, [Fe4(HL)4](BF4)4·4MeCN·AcOEt (1), and the other deprotonated, [Fe4(L)4]·DMSO·EtOH (2), where H2L = 4-{4,5-bis[6-(3,5-dimethylpyrazol-1-yl)pyrid-2-yl]-1 H-imidazol-2-yl}benzoic acid, were synthesized. Single-crystal X-ray structure analyses reveal that both complexes have a tetranuclear [2 × 2] grid structure. 1 formed one-dimensional chains through intermolecular hydrogen bonds between the carboxylic acid units of neighboring grids, while 2 formed two-dimensional layers stabilized by π-π-stacking interactions. 1 showed spin transition between the 3HS-1LS and 1.5HS-2.5LS states around 200 K, while 2 showed spin-crossover between the 4LS and 2LS-2HS states above 300 K. A modified indium-tin oxide (ITO) electrode was fabricated by soaking the ITO in a solution of 1. The resultant electrode showed reversible redox waves attributed to the original redox processes of iron(II)/iron(III).
