Abstract
Quinizarin, an anthracyclin-like compound, was used to prepare a binuclear complex, [(Fe(cyclam))2Qz]Cl(PF6)3, which showed damage to DNA with glutathione. This mimic of anthracyclin drugs might explain undesired side effects of these compounds.

Abstract
We have synthesized a mononuclear ruthenium(II) azido complex (1) and a dinuclear ruthenium(II) μ-azido complex (2) having N,N-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)-N-bis(2-pyridyl)methylamine (N4Py) as a pentadentate ancillary ligand. In the crystal structure of 2, intramolecular π-π stacking was found between the pyridine rings of the two different N4Py ligands, contributing to stabilize the dinuclear μ-azido structure. π donation from the HOMO π* orbital of the μ-azido ligand to the Ru-N(pyr) bond increases the bond order between the terminal and central N atoms in the μ-azido ligand to strengthen the N-N bonds of the μ-azido ligand. The μ-azido complex 2 was revealed to exhibit a stepwise oxidation behavior in CH3CN to afford a Ru(II)-μ-azido-Ru(III) mixed-valence (MV) state upon one-electron oxidation. The MV state of one-electron-oxidized 2 was categorized in the Robin-Day class II with the electronic coupling constant (H(ab)) of 570 cm(-1).

Abstract
The compounds [Ru(NH(3))(5)(dtdp)](TFMS)(3), [Os(NH(3))(5)(dtdp)](TFMS)(3), [(NH(3))(5)Os(dtdp)Os(NH(3))(5)](TFMS)(6), [(NH(3))(5)Os(dtdp)Ru(NH(3))(5)](TFMS)(3)(PF(6))(2), and [(NH(3))(5)Os(dtdp)Fe(CN)(5)] (dtdp = 4,4'-dithiodipyridine, TFMS = trifluoromethanesulfonate) have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, cyclic voltammetry, electronic, vibrational, EPR, and (1)H NMR spectroscopies. Changes in the electronic and voltammetric spectra of the ion complex [Os(NH(3))(5)(dtdp)](3+) as a function of the solution pH enable us to calculate the pK(a) for the [Os(NH(3))(5)(dtdpH)](4+) and [Os(NH(3))(5)(dtdpH)](3+) acids as 3.5 and 5.5, respectively. The comparison of the above pK(a) data with that for the free ligand (pK(1) = 4.8) provides evidence for the -S-S- bridge efficiency as an electron conductor between the two pyridine rings. The symmetric complex, [(NH(3))(5)Os(dtdp)Os(NH(3))(5)](6+), is found to exist in two geometric forms, and the most abundant form (most probably trans) has a strong conductivity through the -S-S- bridge, as is shown by EPR, which finds it to have an S = 1 spin state with a spin-spin interaction parameter of 150-200 G both in the solid sate and in frozen solution. Further the NMR of the same complex shows a large displacement of unpaired spin into the pi orbitals of the dttp ligand relative to that found in [Os(NH(3))(5)(dtdp)](3+). The comproportionation constant, K(c) = 2.0 x 10(5), for the equilibrium equation [Os(II)Os(II)] + [Os(III)Os(III)] right harpoon over left harpoon 2[Os(II)Os(III)] and the near-infrared band energy for the mixed-valence species (MMCT), [(NH(3))(5)Os(dtdp)Os(NH(3))(5)](5+) (lambda(MMCT) = 1665 nm, epsilon = 3.5 x 10(3) M(-)(1) cm(-)(1), deltanu(1/2) = 3.7 x 10(3) cm(-)(1), alpha = 0.13, and H(AB) = 7.8 x 10(2) cm(-)(1)), are quite indicative of strong electron delocalization between the two osmium centers. The electrochemical and spectroscopic data for the unsymmetrical binuclear complexes [(NH(3))(5)Os(III)(dtdp)Ru(II)(NH(3))(5)](5+) (lambda(MMCT) = 965 nm, epsilon = 2.2 x 10(2) M(-)(1) cm(-)(1), deltanu(1/2) = 3.0 x 10(3) cm(-)(1), and H(AB) = 2.2 x 10(2) cm(-)(1)) and [(NH(3))(5)Os(III)(dtdp)Fe(II)(CN)(5)] (lambda(MMCT) = 790 nm, epsilon = 7.5 x 10 M(-)(1) cm(-)(1), deltanu(1/2) = 5.4 x 10(3) cm(-)(1), and H(AB) = 2.0 x 10(2) cm(-)(1)) also suggest a considerable electron delocalization through the S-S bridge. As indicated by a comparison of K(c) and energy of the MMCT process in the iron, ruthenium, and osmium complexes, the electron delocalization between the two metal centers increases in the following order: Fe < Ru < Os.

Abstract
The conceptually simple mixed-valent diiron compound (NEt(4))(5)[(NC)(5)Fe(mu-tz)Fe(CN)(5)] with the 1,2,4,5-tetrazine (tz) bridging ligand was obtained as a thermally and air-stable material that displays large and highly variable electrochemical comproportionation constants between about 10(8) (in water) and 10(19.0) (in acetonitrile). Strong metal-metal interaction is also evident from spectroscopic results obtained for the solid and for the dissolved species. The rather intense intervalence charge-transfer band occurs around 2400 nm; infrared and Mössbauer spectra reveal the high spectroscopic symmetry of the system according to an (Fe(2.5))(2) formulation. DFT calculations on the [(NC)(5)Fe(mu-tz)Fe(CN)(5)](6-) ion confirm the presence of very low-lying pi(tz) and high-lying d(Fe) orbitals.

Abstract
Starting from the Creutz-Taube ion as the prototype of a molecule-bridged mixed-valent complex, a number of related systems are presented in which the metal, the co-ligands, the molecular bridge, the d electron configuration, the medium, the charge, the coordination mode, or the nuclearity have been modified. The new mixed-valent configurations, as obtained through various chemical approaches, display different stabilities and spectroscopic characteristics in relation to the Creutz-Taube ion; the analysis of these results serves to provide a better understanding of fundamental aspects of molecule-mediated metal-metal interaction.

Abstract
The kinetics and mechanism of the self-assemblies of alpha- and beta-cyclodextrin (CD) [2]rotaxanes, [(NC)5Fe-[pyRpy.CD]Fe(CN)5]6-, containing pentacyanoferrate(II)-stoppered 4,4'-bis(pyridyl) threads pyRpy (R = -CH = CH-, -N=N-, -CH=N-N=CH-, and -C(CH3)=N-N=C(CH3)-) have been investigated in aqueous solution by using visible and 1H NMR spectroscopy. The rotaxanes may be formed rapidly by the addition of the [Fe(CN)5OH2]3- ion to the CD-included pyRpy thread or slowly by the addition of an excess of CD to the dimeric [(NC)5Fe(pyRpy)Fe(CN)5]6- complex. In the latter method, the mechanism involves a rate-determining dissociation of a [Fe(CN)5]3- center to form the monomeric complex, which subsequently includes the coordinated pyRpy in the CD cavity to yield the semirotaxane, which is rapidly recomplexed by the [Fe(CN)5OH2]3- ion, generating the [2]rotaxane. Rate and activation parameters and CD inclusion stability constants have been determined for the ligand substitution reactions involving the formations and dissociations of the semirotaxanes and rotaxanes. The extents of the decreases in the formation (kf) and dissociation (kd) rate constants upon CD inclusions of the free and coordinated ligands, respectively, are related to the natures of the CD hosts and the R linkage on the pyRpy guests. The semirotaxanes and rotaxanes exhibit significant bathochromic shifts in their visible MLCT transitions compared with the corresponding monomeric and dimeric iron complexes. A correlation between the extent of the decrease in kd and the change in the MLCT energy upon alpha-CD inclusions of [Fe(CN)5L]3-, where L is an aromatic N-heterocyclic 4-Rpy or pyRpy ligand, has been observed.
