Abstract
The electronic circular dichroism (ECD) spectra of aqueous d-glucose and d-galactose were modeled using a theoretical-computational approach combining molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and perturbed matrix method (PMM) calculations, hereafter termed MD-PMM. The experimental spectra were reproduced with a satisfactory accuracy, confirming the good performances of MD-PMM in modeling different spectral features in complex atomic-molecular systems, as already reported in previous studies. The underlying strategy of the method was to perform a preliminary long timescale MD simulation of the chromophore followed by the extraction of the relevant conformations through essential dynamics analysis. On this (limited) number of relevant conformations, the ECD spectrum was calculated via the PMM approach. This study showed that MD-PMM was able to reproduce the essential features of the ECD spectrum (i.e., the position, the intensity, and the shape of the bands) of d-glucose and d-galactose while avoiding the rather computationally expensive aspects, which were demonstrated to be important for the final outcome, such as (i) the use of a large number of chromophore conformations; (ii) the inclusion of quantum vibronic coupling; and (iii) the inclusion of explicit solvent molecules interacting with the chromophore atoms within the chromophore itself (e.g., via hydrogen bonds).

Abstract
In the terrestrial dipolar magnetic field, magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) of UV sunlight by paramagnetic O2 in an Archean atmosphere (mostly CO2 and N2) results in circular polarization anisotropy (~ 10-10). This is used to calculate enantiomeric excess (EE~10-13) of glyceraldehyde (3-carbon sugar) with a model that includes racemic production and asymmetric photolysis of its enantiomers. The sign and magnitude of enantiomeric excess (EE) vary with the Earth's latitude. Unlike random noise fluctuation in spontaneous mirror symmetry breaking (SMSB) models, the sign of EE is deterministic and constant over large areas of prebiotic Earth. The magnitude is several orders greater than the mean amplitude of stochastically fluctuating EE. MCD could provide the initial EE for growth of homochirality by asymmetric autocatalysis.

Abstract
The biomolecular homochirality in living organisms has been investigated for decades, but its origin remains poorly understood. It has been shown that circular polarized light (CPL) and other energy sources are capable of inducing small enantiomeric excesses (ees) in some primary biomolecules, such as amino acids or sugars. Since the first findings of amino acids in carbonaceous meteorites, a scenario in which essential chiral biomolecules originate in space and are delivered by celestial bodies has arisen. Numerous studies have thus focused on their detection, identification, and enantiomeric excess calculations in extraterrestrial matrices. In this review we summarize the discoveries in amino acids, sugars, and organophosphorus compounds in meteorites, comets, and laboratory-simulated interstellar ices. Based on available analytical data, we also discuss their interactions with CPL in the ultraviolet (UV) and vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) regions, their abiotic chiral or achiral synthesis, and their enantiomeric distribution. Without doubt, further laboratory investigations and upcoming space missions are required to shed more light on our potential extraterrestrial molecular origins.

Abstract
We studied the optical properties of gas-phase polysaccharides (maltose, maltotetraose, and maltohexaose) ions by action spectroscopy using the coupling between a quadrupole ion trap and a vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) beamline at the SOLEIL synchrotron radiation facility (France) in the 7 to 18 eV range. The spectra provide unique benchmarks for evaluation of theoretical data on electronic transitions of model carbohydrates in the VUV range. The effects of the nature of the charge held by polysaccharide ions on the relaxation processes were also explored. Finally the effect of isomerization of polysaccharides (with melezitose and raffinose) on their photofragmentation with VUV photons is presented.

Abstract
The vacuum-ultraviolet (VUV) electronic circular dichroism (ECD) spectrum of methyl α-D-glucopyranoside (methyl α-D-Glc) was measured down to 163 nm in aqueous solution using a synchrotron-radiation VUV-ECD spectrophotometer. The spectrum exhibited two characteristic ECD peaks around 170 nm, which depend on the trans (T) and gauche (G) configurations of the hydroxymethyl group at C-5. To elucidate the influences of the T and G configurations on the spectrum, the ECD spectra of three rotamers (α-GT, α-GG, and α-TG) of methyl α-D-Glc were calculated using time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) combined with molecular dynamics simulation. A linear combination of the ECD spectra of these three rotamers, which differ markedly from each other, produced a methyl α-D-Glc spectrum similar to that observed experimentally. The spectrum was assignable to the n-σ* transitions of the ring oxygen and methoxy oxygen with minor contributions from the hydroxyl oxygen. The differences in α-GT, α-GG, and α-TG spectra were attributed to fluctuations of the configurations of the hydroxymethyl group at C-5 and the hydroxyl group at C-4, which strongly affected the orientations of intramolecular hydrogen bonds around the ring oxygen. These findings demonstrate that combining VUV-ECD and TDDFT is useful for structural characterization of saccharides in aqueous solution.

Abstract
Synchrotron radiation circular dichroism (SRCD) spectra of ribose and deoxyribose sugars, adenosine, AMP and dAMP nucleotides and cyclic derivatives were measured in the vacuum ultraviolet region (down to 168 nm for sugars and 175 nm for adenine derivatives) and at different pH values (3, 6-7, 9-10) and temperatures (between 5 and 45 degrees C). The information content in the VUV region is important since the CD bands strongly depend on the chemical structure of the sugar, the presence and orientation of a phosphate group and the protonation state of adenine. On the other hand, single or double deprotonation of the phosphoric acid group has no influence on the spectra. We assign the vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) CD bands of the nucleoside and nucleotides to be due mainly to n-->pi* transitions in the adenine nucleobase based on a comparison with the absorption spectra. The CD bands of the sugars are due to n(O -->sigma*) transitions and are much smaller than the CD signal from the nucleotides in the VUV region. Bands are assigned to both pyranose and open-chain forms.

Abstract
Vacuum-ultraviolet circular dichroism (VUVCD) spectra of five monosaccharides (D-glucose, D-mannose, D-galactose, D-xylose, and D-lyxose) and five disaccharides (maltose, isomaltose, cellobiose, gentiobiose, and lactose) were measured to 160 nm using a synchrotron-radiation VUVCD spectrophotometer in aqueous solution under high vacuum at 25 degrees C. Most of the saccharides show a positive peak with some shoulders at around 170 nm, except for D-galactose and lactose, which show two distinct negative peaks at around 165 and 177 nm. These spectra are influenced by such structural factors as alpha and beta anomers at C-1, axial and equatorial hydroxyl groups at C-2 and C-4, trans (T) and gauche (G) conformations of the hydroxymethyl group at C-5, and the type of glycosidic linkage. Deconvolution of the VUVCD spectra of D-glucose, D-mannose, and D-galactose into six independent Gaussian components for alpha-GG, alpha-GT, alpha-TG, beta-GG, beta-GT, and beta-TG conformations suggests that the alpha anomer has red-shifted spectra relative to the beta anomer, and that GG and GT conformations have positive and negative circular dichroism signs, respectively, while the sign for TG conformation is anomer dependent. These speculations from the deconvolution analyses are also supported by the VUVCD spectra of disaccharides. These results give new insight into the equilibrium conformations of saccharides, demonstrating the usefulness of synchrotron-radiation VUVCD spectroscopy.

Abstract
The far and vacuum u.v. circular dichroism (CD) of peptidophosphogalactomannan from P. charlesii is reported to 182.5 nm in aqueous and aqueous/organic solvents, and to 150nm in films. CD of films of the peptide-free derivative is reported to 150 nm. On the basis of these data we conclude that the peptide chain is unordered, and may best be described as a hydrated coil showing some stiffness. The small observed saccharide CD may result from cancellation of contributions from the various saccharide structures present or from a lack of repeating secondary structure.

Abstract
A procedure is described in detail by which the algal polysaccharide, iota-carrageenan, can be modified and fragmented to products of more regular structure and shorter chain length. Since most chains of this product can form uninterrupted helices they undergo the disorder-order transition without the gelation that is a feature of the behaviour of the natural polymer. The disorder-order transition becomes much sharper and occurs at higher temperatures with increasing chain length. The sign and magnitude of the accompanying shift in optical rotation can be estimated satisfactorily from the solid-state geometry of the helix using our semi-empirical method for correlating optical rotation with the conformations at glycosidic linkages. In solutions of the helical form, but not the coil form, cationic dyes such as methylene blue or acridine orange show induced optical activity and a changed visible spectrum which we attribute to binding and stacking on the helix. This also causes a shift in the temperature of the helix-coil transition. We discuss the possibility that the tendency of dyes to stack could drive polysaccharides into conformations that they would not otherwise adopt, with implications for their use as 'conformational probes'.
