Abstract
A chiral phosphoric acid promoted enantioselective NMR recognition and determination of indoloquinazoline alkaloids phaitanthrin A, cephalanthrin-A and their analogues was described, which conveniently reveals their optical purities with high accuracy. Besides, pyrazine type tertiary alcohols, cyclic amino alcohols and diamines can also be well resolved under optimal conditions. Importantly, this methodology was further employed in the direct analysis of reaction mixtures of amino acid metal salt catalyzed asymmetric synthesis of phaitanthrin A, providing access to the optimized reaction conditions in high efficiency.

Chirality sensing of tertiary alcohols by a novel strong hydrogen-bonding donor - selenourea. Chem Sci 2015; 7:932-938. Abstract
In this paper, a novel type of chiral bisselenourea sensor was first synthesized and used as a strong hydrogen-bonding donor for highly efficient chiral recognition of a diverse range of tertiary alcohols.
Chemical sensors are powerful for the fast recognition of chiral compounds. However, the established sensing systems are less effective for chiral tertiary alcohols. The chiral tertiary alcohol group is an important structural unit in natural products and drug molecules, and its enantioselective recognition represents a significant and challenging task. In this paper, a novel type of chiral bisselenourea sensor was first synthesized and used as a strong hydrogen-bonding donor for highly efficient chiral recognition of a diverse range of tertiary alcohols. The obtained sharply split NMR signals are well-distinguishable with a large (up to 0.415 ppm) chemical shift nonequivalence. The NMR signal of the hydroxyl hydrogen atom was first employed for enantiomeric excess determination of tertiary alcohols, giving accurate results with <2% absolute errors. The 2D NOESY spectra and computational studies suggest that the geometrical differentiation of the formed diastereomeric complexes between the sensor and tertiary alcohols enables the chiral discrimination of the hydroxyl hydrogen signals of the tertiary alcohol in the 1H NMR spectrum.

A catalytic, enantioselective formal synthesis of (+)-dichroanone and (+)-taiwaniaquinone H. Org Lett 2014; 16:6362-5. Abstract
A catalytic, enantioselective formal synthesis of (+)-dichroanone and (+)-taiwaniaquinone H is reported. The all-carbon quaternary stereocenter was constructed by asymmetric conjugate addition catalyzed by a palladium(II) (S)-tert-butylpyridinooxazoline complex. The unexpected formation of a [3.2.1] bicyclic intermediate required the identification of a new route. Analysis of the Hammett constants for para-substituted arenes enabled the rational design of a highly enantioselective conjugate addition substrate that led to the completion of the formal synthesis.

Determination of second-order association constants by global analysis of 1H and 13C NMR chemical shifts. Application to the complexation of sodium fusidate and potassium helvolate by beta- and gamma-cyclodextrin. Steroids 2003; 68:43-53. Abstract
The host-guest interaction between the steroid antibiotics sodium fusidate and potassium helvolate as guests and the hosts beta- and gamma-cyclodextrin was studied by 13C and 1H NMR techniques. The analysis of chemical shifts of individual nuclei leads to inconsistent values of the association constants and fails generally in the case of mixtures of 1:1 and 1:2 stoichiometries. The problem of parameter correlation is identified and the global analysis of two or more nuclei is proposed as a very effective method for the detection of complexes of higher stoichiometries and for the precise determination of the involved association constants. A matrix formulation of global analysis and the determination of confidence intervals is described. An analytical solution of the cubic equation, necessary for the description of higher order complexes, is presented in detail and its use together with commercial fitting software is compared with dedicated implementations. gamma-Cyclodextrin forms with both studied steroids, sodium fusidate and potassium helvolate, 1:1 complexes with high values of the association constants, K(1)=(60+/-24)x10(3)lmol(-1), and K(2)=(22+/-9)x10(3)lmol(-1), respectively. To the contrary, beta-cyclodextrin forms 1:1 and 1:2 (guest:host) complexes with both steroids, with moderate K(1) and low K(2) values (K(1)=(0.74+/-0.13)x10(3)lmol(-1), K(2)=(0.210+/-0.075)x10(3)lmol(-1)), and (K(1)=(2.42+/-0.87)x10(3)lmol(-1), K(2)=(0.06+/-0.09)x10(3)lmol(-1)), respectively.

Abstract
This study reports the first direct observation of multiple occupancy of the gramicidin A channel by Tl+ ions. 205Tl NMR has been used to study the equilibrium binding of Tl+ by gramicidin A incorporated in sonicated dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine vesicles. It is shown that only multiple-channel occupancy can account for the 205Tl chemical shifts measured. The data are analyzed to yield the equilibrium association constants of 450-600 and 5-20 M-1 for the binding of the first and the second ions at 34 degrees C, respectively.
