Abstract
An enhanced understanding of the metal ion binding and active site structural features of phosphoesterases such as the glycerophosphodiesterase from Enterobacter aerogenes (GpdQ), and the organophosphate degrading agent from Agrobacterium radiobacter (OpdA) have important consequences for potential applications. Coupled with investigations of the metalloenzymes, programs of study to synthesise and characterise model complexes based on these metalloenzymes can add to our understanding of structure and function of the enzymes themselves. This review summarises some of our work and illustrates the significance and contributions of model studies to knowledge in the area.

Abstract
To obtain structural and spectroscopic models for the diiron(II,III) centers in the active sites of diiron enzymes, the (μ-alkoxo)(μ-carboxylato)diiron(II,III) complexes [Fe(II)Fe(III)(N-Et-HPTB)(O(2)CPh)(NCCH(3))(2)](ClO(4))(3) (1) and [Fe(II)Fe(III)(N-Et-HPTB)(O(2)CPh)(Cl)(HOCH(3))](ClO(4))(2) (2) (N-Et-HPTB = N,N,N',N'-tetrakis(2-(1-ethyl-benzimidazolylmethyl))-2-hydroxy-1,3-diaminopropane) have been prepared and characterized by X-ray crystallography, UV-visible absorption, EPR, and Mössbauer spectroscopies. Fe1-Fe2 separations are 3.60 and 3.63 Å, and Fe1-O1-Fe2 bond angles are 128.0° and 129.4° for 1 and 2, respectively. Mössbauer and EPR studies of 1 show that the Fe(III) (S(A) = 5/2) and Fe(II) (S(B) = 2) sites are antiferromagnetically coupled to yield a ground state with S = 1/2 (g= 1.75, 1.88, 1.96); Mössbauer analysis of solid 1 yields J = 22.5 ± 2 cm(-1) for the exchange coupling constant (H = JS(A)·S(B) convention). In addition to the S = 1/2 ground-state spectrum of 1, the EPR signal for the S = 3/2 excited state of the spin ladder can also be observed, the first time such a signal has been detected for an antiferromagnetically coupled diiron(II,III) complex. The anisotropy of the (57)Fe magnetic hyperfine interactions at the Fe(III) site is larger than normally observed in mononuclear complexes and arises from admixing S > 1/2 excited states into the S = 1/2 ground state by zero-field splittings at the two Fe sites. Analysis of the "D/J" mixing has allowed us to extract the zero-field splitting parameters, local g values, and magnetic hyperfine structural parameters for the individual Fe sites. The methodology developed and followed in this analysis is presented in detail. The spin Hamiltonian parameters of 1 are related to the molecular structure with the help of DFT calculations. Contrary to what was assumed in previous studies, our analysis demonstrates that the deviations of the g values from the free electron value (g = 2) for the antiferromagnetically coupled diiron(II,III) core in complex 1 are predominantly determined by the anisotropy of the effective g values of the ferrous ion and only to a lesser extent by the admixture of excited states into ground-state ZFS terms (D/J mixing). The results for 1 are discussed in the context of the data available for diiron(II,III) clusters in proteins and synthetic diiron(II,III) complexes.

Abstract
Four new tetranuclear iron(III) complexes of formula [{Fe(L)(2)}(3)Fe], 1-4, have been prepared by reacting [Fe(ClO(4))(3)].6H(2)O with H(2)L in methanol. Here, L(2-) is the deprotonated form of N-(2-hyrdoxybenzyl)-l-valinol (H(2)L(1)), N-(2-hyrdoxybenzyl)-l-leucinol (H(2)L(2)), N-(5-chloro-2-hyrdoxybenzyl)-l-leucinol (H(2)L(3)), and N-(2-hyrdoxybenzyl)-l-phenylalaninol (H(2)L(4)). The complexes are prepared in an enantiomeric pure form. The complexes have been characterized with the help of IR, UV-vis, circular dichroism (CD), (1)H, and elemental analyses. The complex [{Fe(L(2))(2)}(3)Fe].CH(3)OH.2H(2)O, 2.CH(3)OH.2H(2)O, crystallizes in enantiomeric pure form containing a propeller-like Fe(4)O(6) core. (1)H and CD spectral studies of the four species are consistent with the structural similarities of the complexes in solution. Variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility of one case shows an intramolecular antiferromagnetic coupling between the Fe(III) ions. Magnetic measurements are in accord with the S = 5 ground state and suggest single molecular magnet behavior. The magnetic exchange coupling constant between the iron centers within the molecule is interpreted using broken-symmetry density functional theory calculation.

Abstract
Hydrothermal reactions of bis(benzimidazol-2-ylmethyl)imino(methylenephosphonic acid) {[(C(7)H(5)N(2))CH(2)]2NCH(2)PO(3)H(2), bbimpH2} with metal salts result in four new compounds, namely, Mn2{[(C(7)H(5)N(2))CH2]2NCH(2)PO(3)}2(H2O)2.2H2O (1), Cd2{[(C(7)H(5)N(2))CH2]2NCH(2)PO(3)}2.2H2O (2), Fe2{[(C(7)H(5)N(2))CH2]2NCH(2)PO(3)}2.H2O (3), and CuI(2){[(C(7)H(5)N(2))CH2]2NCH(2)P(OH)O2}2 (4). Compounds 1 and 2 have dinuclear structures in which two {MN(3)O(3)} octahedra are linked through edge sharing. In compound 3, a chain structure is observed where the {FeN(3)O(2)} trigonal bipyramids are linked by {CPO(3)} tetrahedra through corner-sharing. The structure of compound 4 is unique. The monovalent Cu(I) ions are connected by the imidazole nitrogen atoms from the bbimp(2-) ligands forming a 16-member metallomacrocycle. These metallomacrocycles are further connected by the phosphonate oxygen atoms, leading to a two-dimensional net containing 16- and 32-member rings. Magnetic studies of 1 and 3 reveal that weak ferromagnetic interactions are mediated between magnetic centers in compound 1, while antiferromagnetic interactions were observed in compound 3.

Abstract
Reaction of the unsymmetrical phenol ligand 2-((bis(2-pyridylmethyl)amino)methyl)-6-(((2-pyridylmethyl)benzylamino)methyl)-4-methylphenol (HL-Bn) or its 2,6-dichlorobenzyl analogue (HL-BnCl(2)) with Fe(H(2)O)(6)(ClO(4))(2) in the presence of disodium m-phenylenedipropionate (Na(2)(mpdp)) followed by exposure to atmosphere affords the diiron(II,III) complexes [Fe(2)(L-Bn)(mpdp)(H(2)O)](ClO(4))(2) and [Fe(2)(L-BnCl(2))(mpdp)(CH(3)OH)](ClO(4))(2), respectively. The latter complex has been characterized by X-ray crystallography. It crystallizes in the monoclinic system, space group P2(1)/n, with a = 13.3095(14) A, b = 20.1073(19) A, c = 19.4997(19) A, alpha = 90 degrees, beta = 94.471(2) degrees, gamma = 90 degrees, V = 5202.6(9) A(3), and Z = 4. The structure of the compound is very similar to that of [Fe(2)(L-Bn)(mpdp)(H(2)O)](BPh(4))(2) determined earlier, except for the replacement of a water by a methanol on the ferrous site. Magnetic measurements of [Fe(2)(L-Bn)(mpdp)(H(2)O)](BPh(4))(2) reveal that the two high-spin Fe ions are moderately antiferromagnetically coupled (J = -3.2(2) cm(-)(1)). Upon dissolution in acetonitrile the terminal ligand on the ferrous site is replaced by a solvent molecule. The acetonitrile-water exchange has been investigated by various spectroscopic techniques (UV-visible, NMR, Mössbauer) and electrochemistry. The substitution of acetonitrile by water is clearly evidenced by Mössbauer spectroscopy by a reduction of the quadrupole splitting value from 3.14 to 2.41 mm/s. In addition, it causes a 210 mV downshift of the oxidation potential of the ferrous site and a similar reduction of the stability domain of the mixed-valence state. Exhaustive electrolysis of a solution of [Fe(2)(L-Bn)(mpdp)(H(2)O)](2+) shows that the aqua diferric species is not stable and undergoes a chemical reaction which can be partly reversed by reduction to the mixed-valent state. This and other electrochemical observations suggest that upon oxidation of the diiron center to the diferric state the aqua ligand is deprotonated to a hydroxo. This hypothesis is supported by Mössbauer spectroscopy. Indeed, this species possesses a large quadrupole splitting value (DeltaE(Q) >or= 1.0 mm.s(-)(1)) similar to that of analogous complexes with a terminal phenolate ligand. This study illustrates the drastic effects of aqua ligand exchange and deprotonation on the electronic structure and redox potentials of diiron centers.
