Identification of the vibrational modes in the far-infrared spectra of ruthenium carbonyl clusters and the effect of gold substitution

Revisiting ultrasmall phosphine-stabilized rhodium-doped gold clusters AunRh (n = 5, 6, 7, 8): geometric, electronic, and vibrational properties

Incorporation of other transition metals in Au nanoclusters has been thriving recently due to its effect on their electronic and photophysical properties. Here, the ultrasmall phosphine-stabilized Rh-doped gold clusters AunRh (n = 5, 6, 7, 8), with metal core structures represented as fragments of a rhodium-centered icosahedron, are considered. The geometric and electronic properties of these nanoclusters are revisited and analyzed using density functional theory (DFT). Moreover, infrared spectra are simulated to identify the effects of Rh doping on the clusters through vibrational properties. Peaks are assigned to breathing-like normal modes for all AuRh clusters except for Au8Rh, likely due to the presence of bound Cl ligands. Unlike their pure gold core counterparts, the % motions of both Au and Rh atoms are lower in the mixed metal clusters, suggesting more restrained metal cores by rhodium, which could result in other novel physical and chemical properties not hitherto discovered.

Probing the binding and activation of small molecules by gas-phase transition metal clusters via IR spectroscopy

Isolated transition metal clusters have been established as useful models for extended metal surfaces or deposited metal particles, to improve the understanding of their surface chemistry and of catalytic reactions. For this objective, an important milestone has been the development of experimental methods for the size-specific structural characterization of clusters and cluster complexes in the gas phase. This review focusses on the characterization of molecular ligands, their binding and activation by small transition metal clusters, using cluster-size specific infrared action spectroscopy. A comprehensive overview and a critical discussion of the experimental data available to date is provided, reaching from the initial results obtained using line-tuneable CO₂ lasers to present-day studies applying infrared free electron lasers as well as other intense and broadly tuneable IR laser sources.

A Review of State of the Art in Phosphine Ligated Gold Clusters and Application in Catalysis

Atomically precise gold clusters are highly desirable due to their well-defined structure which allows the study of structure-property relationships. In addition, they have potential in technological applications such as nanoscale catalysis. The structural, chemical, electronic, and optical properties of ligated gold clusters are strongly defined by the metal-ligand interaction and type of ligands. This critical feature renders gold-phosphine clusters unique and distinct from other ligand-protected gold clusters. The use of multidentate phosphines enables preparation of varying core sizes and exotic structures beyond regular polyhedrons. Weak gold-phosphorous (Au-P) bonding is advantageous for ligand exchange and removal for specific applications, such as catalysis, without agglomeration. The aim of this review is to provide a unified view of gold-phosphine clusters and to present an in-depth discussion on recent advances and key developments for these clusters. This review features the unique chemistry, structural, electronic, and optical properties of gold-phosphine clusters. Advanced characterization techniques, including synchrotron-based spectroscopy, have unraveled substantial effects of Au-P interaction on the composition-, structure-, and size-dependent properties. State-of-the-art theoretical calculations that reveal insights into experimental findings are also discussed. Finally, a discussion of the application of gold-phosphine clusters in catalysis is presented.

Au101-rGO nanocomposite: immobilization of phosphine-protected gold nanoclusters on reduced graphene oxide without aggregation

Graphene supported transition metal clusters are of great interest for potential applications, such as catalysis, due to their unique properties. In this work, a simple approach to deposit Au₁₀₁(PPh₃)₂₁Cl₅ (Au₁₀₁NC) on reduced graphene oxide (rGO) via an ex situ method is presented. Reduction of graphene oxide at native pH (pH ≈ 2) to rGO was performed under aqueous hydrothermal conditions. Decoration of rGO sheets with controlled content of 5 wt% Au was accomplished using only pre-synthesised Au₁₀₁NC and rGO as precursors and methanol as solvent. High resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy indicated that the cluster size did not change upon deposition with an average diameter of 1.4 ± 0.4 nm. It was determined that the rGO reduction method was crucial to avoid agglomeration, with rGO reduced at pH ≈ 11 resulting in agglomeration. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was used to confirm the deposition of Au₁₀₁NCs and show the presence of triphenyl phosphine ligands, which together with attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, advocates that the deposition of Au₁₀₁NCs onto the surface of rGO was facilitated via non-covalent interactions with the phenyl groups of the ligands. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry and thermogravimetric analysis were used to determine the gold loading and both agree with a gold loading of ca. 4.8-5 wt%. The presented simple and mild strategy demonstrates that good compatibility between size-specific phosphine protected gold clusters and rGO can prevent aggregation of the metal clusters. This work contributes towards producing an agglomeration-free synthesis of size-specific ligated gold clusters on rGO that could have wide range of applications.

Enhancement of biocompatibility and photoacoustic contrast activity of metal clusters

Organometallic carbonyl clusters (OMCC) of group VIII elements are water soluble, bio-compatible and stable high-contrast photoacoustic agents for live cell imaging. But, they have limited application due to weak absorption within 700-1000nm wavelength which is known as the biological window of absorption. In this article, we report that hexa-nuclear iron (Fe₆) carbonyl cluster derivatized with sodium thio-propanoate has very good absorption within 700-1600nm wave length. This modeled compound is water soluble and bio-compatible. The bio-compatibility of this compound is tested through cytotoxicity, LogP and metabolic probability at CYP450-2D6 enzyme.

The effect of counter ions on the far-infrared spectra of tris(triphenylphosphinegold)oxonium dimer salts

The far-infrared spectra of two tris(triphenylphosphinegold)oxonium dimer salts in the 50–800 cm⁻¹ region were recorded using synchrotron-based IR radiation, and comprehensively assigned utilising density functional theory calculations.
