Abstract
Woodward and Hoffmann, in their treatise on orbital symmetry in 1969, stated "Violations. There are none!" Prinzbach reported in 1978 that the electrocyclization of vinylogous sesquifulvalene occurs exclusively through the Woodward-Hoffmann orbital-symmetry-forbidden 14π-electron conrotatory pathway, despite the availability of a variety of orbital-symmetry-allowed processes. Prinzbach later demonstrated that an 18π-electron homologue exhibits the same forbidden behavior. And yet, the analogous vinylogous pentafulvalene and heptafulvalene both follow the orbital symmetry rules, each proceeding through its allowed conrotatory 12π and 16π process, respectively. We report the investigation of these reactions with ωB97X-D DFT. The physical origins of the flagrant Prinzbach violations of the Woodward-Hoffmann orbital symmetry selection rules have now been elucidated by these calculations in conjunction with extensive analyses and comparisons to electrocyclizations that obey the Woodward-Hoffmann rules. This remarkable reversal of the Rules (the 14π-electron-forbidden process is found to be 11 kcal/mol more energetically facile than the allowed process) occurs due to the high degree of polarization of this hydrocarbon, such that conrotatory electrocyclization of vinylogous sesquifulvalene behaves like a cyclopentadienide combining with a tropylium. These results are compared to other forbidden pericyclic processes driven by steric constraints and strain release or by diradical character of the reactants that facilitates the formation of diradical transition states for symmetry-forbidden reactions. We predict how strong donor-acceptor substitution can modify nodal properties to level the difference between allowed and forbidden electrocyclic reaction barriers, and we provide computational predictions of two such cases.

Abstract
We present a strategy to achieve highly cooperative photoswitching, where the initial switching event greatly facilitates subsequent switching of the neighboring unit. By linking donor/acceptor substituted dihydropyrenes via suitable π-conjugated bridges, the quantum yield of the second photochemical ring-opening process could be enhanced by more than two orders of magnitude as compared to the first ring-opening. As a result, the intermediate mixed switching state is not detected during photoisomerization although it is formed during the thermal back reaction. Comparing the switching behavior of various dimers, both experimentally and computationally, helped to unravel the crucial role of the bridging moiety connecting both photochromic units. The presented dihydropyrene dimer serves as model system for longer cooperative switching chains, which, in principle, should enable efficient and directional transfer of information along a molecularly defined path. Moreover, our concept allows to enhance the photosensitivity in oligomeric and polymeric systems and materials thereof.

Abstract
Dihydropyrene (DHP)/cyclophanediene (CPD) is a fascinating photoswitchable organic system displaying negative photochromism. Upon irradiation in the visible region, the colored DHP can be converted to its open-ring CPD colorless isomer, which can be converted back to DHP by UV light. DHP and CPD thus possess very different absorption spectra whose absorption bands have never been assigned in detail so far. In this work, we characterize the vertical electronic transitions of the first six and seven excited states of DHP and CPD, respectively, aiming for a realistic comparison with experiment. We used state-of-the-art electronic structure methods [e.g., complete active space second-order perturbation theory (CASPT2), n-electron valence-state perturbation theory (NEVPT2), extended multiconfigurational quasi-degenerate perturbation theory (XMCQDPT2), and third-order algebraic diagrammatic construction ADC(3)] capable of describing differential electron correlation. Vertical transition energies were also computed with time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) and compared to these accurate methods. After the reliability of TD-DFT was validated for the main optical transitions, this efficient method was used to simulate the absorption spectra of DHP and CPD in the framework of the Franck-Condon Herzberg-Teller approximation and also using the nuclear ensemble approach. Overall, for both methods, the simulated absorption spectra reproduce nicely the main spectral features of the DHP and CPD isomers, that is, the main four absorption bands of increasing intensity of DHP and the absorption rise below 300 nm for CPD.

Abstract
Multicenter covalent pi-bonding between pi-conjugated radicals has been recently recognized as a novel and important bonding interaction. The Cope rearrangement of cyclo-biphenalenyl 9 is studied by exploring its potential energy surface with density functional theory (DFT), and it is found that pi-bonding plays a critical role in the rearrangement process. Affected by this, the rearrangement of 9 takes place by a stepwise mechanism through an unusual pi-intermediate 10, of C2h symmetry, which can be characterized as a 2 x 13pi + 2 x 2pi system. The pi-intermediate has a long inter-phenalenyl distance of R approximately 2.8 angstroms, which is shorter than the sum of the van der Waals radii displaying multicenter covalent pi-bonding between the two phenalenyl units. The energy of the pi-intermediate 10 is higher than that of the sigma-bonded reactant 9 by approximately 2 kcal/mol according to the employed spin-restricted DFT. NMR chemical shift calculations support the sigma-bonded 9 as the global minimum. The calculated activation barrier of approximately 6 kcal/mol for the Cope rearrangement is consistent with the stepwise mechanism. A covalent pi-bonding effect in the pi-intermediate 10 is demonstrated indirectly by the shortening of inter-naphthalene distance of the dianion and dication of the cyclophane 14 compared to that of its neutral counterpart. The unusual pi-bonded structure with a long inter-phenalenyl distance becomes the most stable structure for the ethano-bridged derivative 13, which should have observable paramagnetism according to the calculated paramagnetic susceptibility.

Abstract
The annulenium ions of protonation, the two-electron oxidation dications, and the two-electron reduction dianions derived from dihydro- and dimethyldihydro derivatives (cis and trans) of dicyclopenta[ef,kl]heptalene (azupyrene) (1) and dicyclohepta[ed,gh]pentalene (2), which are the nonalternant isomers of pyrene, were studied by density functional theory (DFT) at the B3LYP/6-31G(d), 6-31+G(d,p), or 6-31++G(d,p) levels. Charge delocalization modes in the energetically most favored annulenium ions, as well as in the singlet and triplet dications and dianions, were assessed based on gauge-including atomic orbital (GIAO) Deltadelta](13)C values and via changes in natural population analysis (NPA) charges. Relative aromaticity/antiaromaticity in the annulenes were gauged via nucleus-independent chemical shift (NICS) and DeltaNICS. Annulenium ions of monoprotonation, the dications, and dianions derived from bismethano- and propanediylidene [14]annulenes were also studied by DFT for comparison with the cis-dihydro isomers derived from . Computed GIAO NMR data and the optimized geometries were compared with the experimental data when available, and the optimized geometries were compared with the X-ray data if known. A basis-set dependency study of the computed GIAO chemical shifts was also undertaken. The present DFT work represents the first detailed comparative theoretical study of charged annulenes derived from the dihydro derivatives of and .

Abstract
The photochemistry of several photochromic arene [e]-annelated dimethyldihydropyrenes (DHPs) was studied. These compounds have much larger photochemical ring opening quantum yields than the simple DHPs, making them potentially more useful as building blocks for photoswitchable materials.
